It's so sad to see how little traffic is now being posted on BCO. And even sadder to see how the "Active Topics" now have to list 5-6 days worth to show over 100 active threads. We are not fooled by that inflated number--only about 40 active posts per day.
As I navigate here today, it seems the load speed for pages has been faster. It only took two full months after the failure to launch on March 1 to speed things up? Now it's May 1 and we still have so many issues which are keeping people away. Still waiting for answers from the "leadership" here at BCO!!!!
I see in the latest Release Notes from Apr 29 that the following has supposedly been fixed in the last week:
April 29, 2022
Profile and community signatures
- Refined profile caching in the community discussion forum signatures to more quickly display profile updates to community signatures and improve site performance.
- Corrected inaccurate rendering of information saved to the profile, including:
- Date format for year in treatment signature (ex. year was listed as 0002 instead of 2012).
- Breast reconstruction types
- Radiation treatment to another part of the body
- Chemotherapy showing as "other" even when specified
- Where cancer was found if other than your breast
- Ability to edit whether you've had genetic testing done
Educational content
- Improved SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to better help those in need find our resources.
Are members experiencing an improvement in these areas? When is BCO tech team going to make the posts readable by increasing font size and color so I can stop having to type in BOLD font!
Mods, I've scrolled past your original top of page post here so often, but it's so outdated!! Really, you list outdated browsers, and XP, Vista, 7, etc. as operating systems in use!!! Time to update your own posts after you fix the threads.
-
All my diagnosis and treatments disappeared
-
Sarah,
Your diagnosis and treatments were deleted as part of the profile correction. Guess they can’t be inaccurate if they aren’t there. 🤔
ceanna - It’s really sad.
-
Work in Progress shows every time I go to another thread on my iPad. On my Mac Book Pro, some days it doesn't show up at all, other days only on certain threads and on rare occasions with every change. 🤦🏼♀️🤷♀️
And, yes I'm sure I want to log out!!!!!
-
slousha here!
In your new edition you have changed my DX for HER2 from positive to negative!
I was HER2+
-
So now my treatment and diagnosis data are further corrupted. Some dates have been lost (such as surgery date) or modified somehow to reflect the date I started Tamoxifen.
-
My diagnosis and other information is correct. Yea!I'm getting use to the navigation, although would like less clicks to logout.
I'm still having issues with the search. Is there a search tutorial? For example, when I search for survivorship, it brings back lots if topics that probably contain the word survivorship. How do I just find information about it?
-
I raised the issue about the difficulty using the search function about 6 weeks ago. This was confirmed by other posters.
If a website needs a search tutorial, I'd say the website is a failure.
In the case of BCO, they have certainly failed to deliver to their promise from the BCO press release of March 15th "The redesign reflects the varied experiences and needs of people with breast cancer and encompasses all aspects of the user experience — from a fresh and inclusive look, to improved technology and search functionality and additional personalization options. All of the features were developed to best help the people around the world who depend on Breastcancer.org for guidance....
...The mission has always been to empower people to make informed decisions for their care. Now, with an upgraded technology platform, the organization can provide its valuable resources more efficiently, as well as deepen the connection with everyone who engages with the site....
A key component of the redesign is offering simpler ways for people to find information relevant to their personal breast cancer situation." https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/breastcan...
And from the Work & Co. website: "The new experience focuses on improved technology and search functionality, and a more personalized user experience to help people find information tailored to their specific breast cancer situation. A chief goal was achieving a calm, directed experience to ensure users can easily uncover resources they need — whether they're researching risk factors, were recently diagnosed, completed treatment, or are living with metastatic breast cancer." https://work.co/news/breastcancer-org-launches-new...
I have done a bit more wandering around the site. I don't know if this is a recent addition or part of the original redesign, but on the main site I somehow managed to find a page that lists "All Topics" alphabetically. I decided to look up a few key topics.
DCIS. Under "D", right? Nope, under "D" we find Diet and Nutrition and Dietary Supplements.
