Marin, the Aveeno hand cream does not have parabens but the cleanser and night cream both do. I really don't care. With everything I've swallowed and breathed over the years, I doubt the parabens in cleanser, etc. are even approaching a drop in the bucket. But, lots of people are running scared and I can't blame them. We all have our thresholds for worry. I do know that this cleanser is the first one I've used in years that absolutely does not strip my skin.
Cannot remember which aisle I found the gloves in but I'll check the next time I go to CVS.
Speaking of tanners, please, someone, name one that DOES NOT STINK even after several hours. I just love that sensation of flopping into bed at night and slowly, slowly I start to discern that obnoxious odor emanating from under the covers..........

You know what? I have always used my eye creams on my lips when they get really chapped. It does work. But, if you have very chapped and/or irritated or infected lips, NOTHING has helped more than Neosporin LT Lip Treatment.

Again, it does contain propylparaben, so don't bother if you are avoiding it.

I've not had any luck putting on tan in a bottle at night, it seems to rub off on my sheets. I just do it during the day and shower at night and it's fine.
-
Raye....I have the same dilemna, though when I have time, I do as Dotti suggests, only I "run around" without anything on until it dries, doing crap around the house and even perching a tip of my butt on my chair and hanging on my laptop. When I'm headed out within the hour though, I do use my blow dryer and it works pretty well, speeding up the drying quite a bit.
I still miss my tanning bed though....

Now, what I want to know is How did the botox modeling gig go yesterday, Laura? How's the chin? Did you like the pro injection? Do we get before and after pics? I'm having to live vicariously through you with these laser tx and peels and so on because I have NO budget for any of it. So DO tell!
Lisa

Very interesting site--thanks!
-
Tina - I use Loreal Sublime - in the darker color - it does not smell bad (at least from my perspective) and has a tint so you can see where the heck you are putting it.
I miss the tanning bed, too, Marin - so much easier (I may just have to go a few times before vacation, so as not to burn).
I can't run around the house because my Lab would lick the tanning lotion off of me, especially if I run; in dog brain, run = game. So I am pretty much trapped in the bathroom; I will try the blow dry trick.
Lisa, thanks for the link.
Laura - What happened at your shoot, Ms. Thang? Fill us in, so to speak.

-
"Lab brain." HaHa. That's a good one. I had a lab, too! A yellow lab, name of Freddie. She was a girl, though. I adopted her when she was a year and a half old. Big, barrel chest. DH used to call her Jane Russell, his full-figured girl.
What a sweetie she was. She, and all our other dogs, are in little cans in my pantry. Girls, I have used the tan in a can in the morning and it doesn't seem to smell too bad during the day, but just gets to me at night. Of course, I usually have applied it in the morning AFTER my bath and then not take another one at night. Maybe I should do the two baths a day thing and that would solve the problem. In the meantime, I will check out that link, Lisa. Come spring, I HAVE to use something because I am so white, I glow!
Raye, I will also check out (ie. sniff) the LOreal Sublime.
Am off today for my mammo, then an appt with my two ps's to talk about re-doing my recon. I'm thinking of trading the implant for a flap but it worries me. Good thoughts, please, ladies!
Tina
-
Raye - I'm so impatient that I ALWAYS blow dry myself after sunless tanning. It works great!
-
Oh, I love Labs - Freddie (what a great name) - also love boy names on girls - heh! My Lab is a boy, Riley (can be a girl or boy name).
Tina, I will be thinking positive thoughts today as you go for your mammo and your ps consults. Best wishes with all three appts.
Now I have a tattoo question. I've never had a tattoo - but am considering one on my chest area where I had my proph mast (the rads side is obviously out). Do you think if I choose recon down the line that would mess things up (a flap)? Beth? thx.
Raye
-
So I have a question for all of you who wax for a Brazilian....do you actually wax away everything, including any hair inside the labia? I ask because my laser treatments didn't go there and I've shaved the area but get some stubbly re-growth. It's not really readily visible but it has been chafing my bf. What's a girl to do
?~Marin
-
to Raye- yes a tattoo would mess up reconstruction down the road. They woukd probably have to cut it out, or you would risk it getting stretched. My friend had a tattoo of a sun around her belly button. Then she got preggers. The tattoo literally came apart. One part was on one side of her belly, and the other part was on the other side. Needless to say she had laser removal.
Why not get a tattoo somewhere else? I want another one so bad, but Matt's not into them.
Marin- yeah, you're gonna need to wax that area, but let it grow a little first. My ex boyfriend used to complain about the stubble/chaffing a lot (serves him right LOL) with matt it's not a really big deal cause we have no other choice but to use a condom every time. And please spare me the posts of how much that sucks, because I live it every day.

