2005 ROCK-TOBER CHEMO GIRLS

Okay..I'm actually in agreement with Mary-Anne. I looked up one of those sites..my girlfriend had given that to me..Sheraton. It's easy to get around to places in Chicago from there and I looked up 4 in a room. Not sure how that works but it would be a lot cheaper. I'm coming alone. When I'm in Chicago I always stay with my girlfriend. She lives 5 minutes walking from the train and "L" which takes you downtown. But, I want a cheetah pj slumber party with lemon drop martinis!!!!
I have been to all the museums. I have a tendency to want to take people on tours (that's what I do when people come to Israel!!) so I got carried away. My main purpose of MY Chicago visit this time is to meet all of you and if we are wandering around the art institute and so on..we can't really meet. We should have a central location, order cholesterol filled pizza and GAB!
The date we chose, I think, was the weekend of Aug. 24th. I can be there on whatever day you all will be there. I want to spend at least ONE night all together in our cheetahs so how can we do that?
I think we all need to be staying in the hotel at least one night together.
What do you all think? -
And I was thinking that if we are all going to go out for meals in restaurants together, we need to reserve in advance! There are a lot of us!!!! LOL
When our family does this for a family Bar/Bat Mitzvah or wedding, we reserve a block of rooms in a hotel and get a special rate. Then, we reserve another room (a bigger room, like a suite) where we can all meet and talk whenever we want to. We always have snacks out and soft drinks. It's fun cuz everybody comes and goes and it's open only for us and we lock it when we want to.
I think we need to think about organizing this so that we have a plan since there are a lot of us and this will be REAL as opposed to cyberspace where we only take up a space where we write!!
Let's see if we can figure out how many days everybody is planning on coming for, what they want to do as a group and as individuals, etc... -
Hello to All My Sisters ..
Yesterday we celebrated my hubby and brother in laws birthdays. BILs was yesterday and hubbys is on the 31st Wednesday. I am going to be away at a conference next week for work from Wednesday night until Friday night so we celebrated yesterday.
It was fun and felt like my old normal life for a change, yah! My sister made home made baileys irish cream and we had a few drinks, yummy
My sister bought two cakes one black forest (dhs favourite) and one lemon blueberry cake. She is so funny, put sparklers on both cakes and came out of the kitchen and sang Happy Birthday to my BIL and then lit my dhs cake and sang to him.
My dh made home made ribs, potatoes, peas and we had a greek salad. We have so many ribs left over enough for dinner tonight.
We returned the rental car yesterday and my dh asked me if I wanted to drive his new vehicle home and I said no, not until the newness of it wears off.
I took the dogs for an hour and 10 minute walk yesterday afternoon and the puppy behaved wonderfully when we had our company over. I told my dh last night, see she is a good dog, very affectionate, just needs her daily walks to get rid of her energy. He agreed with me and said dont worry we are keeping her.
I havent scoped out any cheetah wear, maybe socks or slippers. This body wouldnt look very attractive in a cheetah outfit.
I would like a room mate for our August 25th weekend as I will be travelling on my own. Would be arriving on Friday and leaving Sunday? Anyone interested in rooming with me to split the costs?
Brenda our meeting is going to be wonderful, such a huge celebration of life and laughter.
Tracyseattle looking forward to receiving the cd. I love listening to music, always have it on, in my office at work, my car, home. Your boathouse trip sounds soooo romantic. Kudos to you your life is yours now and you are really enjoying it with your new love! I have made friends in real life to with two bc survivors, one is 38 and lives about 25 minutes away from me and the other lady is 45. Both of them are great ladies and we talk on the phone, one of them goes to my support group meetings. I met one at radiation and the other one through my physiotherapist. I wouldnt change those friendships for the world, they have brought so much into my life and we share a common bond. We can talk out our fears, hopes when others that dont have bc sometimes just dont get it!
Amy we miss you, I hope you are enjoying life and the break from the boards will give you some much needed peace and space to sort things out.
Gracyie joining the club with never having a martini too. I love American Idol, watched a bit of the first show of the season, but am been pretty distracted the past week or so getting everything in order after my accident. You are right, what are these people thinking and I heard about the one guy from NY asking Simon if he had a legitimate visa.LOL. The first part of the season has to be the best for laughs. Love your wedding picture.