Well, is "Invasive breast cancer" under "I"? No, of course not.
Where do I find DCIS and IDC in the new BCO index? Under "T", of course, for Types of Breast Cancer.
Does "T" also include Tamoxifen? Of course not. Tamoxifen is actually under "H" for Hormonal Therapy.
Now, while Hormone Therapy is a common term, the more correct term is Endocrine Therapy. Do we find that under "E"? No, under "E" we have Eating to Lose Weight After Treatment and Exercise.
Seriously, what group of pea-brained idiots came up with the index? Obviously, pea-brained idiots with a minimal understanding of what people diagnosed with breast cancer will be looking for. https://www.breastcancer.org/topics
By the way, I happened upon the "All Topics" list when I was looking for a search bar on the main site. Couldn't find one anywhere. And now, when I go back and try to find the "All Topics" page (without benefit of using the link I provided above), I can't get back to it. I have no idea how to I got to that page.
What a navigational mess.
One of the excuses that has been flying around here for 2 months is that the Discussion Board problems were caused by the main site redesign, because of how the redesign affected the old technology. The focus of the redesign had not been the Discussion Board so these problems were accidental, and all will be fixed eventually when the Discussion Board is redesigned.
But here's the problem with that excuse. The redesign of the main site doesn't work either. On that side of the site, some of the issues might be accidental, caused by the old technology, but many of the issues have been caused by an appallingly bad redesign, which appears to have been led by people who don't understand anything about breast cancer and the information that breast cancer patients want. What is supposedly a better website, in terms of giving patients access to the information they need, is in fact a horrible mess, with it being nearly impossible for patients to find the information the need.
Last comment: In reading the Preview of my post, I notice that all my sentences continue to be blended together, with no spaces after periods, even though I leave spaces when I type. To say that it is challenging to read is an understatement (if there are typos or sentences in my post that don't make sense, it's not my fault). Another among the many failed promises of this redesign is "improved legibility". This formatting issue is just one component of that, along with the small type, the color choices that reduce legibility, etc..
-
Beesie, thank you for reiterating the mission of BCO and how they have failed to keep their promise. We seem to lack any real leadership and accountability from BCO. How can over 2 months go by and tech updates go from bad to worse.
I'm sorry to hear the latest corrections/release still have the site displaying member's diagnosis lines wrong. I have not touched my diagnosis line during this fiasco to try to correct it when it was displaying incorrectly, and now it is again correct--for the moment.
There are a lot of posting, typing errors that occur since March 1. I've noticed I cannot highlight a sentence and hit delete. It only deletes one letter of the sentence instead. Same with bolding any text. Instead of being able to highlight and bold a word or sentence, you have to hit the "B" bold before you start to type. I continue to try to remember to click on bold before I type so I can read the text as I type and it is readable to all when it posts. Perhaps all of us can click bold before we type until BCO tech team makes the change to a readable font size and color.
As to the spacing issue, Beesie, my guess would be that the coding used only allows one space between sentences and automatically changes your entry. I see that your entry has one space after each period, but not the two you probably typed. The new standard for research documents and writing style guides is to place only one space after the period. This is a change from the style you and I probably learned when we learned to type. I think this happened to decrease the size of data files because an extra space counts. Try typing after you click on Bold and your text will be easier to see and read.
Have a good day everyone!
-
Nothing happens when I click the Bold or Italics symbols on my laptop. On my Android phone, the 'Bold' and 'Italic' don't even show up as options. The bar starts with the Deleted symbol, and ends with the Alignment symbol.......the first two & last two symbols (neither the 'Insert Horizontal Rule' and 'Insert Emoticon' symbols don't show up at all.
-
Mods, I would implore you to prioritize the necessary fixes to our diagnosis and profiles. It is really making it difficult to provide and get solid advice as key information (such HER2+ becoming HER2- as noted above) is incorrect. I badly need to update my profile as I am on my third chemo since I last provided an update but am not going to touch anything with all these issues. Not that it really matters as all chemotherapy regimens are showing as “other” regardless of whether it’s a standard treatment or not.
