so glad you guys have this board. I have always hated pink, having had breast cancer twice 25 yrs apart I'm one of those people waiting behind my door with a baseball bat just waiting for those Pinktober types to ring my doorbell. My husband as a,ways laughed about how I'll come charging out of wherever I am like a rabid pit bull to chase those types away. I live for it! He'll just innocently say, "I think you want to talk to my wife..." Then he just stands back as I do my thing.

I joined Breast Cancer Action when I was diagnosed the first time in '90. I was in my 30's then, they had just the amount of anger I needed to see.

As to healthy lifestyle keeping one safe.... My late younger sister who died 5 yrs ago at 550 lbs had everything wrong with her....except breast cancer, while Inthe non smoking, non drinking, running vegetarian who weighed 112 lbs got Triple Negative bc... 25 yrs later now everything else the same except now eating a vegan diet ... I get diagnosed with Triple positive ( at least more positive in my old age) if anybody starts talking to me about "healthy lifestyle" is gonna get invited to "say hello to my little friend"

And bodies with a genetic predisposition.

Ladies I was just thinking October is next month! Ughhh a whole month of how to proven BC! Do you know that after my operation I was told by someone that I least I got a "good" kind of cancer!

I hate pinktober too so glad I haven't seen that ad! Geeze Louise the drama!!! Scare the shit out of people why don't they???? After 25 yrs and now another round with this thing I do like how I look, but I can't stand my neck and that's got nothing to do with cancer! Don't show us a bunch of people who've had "work " done. I'm also tired of reminding people that there's no "they got it early" though that can be good, it's still all a crap shoot until I die getting hit by a bus

I do think it has to do with sexualization...or that's a big part of it, back in the late 90's when I finally talked about my 1990 diagnoses publicly, I was on a talk show in LA and I got many "boobie" themed "gifts" from well meaning morons the worst was an album, with songs themed around breast cancer...sung by a woman with an acoustic guitar..I have mentally blocked the name and just spend the last 20 minutes on google looking for it

Notice how there's virtually no mention of guys getting breast cancer amongst all the sea of pink. In fact, it likely stops guys at risk from coming forward, since they don't consider themselves as candidates for breast cancer. Because male breasts are not considered sexual, we are not offered reconstruction.

Our odds of surviving the disease are lower, and the support system is basically ourselves. We are the forgotten, and often ignored, 1% of all breast cancer cases.

Actually, BCO is excellent and I have learned so much here. There is a male section of the site, but it's not used much by men with the disease. Guys generally don't talk amongst themselves as much as women, which is too bad.

Someone else showed pictures of shirts that a fire department was selling. I hate all the pink, but our local fire department does do all the pink and raises money for people in the local community. A few years ago, they had a spaghetti dinner, and I was one of the recipients. I was very grateful for their help and that they specifically stated that it could be used for whatever I needed/wanted it to be used for which was so helpful. So there are some good things that come out of the sea of pink that are not related to the charity that shall not be named.

As I pull in front of a restaurant tonight, I look at their windows, not prepared for what I saw. PINK OR BUST with pink bras painted all over them. I went in, I was hungry. The 20 something hostess explains the specials. Then I asked her what was the pink crap about.

Oh she chirps. We're starting breast cancer awareness early, and for a dollar more, you can get Pink tacos!!!!!

I ran my hand across my chest(bmx) said I was very aware of breast cancer, handed her the menu, said I couldn't eat there, and left.
