has anyone been to this make up thing sponsored by the american cancer asociation? it's called something like looking good, feeling good. i went last year while i was still on chemo. it was orgasmic. they give u bunches of make up. really good brands like chanel, bobbi brown, and estee lauder. they show u how to apply the products properly. they even brought a few natural hair wigs for whoever wanted them. here in boston, it was held at the dana farber cancer institute, as well as a few other suburban hospitals.

Ok wax girls let me make you cringe.. hehe...
tri.. does 'everything' with an epilator - emjoi
I used to do my own sugar-wax(all you need is lemon water and sugar and a cold stone/marble slab).. but it got kind of messy and took a long time to prepare so switched to this.
have not been in for a while.
Missed y'all !
-
Okay, tri, does that thing REALLY work? I've heard so many negative comments about similar products and they are pricey. I'd love to know of one that does what it says it does. And without too much pain.......?????
Tina
-
That is the scariest looking machine ever!
-
Emelee - I second that! Yikes!!
-
You were right tri - that made me cringe!
Does it get easier after you have been doing it for a while?Yes, CBarbie - Sjogren's is one of my autoimmune challenges. I can't say that I've ever found a truly moisturizing lipstick that would last more than a few minutes. I take L-lysine for my general lip-mouth health (and of course Evoxac by Rx for some spit!) and I slather them at night without fail (Mary Kay Extra Emollient Night Cream).
But, speaking of lips (CONSUMER REPORT ALERT), I have found a decent gloss with good staying power. My drugstore had one of those BuyOne/Get One Free offers going for Maybelline, and me being of very limited funds, I thought I'd try something new (and cheeep!). Their SuperStay Gloss really does stay on for hours. It comes in a two-step, dual tube. The color has to sit two minutes after application before you apply the clear gloss. I have found that the color by itself is fine when you don't want that 'slippery' look. I bought a very neutural color and find I use it frequently. Doesn't come off on water bottles or napkins, but also doesn't become permanent cement in the sun like poor Laura experienced in Mexico.
San Diego sun is pretty close to that and this lip color comes right off with my make-up remover. As does my other find - Maybelline's Intense XXL Volume+Length Microfiber Mascara. Way back in this thread, I think someone else had mentioned this - and it was the reason I went in to the sale in the first place. Now, I have always been blessed with thick, long, naturally well-curled lashes. Never bought an eyelash curler and survived just fine on ye olde pink tube Maybelline. Chemo changed all of that. After losing my lashes, they grew back in skimpy (oh, break my heart!), then I lost them again (look, I can draw in brows, but this SUCKS). Now I think they are here for good (please, God) but again are, at most, half the density and length I had before.. This mascara (I got waterproof) consists again of a two-ended tube. Step one is a white-ish primer that coats the lashes, lengthening and thickening. I was afraid this meant globs of goo and a stuck-together mess. Nope. You follow up with wand #2 which adds your color (I got black). Lashes I didn't even know I had sprang up to be counted. Little anemic wispy things looked lush and elegant.
This stuff is a bargain!First new makeup I had bought in forever, and first new makeup I had to play with since my Look Good/Feel Better last year (like drw mentions above). I gave half of that stuff away since it wasn't what I could use, but the few that I kept were fun!
More in a minute!

