Downton Abbey

I got Season 4 for Christmas!!!! I. Can't. Wait.
-
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say I predict that they find out Mrs. Bates is responsible for the demise of Mr. Green! But that she was acting in self defense or something
-
I've also been thinking about Mrs. Bates for the shove. The writers just can't let her get away being that goody-goody forever, can they? Everyone else seems to have some secret or surprise hiding under the very proper exterior. Maybe, after last night, even Cora.
I love Maggie Smith more and more each episode. And all the rest as well.
-
So far, I'm liking this season more than season 4, which I thought was boring. Guess, I'm being sucked back in again
-
I've gotten sucked back in too. Regarding the Bates, you just know that Lady Mary's contraceptive in the brown paper bag is going to be found by someone - either Mr. Bates or the police - with dire consequences for poor Anna.
-
I am devouring every enjoyable moment of DA and yes, Maggie Smith gets the BEST lines. I LOVE her character. I want to slap Edith silly. Hmm interesting theory that Mrs Bates, our timid little Anna did away with Green...which he deserved. I really love Cora and right now I'm angry at Lord Grantham for his petulant behavior but I guess times were different then. I do wish there was a certain amount of decorum left in modern days. I imagine the Royal Brits still practice a fair amount, but in the US, we're lucky just to sit for dinner. Anyway, my thoughts and pleasures...

I just finished season 4 this weekend. I'm so happy to hear that it's getting better in season 5. I agree exbrnxgrl - season 4 was a bit boring. I'll start season 5 next weekend. Can't wait!! I enjoy most of the characters but I love Maggie Smith. She always makes me smile.
-
So what exactly was "the thing" (contraceptive device). Diaphragm? In the 1920's?
-
My guess is a diaphragm given the size but at first I thought condom when Anna went to purchase it.
-
Not that it matters, but here's an interesting link: to birth control devices in that era.
-
Wow, so you really think Anna did it? I don't remember, was she also away from DA that day? Interesting theory.
-
I found and paid to watch The Manners of Downton Abbey on Amazon. Cost $2.99 and was well-worth the price. It gives historical perspective and explains so many of the shows/characters nuances which I think may enhance your viewing enjoyment. What I would give to play a cast member either upstairs or down.
-
OOPS!!! Sorry, ladies, I mean to say I think MRS HUGHES is the one who did that horrible Mr Green in.
-
Mrs Hughes, well that's worth consideration!
-
Yep. Mrs. Hughes is another frontrunner. Time will tell.
NRed, I guess we're neighbors; my office is in Brattleboro. Greetings from across the river!
-
2222 I only found downton abbey at the beginning of the New Year. I was able to catch up a bit by reading the synopsis of each episode on Wikipedia
-
Mrs. Hughes! Wow, what a thought. She is cool as a cucumber. I bet she could have pulled it off. Do you think Lady Edith's lover will ever resurface? Surely someone will find out that Marigold is her child.
-
You can get The Manners of Downton Abbey and all of the Season 5 episodes for free on pbs.org. (I just finished Season 4 on disc and am ready for Season 5, so I checked out the website tonight.) Thanks for the recommendation, Amy.
-
auntinance, I at first thought Lady Mary used a condom, but now question it after reading AmyQs link. Perhaps it was a diaphragm since she had a book and it may have explained the proper way to use it. It never occurred to me that it's gonna get Anna in trouble until mamabees suggestion on this thread came up, but it sounds about right!
And even Cora may be responsible for Mr. Green, yes, a possibility.
The banter between the Dowager and Isobel is THEE best.
I also wonder what the story behind Edith's lover is, I think at some point he will return right about the time to make all things much more complicated, of course.
I feel sorry for Robert, he is so out of touch with absolutely everything. In the first episode this season, he was talking to Cora saying he knew his mother, the Dowager, would be perfectly pleased if Isobel raised her social status by marrying a wealthy man, and Cora got a look on her face like, "wow, he doesn't have a clue what women are really like, even his own mother." The look was priceless. Because you know the Dowager doesn't want that at all, lol
-
Wow, Cora??? MrsM, you are so naughty. LOL I love Cora and nothing would give me more delight than if she was the punisher of Mr. Green. I didn't much care for the story line that caused Mr. Bates to be in prison regarding the death of his first wife and it was hard for me to feel any sympathy for anyone except Anna. So having someone else on trial would be more interesting since I would probably root for the prosecution if it was Mr. Bates.
I really like Edith and find it so comforting that today's women do not have to live a life in the shadows.

My sister-in-law just posted the following video to my facebook page, tho some of you may have already seen it. It's about 9 minutes long. Any Downton fan will get a kick out of it....I'm hoping the link I post works.
-
Okay, I watched the link, and it does break the video up into part one and part two, just keep watching when it says it's done with part one, it will go right into part two.
-
What a hoot! I absolutely adored it!
-
Rats, got the video, no sound....
-
Thank you , divine! What a good laugh. All the actors were spot on, even with the mostunorthodox Downton dialogue. I loved Thomas presenting the contract for his true terms of employment.
-
I loved the Dowager Countess waving George over to her calling out to him, "Lord Hollywood!"
-
That was hilarious. Glad my DH was not at home otherwise he would have had me locked up for lunacy I was laughing so hard. Thanks Ms. Divine. Made a very nasty (rainy cold) evening much brighter.
-
thank you, that was a scream!
-
That was a scream! How I love the fact that the cast can mock themselves. I loved it. Thanks for sharing

I just had a chance to look at this. It is hilarious despite the title.

BooHoo this week's episode is the last for the year. Not sure what comes on next but have read that Mr. Selfridge returns March 29.
Found some more PBS stuff but too tired to check them out tonight. Will see if they are worthy tomorrow.
Edited to add: Looks like Call the Midwife also premieres that same night March 29
