So yesterday was his birthday, so OF COURSE I wasn't expecting anything.
We went out to dinner, and then he was opening the last of his gifts (which I put SOOOO much thought into) and he looks at me, and says--
there's something I want that I didn't get...
My heart dropped-- I mean, I literally was dumbfounded, b/c I really thought I kicked butt getting him the best presents ever.
I said-- what didn't I get for you? What did I miss?
And then he got down on one knee and said I want you to marry me.
Turns out my whole family knew ahead of time...
when we got home from dinner I wanted to call my mom, to see if she was coming out to a huge family dinner w. matt's family for his birthday. Of course, I had no clue that I was getting engaged, so I go to call my mom, and Matt's like-- babe, why do you have to call her right now? Cause he was worried that she would answer the phone screaming congratulations.
But I looked at matt like he was nuts-- I was like-- I want to call her before dancing with the stars comes on. Thank G-d my mom didn't slip up. Matt said he was breaking a sweat when I grabbed the phone.
But my mom kept quiet and it was all a surprise. I can't believe my siblings all knew and everyone kept it a secret. My family is the we-can't-keep-a-secret-for-even-a-minute type bunch. If one of us has something to share, within minutes someone is calling some one else, saying don't tell mommy I told you but...LOL
So I was pretty surprised.
We're having dinner with his family tonight, and they all knew too.
The ring is stunning. It is more than I ever really could've imagined. I slept with it on last night, and I swear my finger already has an indentation on it. Oh, and I ripped out a small chunck of hair with it too. I'll adjust.
-
Aaaaaaaaaaah (girls shrieking!!!!!!!!)
Oh, I'm so happy for you.
Let's have a party! To-ga, to-ga! Only cosmos, not beer.

And, what did you do to deserve THAT, little girl??? Never mind.
Are those PINK diamonds, too? I've never seen such a ring.

Wow, that's all I can, just wow! -
Whoo-hoo, congratulations! You must be floating today...well maybe not with that utterly magnificent beauty weighing you down.
I am so happy for you!

And since this is the fashion thread, we want all of the details of what you're wearing to engagement parties, what you're considering for your wedding gown, ETC.!
~Marin
-
OK....I just saw the pic...it's absolutely AMAZING, Beth!!!!!!!

Thanks girls!!! The pink stones are pink sapphires (a lil nod to my BC journey). The pink diamonds actually looked too light once they were going to set them in the ring, so we went with sapphires instead.
The center stone is 90 years old, and belonged to my great grandmother. I will be the 4th generation to wear it. My mother is the only one who didn't wear it and she got divorced. On the other hand, everyone who wore it had some type of cancer...OH JEEZ (but none of them died from cancer, all of other causes)
So I knew what I wanted and was involved in the design every step of the way, but I never saw the finished product. Matt knew the only chance he'd have to surprise me was to do it on his birthday, because it's the ONE day, I NEVER would've thought he would do it. Really selfless of him, cause I totally ruined his birthday last year.
Every outfit will definitely be a part of this thread for the next year-- you guys will be my wedding fashion team.
thanks again!!!
-
Sooooooo....does that mean that the wedding will be next year? Do you actually have adate?
Beth, that whole scenario sounded like a fairy tale proposal. He is so creative & clever, isn't he? The only proposals I hear about nowadays are the ones on the Jumbotron at hockey games.....eeeeeeew! Thanks so much for sharing your story...it gave me goosebumps!

