A Grosbeak

This is a female grosbeak.
-
I have never seen a grosbeak before - what a beautiful bird! And what a beautiful quote. Thank you!
-
Let's see if I can find a picture of a towhee - not the best picture but these are curious birds. Only eats off the ground when others drop things from the feeder.
-
Love the nuthatches. We have rose breasted grossbeaks that migrate through but I have never seen one like that. Very pretty.
We only have ruby throated hummingbirds here like yours GM
Lisa, do you know what kind your little king of hill hummer is? So pretty.
I got a new lens I am anxious to try out but haven't had time this week. I bought it especially for birds so we'll see how it does.

This hummer was actually in a battle for the feeder. It spread it wings I am guessing to intimidate the challenger. I was lucky enough to catch her right when she did that.
-
I think I saw them

Loving the photos on here! Gma I am always noticing that your camera does beautiful background bokeh
We do not have grosbreaks or humming birds in Ireland so getting an education here!
this is our people-friendliest crow, the jackdaw. You always know a jackdaw by the pale green eyes.

Had the pleasure of hand feeding these beauties

Hi! Just found this bird watching thread. All of your bird pics are great! As you all do, I love birds and have since childhood.
This winter I’m going to keep a hummingbird feeder going for our full time hummer population here. Do I need to warm the hummer nectar? Is it ok for them at outdoor temps? Of course, I would never let the nectar freeze, would bring the feeder in at night, then replace early morning. Our general winter temps are a high of 45-55 degrees, lows 38-45.
I’m thinking about purchasing a bird shelter. Has anyone used a bird shelter in their yard? Do birds really hang out in them? I have a thick shrub that birds have been sheltering in for years. I’m thinking about placing a bird shelter near the shrub. The shelter would be warmer and drier. Any thoughts?
I’m living in the Pacific Northwest and we don’t normally experience severe low temps and snow, but the weather is frequently rainy and cold during the winter.
Thanks

Sherrmue, Welcome. All bird lovers welcome here. DS and SIL live in Hood River and they have the nectar outside unless it's freezing. I think they bring it inside to thaw during the day in freezing weather, then keep it inside overnight. I don't know anyone who has used a shelter. Perhaps Audubon would have a recommendation for your area. We had a corkscrew filbert tree near our bird feeder and the little birds hid in that. It died last year, but we've left it up because the branches have some cover. We're thinking of trying an evergreen clematis to grow up in the branches.

This hawk flew in yesterday and perched above my bird feeder. Needless to say there were NO birds in sight. This hawk was the largest I have ever seen up close.
MJS, where was your photo taken? What a treat. I have never seen a flamingo in person.
I didn't realize hummingbirds would stay around in winter in the Northwest. Our hummers are long gone at this point. I am always sad to see them disappear. Good luck Sherrmue.
Enjoying everyone's photos.

Nancy - we were at the Sarasota Jungle Garden Wildlife Sanctuary. So many beautiful birds! It was a bucket list of mine to be up close and personal with flamingos. We attempted to go to Renaissance Beach in Aruba earlier this year, while on a cruise, for a full day on the beach with the flamingos, but all the passes were sold out at 8am. My girlfriend told us about this experience in FL and was even kind enough to get us tickets for my birthday so I could check that off the list.
-
MJS, I am glad you got to check off a bucket list adventure. I have been to Sarasota while in college but I was at a music camp at the time so really didn't get to do much else. Your experience I am sure was awesome.

Wow. Beautiful markings. Do you know what they're called?
We have one fat hummingbird that we've nicknamed Chub. I have no idea why he's different. Most of them are very slender and delicate. He looks like he's puffed up his feathers, but I suspect it's not just feathers. He may be a different breed from our usual Anna's.

Pretty goldfinch!

A few photos from Mindo and Galapagos:

Wren:
The green ones in the first photo are siskins
The red headed birds in the second photo are goldfinches. They are my absolute favourite, They flutter down, exactly like leaves. A flock landing (from out of a tree) looks like a drift of falling leaves.
Love the sound of your Chub!