Part of the challenge of the Sjogren's Disease that ComBarbie and I were mentioning is incredibly dry and sensitive skin. So when I find something that makes my persnickity skin feel good, I figure it has a mighty good chance of making a normal body feel terrific.
I was given a gift of a nice sized jar of Peppermint Rosemary Herbal Salt Scrub (with Green Tea and Dead Sea Salt) by Sunshine Spa, Eugene, OR (1.800.659.2077). It is an "energizing blend invigorating to both body and mind. Discover the nourishing power of pure herbal infusions while enjoying the intoxocating fragrance of essential aromatherapy.Deeply moisturize your body with Vit.E and our heling blend of Ayurvedic oils as you exfoliate and smooth your skin withSunshine's mineral rich Dead Sea Salt."
I am usually quite the skeptic with claims like this. I grow my own herbs. I know an essential oil from a 'fragrance oil'. But these folks are straight - every single ingredient is listed and they are all as they say. More important to you, you dip your fingers into the grainy stuff and smooth it all over you body and it does magical things. I use it as a reward after a day of working in the garden. After shampooing and soaping off the basic dirt, this scrub sikens my body and the oils seal in the moisture from my shower. And it smells fresh, not perfumey. I like it a lot - can you tell?
There seems to be several places to get it on the internet, incl. Amazon, of course
http://www.mysimon.com/9015-10955_8-38634854.html
Also - about the Photofinish - I have been using Estee Lauder's Idealist Skin Refinisher for years. It does make your skin feel smooth as a baby's butt, but is pretty pricey. I have occasionally bought it off ebay and saved a bundle, but you have to be cautious and know your product and your seller. When this is gone maybe I'll try the Photofinish and see if it is an improvement - you all make it sound as if it is! Does it ever come in sample sizes?

Lisa - Thanks for the info! I may have to try what you mentioned. Right now, I use Origin's Perfect World body moisturizer and I really do love it. It runs about $30.00 for little tub of it and lasts about a month. If I use that with the Philosphy Sea Salt I have pretty good luck. As loyal as I am to what I use, I also love to try new stuff, so I'm checking out the website you mentioned when I leave here.

The lip exfoliant I mentioned earlier is also Philosphy and gives really good results and helps to seal in moisture. My Sjogren's dx is a secondary autoimmune dx and is relatively new so I'm still searching out good stuff to use to combat it.

-
Hi tri!
Lisa/CBarbie - Have you tried a moisturizer for your body with shea butter in it? JMO - seems to offer the ultimate in moisture!
Lisa - Thanks for all the info...wow... And also, btw...my lips are still sore and rough! LOL
Girlz - I am so disappointed...I finally bought some liquid eyeliner. Just got through trying it and I swear...I look like a clown! LOL or better yet...Tammy Faye! It really looks HORRIBLE! What's the trick...
And I just remembered there's a Sephora about 10 minutes from my house! I am going there tomorrow to get the photofinish. I'll try ANYTHING!
LOLAs for waxing down yonder...I use Sally Hansen, Lavender/Vitamin spa wax. It comes with strips that you use on top of the wax to RIP with! LOL It's inexpensive too! It doesn't hurt anymore. Back in the 80's when I first started doing it, it hurt like hel*. It works really well.
-
The epiladies do hurt, however after a minute of agony it really gets numb and you do not feel anything. I have been using it for my underarms - facial hair ( there is a smaller version) and even 'down under' the whole thing.
1 - It is cheaper than getting it waxed.. or buying wax eventually.
2 - There is no danger of overheating
3 - It is a lot quicker to just whip it out and do it on the spur
4 - It does not yank the skin only pulls off the hair.
Once you get used to it I find it indispensible.
Mascara queen would be: L'oreal Telescopic mascara, my daughter ( who is a makeup junkie) swears that it is the best mascara she has ever used.
I used to use it now am anxiously waiting for the lashes to grow out !
-
Laura, don't feel bad. I can't do liquid eyeliner without looking like a streetwalker myself. It does nothing for me so I don't use it. And YES, several of my favorite lip and hand products have shea butter. After washing dishes, I reach for that every time.
ComBarbie - my Sjogren's is also secondary, but I have had symptoms of it since my late twenties. That was when I started the after-shower routine I use to this day. As soon as I step out, I put Neutrogena Body Oil from chin to toes on my still-damp skin. I put Mary Kay Extra Emollient Night Cream on my face, hands and heels. These are both 'occlusive' and seal in the water that we can't produce. People are amazed that I'm not slimey
but I soak it all in. In fact, just before I get dressed, I put on Step II which is chin to toes Original Keri Lotion. Again, a product that many find 'greasy' but disappears on me in abouut 90 seconds. It does keep me soft and smooth. Otherwise I would be flakey - even after Step I.As a bonus, $30 lasts me easily six months.

