Raw Apricot Kernels
I was pleasantly surprised to find these at one of my local natural foods markets yesterday, so I bought a bag of them. Just curious if anyone else is using them.

I have not used them but there are some published reports about problems with cyanide and raw apricot kernels. I don not know if this is at all an issue in this case but you might want to look into it. I know you are reading the literature and most likely know way more about this than I do --just just wanted to give you a heads up just in case.

I have eaten them, I think you are only supposed to start with 1, then maybe go to 3. I doubt that small quantities of it would poison me, and to date, I have never had any issues. I camouflage it in a handful of almonds because they are nasty. I didn't do them through chemo, but have started back on my natural substances since chemo has ended.

besa, thanks for the links! There actually was a sign by them in the store that said they could be poisonous in large quantities. The serving size on the package says 6, so I figured 10 probably wouldn't hurt me, and that's what I've had the past two days. Guess I'd better read up on them!
Theresa, these actually taste good -- very much like almonds, with an occasional slightly sour or bitter one in the mix. But for the most part, they taste pretty good.

dlb823 I started out with a small amount because I wanted to make sure lol. I will see if I can find your brand. We have a brand called Apricot Power.
Giving myself another two weeks of recovery before I start my serious alternative treatments. More stabbing, infusions, etc. but I figure it is worth a try.

the package says USDA organic, but does it say where the kernels are from? What is the country of origin?

Theresa, you approached this product a lot smarter than I did! Let's see... no country of origin on the package -- just says Distributed By SUNFOOD, El Cajon, CA. Certified by CCOF.
There's also a warning on the package I didn't even read until just now. WARNING: Apricot kernels have relaxing effects and may lower blood pressure, thus it is recommended to only consume 5 per hour, and no more than 10 a day.
Coincidentally (?) I have felt very off today -- absolutely no energy, which I chalked off to the odd (rainy. extremely humid) weather we've had for the past few days. Hmmm.... I wonder... could they possibly have that immediate an affect on BP?

Let me know what you find out! I intend to keep eating them -- just not as many!

thanks so much! Right now most of the online vendors are out of stock, so I will call tomorrow and see why and when they expect to have product back in stock. I still have a big bag of them at the moment, but I will definitely take you up on the offer if I get close to running out.

I have eaten apricot pits for almost two years. I buy it online from a different company. I started eating them one at a time and repeat every 3 hours when I started. Now I am taking 3 pits four times a day since my body has adjusted to them. I did not see any side effects from taking them but I am not familiar with the brand you found. It has vitamin B17 which has caused so much controversy in the past. You can PM me if you need more info.

They should taste bitter not good. The one I am using is from apricotpower and the label says "bitter raw ".

I think i read somewhere up to 50 as "therapeutic" amounts but I've only eaten approximately 10 a day on/off for about a year without any problems. I just have them in a small container different places and eat 3-4 when i remember.

Hi, my friends sent me about 3 lbs of them. ha ha. I eat 3 a day. Itlaychick, how come you don't eat them during chemo? I am currently on my second cycle of taxotere, Herceptin and perjecta . Just curious. Thanks.

I cut out a lot of stuff during chemo because I didn't want to worry that anything was negatively interacting with the chemo I was getting. Now I am back to taking supplements, alternative stuff, etc. there were just too many question marks in my head about supplements during chemo. I never quit taking magnesium and potassium though

I too am using apricot kernels, 4 kernels, 3 times a day. You have to take Zinc with the kernels.
There are many research papers and articles available online about apricot kernels and B17, some very negative about the benefits and others very positive.

I've thought about adding these but have been worried about the taste, having read they are bitter. I'd hate to buy a whole bag and discover I hate them! But if you say they are good I might give them a go.

labelle, they can be bitter but they can be good too--they have a powerful almond flavor, like almond extract. I have read that you shouldn't eat more than you could apricots in a day. So if you can't imagine eating more than 5 apricots in a day, don't eat more kernels than that. I kind of like the taste of them but I wouldn't be tempted to overeat them, which is a good thing.

For those of you who use raw apricot kernels and are dealing with mbc, have you ever felt a difference in your pain when you were taking them? I've been dealing with a serious uptick in pain in the past couple of weeks, but I've also had significantly elevated TMs that led to a change of meds about a week ago. In the mean time, I've also wondered if the increased pain might be at all related to the apricot kernels sparking increased "activity" where I have mets. I know that's probably far fetched, since I was only doing 6 a day, and I've actually stopped them for now because I don't want them to interfere w/my new meds (Faslodex+Ibrance). But I'm curious if anyone felt increased pain/activity where you have mets and thought it was caused by the apricot kernels/cyanide attacking your bc.

dlb I had taken them years back before I was Stage 1V but stopped. Interesting when my mother had lung cancer in the 1970s she was taking B17, which I believe if the same thing.
The problem with taking with Ibrance/Femara is that there really isn't any great information about what not to take with the Ibrance. So for me I would be very hesitant to take with Ibrance.

