Rant away about COVID, the vaccine, etc.

"I do feel that many of the elderly who died were indeed going to be dead shortly of one thing or the other."
Thanks for that, the same is said about all of us who are stage IV. A few less of us burdening the health system might help the economy too, right?
-
-
When I have a heart attack, I would really like for there to be room in the hospital for me and not have it filled to capacity with the unvaccinated COVID patients.
-
hear hear nopink2019. The callousness stings
-
“ The public has a duty to each other, no matter the age of the people involved. & bottom line is I don't see the public health measures as "mutilating" anyone.“
Moth,
What a wonderful statement! I appreciate all the stats but I don’t need to exam them on such a micro level, i.e. How many would have died anyway even if we didn’t have Covid19, to make decisions about vaccine or whether these deaths constitute an emergency. In the US we have had over 600,000 COVID deaths. Although I am usually very fact/stat driven in my thinking my humanity wins out here. I simply can’t diminish the lives of so many people by saying, heck, some would have died anyway !
-
runor-
I've reviewed your numbers. Your math stinks. It ignores so many factors that it's meaningless. You know it's not just the elderly and immunocompromised who have died.
Where's the cost in your calculations due to the loss of HCWs? We have art made from the faces of those killed by COVID. We have lost capacity in hospitals due to death, disability, and burnout. Many were in the prime of their lives. Other young people died or survive with long covid. We have a new disabled group from all ages including kids. We have other deaths due to hospitals unable to provide quality care.
We continue to vaccinate the world against infectious diseases contained here (polio, measles, etc), so it seems trying to vaccinate the world at the same time because of the new virus isn't out of this world thinking.
Still glad you're on the other side of the country and delighted you're not in charge of health policy anywhere.
-
December 11, exactly! When we need the hospital services, will we be able to access them or are the beds going to be full? in BC we have the data on who is in hospital - the unvaccinated are being hospitalized at hugely higher rates. That isn't responsible at all & that's why vaccine mandates are needed - to nudge the reluctant ones to either get vax'd or stay out of public spaces & reduce risk to themselves & others.
-
Flattening the curve was always to protect the healthcare system.
-
Wow. Just wow. And not in a good way.
My neighbor, Ina Mae, who died of Covid19 may have been 89, but her life had value. She was loved, no, beloved by everyone who knew her. She was the kindest, most cheerful human being I've ever met in my life. She taught English as a Second Language for forty years to some of the poorest, most underserved children in Los Angeles. She mattered to them. She mattered to her children and grandchildren and great grandchildren. And she mattered to me. To have her life so cavalierly discounted is quite frankly revolting. I'm beyond angry. I have no words.
She had NO health issues. She probably would have lived another ten years in reasonably good health. Her mother did (104). Her grandmother did (98). Her death was a tragedy.
And just as a little reality check, the only reason we ONLY have 4.5 million deaths so far, is that mitigation measures were put in place very quickly. If we had done what you seem to be advocating, just let 'er rip and to hell with the consequences, we would most likely have had 77 million deaths. Or more.
-
runor subscribes to the idea that we should have let the virus do it's thing. Her news sources have led her to this insane idea.
-
Estimates for the 1918 pandemic - 500 million worldwide got the virus and 50 million died. In the US, 675,000 died but the population was 1/3 of today’s. If we had no vaccine, over 2 million would have died in just the US from COVID. This isn’t a debate or a choice, except for those who can’t be vaccinated for health reasons.
-
Trishyla, may your neighbor Ina Mae rest in peace. When people describe the elderly as expendable because they may or may not have several if not a little more than a decade of years left, it makes me sad. All I could think of is when my own 86 year old grandmother passed away, not from covid but from a serious illness. She was a beautiful person and made an impact on everyone she met. Her funeral had many many attendees. But regardless of how wonderful she was, we know she suffered in the end. I hate thinking of how many of those elderly who succumbed to Covid suffered in the end. To live such a beautiful life and then fight like what is described, for weeks. It's a tragedy no matter what, and often times alone. It makes me cry knowing this.

For those who hate when others wear a mask, do they demand their surgical team go maskless during the operation?

I'm feeling personal attacks here. This is not what I want. We each have a right to our opinions without a group coming in and personally attacking. If that's what makes you happy, that's not morally right either.
Off subject. How many of you are morally right and have helped the homeless or the poor get dignified living conditions or any other number of things that this world sucks at. Give examples of other things you've done for the betterment of this world. You can cloak it in the betterment and moral thing to do, but the most important people you are trying to protect is yourself and your family.
I don't want anyone to die from this shit pandemic, just as I don't want anyone to die from cancer. It's not realistic. Even vaccinated are going to die. This vaccine will have to be given over and over and over and still not protect you fully. I'm not doing it. If you were a moral person, you would have dignity and compassion for EVERYONE. YOU DON'T.
