It was especially useful this year, and I had a good time. I presented a poster on breast cancer that seemed to be helpful.

    Good Mornin' Cave Chicks!

    Get ready y'all, 'cause its...……..

TWO CENT TUESDAY!! - Men are from Mars....Women are from Helen Reddy

Waaaaaay back in 1971 Ms. Helen Reddy wrote and recorded a tune you might (or might not) be familiar with…'I am Woman'. This song came on the heels of the late1960s bra burning crew…ladies sick and tired of double standards, endeavouring to break through every aspect of a male dominated world. From the smoke of the smouldering bras the Women's Liberation Movement (WLM) was born. 'I am Woman' became one of its anthems. Sadly, good ol' Helen's song later became a wee bit of a joke, parodied by comedians, and sometimes snickered at….even by women! Thing is, if you really listen carefully to this lady's beautiful voice & lyrics, these feelings still reverberate within women in some form or other.

Now, this isn't meant to be a puff piece on women's lib or retaliation against the opposite sex. I truly like men and admire/respect the men in my life…… I know many women that I can't say the same about. Both sexes can equally suck large. We've come a long way baby, and the changes in attitude towards women in the last quarter century has def advanced, but it seems we still have some ground to cover.

I drove over that ground lately. My car, *sigh*, my beloved car. She's been whining for months whenever I turn the wheel left or right. Being 'strong & invincible' as Helen Reddy sang, I did my homework. The two gaskets/seals on the power steering pump are as old as dust….and probably just as dry. I've done the rounds of no less than FIVE shops asking to have the seals replaced before investing in a new power steering pump. My requests have been met with 1 pair of rolled eyeballs, 2 "pppppffffft yeah ok", and 2 "nothing wrong with the pump, replace the lines"…..which I did…..and asked for the seals to be replaced at the same time. They only replaced the lines. On my SIXTH return because of the continued (and louder) whining, I begged the mechanic and service advisor for seal replacement….they FINALLY, but grudgingly agreed to replace the seals. You know what's coming don't you? FIXED FIXED FIXED!!!! No more whine!!

While paying a measly 23 bucks for the seal replacement I had a long convo with the service advisor. He suddenly seemed to have grown a new respect, and admitted that they were very sceptical of my repair opinions. Apparently they were surprised at the simplicity of the fix. On previous visits he had been talking directly to my Cavedude, not even looking my way….now suddenly he spoke directly to me….and my Cavedude was the one in the backseat now. I can't say it didn't irk me that I had to 'prove' myself to get his attention. Why hadn't any of them taken my concerns into consideration earlier? My Cavedude is convinced it's because generally a woman's word isn't as valid in the automotive world. That the stigma of 'woman driver' still hangs over our heads.

You can imagine the Cheshire Cat grin that was stamped across my face while we strolled out of the shop to take my baby home. I couldn't help but break into a loud (and VERY badly) sung "I am woman hear me roar" right there in the parking lot (did a nice lil' happy dance too!). Anyone within earshot didn't appreciate my cracking voice, but my Cavedude's laughter said that at least he did. A quick high 5 and my darling car was homebound….quietly!

My two cents says we have miles to go, but the strength gained from so many other Helens fighting the 'battle' long before my time, has paved the way for us....I'm grateful. My small victory over the mechanical issue is a drop in the bucket, but it's still in there!. If by some miracle Helen Reddy is reading this post, I take my hat off to her and her immortal words "If I have to, I can do anything"…..matter o' fact Helen, I'm considering a course in auto repair….and the only thing holding me back is what might happen to my manicure….oy vey! Geeze! Meh, I'm not perfect, but "I am womannnnnnnnn!" :))))))

Egads, you hit the nail on the head. I had a mechanic try to upsell me springs for my car when I went in for brakes. It was amusing to say the least. Also, had a service rep try to upsell me on brakes then tires when it was obvious he wasn’t listening to the problem I was having. The problem was the car behaved differently at 55-60 mph on the highway after getting new tires. Mechanic got in the car with me driving. The minute I got up to he speed where the problem arose he knew the problem. It was the way the tires had been stored prior to my purchase. They were still good to go.