Kelly you are a beauty. The glamour photos are gorgeous!!! The one of you and Teryn as a baby are too priceless for words. When is your Santa Barbara trip? Unchaperoned too, tisk, tisk, hee, heeJ
Victoria I know how difficult change can be, especially having to uproot yourself from a home that you have been in for many years and made it your own. The townhouse idea will take some getting used to for sure. I think I told you earlier that we are going to be putting our home up for sale in April as my dh wants to move into town to be closer to the firestation as he is a part time fire fighter. Right now we live on ½ acre and have been here since 93, it is becoming a lot of work now though. With the risk of lymphodema in my left arm, I cant push the heavy mower around anymore to move all of our lot and the snow shoveling is out of the question as well. In our case it now makes total sense all around to move. I will be sad to leave her though, lots of privacy and the one neighbour whom we can count on for anything. The Rv in the water was funny, didnt notice the pontunes on the side until I looked a second time. I like the Cabana boy minus his little fuz on his face. Love the cheetah coat, seriously You look smashing in that outfit!!
Debbie444 hope your cold it better. Sorry to hear about f your brothers step childrens father, did I get that right? You will have to get your body armour past the security gates at Heathrow to come to Chicago, how will you do that?
Tahdah I love your shots of Barbados. You are very pretty. Your goddaughter is very cute! I like your philosophy that we are women that had cancer and share a common bond, through this we have become friends. You have great taste, love the china. You are forty? OMG you look like you are in your late 20s, what is your secret, spill the beans .I need some of whatever you are using!!!!
Rosemarie I have to agree with you on the period thing. I have not had mine since November, dont miss it one bit, now if I could sleep through the night without waking up that would be the icing on the cake.LOL. Glad to hear that your followup with your PS went well.
Maryanne we got snow on Friday afternoon, made for an interesting drive home from work, took an 1 ½ hours when it is normally 50 minutes. I am more than nervous driving in the snow even though I have snow tires after getting hit by that moron last week. It will probably take a little while for me to calm down when driving. The snow does look pretty though. Crossing my fingers, toes, arms and whatever body parts I can for good news on your skin pathology.
The pictures of you are fabulous, your hair is nice. Mine is really, really curly, would never be able to straighten it out that much, it just puffs up.
Laura hope you are feeling better today and the pain is starting to subside. How is Buddy Love? Love the pebbles outfit. Where do you guys find these things?
Mary I;m rooting for you to be able to do that walk on Mothers Day. I have been taking our dogs out for long walks lately and it does feel good to stretch this tired sometimes old feeling body. Walking is good for the soul and gives you a space to do some thinking.
Ravdeb I am sorry that your Casey is declining. It is so hard to depart with our beloved animals. We went through that in June of last year with our 13 ½ year old shephard, he was our sweet, sweet baby. He was a wonderful dog but in the past few months of his life he couldnt get up off the floor without assistance, started to go to the washroom in the house and didnt look like he was enjoying his life either. Sometimes its hard to think about what it the best thing to do for our animals and we get selfish in our own thoughts in not wanting to see them go. I hope you find peace when you make that final decision. We still miss our shepherd terribly and he has been gone for 7 months, still have his collar sitting on our wallunit beside a beautiful picture of him. BIG HUGS my sisterJ
Love to everyone.
Here are some pictures of the weekend. -
Love, love, love the pictures, Victoria!!! You look so happy and so beautiful! Love the pics. YOur daughter is gorgeous. This is her mate?
-
Michelle, my hair is hard to tame too. To flatten the front I use a brush while it is wet to create a part. Then I apply a pomade, which is heavy to the wet hair and pretty much paste it to my head. When it dries it softens a bit but remains in position, at least for one day. By the next it gets springy again and I re-tame it.
Victoria, great pics, looks like you and your daughter enjoy each other. Mine is seventeen and just starting to see I have the occasional good idea.LOL. Is that your son with you?
Just looked up tickets to Chicago, can get there in two flights and arrive around 8, not too bad. Tracy, would you arrive Th or FR? OOOhhh getting pumped.
Fists up! -
Oh-h-h-h . . . drats, I just lost a long post. Didn't copy it as I usually do because I was so excited about the planning for our Rocktober weekend.