How about what just happened in Afghanistan? Any of you write to your government and give them a piece of your mind and say how morally wrong it was for the government to just leave Americans stranded over there?
Stop with the morally right crap because if you truly cared about everyone, you would care about the unvaccinated too.
You are entitled to your opinions, as are the rest of us. Stop the attacks.
Are other states or countries bringing in the monoclonal antibody sites like our governor has? I haven't been watching the news because it's so freaking one sided. This has helped tremendously with lowering our hospital admissions, and it's only been a few short weeks.
You all know as well as I do that Runor would not want one person to die if it was possible. She didn't create this problem.
If you now feel I'm attacking you, no I'm sticking up for runor. She is human too. She has feelings too. I care about all of you, even with the hard back-and-forth. It's been rough with so few of us in here not being vaccinated. We can sit back and let you have your say.
I want posts of articles, I want posts of facts, I want posts of rants, how pissed you are that anyone is not being vaccinated. I don't want personal attacks.
-
Trish, Always - I'm sorry for your losses.
One of my MILs had knee replacement last week. Doing ok so far, but my husband hasn't seen them for a long time. I hope they stay well enough for a visit next spring maybe.
-
runor your attitude is horrifying. From a purely logical perspective, if I squint really hard and hold my breath, I can *almost* see what you are driving at. And maybe if covid was only affecting those in their 90s who already had health issues more people would agree with you. But that is simply not the case. Basically anyone over 60 is at higher risk and in the western world most 60 years old are looking forward to many more years, if not decades, of life. Hell on this very site many, many women in their 60s and older are scrapping and fighting and doing everything in their power to scrape out a few more years before cancer kills them. Would you advocate that anyone over 60 shouldn’t get treatment because they’re pretty close to dead anyway?!! Of course you wouldn’t — but that is just how cavelior and awful your words sound.
-
SERENITYSTAT, of course they do, just as those who didn't want a vaccine in their body that was not fully approved by FDA turn down monoclonal antibody treatment in the hospital since it is authorized under EUA also. NOT.
-
Thank you, AlwaysMeC. She was a wonderful person. She's one of the reasons both of my daughters became teachers. I will miss her as much as I miss my mom.

serenity, moth, trishyla,
I appreciate your comments. Do we really want to reduce the value of human life to ghoulish actuarial tables? This reminded me of a little post-revolution (April 1978) joke from my Peace Corps years in Afghanistan.
Curfew was 11:00 pm following the revolution and people were careful to heed it. Here’s the not entirely funny joke. Ahmad and Daoud, two police officers were patrolling a neighborhood at about 10:45 pm. A man walked by and was immediately shot by Ahmad. “Why did you do that? Curfew hasn’t begun yet!”, shouted Daoud. “Don’t worry, I know where he lives. He wouldn’t have made it home by curfew.”, replied Ahmad.
Yup, he would have died anyway so shooting him was no big deal. Or how about Dan Patrick, lieutenant governor of Texas? Earlier in the pandemic he suggested that perhaps grandparents, who in his estimation had already lived out most of their useful lives, should take one for the team, i.e. younger generations, and reserve medical care for the young.
Yes, this pandemic is an emergency and downplaying it’s severity simply because some, particularly those old folks, would have dies anyway diminishes human life. I am not prepared to go there.
-
KBL — people have given you facts and articles over and over again and you dismiss them as not quite the right facts for you. People have responded about monoclonal antibodies and their governors. You ask and people bend over to try to help and explain — then you move the goalposts. We rant about something and we get accused of attacking.
I don’t believe that runor actually wants anyone to die — but I still find her attitude horrifying. Is this a personal attack on runor? I don’t see it as one, but maybe I’m wrong about that.
-
If someone truly believed the earth was flat that would not be an opinion. It would be wrong information. Thanks to the internet there is a lot of wrong information out there and we have to be careful to distinguish between opinion and fact.
-
KBL I don't think I have once attacked you or anyone else personally on this thread. However, I feel that your bringing up other topics which you believe should serve as a moral measure is not fair because there are many ways people can practice their ethical responsibilities that may not be included in your measurement. The topic is ranting about Covid related matters, and some members feel like ranting about uninformed people. If you feel informed then I say look the other way, and let them rant.
The topic has nothing to do with Afghanistan, or De Santis, or helping the poor. It's about Covid.
I for one, respect your sharing of information even some I don't necessarily agree with. If you truly believe in choice, then freedom of expression should be no different. Nobody is actively threatening harm to you personally. The very definition of ranting includes scolding vehemently (Merriam Webster). If ranting is what you intended, then some of these members are doing exactly that towards the majority of anti vaxxers. If you are not an anti vaxxer then ignore it. I know you aren't an antivaxxer because you have already said so, and I believe you.
-
KBL - Highly vaccinated areas do not need so many monoclonal antibody treatment sites. More vaccinations lead to fewer cases. It's cheaper because the vaccines are free.