I used to wax 'down yonder' periodically, but my skin is so sensitive that even the 'warm wax' left my skin scarlet for about 48 hours. I use a depilatory. Of course, I don't go entirely bare nekkid, so the cream is not on any vital parts.
I guess I'm a wuss.
Grrlz - Right now I'm trying to think of how to camouflage an 18" abdominal scar at my bikini line. The outer thirds of it are already pretty faint, but that middle six inches where the vertical stretch was the greatest is pretty wide and reddish still. Ideas? Besides candlelight of course. Maybe this should segue over to the mojo thread. . .

Lisa
-
Lisa, you are a power makeup junkie for sure! LOL Thanks for all the recommendations.
The PhotoFinish is available in a trave size tube which is just half the amount of product for a bit less than half price. Imagine that! Cheaper than the regular size. Must be the packaging. Anyway, that's how I first tried it. Didn't want to go for the whole enchilada in case I didn't like it.
Am getting ready to do another upper lip wax sometime soon and not looking forward to it. I've been using the Poetic and it really doesn't irritate my skin the way other wax products have; maybe because of their before and after oils. Still, it hurts!
I am looking forward to scar fade recommendations for a tummy scar, too, as I will have one soon. Free TRAM the end of the month. Beth has said to use tons of Aquaphor during healing. Other than that, I have used Mederma on my mastectomy scar and really do not know if it helped or not. It was never too bad and I have a history of good healing. Still, that tummy slash does worry me. Not that I'm apt to be wearing a bikini anytime soon.

Tina, oh it's just something my dad bought me in Morocco ... he liked the tube it came in ... so he bought two and I only use it for my purse makeup kit so I don't run out too fast.
-
I use Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner - it comes in a little tub and you use a small eyeliner brush and smooth it out like liquid liner but without the tammy baker look - it's wonderful - I have one in every color!
I buy it at nordie's..
-
I'm baaaaaa-aaaaack.
I have a lot of catching up to do.
OMG- the epilady. I tried my friends once, and it was pure torture. My hats off to anyone that successfully uses that product.
I'm glad so many are enjoying the white rimmel eyeliner.
I found a great scrub and body wash that I wanted to share for those of you with sore tired muscles.
The brand is called aromatherapy/aromafloria
it is in CVS. The body scrub is a sugar scrub, and the wash has eucalyptus, lemongrass, peppermint, etc. It gives your body that tingly feeling all over, and soothes sore muscles.
Its also great if you have a bad cold or flu, and you put the body wash right on your chest and breathe in the vapors.
The scrub is gentle, and its great for women and men.
-
whoo hoo - the girl is back in town!!! Welcome Back!
I finally broke down and bought my favorite soap - Cetaphil (I had been using Dove for a couple of months) and what a huge difference it makes. Yes, I do cleanse my face with soap and water (eeks), but this Cetaphil is not your ordinary soap - it is non akaline, so it doesn't dry your skin, but cleanses well. I use it for my whole body.

now this, I couldn't resist to share!!!
I really love purpose soap for my face. My skin is so sensitive, and it's the only thing that isn't too drying for me.
-
Lisa I've been hearing lots about Biotin Oil it comes from England it's just new to Canada and all my friends are thrilled with it. I haven't bought it yet but they have it at drug stores the packaging is Orange and White, maybe you can find it. And good to see you back Beth. Pearl
-
Hi girls!
Laura - Yeah, I have tried the Shea Butter. Unfortunately, I need a bit more.
I have better luck with creams than lotions. I guess the difference is that the creams go on as what some people would say to be "greasier" than the lotions. But my skin is sooo dry, it just slurps it up and stays with me longer.
Oh, and don't give up on the liquid liner just yet! I used it for years, switched to a pencil for about the last 15 years, and went back to liquid about a week ago. I bought a Color Stay as I have to use drops in my eyes all day and I thought the liquid might last longer. I find that I just need to use a gentler touch than with a pencil.
Lisa - I'll have to try the oil on the skin first.
I use the Origins Perfect World on still damp skin and I do get good results. We have almost no humidity here, so I notice that sometimes it would be good to reapply. I'm wondering if combining the two might help.
Emelee - The gel liner sounds great! Does it last thru out the day? I loved my old liner (Clinique), but like I said, with using the drops all day I noticed that by the end of the work day the bottom liner was pretty much history.
Beth - Welcome back!
I'm placing a Sephora order this week, so thanks so much for the shipping info!
So, ignore me if you've covered already, but I thought I'd ask - what's in your make-up bag? I have too much to name, but here's my favorites -
The Present - Philosophy Clear Foundation
Clinique foundation
MAC eye primer & MAC eye shadow
Smashbox eye shadow
Color Stay liquid liner
Brow Pencil (2) One by Victoria Jackson; One that's a powder Anastasia (?)
Maybeline Mascara - keep going back to this one!
A bronze blusher by (of all people) Joan Rivers
Too much lip stuff to mention, but mostly by Philosophy, Clinique and Origin's
I went to pick up a new "highlighting" mascara by Max Factor that is regular brown or black but then you add "highlights" in different colors on the tips. (i.e. brown mascara with gold highlights) I thought it looked cool, but I'm having a hard time finding it.
So, what's in your bag?
-
What is MAC?
-
MAC is a brand of makeup you buy at a dept store such as Nordstrom's.
oh fun! what is in my make up bag?