Thanks for reminding me of the song. Brought back memories of being told I wasn’t capable of doing something, several times by men. Those are fighting words to me. Proceeded to do what I set out to do to their surprise. Loved proving them wrong. Admired those who knew I could do it and gave me credit

    Personal Challenge Goals:

    1. More weight lifting
    2. Cut back on "sweets/baked goods"
    3. Finish my other quilt project that I started the beginning of the year
Egads - I married that man! He thinks lawn cutting and BBQing is man's work and the rest is the womans. He's so 1940s he wanted me to cut back work hours so he wouldn't have to help around the house! His mind says he makes the money, she takes care of the house. Some day's it's a wonder why he's still around. 🤪😂

Welcome tfrank! Glad you found us!

Your post brought back a lot of memories, Egads. (I first owned that song on vinyl & have it on my phone now.) When it was first released, my friends & I would drive around town with the top down, singing it at the top of our lungs. I taught my first-born to sing it when she was 4, just to drive her father crazy (not such a long trip for him!).

You are so right - women have come a long way but the fight is not yet over. There are a lot of people who continue to consider women inferior to men. Fortunately, that attitude has created a lot of strong, determined women. Combine that strength & determination with education (both academic & practical) & there is little we can't accomplish! Good for you in advocating for yourself (& your beloved car). Maybe that mechanic will think twice before underestimating the next woman who comes to him for a repair. (BTW, the fact that your DH enjoyed the situation - & your singing - says he's a keeper!)

Vamp, loved your quilt. (I'm a big Harry Potter fan!) Would love to see yours, too, ksuze. Quilting is a very cool skill to have!

Kath, keep showing people that they can't define you! (There's a lot of opportunity to do that in DC these days, isn't there?)

Welcome, tlfrank. My DD (a UT grad) & DSIL have lived in Austin for years & it's one of my favorite cities. (The food there may not be keto or paleo, but it's still pretty awesome!)

My cough & sore throat are almost gone (about time!!!) & I'm finally back in the gym. Lifted weights yesterday, crushed the elliptical today & felt great doing both. I'm sure my body is going to have something to say about all this activity but right now I'm just happy to be active again.

Tomorrow my DS is putting on a huge Halloween show with music, lights, flames, fog & even bubbles (seriously, bubbles?). Then I'll be joining my DGD(5) on her neighborhood candy quest. Life is good!

Egads - Yay, for you on the car repair coup!

Waaaay back in 1971, I was in middle school, so I didn't have a bra to burn.

Yes the salmon I buy at Costco is the Kirkland brand. Why? Do you know something I am missing about the brand?

My elbow is still hurting, so tomorrow I am having an MRI to rule out Osteomyelitis. I pray it isn't. I spend FAR TOO MUCH time with medical type people already!

I had my first appt. with a new physical therapist today. He has had cancer himself three times. It is very helpful to have someone who totally understands the ups & downs of cancer treatment and doesn't push to get you to "just do It!" The hope is that I'll be able to strengthen my hip, thigh & abdominal muscles to provide support for my spine so I don't slump or put stress on the Thoracic/Lumbar junction when I walk or sit.

I did have to hold my tongue though when he said that Weight Watchers was his personal fave for weight loss, and that it really didn't matter how one goes about losing weight, only that we needed to consume fewer calories than we burn. Geeez!

During this appt. Kirby was sitting on the floor beside me and when the PT pressed the button to raise the table I was laying on, the table made a sound that caused Kirby to seemingly become concerned about me and he was whining loudly there on the floor. I had to keep telling him I was okay, but he still had a perplexed and worried look on his little face. Once the table stopped Kirby quieted down and he sat back down. Once I was sitting up again, Kirby had his chin resting on my shoe. This was the first time he'd been in a PT office.

Vamp - Is your quilt paper-pieced or appliqued? It is beautiful! It feels so good to complete a project. Will you be hand quilting it or sending it to a long-armer?

