2017 Running Thread
"Welcome to the happiest thread on BCO!
We've had a lively conversation in the Run thread in the past, with busy times and lulls, about running through chemo, running bras, fitness watches, training regimens, physiotherapy, and so forth.
This thread is for anybody that's "running". "Running" is not a pace and it's not a distance. It's an intention and an action to challenge ourselves. Truth be told, there are times when walking is "running", and a few shuffling laps of the surgery ward a day after mastectomy is not much use for the body, but of immeasurable value to the mind. I recall a management trainer at a former workplace saying, "if a thing is worth doing, it's worth doing badly, if that's the only way you can do it." We've never judged pace or distance here. Some who will visit the thread are in Week 1 Couch-to-5K and some are veteran marathoners, and there's something to learn from everyone. We celebrate heart. We also commiserate with those tough outings, injuries, and recovering from surgeries and other treatments. Some people do lots of run events, and others don't ever do the events. That's okay, but we traditionally maintain a running event calendar at the top of the thread to cheer on those who are doing the events, and to encourage those who are "on the fence" about whether to do one."
I will do my best to update the race listings often

February 26, paws fur pink 5k. I got my dog in August, she needed to be rehomed. She came the same day I found out I needed radiation. I ran with her daily during treatments and now we will run our first 5k together.

I have always been a runner before my diagnosis & I am almost half way on chemo and still manage to get out every week.... it may not be fast or pretty but it's my link to normality and sanity so I am determined not to give it up.
Doing whatever you like to do at whatever pace suits is the key... it's all about helping the mind as well as the body..... keep going ladies stay strong ...best wishes to you all xx

This thread has been very very empty recently. I hope its just that everyone is out running around and doing fun things
So to maybe get some conversations going again.. Ill start .
1. I signed up for my first FULL marathon.. my goal is to finish.. on my feet
Its not til Jan 2018 in disney world. but Im not really known for doing a lot of training.. so eeeekkkkk.
2. I might sign up for the Tinkerbell pixie dust challenge on mothers day weekend. 2 weeks after doing the darksdie challenge in disney world in april. and then i might sign up for the Disney double dare in sept. those count as "training long runs" right??? :P
3. my friend does her long runs with a hydration pack . good idea? bad idea? preferred brands?
4. what to eat during a full?
5. saw an article about running comando.. no undies. thoughts?? i havent done this. i might try.. not sure. its one less layer.. but a layer that doesnt bother me or chafe.
-
panthrah..thank you for starting the thread.
I'm not running a Full Marathon, but we are doing a Relay for the full for my 40th this year. I will be running in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon Relay on April 30th and the Williams Route 66 Half Marathon on November 19, 2017. Then I will no longer be able to do Halfs or Fulls. Please add me to the list.
My oncologist surgeon said due to my bone loss that I need to stop running, so I"m going to just do 10Ks in 2018.
As for your questions.. 1. Congratulations that sounds like a lot of fun
2. Sign up for the fun ones. I always wanted to do the Dark side.
3. I have a hydration pack I run with. It's a cambak that is a vest. I love it, because I can carry other things in it like GU
4. I don't eat anything before my halfs I will take GU with me and jello energy, but I like to run empty.
5. I love running comando. I do use AD cream, practice first. The first time you do it you will feel weird, but then after that you will feel so free.
Good luck!
-
I also just ordered an interval timer (20 bucks) cause my watch ( 500 bucks..gift) is too damn complex to set up intervals
next race ill try out the timer, hydration pack and commando and see how things go
Fairydogmother.. your races have been added

My dog and I finished our first 5k for breast and canine cancer. We finished in 31 minutes. Not too bad considering we stopped a few times to control her excited barking, she pooped and somebody stopped to take our photo.
-
how cute is that !
-
Hello all!
I am just getting back into running. My breasts still feel weird when I run? But I have gotten up to 2.5 miles so far.
I have signed up for the WDW Jan 2018 marathon (she is running it for her 40th birthday). We did the Disneyland Half in 2014, but have mostly stuck to 5k and 10k in the interim before I was diagnosed last June
-
FairyDogMother, I did OKC Memorial marathon last April and loved it! All except the 20 mph headwind for the last ten miles. I managed to do the entire thing barefoot and had a great time. It was a moving experience, emotionally, with all the firefighters in full gear running as well. OKC really turns out in support for this race. First time I ever had beer and doughnuts together during a race.
-
bareclaws - my sister lives in OKC and said the same thing about the wind!
Panthrah - thanks for starting this thread!
Unbreakable - I love the idea of a dog run!
Ladies, I would like your opinion. Did any of your PS recommend that you never wear underwire again, and did you ever break that rule? I have been having trouble with my non-underwire sports bras - they have good compression, but my right implant starts shifting over into the center (and I am terrified of uniboob) and sometimes gets sore). I am interested in trying a new underwire sports bra, but my PS said that with no feeling, she has had patients puncture themselves with the underwire (broken bra, obviously) and not know it until it was too late.
Sorry that was long. Even if you don't have that experience, what bra do you run with? I am measuring about a 34 DD
-
Orca- I have mini boobs.. but for the races I have been using the underarmor zip up sports bra. and they hold everything rather snug. and the zip is magical at the end of the race when i just want to shower. no wiggling trying to get out of a wet sports bra. I am part of the roller derby community and several of the ladies swear by the victoria secrets sports bras. I havent tried those yet but ya never know. and I recently was having pain .. daily... in booth boobs. I know it takes a while to heal from surgery but come on.. its been plenty of time. i said screw this and swapped to the non underwire bra at target. ta da.. ive been pain free ever since. now the bra is plain and boring but whoa is it soft and super comfy. but since im a mini boob girl.. not sure how well those will hold up for DD
at least they are cheap enough to try
Now my turn... since i did sign up for my first full... any tip from you magical ladies ?? and Orka... maybe ill see ya there

