    Hi Ladies,

I've been offline for awhile, lots going on, and I'm super exhausted. But I'm starting chemo on Monday May 15th, they installed my port last week, and it's all getting too real now, so I'm back here to touch bases with you all.

I was doing fairly okay, but since I got this port, and it's inconveniently located in the inside upper arm where it is totally in the way, rubbing on my boob and in pain all the time. I hate it, and may make them move it if it continues to bother me so much.

Gee, I sure sound grumpy at the moment. Yes, I guess I am. And I'm so tired. But I have to get to the grocery store to get stocked up before Monday. I was just reading some posts in the May 2017 chemo thread, and someone there posted a bunch of things she did to get ready. I had thought I was doing okay in the preparation department, but now I realize there's so much more to do. Oh well, I guess I just won't be the best-prepared cancer patient to ever sit in the chemo chair! And the tears, the tears have been hovering just beneath the surface, with the feelings of fear and thoughts that this just isn't fair and all the other stuff you all know too well.

Look forward to chatting more later. Oh God that sounded weird. Must get going. TTY'all later.

NCBeachGirl: I'm surprised your port is in your arm. I thought they were put in the same location as mine -- above the breast just under the collar bone.

Good luck on Monday. Your first chemo treatment may take longer than the subsequent ones. Mine took almost 7 hours (subsequent ones only took 3 1/2 hours). One reason for my longer treatment was they gave me double doses of Perjeta & Herceptin and a slower IV drip in case I had a bad reaction. Everything went smoothly for me so subsequent treatments were faster.

It is an emotional experience. I cried for weeks after my dx.

In your pocket as well NCBeachGirl! I noticed a few ladies having chemo when I had chemo had ports on the inside of their upper arms and also some on their forearms. Mine is right on top of my right TE and it's still a pain in the butt even after 10 months. I have to have mine flushed every 4 weeks now that I'm done with chemo. I went out and bought all kinds of stuff for my chemo bag for treatments and I never used any of it. It all sits under my bathroom sink. Hopefully you won't need it either but I was glad I had it if I did need it. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. I had a horrible metal taste in my mouth when they'd flush with saline so I made sure I had lifesavers to suck on or dill pickles to snack on while they did the saline flushes. Best of luck! You can do this!

NCBeachGirl--- I'm with you! I hope you stocked up--better to have more than not enough! I hope it goes well and that you can come home and get some good rest. I know it 's hard to get that good rest before---but more assuredly when you come home and are mentally less stressed you can have that healing deep sleep....

    I'll be thinking of you Monday. . . .

Lori-- Love the ducks! Tell the mom duck Happy Mother's Day!

    Hi Molly!

And to all of you: HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY from me and Pantaloon!

WenchLori, the BS put my port in my upper arm because I'd already had two hospital surgeries in the past month (a real nuisance) and she could install an arm port in her office with local anesthesia and I wouldn't need someone to drive me. She said lots of women prefer to have the port scar hidden, rather than prominent. It sounded logical at the time, and I really didn't feel like the hassle of another hospital surgery, and I figured it would be nice that a port wouldn't be bothered by my seat belt, so I said OK, put it in my arm. Well, immediately I regretted it!!! It's in a fat part of my inner upper arm that rubs against my "side-boob" all the time, and it totally gets in the way all the time, like when I'm at the drive-up teller and have my arm resting on the car door. Ugh, I totally hate the thing! I don't know how long it will be before I rip it out on my own (just kidding) and insist on a chest port. But i'll do my best to give it a chance.

As for a chemo bag, I haven't put one together, partly (okay, mainly) because of money issues. And of course, I have no idea what I'll need. I live with my mom, who was a nurse by profession, and we live a stone's throw from several drug stores and grocery stores, so we're just gonna wait and see what I need. Fortunately, mom is still active and capable at 80, and is ready to do those middle-of-the-night runs for immodium and crackers.

And are you serious? Dill pickles during saline (heparin?) flushes? EWWW. And my cocktail has several chemicals with high probability of mouth sores...UGH... probably won't be eating many pickles in my future!