My sewing machine is sitting on the table in my kitchen and the last time I used it was last November, plus I hadn't touched it for at least a year and a half before that. I wish I could stir up some gumption to finish even the started projects I have. I also would like to make a quilt for my sister so I could give it to her when we finally meet face to face.

Ksusan - Glad you enjoyed the conference and you made it back home. What flavor of scone did you indulge in? There is a recipe for Triple Chocolate Buttermilk Pound Cake listed on the Ibrance thread. Maybe Egads can tweek it so it would be Paleo friendly.

tlfrank - Welcome to the cave!

Kathindc - Hi there! How is the redecorating going?

Inna - So glad your rads is going well. I believe I mentioned before that the fatigue hit me on day 3 and I was all emotional and on the verge of tears. Are you experiencing any of this? Or was I just weird? The PT I saw today went through 7 weeks of radiation treatment.

Well I guess that is all for now. I'll check back later. Sleep well Ladies.

Well, just as I thought this year couldn't get any worse, i've Been proven wrong. My mother had an emergency surgery yesterday. I brought her to the ER totally confused and complaining of mild stomach pain on the right. It turned out to be an inflamed gallbladder with a nice bunch of stones inside. Spent 12 hours in the hospital almost falling off the chair with fatigue. On the bright side, she feels much better today. The surgery went very well and her pain is gone. The nurses have learned a few Russian words to communicate with her because she already forgot whatever English she knew due to dementia. Hopefully she'll be discharged tomorrow and i'll get my schedule back.

Vamp, love the quilt! My daughter and I are huge Harry Potter fans, although I am not happy about the borrowing from The Lord of the Rings.

Egads, I come from a completely different culture, where we were always told women and men are equal in everything. As a matter of fact, we were expected to do the same things men did, that's why there are so many female engineers from the former Soviet Union. In the USA they were unpleasantly surprised with the notion that it's not a female occupation. My mother, sister, cousin and aunt are mechanical, electrical and chemical engineers respectively. The major was especially popular among the Jews, because for some reason we were accepted there. Here are some impressive early Soviet era posters for your entertainment.

The words at the bottom are: Long Live the Equal women of the USSR

      image

This one is about the woman's role in the Bolshevik revolution. Inspirational, judging by the cut of the dress

      image

This is one of my favorites. It says: Factory woman, take a rifle! The NRA folks would love it.

      HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

Here is a picture from years ago of the twins carving pumpkins. Originally we thought it funny because it looked like Thing 2 was putting pumpkin stuff in his brothers pumpkin, I now think he is just leaning on it. Anyway I am sharing this photo because it looks like Thing 2 has another head attached to him and thought this to be a perfect Halloween photo.

      image

      And for your listening pleasure:

Junie - That's a good companion you have in Kirby, loves his mommy very much! Sending good thoughts your way for a clean scan today with that elbow and hopefully some down time from the doctors! Oh how I wish you lived closer so we could quilt/sew together! Harry Potter was paper pieced and my first attempt at it, not bad for a first time, but found out I should have shortened my stitch - oops. Hopefully it doesn't fall apart on her! I don't have the patience to hand quilt so I take them to a long arm quilter. Now the other one I started before Harry Potter I did applique and quilt as you go. I have three more blocks to finish and then I can piece it together - excited to see if this works out, if it does my next quilt will be done the same way!

Inna - So sorry about your mom, so thankful she is doing well now. All I can say is thank God 2018 is almost over!! What a terrible year you have had, big cyber HUGS to you.

Have a Spooky Day Cave Chicks!

BOO!!!!! Happy Halloween Cave Ghouls!!! ;)

Well ain't we abuzz this a.m.!!! All your wonderful posts are going down nicely with my collagen laden Ksuze coffee. As usual, I'm not ready for the door-to-door goblins this evening, so I have shopping on my agenda……don't want my front lawn toilet papered or my windows soaped….although they could use a good scrub :))))) Back in the day I was one of those parents that went trick or treatin' in full regalia…..usually quite elaborate…..made for lots o' fun with the kiddo, planning and making our costumes. One year I went as a tree. Teased my hair into a brillo pad and stuck crunched up dried leaves throughout. I'm still picking out the bits 12 years later :))) I miss those days and will be glad to resume dressing up when I have grandchildren.