Laura I went to your site. I CANNOT believe you didn't tell me about it sooner. There are a few really cute things on there that I will definitely be ordering in the future.
As far as the self tanners, I used to be a big fan or the loreal sublime spray, and the neutrogena version. It's been so long I forget. But I do agree that you should use one that has a tint to it so you see what you're doing.
Marin- did you try the rimmel white eyeliner yet? I thought of you as I put it on today.
Is anyone as into shampoo and conditioner as I am? What kinds do you all use?
-
Bumble and Bumble, Aveda, and Kerastase..expensive but I love them

-
Oh girls...I had my free Botox appt on Saturday. I don't see a difference! I'm going to call tomorrow and ask them about it. But...b/4 I left for the appt. I asked my dh to take a look at it - so he would see the b/4 and after - and he said he couldn't see it! LOL I told him to be honest, and then he said, well I see a little wrinkle. But he broke my heart when he said he thought I looked 10 years younger than my age! I almost cried! All in all...it was a beautiful day!
Beth - I have created/designed almost 70% of the products at the site. Thanks for the compliment. Our customers let us know how good we are. In fact...our approval rating is 90% positive! We're doing something right...I'm honored to be a part of their team.
Raye - Are you going to be in Chi-town?
-
Hi!
I've been reading this thread since it started. I am a makeup neophyte. Prior to chemo, I almost never wore any. I had very long thick hair, which basically hid my face - LOL! Now that I've got my short chemo-do (finished chemo 5/22/07), my face is visible and makeup is a must! On a day-to-day basis, I use moisturizer, eyeliner, mascara, and lip gloss (current favorite Burt Bee's Lip Shimmer in Papaya).
Here are my questions:
(1) Can I use the Rimmel white liner with just my minimal make-up or will it stand out too much?
(2) What is the minimum I can do about foundation? I feel like I need something to even out my skin tone, but I won't do it if it is too complicated.
(3) Has anyone had experience with the mineral makeups?
Thanks!!!
Hugs,
Hillary
P.S. I wish some of you gals lived close to me and could give me a makeup lesson! -
I just tried my sister's mineral makeup this weekend and it was nothing short of a miracle. Makes your skin look absolutely flawless, but not made up and it felt very light. In fact, I couldn't feel it at all. I'm ordering it! What she has is called bare minerals. $60 for the set, which includes all the brushes.
-
White rimmel eye liner will not stand out if you don't over do it. All it will do is open up your eye and make it look brighter. The thing is, you have to line the inside of your eye with it. It doesn't work if you do the bottom lid, but on the outside... the point of putting it inside, is that it extends the whites of your eyes.
I think the bare essentials for not feeling nude but not looking made up, are white eyeliner, brown mascara, clear lip gloss, and a touch of bronzer... its a warm spring glow...
I saw a few articles on mineral makeup, and some of them might contain things that aren't so good for the skin, so be sure to read the labels.
gsg let us know how you like the kit when it arrives.
I love burts bee's products. Especially after learning how the company got started-- (saw it on oprah) it makes me love it even more!
-
the cosmetics i've been using for a couple years now are bo cosmetics and even with the mineral makeup, i know i'll always keep some bo cosmetics on hand. it's a really great line. i love her concealer and foundation. her products are available on-line only. the girl whose line it is (bailey), used to do makeup where i get my hair done.
-
Laura....It might be a good thing if you don't notice a big difference, but you shouldn't be seeing any real wrinkles in the site they injected. In my experience, the aesthetistician always takes before and after pics so that they and you can see the change (I'm sure they do it for legal reasons too), so I'm surprised they didn't take a photo. The other possibility is that they didn't use enough....?
As for lining the inside of the lid with white, I found the Cargo liner I'd bought and never used and have been getting great results. You are so right about it, Beth!
Also, do be careful about the minerals makeup. I got the whole starter kit awhile back and broke out terribly from all of the foundation stuff. I love the blush stuff though and the brushes are fun.

ah, good stuff goin on, I see.
Beth - thanks about the tattoo warning. I just want SOMETHING there. My husband is not a big fan of tattoos either, but he wouldn't have minded on there for sentimental reasons.
Shampoos/conditioners: My favorites are Pantene - either hydrating curls or the one that is just plain hydrating. I also like John Frieda's Brilliant Brunette line. Makes my hair shiny and soft.
Marin and Beth - ouchie coochie! Doesn't that hurt? Oh, the price we pay for beauty and pleasure...
Laura - It sounds like you had a beautiful day. You look very very young in your avatar - like in your early 30's. I was actually wondering why you were getting Botox. You look great! I will have to check out your site. Yes, I will be in Chicago next Tuesday - Thursday for business. I am excited, I've never been there.
Hilary - maybe some loose power applied with a brush? I would like to try the mineral make ups - I've never tried them, but they look so nice on tv and easy. I usually just use my powder - unless I am going all out, I will use the liquid foundation.
-
Hillary - get a tinted moisturizer (with sunscreen!) You get some evening out of skin tone without it feeling heavy.
-
Ok ... here's another basic question ...
How do I know what skin tone I am?
I'm a dark brunette with brown eyes. I used to tan easily as a child, but now I get red before I tan.
Thanks,
The MakeUp Neophyte! -
Hillary...Alot of foundations have a color chart that you can match to your skin. For example, one (can't recall which) has a bunch of tinted slides that you hold against your inner wrist and when you can't see the outline of the little slip of plastic, that's your color. If you want to spend slightly more, go to a department store counter and consult with the salesperson or try Sephora and ask for help. I love Clinique foundations and they come in so many colors. Again, the salesperson should be happy to help you find your shade.
So I forgot we were discussing shampoos and conditioners. I like Matrix (the volumizing line) for everyday shampooing and Kerastase for special occasions. I also use Avalon Organics peppermint shampoo off & on to clarify and wash away built-up product. For conditioning, I'm still searching. Since chemo and the re-growth, my hair is so different and the biotin I take is making it thicker by the minute. Also, I have it highlighted, so I need a moisturizing conditioner. The problem is that my hair is also straight and baby fine, so I need to avoid products that make it flat or limp. If anyone has any suggestions....?
So about the botox....my laser hair girl had her lines zapped with botox before her wedding. She's in her 20's

