OPPS, This is an exercise thread! Walked and rode stationary bike today, along with errands. It is difficult to get everything in during this busy time of year....Does baking cookies count as exercise?

my sunshine, if you beat the cookie batter by hand it's exercise.

Baking cookies only count as exercise if you lift one after the other from cookie sheet to mouth, repeat!

DecisionFreak, the AI's are there for a reason and most don't have a problem with SE's or can't really place the blame as some things just come as we age, especially if we are not active (which is why you are exercising, correct?). Granted there is no way to know for sure so each has to make their own decision.

2-hour line dance class then 30 minute workout in the pool.

DF I should add that despite some side effects I find the AIs tolerable. One of the reasons I exercise a lot is I feel like my aches are because I'm an athlete. it changes my mindset from sick cancer patient affected by her meds to simply a healthy individual who worked out. Plus I am sure it has helped lessen the side effects.

Thanks for the compliment, Decision. What everyone else has said is true, most people do NOT have horrible SEs on AIs, it's just natural that ladies who have difficulties with them are the ones talking about them. I, unfortunately, have a number of local acquaintances who have had BC. This is just anecdotal, but NONE of us had terrible SEs from AIs (annoyance ones, yes). I came to taking AIs through an unusual route as I was initial misdiagnosed as triple negative (long story), so when I found out I was estrogen positive and therefore COULD take an AI, I was thrilled. What I would say is, once you've done your research and made a commitment to it, then shut down the computer (as far as the AIs go) and just take it like you'd take any other medication, vitamin, whatever, and go out and live your life. Don't go looking for side effects, if you are going to have them, they will find you.

That being said, what minor SEs I had went away when I was done, and I am 100% back to my 'normal' (so normal, in fact, that for the first time in a decade I bought two TURTLE NECK sweaters!!!!! Shocking!!!). I really think exercise is THE one big thing that helped me, both physically and mentally, get through the whole thing.

Well, I baked my Christmas cookies this afternoon, and since I hadn't quite put myself into a sugar coma (eating dough, broken cookies, burnt cookies, licking the frosting bowl etc), I braved the roads and made it to my exercise classes....no hot yoga for me, obviously from my choice of places to live, I'd rather be cold.

    Ruth...love the picture

Decision...please remember not everyone has side effects from AI's...I know people who had NONE at all....everyone is different and sometimes if one AI doesn't work another will. Me, I was one who had issues with all of them....but I tried for 3 1/2 years.

Not a good walking day...Didn't go out for a midday walk at work so only at 11,500K....its been a while since I have walked so little. Work has been hectic so I haven't been getting out enough during the day. After winter break, I'm going to have to get back to walking every day at work even if just 20 minutes.

I did walk at 6 this morning...bundled up in my snow pants, hoodie, down vest and ski jacket and snow boots...stayed toasty warm. Tomorrow morning will be in single digits again so will have to bundle up. Will walk at 6 then shower at 6:30 in time to leave around 7:10 for work. Friday I can wait till the sun comes out......And I'm officially on winter break after tomorrow!!! Two weeks to catch up at home...and hopefully make up for lost time walking!!!

DF before I started on the AIs I had read all the blogs and I was petrified, I put if off and I was terrified the first day I put one in my mouth, and you know what happened .... Nothing. Along the way I had aches and pains but came to find out it was was mostly arthritic changes in my body and like Ruth I believe that the exercise has helped tremendously, when I did have problems it was with my hands but I work with my hands so I founds soaking my hands in warm water helped me and I also recommend the turmeric I add it to most of my dishes when I'm cooking.

Forgot to tell you how cold it is here, yesterday morning it was 39 and this morning 43, I so admire you ladies who go out and exercise in the cold, I just pulled the blankets up around my ears and snuggled in. No gym tonight, came home and got into my recliner which is fatalistic I fell off to sleep for 2 hours so I'm taking today as my rest day.

Thank you, everybody that wrote me about the AI side effects. I am way too wound up.

I am such a mess that I thought I was on the Crazy Town thread. Some of you may have wondered why I called you crazies.

I have lost enough fat in my calf area that the Muk Luk boots with the sweater knits that I bought sometime this past month are falling down my legs.

I am still in contact with a former boyfriend who runs in the major marathons. He is a jerk most of the time. I think he is secretly dancing in the street about my new program to slim down and shape up. He is big on being lean and fit. He knows when I decide to do something that it is full steam ahead. He irritates me so much that I would stay fat just because it bothers him, ha, ha. However, I can't stay fat.

Raising my arms straight up in the air while yelling FAT has become an established part of my daily routine. It is satisfying in a way to admit that I am fat. Many people do not know that I am at least 42 pounds overweight because I know how to dress. But, I am in reality FAT, but not forever. I bet my FAT routine would drive my ex-boyfriend crazy.