VampriellaExcellent goals!!! Great that I have a partner in the Personal Goal Challenge! Figures, it starts today….halloween…candy….ugggggg :)))))) Your hubby, well, you might want to quote Forbes Magazine's article on just how much a stay-at-home mom should be paid…..$115,000.00/yr with overtime. Yeah. That is a lot of dough!!! Check out the link: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jennagoudreau/2011/05/02/why-stay-at-home-moms-should-earn-a-115000-salary/ Omg your two goblins are adorable!! It really does look like a second head LOL!! I'd frame that shot…such a great halloween pic AND the look on their faces pretty much sums up how kids know exactly how to live. Those smiles….LOVE IT! Thanks for sharing! I'll be doing the Monster Mash and Thriller dance all over the kitchen today while I finish up on my obsessive spice collection organization :)))

JKL – I so envy your 'driving around town, top down, singing loudly' good times.....there is no comparison to that genre of music!! I think teaching your DD the words to I Am Woman at age 4 is something we all should do for our female children….keep the movement going n' all! Get it in their heads early! Wow, your DS is pulling out all the stops!! I LOL'd at the bubbles…put me in mind of a segment from 'The Osbournes'. Sharon and Ozzie were looking over a stage set up….Sharon as usual had the décor and special effects down to a fine art. Except for the bubbles….she had two huge bubble machines on either side of the stage. Ozzie looked at her and said "Sharon, I'm supposed to be the Prince of Fucking Darkness and you have bubbles?!?!?!??!" I cracked up! ('scuse the language, necessary in this case). So glad to see you're feeling better darlin….and that was quite the post recovery workout, you are a Cave Chick through and through!! Life is indeed good…..enjoy the heck out of that lil' hootie owl you'll be partying with tonight and please post all the gory details ;)))

JunieBee – So sorry about the elbow pain, geeze if it's not one thing its another eh? Keep us posted on the MRI, crossing fingers it's all good! That is very cool that your doc is a survivor, I imagine his level of care and understanding tops the norm. As for 'it doesn't matter what you eat, just lose weight' arrrrrrrrggggg that drives me crazy. I've had docs say that to me too and it astounds me. It DOES matter (as we all know), matters very much!!! Calorie restricting 'diets' have an astronomical failure rate, not to mention what's touted as 'good for you'.I could go on for days about this but I type too much as is, so it'll be a post one day. Costco recently switched fisheries from Chile to Norway….which is a GREAT thing….colder the water the lower the mercury levels…so you're all good. I buy the same brand when I can't find wild caught (which is more often than not). Kirby is too sweet and loving for words!! When you said he put his foot on your shoe I melted!! What a darling lil' fellow he is! I'm so glad you two have each other….and hope he has a costume all ready for Halloween :))). Your pumpkin meme is hysterical!!! The look on that dogs face in the last shot.....LOL!!!As for your projects, why not join in the Cave Chick Personal Goal challenge with one of them? Also, I'll be posting exercises later today that might be helpful in strengthening your core….which your doc is right about….strong cores = less back, leg and everything pain. Hope they are helpful!! Take care of that elbow sweetie!!

