O.K. Looks like I am going to need a Downton Abbey marathon pretty soon in order to catch up.... I never watched it when it was on PBS.

I bought the first (four?) seasons on DVD as soon as they came out, but then realized that they were Blue-Ray, meaning I could only watch them in the living room.

DH just bought me a little Blue-Ray player which he hooked up to the TV in the bedroom, so I could drift off to dreamland with thoughts of beautiful scenery, lovely clothes, and an old-fashioned way of life.

I really liked the first three seasons, but was disappointed by last season. I will give the new season arty because I too love the scenery and fashions. The way of life? Not so much, but it is fascinating to think that it wasn't so long ago (strict class structure, arcane rules for behavior, limited opportunities for women etc) and watch how it evolved over the 20th century.

Smaarty - that recap show has played I think for the last 3 weeks here in DFW. And I think they have since early Sept (may have date wrong) played all seasons back again. It occupied Sunday afternoons for weeks. I caught Hugh Bonneville, Phyllis Logan (Mrs. Hughes), Rob-James Collier and someone else I forget just by accident on GMA (or was it Today) about a week and a half ago - again dates may be off maybe closer to 2-3 weeks. I'm ready and waiting but then again I love most all of the old Masterpieces. Not so hot about the modern Masterpiece Mysteries. I think I still have one old Miss Marple left to watch back on my old VCR - not modern in this household.

Did you see that Cost Plus/World Market has a collection of Downton Abbey things? I have studiously avoided the store because I would prob. buy one of every item they had.

Everyone was always hyping up the show and I thought, for goodness sake, it sounds so dull. Then I got an iPad this summer and checked out the free stuff on Amazn Prime. Downton Abby was there but still didn't look appealing. Then one day, with time on my hands, I decided to view the first episode and was immediately hooked and watched all four seasons over the next couple weeks.

It is incredible. I love absolutely everything about it, the casting, the acting, the music, the costuming, the story lines. Watching it during the quiet backdrop of the middle of summer, I felt it sort of transform me in some way. Very much looking forward to season five.

I am also a fan of Call the Midwife, have seen all episodes and read the three books it's based on.

There's a website called Couchtuner that I use to watch shows for free. My son told me about it. I just went on YouTube and watched a two minute video to figure out how to use Couchtuner and have finished watching two seasons of the amazing Orange is the New Black and now watching all seven seasons of the excellent Parks and Recreation.

Divine - I was stuck on the couch with a horrible cold. Turned on PBS for something else boring Sunday night. Downton Abbey came on and I was hooked from the 1st episode.

I've seen sporadic episodes of Call The Midwife but prob. only 5-6. It comes on too early here and esp. bad during NASCAR season. I'm ready for more Mr. Selfridge too

What kind of internet connection do you have to get Couchtuner? I have a rather slow DSL but it's the best we can get as rural as we are. DH will not get satellite Hughes net and that's about the last thing available. We have DirecTV, had a long time. DD comes out from Ft. Worth and fumes at the slowness of our internet.

    darn, lost a long post...

Just checked PBS website, if you check it out, there's a cute quiz, which DA job is right for you:

    http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/classic/

    Kinda cute.

Is it just me but Mr. Selfridge and The Paradise seem very similar, almost too much to be on the same network within similar time frames.

Need to check out Couchtuner, thanks for sharing Divine. Missed the entire first season (read about it online), would love to see what I missed

We bumped up to u-verse internet last year and it is a quicker connection than the dsl. I know if you are in a rural area, the Internet options are limited

Great. I have a week to watch the stack of DVD's I have of Seasons 1 - 4.

Since I've only watched one episode (a few weeks ago) I think I'd better start at the beginning and catch up!

Hello all, my daughter and I are trying to plan our Downton Abbey premiere party and laughing/teasing about all the things that could come up to spoil it. But....our fall back is buying the series as soon as it is available. So exciting!

Oh Ms. Pharoah. What a great idea. Are you making English food? That does sound good.

Blessings - I hope you've had a chance to catch up on the tapes. Do you have snow too?

Hello, luv! Sadly, we are not making English food. We thought about having a tea party with little sweets....but we both prefer the taste of the grape, if you get my meaning. Wine and finger food and working hard to make sure the men in our life be quiet during the show....

I try not to get overly excited about things in general....but the season starting is an exception I will make.

Let's all wish Mary the love of her life and modernity.

Today, I saw a commercial for the upcoming season and the theme music from the show was playing, which just sent me to a beautiful place in my mind! I have the music on my ipod, I think I will give a listen to it.

I missed most of the program that came of afterward - The Manners of Downton Abbey. Hope they show it again. Amazing how few of the actors/actresses have the upper crust accent they have on Downton Abbey.

Tonight our PBS has "Tales from the Royal Bedchamber" - explores the public's obsession with royal bedrooms, births and succession

    Happy Birthday 2TA!

    Thank goodness for DVR!!!

LMG - sadly, no, I haven't caught up on all my tapes. What I planned for a quiet, laid-back DA marathon turned into a series of family crises.

On Christmas Day, my sister (77) fell and broke her hip. After the ER, a hip replacement, four days in the CCU because of heart issues, she is now in a Rehab facility. I do all her medical management.

On New Year's Day, my FIL (93) fell and broke his hip. After the ER, a hip replacement, and four days in the hospital, he is now in a Rehab facility (all the way across town from the one Sis is in.) I do all his medical management.

But right now they both are settled and improving, and my calendar is cleared for the next week... and one thing that REALLY relaxes me is Period English films.

So DA here I come!!!! Hoping to watch the first DVD tonight.... then catch up on all four seasons. If I get really behind, I can always buy the Season 5 DVD!!!

Blessings - Your family needs some better luck I would say. Glad they are both improving. How are you doing these days?

There's another period mystery series starting January 18th I think it was. I love those too. Found it - called Grantchester

    Thanks, LMG!

I am actually doing better since I got my oxygen machine. I sleep with it on all night, using a nasal cannula. I sleep less (than my usual 12 hours a night), have more energy when I wake up, and DH says I am even moving and talking faster. I drove on the freeway for the first time since my head injury! Of course it was New Year's Day, and everyone was home nursing a hangover, so the roads were deserted....

    Will definitely check out Grantchester.

How are YOU doing? I still think about the goat I saw in my dream... that little dwarf Nigerian goat named Ludmila!!!

was surprised to see that most (all?) of the trailer for the season premiere was in the first episode.

    This is actually a cake:

That is one creepy cake. I can't imagine eating that thing!

I've recorded the shows but haven't watched the new season yet.

I think I will catch up tonight.
