    Super52-- yours was right out of the chrysalis, while April1964's appears to have had a close brush with death.

    please advise: yesterday i bought a beautiful clematis on sale... as I was gently (maybe I should’ve been more gentle) eased it out of the pot to plant it,the main stem started to break in half due to the weight of the plant... I ran and got some duct tape and taped up the stem and then trimmed off some of the upper vines and planted the poor thing anyway... I apologized to it and watered it... any hope that it’ll survive ?

    April, hmmm....I am not a very successful gardener, so someone else can probably give you better advice. My thoughts are that even if it doesn't survive this year, perhaps it will still come back next year if you keep it watered since the plant broke but didn't really die. We planted a young Kousa dogwood tree last fall and its trunk split down the middle over the winter after a wet, heavy snowfall. We screwed the trunk back together to see what would happen, and miraculously, it survived and is flourishing. I realize the stem of a plant is different than the trunk of a tree, but as long as the plant itself survives, it should come back in the spring. You just may not get to enjoy its blooms for the remainder of this growing season.

    thanks super! I just watered it and it stlooks unhappy ... I had no idea that the stem was that delicate... that’s amazing that your tree survived !!

    April, clematis are perennials and it shouldcome back. In fact, some you are supposed to prune. I would just prune it back where it broke and let the roots get established and I think you will be OK next year.

    April- I get out early on the weekends and they are out first thing for a drink from the feeder which lies below this spot. But they like to graze off the flowers too. I waited patiently until I could catch this one foto. I love my little hummers, they are drinking up a lot right now as they begin migrating (and some already are-I have an aggressive rufous in my yard which chases all the other birds away). By early October, they are all gone.

    Did you know that hummers migrate from the exact same spot for summer and winter? Ours here in the area go to Costa Rica. I would like to go with them sometimes.....

    Love the hummingbird photo. Gardens looking very nice. My containers are suffering and spent but I didn’t find anything at the garden shop yet to replant. Mums and pansies have not arrived.

    Hi, well I did the wrong spelling, it is the jimsomweed and the plant is actually pretty large, like a shrub size and it blooms in the wild here in the late summer. I was told when I moved here, that some people like to "roll it and smoke it" but it is very poisonous and thus, people don't usually plant them in their garden either.

    The flowers open during the day and close at night, that one happened to still be open at dusk. I will try to take a picture of the bush on my walk tonight. It is also referred to datura.

    What I learned reading this link below today is that it is in the tomato family!

    Interesting reading. I remember a book about Don Juan which featured hallucinogenic substances and some kind of vision of the world. Written in the 60's or early 70's, I believe.