Totally agree, pearlady. I have even adjusted when I take my usual supplements (C, E, D, Curcumin, calcium complex, etc.), to be sure I take them apart from Ibrance. I won't do anything to possibly jeopardize the results I'm expecting from Ibrance.

I have been on Ibrance for 5 months and so far good results. I take my Ibrance before bed and my supplements with meals. So after dinner its usually 4 hours apart. I take many mushroom supplements and it seems these have not had an impact on the Ibrance. But the raw apricot kernals really concern me. But like you I keep wondering if they could really provide some added benefit.

My wife started with Ibrance yesterday, in her case is that the CA-15-3 has been elevated for the past 2+, years last test was in the 230s, she was in remission for almost 14 years. She has been monitored regularly and nothing has been found at all, even after the second opinion at Cleveland Clinic that Bone Marrow and blood floating cancer cells was OK. After that was that it went to the 230s, still nothing shows up in any of the tests.One customer came for advice on the accounting for his wife that passed away due to the same cancer my wife had. His wife at this time was taking the B-17 through IV that her husband will administer and did pretty well, I have to mention that they were living out side the US, this should tell you why the administration method. He mention that he is sure, that she would have been ok if they had started earlier base on the well she felt with the vitamin.
What I have read is that is not marketed here for obvious reasons, so I decided to look as I can see you are trying here. What I have found as some of you is the toxicity due the cyanide. I do know, and need to be caution that the concentration of cyanide will increase as the kernel ages regardless if it is in the seed or shelled.

There are Laetrile infusions that are offered as well. A friend of mine was having them during her tx and she sat next to a 911 responder who had lost all of his hair and was having so many pulmonary issues. In and out of Drs. She said by the end of their tx (they became friends) he had a full head of hair. It does have levels of cyanide and really the best way to consume the kernels is to do it the way animals do and eat the whole fruit (organic) of course. Because the pulp and the seeds provide the full nutrition profile. If you aren't going going to do it under the supervision of a dr then this is the best way to add to your tx (and after for that matter). Eating a whole organic apple including seeds is good too

There has been a lot of controversy about bitter apricot kernels for many years.
These bitter apricot kernels are what you find if you crack open the stone of a fresh apricot. The amygdalin content found in these apricot seeds varies depending on their chemical components and whether they are bitter or sweet. The small or wild apricots that are native to Northern China and the Himalayas are higher in amygdalin while the varieties that are found in the US are less potent.
These bitter apricot kernels contain amygdalin and it is this which gives them their bitter taste.
This amygdalin has also been named Laetrile and vitamin B17.
Laetrile is a patented drug name used to describe a purified form of the chemical amygdalin. Apparently it is available as a pill or an injection. There appears to be concern about the effects of Laetrile on patients, especially when taken orally, because intestinal bacteria and some commonly eaten plants contain enzymes that activate the release of cyanide. This effect appears to be lower with injections.
I have never tried this drug and I would not try it. I am not quite sure whether taking laetrile is the same as eating bitter apricot seeds. That is my own personal opinion. I ask myself have there been tests on people eating the seeds to prove that the seeds produce cyanide in the gut? Have there been tests on the Hunza people and others in Central Asia who eat them regularly?
B17, according to various articles, is not actually a vitamin. It is a glycoside. Apparently B17 does not fulfil the definition of a vitamin, as there is no disease associated with a deficiency in vitamin B17.
Apparently amygdalin is found not only in apricot seeds but also in the seeds and flesh from other non-citrus fruits, including apples, peaches, cherries, plums and prunes of up to 2 to 3%. Apricot kernels and apple seeds can hold around 500 milligrams of amygdalin per 100 gram. Amygdalin is also found in most berries that we commonly eat, 500 milligrams a serving. It is also found in some vegetables, beans and pulses.
There is much debate about whether the drug Laetrile is an effective anti-cancer treatment. There does not seem to be any agreement on this debate.

I have consumed apricot kernels for over 7 years. I usually only take them every other day. they are quite safe in small does. I cleared this with my oncologist. In the magazine CURE a peer reviewed research mag put out by Dr.s they also determined that the apricots seed hold promise! My reading and research had confirmed that Sloan Kettering covered this up when apricots seed were investigated for efficiency at reduction of size of tumors. They scrapped the story and a person involved in the study left there , ie fired because he stood up for the truth of the study. As to safety yes that is a concern. I have had stage 4 cancer and there for e didn't have much to loose. I took them and I have also done many other cancer alternatives and I am well 7 years out. A prominent Nurse Practitioner Dr. Carl Helvie was a proponent of them and told me they're safe to take. He conquered incurable cancer of the lung 40 years ago- this a miracle. He takes about 25 apricots kernels a day. there is more information on this at the radio show where i also produce a show. Dr. Hevlies health show is called the holistic health show on www.bbsradio.com. There have been no reports of people being poisoned by them. I am still well. I used both traditional cancer treatments and alternatives like the juicing and vegan diet. I am happy I choose this after much research into actual studies of many different alternatives.