I understand there are many issues to address and that you are working hard to fix things but, at the moment, it seems like the approach has been a bit random. Given the time it is taking to address all the issues it might be time for a more strategic approach. It might give members some comfort if they knew what was being worked on rather than a list of what was supposedly rectified. Just a suggestion.
-
I am picturing the "tech team" as a 19-year-old kid in his parents' basement. As he works on a sort program for the index, he yells, "Mom, any idea what this DCIS is?" "Honey, I think it's a type of cancer." "Okay, got it!" And so on.
Prove me wrong.
:
-
🤣🤣🤣
Except we don’t ask Mom for advice, only Cheetos and grilled cheese sandwiches!
-
AliceBastable, I love your explanation. It makes sense as much as anything around here makes sense. No, let me correct that. It makes more sense than anything around here.
But about the kid in the basement, I will prove you wrong. Remember, according to Shift Lab, the IT company that did the back-end work, the redesign of the breastcancer.org website was an almost 4 year project, culminating in the successful launch on March 1st.
Here's what BCO spent on the redesign just in one year, 2019 - this is a screen shot from BCO's tax return: (https://apps.irs.gov/pub/epostcard/cor/233082851_202005_990_2021041917962270.pdf)
I don't think a 19 year old kid in his parents' basement gets paid quite that much. No, it appears the Deloitte did the concept / strategy work, Work & Co did the site redesign, and Shift Lab did the back-end.

I would like to echo sadiesservant's plea to fix the issue with the dx & tx siglines.
In the past month I have spent considerable time in other msg boards, fb etc and none of those forums have the capacity to have public siglines. I would suggest that this is one of the strengths of BCO & should be bumped to a high priority. On fb groups for example, the conversations are disjointed because we have no way of knowing about people's markers or what tx they've already tried. People reply when they're at a different stage/different cancer/different treatment & it's often totally unhelpful.
This is one of the things that BCO did well. I know many of us would scroll through other people's siglines to see how long they've been at it, what they've tried etc. It provides knowledge and a basis on which to have deep, meaningful conversations.
Pls fix it.
-
We can assure you the treatment and diagnostic profile issues are our top priority, and are continuously being worked on. It is a very delicate, complicated, and intricate process and while we are able to make other, smaller updates, it does not take away from our intention or attention to correct these profile issues ASAP. We understand and agree this function is vital to our Community and we are absolutely doing everything we can to get it working correctly. We will let you know when we have an update.
Thank you
-
It’s been over 2 months since your tech team broke the user profile when they expanded it. Given our profiles are a big part of your new content management system, I’m surprised they broke it so spectacularly.
Please stop claiming it’s too complex. You need to hire better tech people.
For example, you stated in your release notes that you corrected the year format. After 2 months??? I saw you broke the dates as soon as I opened my profile in early March. You break the dates by using the wrong data type or format. It doesn’t take another month and a half to fix (even with having other issues). I’ve worked for multiple clients who had different ways to display dates especially in different languages (French vs English). Not hard
-
The tax return certainly explains that BCO "leadership" has been taken for a failed project by these consultants and design companies. After 4 years of planning, a failed March 1 relaunch, and after 2 months of extremely poor delivery, I would expect management and board here to explain themselves!! I am now so glad not to see the "catfish" fresh, new video ad when I log out, but discovered today that it has been replaced by an for more donations--That's offensive and NOT going to happen! Why would I donate now if any donation is going toward this mismanaged fiasco? This kind of disrespect by BCO management is very hard to stomach. Do you really think we would donate now? I just have to believe BCO thinks we're really dumb! If you really want to help people facing breast cancer as you claim in the ad, get this discussion board fixed now!!!!!!!!