My opinion is that it seems best to plan for different excursions since some will want to shop, some will want to tour, and some will want to enjoy poolside. Perhaps we could agree on a couple of events where we all are together and then spend time in smaller groups or even couples/families, if we so choose. I would enjoy a nice dinner with all, including any partners that make the trip, where we hear about the place people visited and the bargins they found with the master shopper, TracyNY. I don't know, TracyNY, I just assume you will go shopping. LOL
So, this is a suggestion only:
Thursday evening: greeting to any that have or are arriving
Friday: greetings to all that are arriving
excursions in small groups or individually
Friday night: "ROCKTOBER FEST" for the Rocktober
girls alone
Saturday: excursions & fun, in small or large groups as we
choose; pool time; etc.
Saturday: nice dinner all together, including partners
Sunday: probably mostly fond farewells
I do not mean to take control here. I just want to make a suggestion that will get the conversation going and the planning happening. I agree that the main focus for me will be to spend time in your company, but it is fun to do things together as well. However, I do think our gab-fest should be called "Rocktober Fest". Just seems appropriate!
When we first began to plan I assumed my husband & I would drive to Chicago and offer to bring Graycie with us, since the Thruway goes right past her town. But, I am reconsidering that plan now. I'm going to check the flights. Perhaps I should just meet Graycie at the Buffalo airport and we could fly to Chicago together. Graycie, I'll PM you.
I love everyone's pictures and think each of you are georgeous in your own way. It just makes me more and more excited to meet each of you.
Mary -
I really like Ravdeb's suggestion to reserve a block of rooms and then have a get-together room. I'm not sure if my dh is coming along, but it would be nice for him to have a place to escape from all of us periodically! LOL
You are never going to believe this, but I'm getting a perm tomorrow. My chemo curls have just about grown out and I've had short hair with perms for years. So while some of you are still fighting your curls, I'm off to purchase some! -
lol you girls are too funny with all your animal print talk!!
A girlfriend of mine hosted a lingeree party last saturday and i NEARLY bought a gorgeous animal print bra.. Oooh, even my poor uneven boobies looked good in it!!
but then i couldnt justify spending $80 on something that perhaps wont fit after all the reconstruction is done.
Tadah, finally some pics of you! You look fantastic!!.. and so does your china!
Victoria, who is the HUNK in your last pic??? Is that your daughter's bf? If yes, what a lucky girl.. if not, can i have him??
ok, so now the plans are coming together! I think i might be coming on my own, and if thats the case, i will need a room mate!
Maybe we can start putting together a list of who is staying where and with whom.. then once we have a list we can work out who needs room mates. -
cindy -
I am so happy you chimed in! I am keeping my fingers crossed for you. But if you are having done to your hair what is featured in the dvd, you will look great! I thought your hairstyle in the dvd photo looked great! Please post a pic of the finished product!
kelly -
You look FAB in your outfit! It's just like you described! You are a hot MAMA! Vrooooooooom...
RoseMarie -
Your baby boy is a doll. You are the best MoM!
marymelodi -
Thanks! Your plan is a great start...I love it!
Paula -
I am so thrilled that you will be attending! I looked at a map...and girl, you are very far way! Shelby (and me) will be in absolute awe at being able to hug you in person! Yay!
EVERYONE -
I have made phone calls to several hotels re: the "block of rooms", but with it being Sunday, everyone told me to call back tomorrow. So, I will let you know then. The most important part of this is the pj-cheetah-rocktober-get-together is that we will all be together! I am so with you on this! Everything else is secondary. Love you all...
Laura -
My plan for our weekend would be just to spend a lot of time with all of you. I would also like to see Oprah, but I know that tickets to her show are really hard to get....
I will plan to arrive on Thursday and leave on Sunday.
I like the Rocktober Fest idea!!! Any other plans are fun with me too.
Maybe a hotel would have a two bedroom suite that several of us could share - we could use it for the party suite and then have additional rooms? Or even a one bedroom suite that had a living area that we could use for our get togethers and hanging out visiting.... What do you think?
Hope you all had a good weekend! (((hugs))) -
Will type later but just wanted to mention sometimes hotels have a "concierge room" or something like that. I stayed in a hotel and if you were on the 11th or 12th floor, they had a large 'living room' with tv, open bar for happy hour and hors d'oeurves. After hours, the room was open to use and you could still get coffee. Maybe some of the hotels have that. But I would bet if someone calls the manager, the manager would be able to figure out something for everyone. Maybe several adjoining rooms and a suite??
