DH and DS. We will go out to eat at the restaurant of DH's choice. DS bought a lawn game as a present, so maybe he'll come over and we can try it out. Then DH might go fishing, which he loves but hasn't had time to do yet this summer. Something I liked to do with my father when I was growing up was....
-
Everything! But I'll go with fishing. My dad took me out on the lake during the weekends he wasn't on call (he was a physician).
The best advice my father gave me...
-
(Background: my whole family was born diehard Washington Redskins fans. And on Sundays we were even allowed to do our homework during the game. Whenever we lost, seriously-my whole family would be grumpy the entire week) until.......
My Daddy called a family meeting and said, "It isn't our whole life, it is just a football game. So from now on if we lose, everyone is allowed to be in a bad mood on Monday only! And then we will enjoy the rest of the week. And win or lose, we will always be Redskins fans."
After that, our weeks were much better, as were our perspectives! And it was an excellent example to be set for any negativity I have faced in my life. I have suffered many more and much deeper losses than football games, and it is normal and healthy to grieve for a loss or a setback, but I never let anything consume my whole life or destroy my spirit.
So thank you, Daddy, for teaching me to be a survivor from an early age, how to love with all of my heart, and how important loyalty is.
I miss him every day. Happy Father's Day in Heaven, Daddy.
Let's continue this, and Happy Father's Day everyone!
The best advice my father gave me was.......

guide by being an example, not by telling people what to do. My dad seldom gave advice and never without being directly asked. But his actions were my guide.

Pheasant, that's funny! My dad also used to say (still does) don't let the bastards get you down.
Georgia, thoughts and prayers with you today. Your dad was obviously an amazing man.
Do not, and I mean do not get in my father's way when it comes to Ohio State football.:)
Best advice my dad has ever given me (and there's a lot to choose from) is to wait for someone to ask for your advice or opinion, because it will be appreciated. This was given to me when I was promoted to an executive from an assistant, and wasn't sure how to handle large staff meetings. My dad said, wait for someone to ask you, "what do you think". He was right, and I still use this tactic.
Best advice my pops gave me..

Go to all the reunions, weddings, anniversaries, holidays, fun activities etc. that you can with family and friends; otherwise you will just end up going to funerals.

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.....(re: consoling me on being dumped by my 1 month romantic flame who I am sure dumped me because I wasn't ready for s-e-x!)
I've loved everyone's stories! And lol and thank you Ruth and hsant! Lol Pheasant! Ruth, like yours my father led by example. My first post was more a lesson I learned from him.
A funny story....I used to want to do everything my Daddy did, I just admired him so much. I LOVED my mom's cucumber salad SOOOOO much, but at dinner one time when I was little, my dad refused it. I said "Daddy! Why don't you want it?"He said, "Oh, it gives me too much gas." So I stopped eating it immediately, starting that night. I'm serious, like 6 months later my mom again served her cucumber salad. I had refused it again but my dad did not. I exclaimed, "But Daddy!! Stop!! That gives you gas!!!!" And he laughed and said, "Oh yeah it does but it isn't that big of a deal." I said "Dad!!!! I haven't eaten this in 6 months because you didn't eat it!!" 😂😂 and I inhaled it from then on!!!
A funny story about my dad is........
-
When my dad was about 86 or so, our high school football team was in a big playoff game in the town where my dad lived. DS was on the team, as were several other of his friends whom my dad knew very well (liked adopted grandchildren). My dad was a sports nut and was excited to come to the game, but he warned us that he couldn't cheer very loud because his church choir was singing the next morning & they were going to be short on basses.... he had to save his voice! Of course, once the game began he yelled louder & was more involved in the action than anyone (for an elderly choir member he said some pretty bad things about the ref's calls!!!!).
Another funny 'dad' story is......
-
When I was growing up my dad was the service manager of a shop at a Buick dealership. One day there was a fire in the shop. My cool, calm dad was credited with getting all the people and cars out safely. He was even interviewed by the local news. He was his usual quiet, modest self about it. Many, many years later I learned, through his admission to my husband, that he actually caused the fire!