-
I still have not received an answer on why the site was so dramatically changed?? Why was it necessary, what did you want to accomplish? Now, that you see the site is a complete failure why don't you return to what was working so beautifully ? Donate, no way, not until I feel you have returned this once thriving website to what it was.

moth, I'm in a kidney cancer group on FB, and it's a great, supportive group with good information. But the lack of sig lines drives me crazy! Nearly every post, the first question is: "What stage and grade were you? What was your type? Partial or total nephrectomy?" Blah blah blah. It wastes so much time! I'm in another kidney cancer group in Cancer Survivors Network, and they have a button by our profile pic that opens our info page quickly. Unfortunately, it's not a very active site. The whole site was redone about a year ago and it's been crap ever since. Sound familiar?
-
Actual glitches are in bold. Other text is commentary and hope for a better future state.
I suspect one of the challenges in "fixing" this site is retaining old data fields on at least a dozen years of past (happily living in survivorship), and unfortunately, many "passed" users. In order to maintain the integrity of the old posts, the new data fields must be able to translate the older posts. The rich history of the community is one of the things I really appreciate. That said, posts with no activity in several years are fairly frequently commented upon, with the topic being stale and a lot of the original posters having moved on. Retaining the active state of thousands of old posts creates constraints in new development. Kind of like renovating a house in a protected historical district. The rules around what can and cannot be done are probably given by a historical board that doesn't really understand the impact of all their decisions. The house is full of surprises akin to knob and tube wiring, hidden leaks, mold, and things that cannot be repaired because there are no replacement parts to be had.
I have a hunch they are trying to update their current entry fields with mapping to old fields, and mistakes are being made. I don't think we have 19 year old coders, but I do think we've likely got coders working in a system they had nothing to do with creating that is poorly documented (very common issue) and the new developers cannot be aware of every line of band-aid code that was written in many years ago.
I have a feeling that the developers feel like they are bailing out old leaky boats. One patch is made, and another leak is sprung in an old patch.
Yesterday, I was waiting on my daughter to graduate. I was on my iPhone SE using software 15.4.1 (most current) using built in Safari. Was using cellular data. I typed a lengthy post, pushed submit, and thought it went through. I started typing another post, and wanted to insert a photo, I went out of the site to look at my camera roll, and went back to Safari, and I had been logged out. This meant my draft post was gone. And when I looked, the prior post I thought I'd submitted was not there. Of course, at that time, I gave up.
The community search function is very odd. I've been searching the community pages for cold capping, and many times I will have a search result that brings me to something like page 132 of 375. Not one of the 10 threads returned have any reference to cold capping. I suspect it's in a preceding or following page, but not in the returned result. Also, I don't seem to have the ability to search a single long thread. The search spans the entire community.
I'd also like to comment about the inclusivity aspect of the site as it is today. Does inclusive mean that the first page has a photo of Black women encircled by the tumor shape? I don't see any other indications of improved inclusion. I'm personally feeling a bit alienated every time I log in and the site tells me it doesn't have enough information about how I browse the site to provide me recommendations. My profile is complete. There don't seem to be any cookies that keep me from seeing the same pop ups over and over about the site being a work in process. As many hours as I spend here, I think you should know enough about me to not show me either of those messages.
I know that the site building and repairing are a priority, but I've now done enough reading that I'm able to spot gaps and holes in the informational site. I think having the ability for users to report incomplete or inaccurate information would be vital in maintaining the currency of the site. For example, your description of Luminal B cancer is incomplete. Although certain classification of Luminal A vs. Luminal B is usually confirmed via genomic testing, the hallmarks are high grade HR+ tumors with high recurrence scores. Many display loss of ER or PR or have lower levels of those hormones. When I was going through your pathology guide and website, I was falsely thinking I wasn't Luminal B based on your description, since I'm HER2-. Many Luminal B cancers are HER2-, and they now have a worse prognosis than HER2+ since we have such good treatments for HER2+. I would expect these changes to be coordinated back through your medical advisors, but I think these sorts of distinctions should be accurate if you wish to be a go to site for women diagnosed with breast cancer.