-
Victoria, I love you photos, they are marvelous!! You look so happy and tres chic!
Michelle, your photos always portray the fun person you are!!
--------
Today, we went to Disneyland. I did a "Debbie" !!! LOL. I tripped over my own feet in line and when I went down it was like a domino effect. It was like a slow motion movie, I saw myself headed toward Teryn and there was nothing I could do! I fell on her and she took down her friend Savannah! Savannah hit her nose, Teryn hit her head and I hit my nose, glasses went flying, I have a fat lip and it's all cut up from my teeth inside! They sent us to first aid and Teryn was crying because my mouth was bleeding. I was so embarrased.
Other than that, we had a great day and the girls had fun.
David was going to go with us with his daughter but Teryn mixed up the message because I was in the shower. When I called him back it went to answer machine and I assumed he was cancelling on us (his daughter always says she'd rather stay home when he has her) So when I left a message I said I told him we were going to Disneyland, "I told you we weren't staying and waiting for Faith to say she wanted to stay home, sorry you aren't joining us." Well, he thinks I over-reacted. I don't. It was based on the info I had. If he can't understand that if my information was correct, I would be hurt, not mad. Anyway, when we talked tonight, he said that they planned on going, he bought his daughter new tennies, etc ...... Oh well. I did end up telling him that today may have been different but he has cancelled because of her several times and he needs to take responsibility and not put it on her, its not fair to her. Either he can make definite plans with us or say no. End of story. Of course there is room for flexibility but if he continues to have her for 10 days in row, that he can return a phone call, can communicate. -
Gosh i hate this cold!!
Just a quickie to drop in as i have about 15mins beforeleaving for work and i havent washed my hair yet.
Sherry - if you drop by, sorry i missed saying 'Happy Birthday', ,have felt grottier with this cold than i did on chemo. Hope you had a good one.
Brenda - i thought i saw you at the virtual party - sat in the corner giving beauty advice?????????
Mary - Havent seen the new P & P film but a lot of it is filmed very close to here. A lot of it is at Chatsworth and Haddon Hall, two of my favourite places. I have walked through the sculpture gallery and touched the bust made for the film ( and its still in one peice!)
Kelly - hope things sort out. You went to Disneyland on a day trip? How cool is that!!
Michelle - in awe of th epost yet again. Great pics.
Didnt do much this weekend, we took catherine to the 'Dolls House Emporium' amd she bought a few bits. It was fantastic but if i had £58 to spend on a light fitting it would be full size for my house and not a minature!! Then we went to the army surplus supplies for Roger and Mark. They spent a good hour running around finding 'treasures'. Managed to make them leave most of them behind ( we really didnt need a torch attatched to a mirror on a pole for looking under cars for bombs, or a desert flak jacket) but we did buy some Jerry cans and some hammocks. It escapes me why but he must have a good reason!!
The funeral is on Thursday - i think my brother is paying for it . A biker gang is coming down from Scotland for the ceremony!! All part and parcel of my life.
Would love to start planning the meet but until flights are sorted I dont know what is happening
Debbie -
Forgot - Paula, when you look at a map, do you fly West across Europe, or the other way , across most of the States to get to Chicago??? Lay awake last night wondering that!!
Debbie -
Hey Deb,
well, Qantas (Aussie national carrier that i work for) has direct flights from Sydney to LA (over the Pacific). Then i will have to catch a flight from LA to Chicago on American Airlines or something... yep, its one looooong trip!! Thats why I intend to have a proper holiday in US when i go.
Just looking for a travel buddy now!! -
MIchele..great pictures. You sure have fun! Casey is not as happy as she was, but she perks up now and then. We are just watching her. Poor thing. The big thing is the piddling in the house. This irks my dh and she gets yelled at a lot and kicked out of the house for it.
Kelly... communication is the root here...it happens. Hopefully all is well, now.
but..Teryn fell on her head? you have a fat lip? Savannah has a bruised nose? Hope you are all put back together again. You've been posting with Debbie too long!
Paula..you have a loooooooong trip but it will be so worth it!!!
Debbie... FEEL BETTER SOON!
