Exercise and well being during chemo and radiation

I didn't fall off. I was pushed. I have not worked out much since I had my port removed except a couple of days on the elliptical. I was working out and felt like I was overdoing it a bit so I slacked off. Then we had to pull everything out of our master closet to have the carpet replaced and I felt like my body was telling me I should slow down.
-
Allison, that's not a workout, that's torture! I loathe emptying closets
-
5 mile walk this morning. Rads #1 done......big deep breath.
-
It wasn't too bad, Theresa. My husband helped a lot. I wanted to do it for a long time to just give it a good dusting. I have really dry skin and I make a lot of dust.
-
I've been on the wagon but behind in posting.
Yesterday did 45 minutes on the bike, plus lots of errands and ended the day with 11,875 steps.
Love the variety of wagons everyone. Katy, thank you for reminding me of that piece.
We're all getting giddy here in Oregon as rain is predicted - finally - starting tomorrow. So I'm sure some of us will be posting our umbrella dance photos soon.
Yesterday was the anniversary of the day I had my diagnostic mammo. and US - it still hurts to think about it.
-
Katy, yes, I think 9 miles is my official walking record for a day in 2015. Ah, well I remember when I was a young thing and had the time and willingness to strap on a canteen or two and walk miles through the desert to get to a cup of coffee at a non-Jewish place that was open on the sabbath. Of course, my wife, who calls me a camel, would say that when we're on vacation, I still walk miles in the sun on very little provocation. This summer I haven't, in the name of compliance, but as soon as I find a good paraben-free sunblock that doesn't make me feel like I'm sauteeing in my own sweat, I'll be out there again.
ETA: Yes, we're doing our virtual rain invocations. I'm sorry your imaging still hurts to think about
-
Thanks, Susan. I appreciate your thoughts. It wasn't the imaging that's so painful to flash back to but the results and everything that followed from that. Even though it was a week until the biopsy, it was pretty clear that day that it was cancer and that it had spread to my nodes.
And yes, I too recall a time when my joints didn't say word one if we did a 15 mile hike....

got dressed today
One hour yoga
Maybe a walk later. It's very hot right now! It's usually pretty nice just before sundown..
Cannot WAIT for the pics and/or vivid descriptions of the various rain dances. We sure do need it though.

I've been on the wagon but off the boards. 1 mile, 2 miles, and 1 mile the past 3 days.
Hopeful - I understand how you feel about this particular anniversary. Mine will be just before Christmas and I'm already thinking about it. I barely remember Christmas last year due to being shell shocked.
Katy - sorry you went through such a rough time. Glad you were able to get up and get dressed today - which is not a feat I take lightly anymore! And on top of that, yoga. Hugs for all you have been through.
Karen - congrats on getting that first rads done today!
Ksusan - congrats on finishing rads!
Hope all is going well with surgery and recovery! -
I get it too! Some days I am in my jammies all day. Lately though, I have had several doctor appointments that I hsve to get dressed for. Sad that is the reason, but being 6 weeks out of chemo, some days, my body just says rest. So I do, even though I know I need to exercise. However, good news is that the 2 scans so far - brain and bone that my doctor wanted me to have because of slightly high tumor markers.....were clear! Thst definitely made me feel better immediately! In fact, I walked 1000 steps around the parking lot after hearing that news! I counted! Getting to feel somewhat normal is going to take time for me. Some of you run right through all of this. I am wondering if age has something to do with it. I am 66. I used to be a runner, before dx, I was a power walker, and now have to start over. So, I am trying to jump on that wagon. Sure would help if it was not so hot! Mid 90's everyday!
-
Walked around the park for about 45 minutes with a friend. No idea what distance we covered, but we went up and down hills. So...
Trying to stockpile as much activity as possible as I know after surgery I won't be going anywhere for a while. Bleh.
-
I have a camping trip planned over Labor Day weekend, that's as good as any rain dance.
-
Ah, sloth, you understand the mysteries. Thanks for making it rain!
-
stayed on the wagon despite it being warmer here. Three miles walking today.
Octogirl
-
Sloth - that should do it. I appreciate your sacrifice in planning that trip.
I also plan to do my windows and wash the car, which seems to be the magic combination for our household.
Katy - glad you made it yoga today. That's always good, isn't it?
No formal cardio - just lots of walking downtown, with a few errands thrown in this evening to bring the pedometer up to 10K. We'll see how much more I can work in in the next couple of hours.
-
2 miles walking/strolling around Big Bear Lake. I have been a slacker for three days! But big hike tomorrow planned!
-
3mi walk/slow jog for me today.
PB
-
Hopeful, What kind of pedomitor do you have? You must carry it with you all day.
-
Warning, incoming tomato porn!
I'm still walking so this savory tomato pie is not a diversionary tactic, just cheesy deliciousness and a very worthwhile diet cheat.
-
Looks yummy!
8/27: 3 miles on hills.
-
Natural, Paraben-free sunscreen recommendation for those of you looking:
-
Thanks, Whitney.
-
Sloth- I have just about enough tomatoes now for a pie. Mostly the cherry tomatoes have been ripening, but the onslaught of big boys is coming. Can't wait!
I have a big challenge today to get through the stupid LE lady appt. followed by regular PT. Mygoal is not to cry today. Hopeful for a walk this evening, I am not completely off the wagon, more like hanging on with one hand dragging my feet behind in the Oregon dust.
-
Aww..Katy...we are all here for you. If you are hanging on with one hand, you can be sure those of us on the wagon are holding on to your other hand. You will get through this!

Great news, Sunshine!!
-
That IS GREAT NEWS SUNSHINE!! Not sure how I missed that post but clear scans must be celebrated!! WooHoo!!!!!!!!!
-
Yay Lynn- very happy to hear this
-
great news Sunshine!
4 mile walk today between rainstorms
-
MySunshine - I'm so glad your scans were clear; it must have been tough waiting on those results.
I have a little clip on, battery powered pedometer made by Walk4Life, and yes, I do wear it all day long, not just during exercise. I like it because I can just glance at it and see if I'm where I want to be at any given time of the day - no synching required. Our office bought a bunch of them some years ago at a group rate - I think it was perhaps $25 or less. I've replaced the batteries and the clip a couple of times over the years but overall, it's held up very well. if you're not ready to invest in an electronic gizmo, I can heartily recommend a pedometer. I literally don't leave home without it!