I know this post goes way past a tech glitches post, but really, it's all related.
-
Thank you sarahmaude for your interpretation of what is going on with the coding on the site. You are completely accurate and we couldn't have stated it better ourselves. As we've expressed, much of this was unanticipated, and has been upsetting to all involved. This is the reason we are steadfastly moving toward a new platform, so the coding pieces can all "talk" to each other without causing more ripple effects. We are making headway here and hope to have some answers and a plan in place very soon.
Also, thank you for reporting the glitches you're experiencing -- we have reported those to the tech team, as always. And, your insight on the content has been passed along to the editorial/medical team to review and weigh in. Thank you for that as well.
As a note to the search experience you have -- have you tried using the keyword function along with selecting the forum you wish to search in? We do not have a granular thread search at this time, but that's something we may be able to do with the new platform. We will report the issue with the link not taking you to the post with the keyword. This function does seem to work for us when testing, but it may be just another system/os-determined glitch.
Thank you again for your comments. -
Big shout out to you mods! My chemotherapy treatments are now showing! 👍🏻 I may be brave enough to attempt to update my very long list of treatments. 😁
-
sarahmaude, Mods - About the hazards of migration, it’s part of the job. Consultants almost always don’t build everything from scratch. In one project I would use multiple applications and may need to write in multiple languages. Here’s a secret: I’m not an expert at all of them. Even if I created something myself, after enough time passes, I will not remember everything. This redesign had so many problems from the start that it made people wonder if it was tested at all. I hope any new platform is tested thoroughly in a dev environment before going live.
-
SarahMaude may have well described the problem, but what I don't understand is related to things Beesie said earlier. If 4 years of planning and consulting went into this, along with payments of hundreds of thousands of dollars to these companies, why on earth weren't the problems SarahMaude notes caught/anticipated/tested before the failed launch? 4 years and hundreds of thousands of dollars to people who are supposedly professionals and know what they are doing? Yet none of them seemed to have any idea that what's sounding like a fairly routine issue when working on an older system would happen. Something just doesn't add up here.
-
@sarahmaude, thank you so much for posting out some specifics of this rebuild on legacy code. Loved the old house analogy. This said, as @serenitystat points out, there should have been testing before the live feed. Unfortunately switching back to the old site is almost impossible now because of the extra material posted. At least the database appears to be intact. And my IBC group continues to remain connected.
I should add that my signature still looks like the dog's breakfast. -
The data source isn't quite intact. I ended up looking at posts from a member who hasn't posted in a long time. In her final thread, she had links to other topics she had created to help tell her story. Well, not all of the links worked. Some of her threads were deleted. They were not political threads.
When migrating from one data storage system to another. It's very easy to just compare the row counts of the tables to be sure you got all the records.
I'm not saying the migration is easy, but don't use the complexity as an excuse when you fail to be mindful.
-
Mods,
On the Ibrance thread today a member reported having login issues and was mostly stuck at the login page. This is the page that I've asked you to put a mailto link so users don't have to try to find the right email address to report problems.
Let me help you out. The error page that pops up due to a server error already has the snippet of code you need.
-
Sadiesservant, thanks so much for letting us know, that is certainly good news. Please keep us posted if you notice any other issues as you continue to update your profile.
-
I have avoided adding to this thread as my issues are the same as most are experiencing and I have no tech expertise. The issue of testing on real bco members perseveres. Although the mods stated earlier that this was tested by bco members before it was rolled out, I think that’s big fat lie. I am not conspiracy minded nor do I usually suspect ulterior motives but I simply cannot believe that ANY of us tested this. So on top of all the other issues, I can’t imagine that anyone believes that this was tested by actual members (who should have been rightfully horrified by the mess!) yet no tester pointed out these issues? I can deal with a lot but I detest being lied to.
