Hi Lumpie,
I seldom check this website, but I do have some info for you.
On the recommendation of a friend, I went to Amy of Denmark for my very expensive (but nice looking) wig. Address is 11302 Grandview Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20902, (301) 942-3733; website is name of the store. Even if you have really good insurance coverage, which I do, it will not begin to pay for the wig. They also have less expensive ones that are not made of human hair. Whatever kind you get, be sure and get a wig band with velcro, which are sold at Amy's. I also got a number of cheap cotton/poly caps there that I wore to the gym every day for my work-outs. Everyone at my gym knew I had no hair & were extremely supportive.
Because it's human hair, you have to have it washed and styled there every month or two.
Hope this helps.
Paula

Lumpie,
You are welcome to my wig if you want it. I got it at Eivind and Hans in Georgetown. They did the styling. I think it was $300 or so even after insurance paid some. It is a long brunette wig. It is synthetic, but very natural looking. They actually recommended synthetic. You would need to pick it up from me as I am moving in 10 days. Please privatemessage me if interested.

Since this is a Northern Virginia forum.... I was exchanging messages with a contact at Metavivor regarding get-togethers for stage IV-ers. I have been to their get-togethers but the closest group is around Annapolis which is a bit of a trip. If any Northern-Virginia stage-IV-ers might be interested in occasional informal get-togethers, please feel free to post or PM me.... just to get a sense of the level of interest. no obligation.... Thx.

Thought I would post this info about a study at Johns Hopkins, since it is fairly close by for those of us in No Va, in case others may be interested. There are three cohorts being studied: those in treatment, those with benign breast disease and healthy volunteers. If you have completed treatment for early stage cancer, check with the study - I thought the research coordinator told me they were interested in post-treatment early stagers, too.
In short, they are studying markers in blood.. and possible other tissue as well. They basically just want some blood and for you to fill out a questionnaire. The material notes that they may request medical records and even tissue samples. The program coordinator told me that they aren't requiring the tissue samples at present so, while they could at some point in the future, do not to allow lack of tissue to deter participation. They would like additional blood specimens if you change treatments or have a change in status. You do not have to be receiving treatment at Johns Hopkins to participate. If I can get us closer to a cure with a few vials of blood, I would do it every day of the week! I would be glad to share an info sheet on the study and contact info for the research coordinator. You can also get those on the clinical trials website. The national clinical trial number is:
ClinicalTrials.gov identifier (NCT number): NCT01937039
and here is the link (posting it two different ways in case one does not work for you):

Does anyone know of a medical transport service that can drive me home after a biopsy with sedation at Inova?
-
Marguin,
Someone in this group or from Life With Cancer (@ Inova Fairfax) may be able to. (For that matter, I may be able to. PM me if you would like to discuss. I am going to be out of town a few days coming up, but not for a while yet.) The American Cancer Society has a ride program. Not sure whether it usually includes a post-anesthesia option. The hospital may have something through their volunteers that they could offer. There should be a social worker that serves oncology patients that could help. THey are pretty good about coodinating with Life With Cancer. In the past, I have hired a home nursing service. They met me after the procedure and we took a cab home. As I recall, the minimum hire period was 4 hours. It was pretty pointless because I was fine but, of course, the facility requires you to have someone with you when you leave. Hope you find just what you need....
-
Hi Lumpie, Thanks for all the options, esp your offer to drive me if you are around! ☺
I ended up scheduling a medical transport service.
Take care,
-
Marguin, Very glad you have a solution worked out. That is a relief. (I have a local friend who is able to get time off to chauffeur me when necessary. Without that, I would be in a pickle so I really sympathize!) Take care and I hope all goes well.