Inna (godda davida) – I'm SO sorry to read about your Mum, and VERY glad all is well. I'm crossing fingers and toes that this is the last hit you'll have to endure. I remember calling 2013 my year of hell. Always hits exactly when you don't need it. Get some well deserved rest and give your Mum gentle обнимаю from all of us! LOVE your post!! My father was a Russian history major and my parents made trips to your homeland from about 1975 right up until this year (Mum continued trips after Dad passed). They were fascinated by the history and the people….one of their fav places to visit. My mother would come back from trips saying "omg, am I going to miss that black bread!!" Mum would also marvel at the women of your country, the level of education and equality amazed her during the 'bra burning western years'. Russia got it right placing women were they should be in the grand scheme of life…..they didn't waste brilliant minds by putting them in front of a stove or mop. Geeze, when the Bolshevik revolution happened, women still couldn't vote here!! For all the political mudslinging the western world has historically done, we should have taken a cue from your homeland and woke up to the amazing resource women are and always will be. Also LOVE the posters……they make me want to grab a push up bra, wear a low cut dress, grab a gun and go hunting for a male chauvanist!! :)))))))

Holy cow.....long one eh? :) Meh. I'm sure you're all used to it. Ok, so the answer to my Cave Chick trivia question:

What was Wilma Flinstones mother's name? Answer: Pearl Slaghoople

      image

New Cave Chick Trivia Question: What was the average life expectancy of Paleo man? (no googling!!)

Hope your day is scary.....in a good way!! Happy Halloween!!

Hi everyone. I have been never ending sick and whenever I am sick I think about what Paleo foods would be comfort/sick foods. Yes I ate bananas and watermelon and a little broth, but I also ate quite a few non Paleo crackers. Cottage cheese and pears kept me alive. And I wish Paleo Mama would make me some majic tea. Alas I have not found one.

      Food question:

Trying to change my diet as it's getting harder to afford meat as prices rise so I'm trying to find proteins elsewhere that doesn't make me cringe when I think of it (hello tofu) just veggies doesn't keep me full long enough and I find myself grazing at whatever I can find.

I bought quinoa today and am wondering   For those who have had experience with it would a small amount with my regular veggies I eat might help keep me full longer? I tried rice but I always feel really icky after I eat it.

I'm getting desperate here. It's getting hard to find affordable proteins other then eggs and even those I have to eat sparingly.

      Thanks

Hi Junie, hope it isn’t osteomyelitis. Keep us posted. Redecorating is going slowly which is fine by me as this will probably be the last time I do anything of this size. Just when I think I’ve found what I want something else catches my eye. Argh!

Glad for the core strengthening videos. Will definitely do these. Will help me add on to what I learned in PT this summer. It sure helped with my lower back

      Morning Peeps!!

So it's the day after the night before…..and what a night it was! My Cavecub called when I was prepping a rushed din-din and while getting ready for the onslaught of pirates, dinosaurs and Tinkerbells that were about to ring my doorbell. I just KNEW by the first words out of his mouth that something was wrong. "Mummmm, I'm coming home to get some paper towel".

Besides his weird statement, it was his tone that triggered my maternal instincts. He sounded 5 years old again. Long story short, something kinda' heavy fell from a 5 ft. distance while he was working, knocked him to the ground and left a horrific pair of deep cuts on his head. I almost fainted when I got a peek….I saw skull bone. Sooooooo, one 4 hour visit to the ER, 3 staples to the noggin, and a night full of wake up nudges because of concussion, has left both of us pooped!

He woke up an hour ago….the larger cut was still oozing blood and looked fleshy *shudder*. Almost fainted again…it's seriously the stuff of horror flicks! Off he went on his own to the ER this time around…..apparently 2 of the staples are MIA.Poor Cavecub probably has another 4 hour wait to have it fixed. Thankfully he suffered no serious injury to his brain or spine. This has to be the scariest Halloween I've encountered to date.....and probably the best costume he's ever worn :)))

When your cub gets hurt, terror strikes the heart and soul of a gal. Whew. Breathe. ;)

TwoH – Awwwwww!! I'm sorry you've been sick! Tis the season to be flu-y. It caught up to me mildly 2 weeks ago and I'm still dragging my derrier around. Feel better soon sweetie….plenty of rest, and keep us posted when you can!! Hugs!

Kathindc – Glad you liked the vids……and have to agree, it's amazing what a little strength training can do for a sore back!I LOL'd at your post….I'm SO guilty of the same….once I finish up, I see something else and my mind goes back to the drawing board…..but my will doesn't LOL…exhausting! Where you redecorating a large area?