Not been posting here for a bit yet have been keeping active each day. Mary, have not taken you up yet on the weekly weight challenge and it's nagging on my thoughts, so I think that is going to change. HeidiHill, sending you a holiday wave across the channel and Kindergarten, enjoyed reading of your travels. Cheryl, learning #71 and much harder or as LM's says, more challenging than #70. Ruth, nice photo of WWW and Badger, your new home is a busy project. DecisionFreak, I am one of the bc minority that had crippling AL side effects and with oncs blessings, forgo hormone treatment. The 1.5% offered was not worth the negative quality of life that I was experiencing, so I do other things, such as, keep a low BMI (20), exercise well over the recommended 150 minutes a week to help keep recurrence at bay and don't smoke or drink and try to reduce any environmental impact factors if I can. I'm sure you will work out what is best for you. FYI, some of you may find this new-news release interesting: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-35111449

Baked last night, vegan Russian tea cookies, made up in small wrapped parcels, for the ladies at Pink Ribbon Pilates this morning as we are having a little Christmas do. One member is a vegan, so went with it for all.

I concur wholeheartedly with everyone on how much exercise helps. Do to a degenerated lower disk, I was not in good shape when I had my BMx. As soon as I could, I got on a treadmill. I still fight nerve pain, but the days in which I can exercise at least 45 mins, I sleep better and have fewer SEs from my meds.

Question about turmeric. . .when I first heard about it, I looked it up and read that it mimics PR. Since I'm highly ER/PR+ I haven't tried it?????

Very tired from no sleep last night (got home too late to go to gum) and on the way to work. At least I ride a nice commuter bus and don't have to drive in WetLanta traffic.

This morning I weighed in at 185.5, down from 189.8 when I joined this thread. Interval training is miraculous in tandem with as much other physical activity as I can manage. I set out my exercise plan in an earlier post and will implement as I can. Plan to add an exercise bike ASAP for endurance training. It is amazing what I can do without going to then gym with this lower quality elliptical bike for interval training along with other low tech interventions.

Very little junk food, small portions of meat twice a week, and no high fat dairy products. Apples have chromium that helps improve insulin sensitivity. Peanuts are high fiber and have been studied for the impact on weight control. As my father used to say, "We will get there if it don't rain and the creek don't rise."

    Thank you for being inspiring.

Doing great, DecisionFreak! Cheryl, that's exactly what happened to me! I got too deep into mammogram pose, my arm and fingers were paralyzed. Fortunately, I'm mostly back to normal. LilacBlue, waving from across the Alps. Ruth, I still can't wear turtlenecks, only thin summer scarves will do.

On the subject of exercise, it helps stave off colds and flu, and it does help reduce pain from AIs according to this randomized study. I read a study years ago on the virus fighting potential of exercise and I have to say it has worked for me. I'm sick much less often and never as bad as it used to get. It seems though you still have to be careful at the gym because you might still be susceptible right after exercise until the immune system kicks in. I also believe it can help with cancer fighting because any inflammation reduction is beneficial.

Last night I was learning this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vv5ivC4GJd0 Also learned how to dance milonga style: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oN0o_ZgdCL0 It's a real workout!! Will do weight training tonight.

    TwoHobbies, thanks for the welcome!

Yeah, the DC area is a pretty fun place to live, but the traffic is TERRIBLE!

Exercise is the best! I credit it with my relatively easy time with treatment. My dog was a great motivation to get out and walk, even when I didn't feel that great.

Heidi, I'd love to see that mammogram pose. I can almost picture it . . . .

DecisionFreak, I continue to be impressed and now you inspire me! A gym is absolutely not necessary especially when you are motivated.

3-mile Walk away the pounds with Leslie Sansone class this morning followee by Tai-Chi class my sister wanted to try. Guess I prefer more active movement. I can see the value but just not for me. Getting ready to sneak out on sister and visiting friend for a bike ride.

patoo, you know that old, gnawed saying, "necessity is the mother of invention." When I was on the fast track, I belonged to a health club in downtown, D.C. It was there that I discovered that Clinton star boy George Stephanopoulos is a weakling and shrimp. Oops, my bad. He is a human being and I am FAT. Oh, and talk show host Larry King is tall but I saw him on M Street, not at the health club. While I at the name dropping game, Bill Clinton was handsome and charming when I saw him one day many years ago. Diane Sawyer, truly stunning former beauty queen, me thinks. A friend of mine was walking down the street somewhere and bumped into someone. She looked down a foot or so and realized it was Robert Redford. He is very smart and talented and short. I have more celebrity and famous people sightings...but I don't want to give away all my stories in one place. Oh, the point was that I didn't get all that much physical improvement from working out at a health club. Our ancestors did not have health clubs. They were strong because unlike me they did not sit on the couch all day. Time to get up and move..

I love bike riding. I decided that it is too risky where I live. Nobody expects to see a 60 year young woman on an antique Huffy bike riding the loop in this tiny, isolated place where I live. It is not a good time to be thrown from a bike.

    Hello All & welcome, bluedog.