Hi Beth,
I am not a fashion maven
, so I usually don't look at this thread but I saw your ring and I just have to say how beautiful it is and congratulations to the both of you.
-
I'm looking for the Coach denim diaper bag item #11175 and can't find it anywhere except for 1 on ebay and it's $500 and I'm not sure it's real - so depressing..I saw the bag 1 year before I got pregnant but didn't buy it because I was superstitious..now I'm kicking myself!
They do have a high quality fake one for $28 - lol
I can't bring myself to do it
-
Holy Crap - I missed the news!!
CONGRATS!!!!!
What a beautiful ring..I'm soooo excited for you!!!
I got married in LI........if you need help planning
-
We've actually been talking about everything for a few months. This September we're going to have a really big Sunday Brunch for all of our friends and family. My dearest friends are all out of state, so they can come for the whole weekend.
Then in April 09 we are taking our immediate family and their significant others (20 people) to Jamaica for a week and getting married there.
It will be on the water, and we're going to have a steel drum and reggae band. For someone like me, who is high strung, always on the go, and totally NOT laid back, this is going to be perfect.
It's just what I want.
I wanted to elope in Vegas, b/c quite frankly, I'm totally against traditional weddings. I'm not about to go into crazy debt over a wedding for 200 people that I hardly know. Plus, I don't want the stress of planning it either. Both our parents are divorced, and we are different faiths, and going to Jamaica will be so cool, and so relaxed, that everyone will love it. We're heading to a private island and straying in two huge villas, and the wedding will be on the great lawn inbetween the two, overlooking the ocean. I'm pretty stoked.
-
How beautiful - that's what we wanted to do..but we knew people wouldn't travel..(party poopers)
We had a steel drum band and it was perfect and the beach will be great....
I have a cool pic of the steel drum lady...we only had 68 people at our wedding..which was nice because it was fun and intimate
yay yay yay! I'm so excited
-
What kind of dress are you thinking?
-
Beth,
I am so jealous of your wedding plans. I love Jamaica, but I haven't been back in 5 years. My niece got married in Vegas and I know what the weddings in Jamaica are like because I have seen so many. I think you made the right decision to go with Jamaica. {Sigh} can I hide in your suitcase?
-
well to anyone that's been to a Jamaica wedding, had a beach wedding, or anything similiar I will take any and every piece of advice you can give me.
Maris-what was your dress like? It's going to be 80 degrees at the end of april... I'm thinking something totally non traditional. I'll post some links if I can find them to give you an idea.
-
Beth -- I didn't do a Jamaica vacation, but did do something non-conventional. In PA, you can married with a "Quaker" license. The Quakers don't believe in a head of religion, so instead, you just need two witnesses. We had a very small wedding at a very nice restaurant. For witnesses, we used the couple that had introduced us. My dh wrote the vows and everyone got to say something. I wore a black and gold jacket over a black slip dress. (I look TERRIBLE in white).
I should also point out that my ds was a "honeymoon" baby!
Hugs,
Hillary -
Sounds absolutely wonderful, Beth.
My dress was actually a prom dress, as I wanted something very simple. The wedding dresses were far too foo foo for me and I wanted something simple without a big ole train.

Please add my good wishes to you and your beau, Beth. Aren't you glad you came back now so you could bring us some very, very good news?
-
that is the most beautiful ring ever!

I hate to take up the fashion thread with this, but my father called me crying. He said it all set in, that I was healthy, and that I was with a great guy, and he just sobbed...
I never imagined that could ever happen in my life b/c our relationship has been so strained through the years.
okay now to fashion-- I seriously want a silk or cotton or linen outfit. I wish I had a picture of my SIL's gown. It was 35 pounds from italy, and a true ballgown. You couldn't really get next to her cause it was so big. She was a princess- she looked like a barbie doll, and that could never be me. I'm thinking linen on the guys too. Matt wants to wear seersucker in white and blue or white and green.
I think he'll be too hot, but who am I to tell the cute guy how to dress.
I want everyone to be comfortable. cotton, flip flops-- I don't care.
I just want to be comfy and fun.
-
oh and raye-- your new avatar picture is to die for-- you look adorable.
-
beth-i don't know you, but i've seen your entries and want to congratulate you. thaqt is an amazing ring.
dianne -
Beth....My father had 4 girls and he cried at each and every one of our weddings! It's a Daddy's thing to do, ya know? And then, of course, there's the cancer thing....
I adore the Jamaica/beach/steel drum & reggae idea! If it were me, I think I'd have an island-style sarong designed and wear awesome Carmen Miranda shoes! Or just some gorgeous espadrilles.....
~Marin
-
Beth, that ring is gorgeous!! I know the congratulations go to him (cause he's got YOU!), but BIG HUGS to you!!!
This is wonderful news