Is Regeneron only under EUA or does it have full approval yet?
-
Oh, wow, KBL, seriously???
"Off subject. How many of you are morally right and have helped the homeless or the poor get dignified living conditions or any other number of things that this world sucks at. Give examples of other things you've done for the betterment of this world. You can cloak it in the betterment and moral thing to do, but the most important people you are trying to protect is yourself and your family."
You have no idea what ANY of us do within our communities or for the greater good. THIS subject is completely off topic, a straw man. THIS is not okay. PLEASE DON'T suggest this kind of thinking again. NONE of us need to justify what we do or don't do. The topic is COVID. Got it?
-
Misinformation should be differentiated from opinions.
-
KBL,
If you want to debate Afghanistan, that's a whole other topic. I speak Dari (not well anymore) and lived in Kabul for two years. Yes, the withdrawal could have been handled better but the situation in Afghanistan was never going to change for the better. Was I surprised that their president fled and their military, which we poured untold dollars into, simply gave up without even an effort to fight for their own country? Nope, it truly was inevitable. No country, the British, the Russians, have ever bent Afghanistan to their will for one simple reason. They have all failed to understand to understand the complexities and totally non-western attitudes of the country. We simply have no framework to understand a tribal/clan based society and have made little effort to do so.
Ok, now back to vaccines!
PS: What personal attacks? And yes, bringing up all those other things fits the straw man bill to a tee
-
I think sometimes reading things you do not like or agree with feels like an attack but it isn't. It's just reading things you don't agree with.
I'm willing to engage with someone who is hesitant because they either do not understand the mechanisms of the vaccine, or do not understand the dangers of the disease. We have something to discuss then.
If someone has just taken the opinion that they don't want to, can't make me, then there's nothing to talk about. "i'm not doing it" - well, what's the point? the conversation is over.
Don't we all know that things are not 100% guaranteed? Vaccines need boosting. Immunity wanes, viruses mutate. There's nothing to say if you're requiring insane absolutes.
Public health is for the good of the public & it requires participation from the public, for the good of all. We do all these things for the same reasons you can't flush your toilet into people's drinking water. Individual freedoms need to be balanced with public and community good. In my opinion, I think people should do everything possible to stop spreading disease - vaccinate, mask & social distance, or stay home. It isn't fair to the community to behave otherwise.
-
Let's not go in attack mode against runor. We all are trying to make sense of what is going on and how did we end up where we are. My uncle died of Covid-19 at age 87. For most of us cancer patients, we won't make it till then. Who is paying the price? His grandchildren and all other children who got stuck at home to protect us and the elders. These kids are paying the price with high depression rates. Recently, my friend's father, 84 yr old who was vaccinated got covid and he is been in bed for 4 weeks and can't even go to the bathroom by himself. I wonder from all the data we read, how many got back to normal life and how many are alive but bedridden.
Also, my personal opinion is comparing the chickenpox vaccine and the covid vaccine is like apples to oranges. People took one shot of the chickenpox vaccine that protected them for life. The covid vaccine has become profitable for Big Pharma who wants to sell and make a profit from its invention every 6 months!
-
Even the hermit in a Serbian cave got vaccinated!
-
If you all get to say what you want, so do I. It does have to do with morality, which has been brought up many times. If you don't want me to talk about morality of any other kind, then don't bring it up. The topic says Covid, vaccines, etc. I am putting out there that morality has been thrown around so much. Tell me what other wonderful moral things have been done. So, in other words, you get to talk about morality, and I don't. You get to talk about the vaccine, but I don't get to talk about a treatment when you get Covid. I think not.
What I see here is that the vaccine is THE only right thing, that you are right and we are wrong. Not one comment on any of the articles I posted. I'd be surprised if you read them because you are so steeped in your position that you dig your heels in that your way is the only way. You say I haven't listened. I at least have read what you posted. You're posting articles from the New York Times and CBS. Do I trust those sources? Absolutely not.
If I were to post articles from a different scientific perspective, you're going to sit there and tell me you would read them and have an open mind?
I don't want to attack any of you personally, but you are onthe moral high ground, and us lowly people who have not succumbed to the pressure make you very angry. And what really makes it worse is I've decided not to stay in my little cocoon of trying not to create drama for myself. I could back off and sit here nice and quiet because that's what you really want.
It's almost like the political divide. Us and them. I don't care, as I said before, what color you are, what sexual orientation, what political party you follow, if you are a good person, I am friends with you.
How many of you have given up long-term friendships because of this crap? I would never do that, no matter what. Moral. Okay.
I can count on one hand how many people have come in here to say they have not gotten the vaccine. We could easily slink away because this is hard. I'm not doing it. The funny thing is, I look at how many aren't vaccinated in every state and country. Others are being silent because they don't want the drama.