Today I started my extended sub duties (for a friend having surgery). Luckily I am pretty good shape because the road department was still cleaning snow when I got to school & I had to climb a HILL of snow in the middle of the street between the parking lot and the school (with a bag in each hand)....or walk down a whole block (which I was too lazy to do). I had to make some foot grips with my boot and then take a running leap to vault my way over the top and down the other side!!! I earned my pay once I got inside too because my friend teaches slow learner/behavior problem kids. I was on the move every moment......luckily there will be Christmas vacation in the middle of my Tour of Duty! My Book Club meets tonight so I will try to squeeze in a little abs right now.

Decision...good for you on the weight loss... I think I caught your pounds!!!

The past couple days have NOT been good walking days....have missed my mid day work walks....tomorrow it is supposed to warm up to the 40's and 50's on Saturday so will have to make up for the past couple days. I'm officially on winter break, so time to get in gear with walking...

The year after I was Dx, I got my annual card for mammo....and since I had a bilat, there was nothing to mammo...I called the place and they felt so bad...they said it was an automated system that sends out reminder cards.....

But you're right...there is NO cure for stupid!!!

Enjoying all the tales of exercise, and congrats DecisionFreak for coming down one pants size!!! I would also suspect that you have been building denser muscle which is always more attractive than what my father used to refer to as "jiggle". Last night was a miserable evening to walk, but I did it. Felt elated afterwards, think from braving the wind and rain. Certainly had a glow going on.

Have to wrap things for our nonprofit Christmas party and proofread a report prior to heading out. Then I start the second one. Too much time on my backside sitting recently, but my bank account is smiling.

Tomorrow I head for the mountains with my skis. Hoping for fresh powder. Haven't seen that in a couple of years, and the best skiing. Ten miles of x-country should do wonders for revving up the system.

Sunday is a Seattle day as going to an early evening show. Will be writing the second report and steaming Christmas puddings in between everything. Hoping also that I get out skiing a few more times over Christmas-New Years. Will do wonders to offset the sitting! - Claire

Scottiemom, I saw your question about Tumeric so I did some research. I always do research on any supplement or vitamin I take. I am 89% estrogen positive (or was 4 months ago) so I am very careful with everything, even do research on make up and lotions, etc. by the way, I use Juice Beauty products. I like everything but their liquid make up, but they are coming out with a new one in January. They have a website. 100 % organic.

Anyway, back to Tumeric. It is perfectly safe and does not mimic estrogen. One study said Tumeric is highly recommended for BC. The biological active components of the spice, Tumeric include Curcumin which has been shown to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and other benefits. It has been shown to have anti-Cancer functions against several types of BC, including ER+ and PR+.

The only Al which has been questioned is Tamoxifen. Maybe not enough research? Don't know why, Arimidex is fine. So, not sure whst you take.

I also read about Tumeric on the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center website that it was beneficial for BC, as well as reducing inflamation from arthritis.

FYI, I take Organic Tumeric Curcumin from NativOrganics (from Amizon), 350 mg. a day. I had a lot of rib inflamation due to excessive coughing during chemo. That has gone away.

Hope this helps. I guess we all have to be careful about what we put on and in our bodies and make the best decisions for us.

I've been afraid to take turmeric as a supplement since reading this: https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/78/topics...

I don't know what the answer is- just passing along. In general i feel eat these things but when you supplement you're putting abnormal amounts into yourself which acts more like a drug. Which could be good but do we know the true result?

I got my dexa scan results and the good news is "stable" after the AI and forced menopause of two years! Unfortunately I was already in osteopenia but glad to hear I maintained. Keep exercising ladies!

My week of semi sick turned into suddenly very ill Wednesday overnight. I haven't been so sick since chemo. Not good for my exercise but good for weight since I've eaten exactly 8 crackers and two cups of tea w honey in 41 hours. I'm debating whether I'm up for a short walk or if back to the sofa is a better idea.

I have been MIA yesterday and today. I will get back on the elliptical bike and my exercise routine tomorrow. I am down in the dumps big time, but the vigorous exercise will lift my spirits. I am certain that I am still detoxing from the Tamoxifen and the antidepressant.

It rarely gets cold enough here for a heavy sweater, but today it was cold, 45 degrees and I wore a beautiful wool sweater that I bought recently.

So, I am not inspiring today, but I will move forward. Yes, I will.

Herded cats......er, I mean substituted again today. It's cold out and I didn't feel like the treadmill, so dug out a Denise Austin indoor walking DVD, which was actually pretty good. Now I am off to a wrestling match, where I will burn off some calories just from writhing around and saying "Ouch, ouch, ouch" while I watch.

Yes, DecisionFreak depending on you to keep inspiring!

One hour dance exercise class this morning. Was fun, full body workout. Then had final meeting with builder's designer and then signed off on contract so am officially building my house. Closing date is March 10th. Exciting.

Probably won't post tomorrow as busy with bowling at 11am, a Christmas play early afternoon and then Motown Christmas Show in the evening. Have kept our visitor busy every day for almost 2 weeks. Sure she will be glad to get home Sunday evening if only to sleep in her own bed and relax. Pretty sure she will be back in a few months buying a home here though.

    Night sculpted friends.