Vampriella – The 40 sumo squats more than make up for yesterday! Sheesh, you're a squatting machine :)))) (that sounds gross, sorry LOL!). Ah yes, they grow WAY too fast…and WAY too mouthy :)) Last night I got a wee 'revisit' to those days, I miss those days! Scrapbook is a great way to 'play'….and YES you do need to have more 'me' time…well deserved! Did your Cavecubs manage to fufill their candy dreams last night? What were their costumes?

Jade – Hiya darlin! How's the recovery going? Hopefully you're healing up nicely! No wonder rice made you feel yucky…..it causes inflammation city on your GI. Ok, quinoa….while technically not a grain, it is big time carbs. HOWEVER, it is a powerhouse of nutrition & protein, and a great choice if you're going to eat a non-compliant food. Mixing with veggies is the perfect way to eat quinoa…the veg (besides being good for ya') contain antioxidants that help to offset the phytic acid (inflammatory) content. I'd recommend going slow and building if you have tummy issues. Gauge your reaction and go from there. It's an excellent (and cheap) way to incorporate protein. Lentils are also a fantastic method….just make sure to start with very small quantities and include veg. I love lentils, but they don't love my colon so I avoid them like the plague (also I'm Primal/Paleo and it's a no-no for me). If I was going to cheat it would be with lentils. With your veg…..try steaming and then quick sauté in pork fat….you can buy hunks of it CHEAP. Cut off a 1-2 piece, rough chop, render it (fry until it is no longer white, or until crisp) and toss in the steamed veg for a few minutes. It's not only delish, the fat will keep you full longer. Fat is great for fullness along with protein….so don't skimp on healthy fats. That said don't load up completely on carbs with the fat….or you'll get fat ;) .8 grams of protein per lb of body weight is a good daily limit. Another economical way to get more protein is through whey powder (BulkBarn, don't have to buy the big honkin' jug, get the plain, no sugar type), you can make smoothies with it…veg or fruit smoothies. A couple of tablespoons is all that's needed, forget the huge scoop the manufacturer suggests…..makes me feel very full. Hope this helps! Keep us posted!

Hope everyone has a splendiferous day.....hopefully back later with Thursday's usual....energy lagging because of the 'all nighter' ;))

Inna (godda davida) & Ksuze - Thank you!! He's fine......got through fast, 3 (for a total of 4) more staples all holding....lets just hope he doesn't have to go through airport security any time soon! :))) Poor kid....feel for him. All good though! Hugs!!

      So here it is...…..

TUTORIAL THURSDAY – Don't take the brown acid or vitamin man!!!

Wise words from the announcer at Woodstock so many moons back…."Don't take the brown acid man!!!" :)))))). There has been a lot of talk about supplements in our community lately and throughout BCO. We see, hear and read about supplements….and how they SHOULD be swallowed every day. Bullpuckies!!! We've grown into a society of preventative pill poppers. Supplements are some of the most over used OTC drugs period. I'm not saying that they don't have their place…..some are very necessary for many different health issues. If you're fit, sassy, n' healthy however, why take them? Why self medicate? Why not get them from a wide variety of foods….the BEST way to supplement. Why not get a blood test done before running to the pharmacy in search of a 'cure'?

Here is my bare bones take on what just about anyone can take safely and effectively….anything else requires a medical consult IMHO…..

      ANTIOXIDANT BOOSTER

Don't let the antioxidant craze fool you…..all those ads for 'CONTAINS ANTIOXIDANTS' are shoved in our faces daily and makes for huge profits. Our brilliantly engineered bodies have 3 main 'built in systems' that take care of oxidants. (catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione). Where they fall short is when we are under stress (mental, physical). When you're stressed, so are those systems (along with every other system in your bod). In times of physical or mental stress a multivitamin with an antioxidant booster can be a wise temporary choice. The first line should be from food intake (leafy greens/berries), but in times of stress you may find that….