the sharpener;
Loreal le Kohl eye pencil in Cafe;
Lancome Dual Finish powder;
Lancome Artliner liquid eyeliner in dark brown;
Maybelline Volume Express Mascara in black;
CoverGirl Cheekers blush in pink;
Lancome Fever Shine lipstick in Tempt Me (light pink)
Loreal Endless lipcolor in Crimson Joy
Eyelash curler
hair clips
foundation stays at home on shelf: Clinique SuperBalance makeup.
-
What is MAC???
Oh lord, do I need to get my hands on your face with some MAC products.
MAC was created for makeup artists. They have new looks every season, but mostly focus on a bold statement on the face.
The artists that work for MAC are really amazing.
Depending on where you live, you can either find a MAC store, or go to the MAC counter in Bloomies, and Nordies.
If you're not into makeup, then MAC might not be for you. HOWEVER, if you ever want to make a bold statement with your eyes, or get a makeup lesson, or buy the BEST brushes to put makeup on with-- MAC is my number 1 recommendation.
I may have to send some MAC stuff your way if there aren't any where you live!
-
my make up bag:
mac studio fix
mac lipstick
origins gloss
origins eye brow pencil
elizabeth arden bronzer
chanel lip pencil
clinique eye shadows
laura mercier eye pencil -
oops, i forgot-loreal mascara and origins eye brow pencil
-
OK, why does everyone have an eyebrow pencil? Is this something I need to worry about even though I have dark eyebrows? -
NarberthMom, I used a pencil after my brows fell out from chemo but discovered then that I could use it to fill in a tiny bald spot (colorless mole). Makes a big difference.
Also, if your brows are sparse in general, a pencil or powder in a lighter shade can fill in the gaps nicely without looking fake. You do need a bit of practice, though. At least I did.
So, for the makeup neophyte, how's it going? Have you found your perfect foundation yet?
As far as makeup bag, I assume you mean what I normally use, not everything in there! So, let's assume I'm going to be in the hospital for a few days. What do I take to make myself look halfway decent? Powder blush and mascara.
How about normal?
Revlon wet/dry eyeliner pencil
PhotoFinish
Chanel foundation
Tarte Cheekstain
YSL Touche Eclat
either Burt's Bees lipgloss or
O Glow gloss
Maybelline (pink tube) mascara
Just a painted, tainted rose.
aka Tina
-
Tina, No ... I haven't found the perfect foundation yet .... I got the flu instead! I'm now dreadfully behind on work and home life chores! -
I prefer a shadow over an eye pencil for brows. A make up artist once told me that powders look more natural. I have eyebrows, and a great brow shape, but they are so light, and very thin, that a little powder really helps to add depth to my eye.
Do I dare get my makeup bag out to write the list of whats in it?
this could be long
-
Oh Beth, do tell!
-
Maybelline has an eyebrow powder (compact) that comes with a small angled brush. It comes in different shades of brown/black. I've used it for years...it's pretty good.
Have a gorgeous evening! LOL