BMX next week. I am not having reconstruction and do not plan to wear prostheses. I feel like I can dress most of the time in clothes that don't draw attention to what's missing. But not sure what to wear while running, since running clothes typically don't camouflage much. Any ideas?
-
Bareclaws- Since I havent had a BMX.. Id would sort of think the scar tissue might be sensitive and maybe one of the real light "bra-letttes" or camis just to keep yourself from chaffing might be nice.
-
bareclaws - as far as running, that is the time I wish I had "gone flat."
I used to be a nice A cup before kids. I would look for some of the tops with built in sports bras and blousy over-shirts? Or ones with ruching. I used to know all the ways to make my mini boobs look "more." Like this one: http://www.target.com/p/women-s-banded-bottom-tank...
-
Has anyone used salt tabs/pills for long runs?
-
I've used gummies with sprinkle of sea salt in the bag.
-
Is anyone running? Racing?I had BMX twelve days ago and really started trying to get beyond a walk today, with some success. Five miles and I may have done the last mile barefoot, which felt divine. I can feel my breath and callouses coming back, which totally tanked during chemo the last few months. I start Taxol and Herceptin soon and want to be in the best shape possiblebefore that new hell begins.
-
Ill be out of town for two weeks doing 3 races and bunch of other fun things
:) so if anyone adds new races I will add them when I return
-
annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd nothing.... where did everyone go? did ya give up running for Netflix?
-
I haven't been released to do anything more than leisurely walking since surgery. I'll be here once that happens, though. Hoping running will help minimize the side efffects of chemo. It probably won't be pretty but if I can slog out a few miles, I'll be happy.
-
Working on it. After AC and BMX, I found myself in the worst shape I've been in for a long time. So am trying to get out there four to five times a week for a walk/jog. It's not what it was, but it's something and I'm pushing the jog, depending on day of the week. Herceptin and Taxol on Fridays and I'm jacked up on steroids for about 48 hours=better performance. Crash on Sunday, so nothing on Monday. Then claw my way back to Friday.
I had to back out of planned participation in 200 mile relay in Colorado. I'll be in the big middle of radiation. 😩 Very disappointed. This team was supposed to be a memorial to my husband, who died last August.
Cdv, I hope you're finding it possible to run during the Herceptin and Taxotere, especially since Herceptin can cause heart problems. Are you doing Herceptin for a full year
-
Yes, the 12 with Taxol and thenevery three weeks for 9 months. Hoping the side effects are minimal enough that I can run but will definitely force myself to walk if nothing else. My onc wants me on tamoxifen or an AI for the pr+ status, too. Hoping those side effects don't derail me.
-
bare~ I am so sorry you weren't able to honor your husband the way you wanted to. You hold him in your heart every night and every second you fight this awful disease. I know the want and need to re gain your stamina and fitness. I'm battling daily as well. Last week I jogged 22 miles, this week i am taking it easy, my body screams at me and let's me know when I can and cannot do the excersise! I received a fit bit as a gift and it really motivates me everyday to keep moving.!!! I hope for nothing but strength and good days ahead for us all ! ~M
-
Cool mornings=good runs! My best today in many months. Beginning to think it might be possible to get back to where I was. Or within shoutin distance, anyway.
....throwing my shoulders back and owning my flat front.
-
bareclaws~. That's awesome. You're an inspiration! Way to go!!! Hugs! ~M~
-
Bareclaws, so glad to hear you had a good run! Hope you have many more to come

Hi All!
My name is Jessica and I live in Billings, MT. My best friend talked me into doing a half marathon in September. It's the Montana Marathon Half on Sept 17th in Billings. Better put me on the list to make it official
I'm also planning on doing the Heart and Sole 5k on June 17th and the Big Sky State Games 10k on July 15th. Maybe another 5k or 2 sprinkled in there depending on what else I get talked in to....
I've ran off and on most of my life, I guess. I ran track and cross-country in middle school/high school. I was a sprinter and long jumper until I hurt my knee and couldn't do that anymore so some friends talked me into joining cross country. I'm usually a fair-weather runner and go for jogs when it's nice out and a 5k or 2 in the summer and usually don't do as much in the winter. The weather has been crappy here, so I try to do at least 30 minutes on the elliptical 3-4 days a week. I just finished chemo (TC) at the end of March and am still on Herceptin through December. Also started Tamoxifen this week. This is a big challenge for me to complete a half marathon, I've probably never ran more than 5 or 6 miles at a time and that was when I was in much better shape. My body has been through hell, so just trying to get back to where I was before all this is challenging.
-
Jez, nice to meet you, I know how hard it is to get back to where your mind remembers your body being ! I think that's pretty awesome that your powering through with chemo. I was in bed down and out! After a little while the neuropathy got better and last week I jogged 22. Miles with some walking in there as well. I was also very fit and find it heartbreaking not to be able to Do my mile in 7 mins anymore! I try not to push too hard but I just want my old life back. I hope your able to continue to get stronger and get to the point or goals you have set! ~M~ it's nice to meet you, but I am sorry it's on this cancer forum. Always keeping all in prayer !