"Unfortunately, many of our historically healthy sources of dietary antioxidants have gone extinct or have been rendered impotent by today's aggressive factory farming techniques."

So buy local, organic, GMO free whenever possible, and on an ongoing basis. Supplement when needed.

      PROBIOTICS

Cave chicks ate dirt….all the time! Back in the paleo day hand washing wasn't a priority. The result was a daily consumption of soil based organisms (good bacteria and yeast) that take up squatters rights in the intestines….gut flora….extremely important stuff. Any bad bacteria a cave chick got in the mix usually had a 'hit' put out on it by the good bacteria….yeah, the body is amazing! We wash and sanitize everything today, so we're missing out on some of nature's best healthy gut producing ingredients. My mother had a saying "you have to eat a bushel of dirt before you die". Perhaps somewhere in those words there were wise food choices along with the 'ya' gotta take your lumps in life' thing. Now I'm not suggesting you dine on dirt, but you can take probiotic capsules…again under times of stress or illness. Regular consumption really only needs to happen when GI issues are present…but even then it doesn't have to be every day if you're eating a healthy diet. Once good flora is introduced it tends to reproduce at rabbit rates. I had/have ulcerative colitis….total remission since going paleo. I supplement a probiotic on the rare needed occasion. Once again, food is the first choice…specifically fermented foods…think sauerkraut, yogurt if dairy isn't an issue, Kombucha (paleo soda), Kimchi (YUM!).Keep wheat/grain/legumes out of the diet….they tear at your guts and leave behind a nasty trail of inflammation…..goes for your joints too.

      VITAMIN D3

This one is a no brainer. There is a def correlation between low vitamin d levels and cancer. We practically live indoors compared to paleo peeps. D comes naturally from the sun, so it's not surprising that many lack this essential vitamin. The farther your cave is situated from the equator, the more a good vitamin D supplement is needed. Best in gel caps, but if you take a solid pill make sure to include a healthy fat along with it…..helps the vitamin d adsorb better. Get outside! Sunscreen your lovely face by all means, but let the rest of your skin soak up some rays for at least 10 minutes before lathering on the Coppertone.

      MAGNESIUM

48% of folks are mag deficient. See my post on page 35 for all the details. I highly recommend if you're showing the deficiency symptoms…..and make mag rich foods your first choice.

      COLLAGEN

Another no brainer, and full details on page 39 of this thread. Same goes….foods first, supplement when needed. Those on hormone blockers would benefit from a tablespoon of powder daily….your va-jay jay will thank you :)))))Take with Vitamin C (or eat a Clementine)…..helps adsorption!

"Most modern people eat only the muscle meat, and this is significant. Muscle meat has a totally different amino acid profile than collagen. Meat is rich in methionine. Collagen is rich in glycine. Methionine metabolism requires and depletes glycine."

So if you're not eating the caps off your chicken bones, making and slurping down bone broth (stock) and gelatin, and only eating muscle meat, you can see why a collagen supplement is a wise choice.

      IMPORTANT LAST THOUGHTS

      • Get blood work done if you suspect deficiency BEFORE popping pills. Self medicating can be dangerous…and foolish to assume that the latest 'health craze' is something your body even needs!
      • Advise your healthcare team of all supplements you are taking….get the stamp of approval before breaking the seal on a bottle o' health.
      • FOOD, can't say it enough, find vitamin & mineral rich foods and use this as your front line in health defence. Supplement as needed, and only constantly if there is a confirmed issue/deficiency.

OMG, Egads, scary cavedude injury! Hope he's feeling better & that YOU'VE recovered. My DD slammed into a radiator headfirst when was small &, like you, I nearly passed out when I saw bone. I still remember waking her up all through the night to monitor her condition. She was fine but still sports a Harry Potterish scar on her forehead to remind me of that frightening evening. It's a wonder any of us survive our kid's childhoods with everything they put us through!