Molly50 thanks for having my back. And I lived in southern CA for 20 years...miss the hell out of it! I'd say where, but I moved around a lot. Last 2 yrs were in Running Springs, 6,300 ft elevation between Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear. THE perfect climate for me! I just loved the forest and mountains. And yes I was there in 2003 for the horrible wildfires. Had to evacuate with my two great danes and a very pissed-off cat and spent two weeks with two other adult (people) and their two great danes in a small, two-bedroom, un-air-conditioned apartment. OMG, what a terrible experience it was to live thru those fires! They came within a mile of my house. Talk about HUGE stress, watching the 24/7 news coverage, helplessly sitting in my friends' apartment, watching my mountain burn. Thankfully, I had left CA before the next fires hit that area. I don't think i could have taken the stress a second time. But, haha (to anyone else reading this) I really do miss CA!

And hi again, Trill...thanks for your support. Will keep you all posted. and hopefully I'll get to go through the older messages and look at the pix of the wildlife that visits folks here. We don't have much wildlife to speak of here-- two rabid dogs (well, they THINK they're ferocious) and an outdoor cat keep pretty much everything at bay.

TTY'all later (that's my tongue-in-cheek pseudo-southern signature line, as I'm not a NC native, but can claim to be a southerner by birth).

A friendly hello from the San Bernardino Mountains, NCBeachGirl! Sorry about your port problems but isn't this site great for support?

My DH and I spent the 2003 evacuation on cots in the gym of Sultana HS in Hesperia. We had just moved to Lake Arrowhead from NJ and knew no one to take us in!

Best of luck to you in this unasked-for adventure!

Tappermom OMG Lake Arrowhead! Wow. Small world. Were you in one of those areas that got hit hard by the fires? Man, it was unbelievably scary to go through that! I just about lost it. Closest i ever came to suicide. Turns out I'd gotten a bad sinus infection from all the crap in the air and I'd never had one before, so I wasn't aware I was sick. The day I nearly lost it, my friend figured out I was sick and insisted I go to her doctor the very next day. Good thing she did. And one of my danes was so stressed out that he couldn't keep food down and lost a whole bunch of weight when he should have been gaining (he wasn't even a year old). It was hell! I'll bet life in a HS was no picnic either.

And yes, it's pretty amazing the level of support on this site!

NCBeachGirl - the 2007 fire came closer to us than the one in 2003. But I had friends who lost homes in both - devastating! I talked a bit ago on one of the threads here about the guilt I felt after we got home in 2003; we were so grateful to have escaped but felt terrible about those who did not.

In 2003 we had to drop our two cats off at the shelter set up at the county fairgrounds (no pets allowed at the shelter where we stayed). They were pretty angry with us when we picked them up as they had to spend the week in the carriers we took them in.

I go for my radiation mapping tomorrow. Excited would be the wrong way to describe my feelings but I will be glad to get this part of the unasked-for adventure on its way. The sooner I start, the sooner it will be over!

My appointment with my MO went great today! I get to have this pain in the butt port taken out ASAP! I'll be on Arimidex instead of Tamoxifen if I can tolerate it. We'll see. I won't see him again for 3 months and another PET scan done at that time. He was thrilled to hear that I'm playing in the dirt and doing things I enjoy again.

I've got several young male raccoons hanging around these days. I'm getting them primed to take marshmallows from my hand. So far I've got 3 that will and one of them likes to get close to coming in the house. The mama raccoons should be bringing their babies over soon. I love babies!!

    Gggrrrr I can't download my pictures :-

Lori, so glad your appt. went well--yay!! I'm sure that getting that port out will be FANTASTIC! You've been a great patient and it's paying off! And I know your critters have also helped you heal....bless them..

But hey--when are you gonna treat those raccoon guys to 'smores??? THAT will rock their socks off!

Wait--do raccoons wear socks? Hmmmm...will have to ask Miss Pantaloon about that. She's quite up on latest fashions in the critter world--gets a digital copy of Dogue (it's biased towards canines...) the animal kingdom version of Vogue. So she should know what raccoons are donning these days besides their very voluminous furs.

GOOD GIRL--HOPE THE REST OF YOUR WEEK'S FANTASTIC!

Lori - Hi there. Have been very busy w/work, so not able to "write" in very often on the discussion threads. Glad to hear you will be able to get rid of the port. Guess we'll be "seeing you" on the Arimidex threads. Have been on it since 4/4 with very little of the side effects that I was fearing. No hot flashes, no insomnia, no weight gain - a little bit of joint pain, especially if overdo things. Hoping the best for you, as well. Gentle hugs.

