I just started reading this thread. I guess I missed it while I was away. Are we sending these to Vickie? Is it too late to get on board, I didn't read all the posts yet.

Sheri, it is never to late to start. You can send the squares to Vickie, or myself.

Michelle, I think Vickie did get an annon donation to buy yarn....we'll check with her.

    Hi Michelle,
I to am very challenged! I did buy a knifty knitter and haven't attempted a square yet. They say it's easy! (but 'they' have never met the likes of me!) I've also asked about sending a donation. Vickie, if you did send out something to buy yarn, I missed it. Please repost. But hey, I'm still gonna give this thing a try!
    Hugs,

another technical question. How do you finish off the rectangle when it'd done. One pamphlet said to take a big needle and stitch the yarn along the last row of crochet stitches. Is that what you do?

Susan...yes...take your end and weave it into your last row and then cut it off...it will keep it from unraveling.

Hi Shel...I did get an anon $10.00 donation for yarn...went to Michaels on Saturday and bought 10 skeins as the really fancy yarns were on sale at $1.00 each!! Any yarn will do as long as it isn't wool. You can send yarn to me or Madison or whoever else could use it. I personally have plenty of yarn so if anyone else needs yarn I can suggest they pm you...and thank you!

Denise and Sheri...jump right in and join the fun!!

Okay, advice on Knifty Knitter please. My hat turned out fine, However.......my 7" square is only 5". I'm using the rectangle loom and can't go any larger. I know there is a way to use the circle loom but can't figure it out. It was 7" when I started...go figure. If I use the round loom how do I measure for flat knitting? Help, Help, Help.

Denise, unfortunately it is often trial and error. A thicker or heavier yarn on the same setup would result in a wider square. Skinny yarn will result in a narrower width. I ripped up my first square twice trying to get the width right, guessed and cast on 35 stitches, reduced to 29 stitches, still too wide, I finally ended up with 26 stitches for my heavy-weight yarn. Trial and error is normal so don't fret it. Just go a few inches and measure and if it's not gonna work, go back and make changes.

I don't know the nifty knitter, but from what Deb said, apparently you put on some stitches but don't cover the entire circle. When you reach the end of the row, stop and go in reverse back the way you came. When you made the hat, you probably just went around and around the circle always in the same direction.
I'm on rectangle #3 and about out of this red yarn, so next one will probably be "baby yellow". -- Donna "freezin her butt off" in VA

    HI Ladies!
Well, I had lunch with Jeannie (Silvergirl) today. She met me at work and brought along a bag of absolutely beautiful squares for our afghan! I can't wait to get started!
Here is a picture of Jeannie and me in my office at work...I will try to post pictures of her squares later...they are so very pretty!

Hi Vickie, I'm fine, got 6 squares done now (knitted in basic colors). Do you want beige/cream ones? That will be the yarn I have left after I get through this blue I am working on now. Otherwise I will need to think about buying some yarn. Beige and pastels might be pretty. -- Donna in VA

Hi Donna...sorry it took me so long to answer you. You can make the squares any color you want. It is going to be the "afghan of many colors"...filled with love! I have several colors now and it's going to be simply beautiful. I am currently working on crocheting borders around the squares I have collected and hoping to get some more so I can get one finished. Not sure how many I have...I'll do a count tomorrow and let everyone know. If anyone needs my address just pm me and I'll send it too you...Madison has also offered to put them together so you can pm her too.
    Love ya ladies

Vickie, I am shooting for 13 squares by Monday (1/4 of an afghan) so you can PM me your address too. I think I have quite a bit of beige/cream around. There is a Michael's within 3 miles of my house so I will go get more yarn if needed. I am pleased to use up the little balls I had from other projects and "inherited" yarns. (1 square requires about a tangerine-sized ball of worsted.) I am vowing to only buy 1 skein at a time though.

By the way www.joann.com also has yarn and they put on free shipping every once in a while, so check their web site every week if you're in the yarn market. That is where I got myself in trouble last time. Before I started chemo, I ordered a large box full of yarn and still have not used that up. I loved Caron Rainbow Dreams and bought 1 of every color. They make gorgeous shawl/wraps. -- Donna

Vickie, if you get overwhelmed, let me know. I can also add my address to the mix.

How many squares are we doing? How many across? How many down?

Are we using black yard to sew them together?

Oh my, too many questions....You probably have had way too many jello shots to be able to answer.

I think I have had too many to ask questions.

    Hi Ladies,
Vickie, did you get the pictures of the "squares" I emailed you? Don't mean to bug you, just wondered if they are okay! I should have a batch ready in a couple of days so I'll take your address now!

Hi Denise...I just got your email open to see your squares and they are not only perfect they are so very pretty!!! Nice job.
Hi Madison...sittin here in my toga with Dopey by my side handing me Xanex uhhh I mean yarn! Each afghan has 63 squares, 9 squares down, 7 across. I am crocheting a black border around each square and then sewing them together. I will try to post some pictures of my progress sometime this weekend. Feel free to add your address to the mix...don't have quite enough for a full afghan yet but will by tomorrow if I make a few more squares tonight. I have been stalling a bit to get squares from several girls so that we all have a square in an afghan.
Donna...pm'ing you my address and thanks!
    Hugs all

Always hope..I am not using a pattern...just with that yarn I mentioned above..and the No7 needles, I cast on 30 stitches, which with my knitting is 7 inches..I just knit, did not pearl..it makes it keep its form better..Then after 9 inches I cast off. It is very simple and I am sure anyone could teach you..
Lots of knitting stores will help you get started..
I started knitting almost fifty years ago..but lately I haven't been doing much..
    This is a fun project..