Thanks for the latest tutorial. I've been trying to limit meds (including supplements) when I can but continue to take D3 & my now-beloved magnesium (sleep is much easier these days). I'll be seeing my PCP for my yearly check-up this month; it will be interesting to see what my numbers are now. (I'm particularly interested in seeing my calcium levels since I have almost totally cut out dairy.)

Last night was such fun; my little owl kept saying "those nice people gave me candy!" as we left each house. Gotta love the innocence of a 5 year old!

I'm off to the gym to try a new (for me anyway) water aerobics class. Hopefully it will work out some of the aches that my return to the weight room has created! FYI, I have been using both hip adduction & abduction machines for years. Is it weird that I can lift more weight on one than the other? (Just curious.)

JKL, that is beyond cute!! Your lil' owl is such a sweetie pie, and your evening must have been a joy!! Yes the innocence *sigh*, all I ever say is "the nasty tax man stole half of my money!!" :))))) Bless her lil'' heart! My son is fine, thank you for asking! His scalp is back together again, whew!! Reading your story made me cringe....poor DD!! I think I'll recover by the time it heals....as long as I don't get flashbacks ugggggg.

The calcium, well, in your shoes I'd def be interested. My gut tells me that if I make the switch over to an AL I would take a daily dose as a preventative to bone loss. One of those 'certain issues require' that I wrote about earlier. Keep us posted on your blood work!

Nice job in the gym Ms. Lifer.....made my heart happy to see a fellow hip add and ab machine user. Methinks you're not alone.....I lift 30-40 lbs less on the hip add machine compared to ab. Makes perfect sense....the adduction machine primarily uses the longus & magnus adductor muscles, where the ab machine gets the full bore of all the glutes (min. med and maxiums) along with a portion of your obliques and lat muscles (and a few more I can't spell :) So it's not an equally weighted match. I once tried to do the same weight on both machines...emphasis on ONCE....pain...wow! Meh, we lift n' learn :))))

Can't wait to hear about the water aerobics....sounds peachy!! I'm so jealous....no pool in my gym :(

      Egads007

Hi, sorry about your boy. Hopefully he's on his way to healing well.

As for recovery things were going ok until a couple days ago when pain started in the side of the left frankenboob and today there is marked difference in size again so  some serious swelling is going on.visiting nurse is concerned so I'm waiting for a call back from the PS to see what I should do. looks like there's a setback.i suspect I am probably gonna end up at the hospital sometime today or tommorow. Took an Advil and am using an ice pack right now to see if it helps. The difference is very obvious again I think I'm back to the size I was when I came out of surgery. It's noticeable with the surgical bra the left side is popping out and the right is totally covered.

I can't have lentils for same reason, upsets everything in my body. I was only planning a small amount because quinoa is expensive.im just trying to find something to fill in the protein part that meat can no longer fill due to prices going up and helps me feel fuller longer.

I also mixed up the chocolate and vanilla flavoured hemp yeah protein powder cause both taste like dirt along with some boost protein powder and use a couple of tsp of that along with some cut up or a rinsed off fruit cup in yogurt. That's actually what I'm having for lunch

I only use water to cook no oils or fats which is why most of my chicken is poached instead of fried. I rarely eat red meats also (just as expensive as chicken around here and doesn't sit well in my stomach) with the rising prices all around here for all it's getting harder to eat "healthy" in any way shape or form :/

OMG Egads - your poor cavecub and the headache he must have, so glad that the brain and spine were all ok! He'll have one wicked cool scar now that will attract all the ladies. ;)

Great Tutorial today. I am hoping that all the stuff my Naturalpath has me on is for a needed reason! I do plan to stop the magnesium and Curcummatrix for now, it's getting to expensive to be all these vitamins!

So ladies need some ideas, I am thinking it's time for me to 1. Find myself and 2. Find a new line of work. The pain is too much and after a day of work, I struggle to get up off the chair. Problem is I don't know what I can do at my age and I don't really know who I am anymore.

Another question - I know I can make lasagna with zucchini, but is there anything else that is more noodle like?