Thank you, I'm hoping it goes easy on me too. MO thinks I'll do ok since I've been doing so good with all of my other treatments 🤞

Trill, s'mores? Hmmmm I wonder if chocolate will do any harm to the critters? Most of the raccoons that hang out here do have black socks on! I never noticed that before lol

I noticed there were egg shell remnants on the front porch. I heard very faint chirping coming from the nest above the door. I'll wait a little longer beer before getting my step stool and taking a peek to see how many babies there are. The nest that a house wren built on the front of my trailer has 4 babies in it. Yay!

Gentle healing hugs to everyone weather you need one or not 😜😜😜

I saw mama doe yesterday at the salt block. Her belly just keeps getting bigger and bigger, poor mama had to stand splay footed just to be able to stand!

Very late, very tired, giving y'all the very short version:

But it will pass!

    Hi Trill,

Oh, it's just getting better and better around here! (NOT!!!) To make the long story as short as I can... I'm having off and on mild sore throat and moderately sore ear on my right side, but OMG two days ago MAJOR tooth pain on the same side! I'm popping Tylenol like they're M&Ms and it's barely touching the pain, so I dug out the big guns and hit it with the oxycodone...finally got a little relief. Then about 4 pm today I had to pee, and OMG, PAIN!!! So it's looking like a UTI on top of whatever is wrong in my head. And oddly enough, NO FEVER. I've been calling the dentist, cancer center, and primary care physician all afternoon...very confusing trying to decide who to see... ended up with an appointment with PCP Wednesday afternoon. Been online all night trying to find some answers. Am officially giving up now! Hoping the docs won't be asses and will actually communicate with each other tomorrow so I'll get the proper tests and prescriptions.

And LOL, I bought some cranberry extract caps for the UTI pain, and happy to say no pain when I just peed, but the LOL part is that my pee is bright neon orange!! Wait till they get a cup of THAT at the lab tomorrow!

I am sooooooo tired! Cancer is hard work! And my poor mom just had eye surgery this morning and is in a lot of pain, and she is totally freaking out about that and all my strange symptoms, and she sent me out on a massive Ben and Jerry's reconoissance run (and the whole time I'm feeling that awful "gotta pee, gotta pee, gotta pee" feeling), with a stop to pick up pizza on the way home! Poor woman. She had no idea there could be so many side effects from chemo.

    Ugh, what a day!

    HI NCBeachGirl---

Wow, poor you! What a saga!

I know about the UTI stuff. Last month I had a UTI brought on by the fact that I have sinus allergy issues and a bad cough comes with that and so I wear a little leakage pad cause the dribbling will happen in the middle of a cough. But that damp thing pressed up against one's body after awhile--the critters love to grow there and BOOM! A UTI.

I was prepared, though--with lots of cranberry tea and the capsules also. So I drank tea morning noon and night.

But still it lingered....just didn't quite go away...all that tea!!

    THEN I caught a break--and a surprising one.

I went online and found a treatment that I started immediately. And it worked!

I had Vitamin C on hand so took 1500 mg (a 1,000 and a 500) every two hours for two days. Gulped a lotta water with it. I felt relief pretty much the next day. I got the hours a little mixed up cause I fell asleep but pretty much kept to that schedule.

Then on day 3 I took the 1,500 mg every 8 hours. Again--lots of water.

I did this for two days.

After that I just took 1500 mg a few more times--a dose a day for about a week, tapering off.

Hey, it worked! The critters can't take the highly acidic urine.

That was two plus weeks ago and it's gone for good.

Well, that's my tip for UTI relief. I got a big bottle of vitamin c to keep on hand.

I hope you got some help from your docs about what the heck is going on now. AND that your mom's eyes are doing better also. We at least have nice weather here on the mid-Atlantic today. I spent the afternoon in the U of MD Dental School getting my teeth cleaned. Then to the store to shop then home.

Now bed. Yes, we need lots of rest, us gals here on the BCO thread.

Bye for now and hope things are improving down your way and you've found out what's going on--

Molly-- Yes, that is odd...but I guess we all have slightly different "systems" so one might work for me but not you.

I hate those UTI's! Can be so annoying cause if you drink lots you pee lots--and really can hardly go anywhere.

A few years ago I had a UTI and was out of cranberry. I headed to the store after lots of water but I'd peed a lot and put on a big ole bladder leakage pad and thought I was OK.

Then, on the way out of town, a traffic blockage--big time. Just sitting in traffic! And of course I had to pee a lot!

Luckily I was able to turn off onto a side street and returned home just in time. In our building we have a restroom on the first floor and I barely made i....

    WHEW! That was scary!