Cindy...do ribbons go on the curls? I WANT PICTURES!!!
Laura..thanks for making the phone calls. Am getting excited here in this part of the world. Can't wait!
Tracy in Seattle..That is a good idea..rooms that are big where we can maybe put 4 or 5 together (for those who are coming alone...like ME!).
Mary..I like the schedule. It makes sense. Everybody should take advantage of being in Chicago and seeing the sites for those who are interested and then have a time when we all meet for dinners together or the Rocktober Fest or whatever we are going to do. I totally agree with this idea.
I also think that once we all have our plane reservations, we let each other know when we are arriving so that there can be a Welcoming Reception for those already there. I mean..I can help welcome if I know the dates..I may get there earlier. Not sure of my plans yet. (besides..I am so anxious to see all of you and Chicago feels like MY home! ) -
Handsome son with beautiful mom. He could be YOUR mate. You look so young!!
I love how he called you for a recipe in the middle of the night..you are both on the same sleep ritual, too! And yes..we will be on-call forever. -
Kelly - it must have been a bad Dave weekend because my Dave and I had some issues too. My Dave is a sweetheart underneath, but he is rough around the edges and tends to be opinionated and gruff (he even admits it). In addition, he has lived alone for 15 years. I am very sensitive espeically when it comes to what those I care about think of me so sometimes it is a lethal mix.....
I was a step mom for many years and the issues that you describe with your Dave seem to be a lot of what I delt with too. Unfortunately, I think it is somewhat typical when you begin blending two families. Sometimes it is hard for the Dad to act like a Dad with their kids because they feel as though they have let them down by not being with them all the time. It is a difficult situation and you are right - communication is the key. If you ever need to talk about this and need some moral support, I have lived it and I am here for you! There are also some good books on the subject.
I am so excited that our plans are coming together! Are we firm enough that I can start shopping for airfare? If any of our travelers from overseas want to spend some time in Seattle while here in the States - consider me your tour guide!
Well, I guess it is Monday and I do need to work, so off I go... Have a good one, ladies! -
I have a stupid hair question. My last chemo was a year ago on Jan. 13. Just within the past week, I've noticed that quite a bit of my hair is falling out. Like if I give a gentle tug to a fistful of hair, maybe a dozen hairs will come out. It seems to occur mostly on the top of my head, so now I'm envisioning me with male pattern baldness.
My eyelashes have kind of cycled every few months with perhaps a third of them falling out all in one week. I think that has to do with the natural cycle of eyelash renewal getting screwed up when they all came in at once. Maybe that's what's happening with my hair.
Is anyone else experiencing this? I'm freaking a bit because I'm going for a perm today and maybe the chemicals will fry my hair follicles some more! If I go bald again, I'll have to get a cheetah-print hat to wear in August! -
Tracy and everyone else:
When you do shop will you consider Jet Blue? I looked at their flights yesterday and for me, from Buffalo to Chicago the fare was $159.00 round trip. The advantage of booking this far in advance. I also would like to nail down the cheapest fare as soon as possible.
So, can we make it firm this week that August 24-25-26 are the dates???
Can everyone respond yes or no???
Mary -
cindy -
Gosh...I don't know what to think about your hair! Maybe you should call the hairstylist and ask. Or you can call your Onc's ofc and see if this is normal (post-chemo). Have you started on any new meds recently? Sometimes hair loss is a side effect.
Victoria - Michele -
The photos are great!
Kelly -
OMG - I really worry about you and Debbie! LOL
Debbie - (Paula) -
I was wondering the same thing, but Paula will probably fly over the South and then North Pacific Oceans to LA. The opposite way - over Africa and then the North Atlantic would be farther.
EVERYONE -
I just did something totally spontaneous! I booked a vacation for Roy and I! We leave on Feb 28th for 8 days to the Gulf of Mexico - Riviera Maya near Cancun. We're staying at the Iberostar Paraiso Del Mar. I've stayed at several Iberostars but not this one. It's all inclusive and it's surrounded by a jungle. Do you think there will be some Cheetahs! I'm so excited...
Laura -
Yes, August 24-25-26 is fine with me.
-
Aug 24 - 26 is fine with me. I would like to arrive on August 23rd so that I have an entire day on the 24th. I am thinking of arriving mid afternoon on the 23rd (3:00ish)at O-Hare.... If anyone else wants to shoot for that arrival time we could meet up at the airport.