Finally, I'm posting this link because the stuff looks fun. I was reading an article about making beauty products from household items and food and this link was provided for lazy girls like me who don't want to bother with the mess of blending ingredients:

i think foundation is heavy for every day wear, unless you have problematic skin.
I would go to clinique or mac and have a foundation made for you by a pro...
its hard to find the right shade in a drug store.
-
At my age, I've tried almost everything out there and I can state with enthusiasm that the bare minerals is the best I've found and the absolute easiest to use!
It is so light weight, don't even know it's on, it stays, and has no color lines because you use the brush to blend it in.
I tried it on at the counter and bought the set. Now, this comes from an ebay addict who NEVER pays full price for anything except my moisture and exfoliator. It has been worth every penny and lasts a LONG time..
Heck, I should be doing commercials for the stuff. I have very red cheeks and upper jaws and this stuff smooths out the reddness and equals everything out very well.
-
Dotti -- When I tried Bare Minerals, I found it looked cakey on me, Someone suggsted that the person who applied it put on too much. Have you ever had that problem? Also, how did you decide on bare minerals ... there are so many others to choose from?
-
Bare minerals were the first out, as far as I know. I've been using it for a LONG time. I agree that if you use too much or mainly, do not brush it in properly and long enough, you have a problem.
I would also guess that if your moisture had not completely absorbed you'd have a problem. I put my moisture on after I brush my teeth and before I do my hair and I do my face the very last, even after almost dressing.
You really have to brush it around and around and around to get it smooth and even.
I don't use mineral veil, don't see the need for it. I've never found it gave the "luster" they talk about. I also mix mind, myself. I have a dark and a light and according to the season and my skin color, mix it in the travel size compact and use that.
All I add is a touch of blush (I know, I have red cheeks, but the minerals decrease that and smooth out my complection, so I add a bit of color where I want it.)
I do think their brush makes a difference and when you put it on, use a firm stroke around and around. I don't know anything about the copies, I've just stuck with what works.
-
i'm wearing the bare minerals today but don't think i did a great job of putting it on. thanks for the tips, dotti! i'm anxious to play around with it.
-
I have wondered about the bare minerals. this thread makes me want to try it or one of the knock-offs.

right now it's not feeling that light on me. i think it might have been the lotion they provide to put on first that feels a little heavy, which i hadn't put on when my sister applied it for me the first time. i might try it just using my normal arbonne face regimen and see if it feels better. if it doesn't, i might go back to my bo cosmetics...i'll give it a chance.

Hi, girls. Long time no type.
I've been running around doing errands and having consults. Looks like I am going to go ahead with the free TRAM the end of March. Ouch. I am so not looking forward to it. BUT, onward and upward. Must look cute in the meantime. Oy, vey. How about looking good while in the hospital for a week? Maybe some suggestions?
Beth, you asked about shampoo and conditioners. What is your hair "type?"
Hillary, welcome to this little group. If no one here can answer your make-up questions, THERE IS NO ANSWER! We are make-up junkies.
As far as your skin tone, you really cannot generalize by hair and eye color, no matter what "guides" have to say. I think you will just have to make a trip to the make-up counter at a dept. store (where they have sales ladies and you can try things on your skin) and see what looks natural. Of course, I would not let anyone use anything "unhygienic" on me, but the better counters have ways to try on without getting buggy. Ick.
The only foundation I have ever had that comes close to my skin tone is by Chanel.
Expensive. I think it's the Teinte Natural. My skin tone is light but not beige-y as so many of the colors available are. I need a much pinker base. Even my concealer has to have a pink tone (I use the YSL). It is truly AMAZING how good you can look with the perfect color foundation. Brings out the best in your eyes and hair. Makes it easier to wear colors that ordinarily aren't the best. I do go very light on the foundation. Sometimes mix it half and half with moisturizer. Actually, I had pretty much gotten out of the habit of using foundation routinely but, with the inspiration of this bunch of ladies, I am wearing it almost daily again.
I tried the Bare Minerals a couple of years ago. Bought the trial package with all the make-up and brushes. Used it for a week or so and didn't like it so sent it all back.
Laura, I took a peek at your website; you are ONE TALENTED girl. Everything is so cute.
Marin (and Beth, too) you little minxes! Oh, it hurts just thinking of waxing off in those areas. You are just a couple of hot tamales!
And, yes, Hillary. It would be fun to have a real life make-up session. With wine.
Tina