Also I have been looking at afternoon departures on the 26th say 2 or 3:00ish.
I will see if Jet Blue flys out of Seattle - not sure if they do... -
Mary - I just checked. It looks like Jet Blue doesn't fly to Chicago.... :-(
-
Aug. 24-26 is great for me. I will most likely be arriving around 7 pm as my kids will already be in school that week. I'll leave Sunday as late as possible My family will probably come along but I'll let ya'll know for sure asap. Debbie, maybe all the dh's would like to get together and take the kids somewhere while we all hang out??? this is soooo exciting....
Laura - how AWESOME!! Looks beautiful and I KNOW you will have a wonderful time!!
Cindy - after reading your post I had to give my hair a good tug. It doesn't seem to be going anywhere but definitely check with your doctor!
Kelly - hope you're feeling better!
Love the pics, Michele and Victoria! Victoria, you have some gorgeous kids! Michele, looks like a lot of fun!!
My neighbor knocked on the door this am - I had forgotten I told her I'd watch her kids until the bus came - I was still in my cheetah wear! (My dh told me yesterday that he couldn't take me seriously while in these pj's. Lol!!)
Have a great day ladies!!!!!!! -
I've started a list with the responses about August 23/24 to August 26 for "Rocktober Fest". That is just my name. We don't have to keep it. I just like it.
Okay:So far there are 4 responses althought Laura, I'm counting you as YES. So that makes 5 with me.
Yes for Aug 34/34 to 26 are:
Mary, Rosemarie, Laura, Tracy(Seattle), and Cindy.
In previous messages we heard from MaryAnne and Victoria. Oh, and I should count Ravdeb, also. Oh, and Michelle. If I'm not correct, let me know.
That makes 8, no 9 committed, so far. Committed to what, I'm not sure.
And, it sounds like Debbie and Paula are considering the long trips from England and Australia.
That's too bad about Jet Blue not flying from Seattle to Chicago. If I take Jet Blue from either Rochester or Buffalo we still have to go to the hub at JFK / NYC and then on to Chicago. So, I'll check with more direct flights. If we book this early (7 months in advance) we should get the best possible prices, right???
OK, I have my list saved on my desktop. I'll keep checking back and adding the names.
Mary -
Cindy, my hair is firmly in place. I'm not experiencing any "fall-out" !!
debbie, a funeral with a Scottish biker gang in attendance. Oh you have to take pictures of the gang people. Just put the kids in front of them and then tell them on the count of three to bend down and tie their shoes, you can pretend to be mad at them for ruining the picture!
Tracy, he ususally sees his daughter every other weekend and once during the week. But the mom has had babysitting issues and has been having David pick her up after school and spend the night. That's fine ..... I don't have a problem putting children first, I do it with Teryn. But, I don't let Teryn demand all my time. If I want to talk on the phone, I will for a normal amount of time. If the conversation is extended, it's after she has gone to bed. David has said that his daughter doesn't want him on the phone, doesn't want to come over, doesn't want to meet up for pizza. So, yes, I kinda put my foot down and said that if we are to continue, I need more than what he has been doing this past 2 weeks.
David does feel bad but he really has no reason to .... he didn't break up the family but still, your heart hurts when you see your kids bounced around.
Anyway, we talked on the phone last night, he called this morning and said he is coming over tonight. We are on the same page, thankfully. Before this had happened he had sent me an email apologizing for lack of time together recently and then told me how he felt about me .... so my timing for telling him all this was in line.
---------------
Those dates in August should be blocked out on our schedule!!! -
Tracy, I like your idea about arriving on Thursday afternoon. The Jet Blue flight I checked on would arrive at 3:00 from New York. We could meet and take a cab into the city together. I hope Graycie will also be flying with me. I'll be taking that whole week for vaction so I could really come there at any time. Don't know yet if I will come alone or with husband. Right now, I think alone. I want to be able to concentrate on just the joy of Rocktober sisterhood.
Whahoo!!!!!
Mary -
So, Kelly, I'm putting you down for YES???
Mary -
Yes, put me down for yes, but I am bringing Teryn. I am not looking into booking airfare yet --- the gov't still has my money!!
