I remember the peter pan collars and the neck scarves and the circle pins.  I'm eading a book that just mentioned Blue Grass cologne.  My mother wore that - probably before I started saving my pennies for Evening In Paris.  Eventually she switched to Arpege.  My grandmother wore White Shoulders.

I hate White Shoulder too, and I had a granny & several friends who loved it.

Remember Jungle Gardenia? Man that was some powerful stuff too. I actually kind of liked it if you could figure out a way to just put on the faintest trace of it.

Do you remember the scene from "Broadcast News"? Holly Hunter demonstrates spraying perfume and walking thru the mist. Might be the only way to get minimal effective amount on. I wish I could find a good gardenia perfume.

luvmygoats, ever heard of The Perfumed Court? You can order all kinds of perfume samples, samplers & decants. It is addictive. I always fall in love with one of the murderously expensive samples...

No I haven't. Guess you have ordered from there. Thanks. There used to be a couple of perfume shops in Ft. Worth. Not sure if they are still there. One was downtown Sundance Square. Pretty sure it's not there anymore. I think the one on SW Blvd is still there. Do you know of any in Dallas or Mid Cities/Irving area? Used to get pretty good deals at Ulta but they've outpriced me.

Luv - I spent several hours one evening researching Gardenia perfume on line.  It was sure an education.  And prices way above my pocketbook.

Luv, I don't know of anyplace in Dallas. Every once in a while I find a good deal on something at Ross or Marshalls. The place in Ft. Worth might be Parfumelle. I can find stuff they carry less expensively elsewhere lots of the time. Sometimes good deals on Amazon or Ebay.

Onco, I think my change was hormonal. Going through perimenopause (okay, I had ovarian cancer at the time too) I developed a real aversion to perfumed stuff. I had to give liquid Tide to my sister because I couldn't stand the way my clothes smelled. Ditto most fabric softener. I loved and wore Clinique Aromatics for years and can't handle it anymore. Getting on the elevator with someone with strong perfume now just about does me in. It's like morning sickness in reverse or something...

Yup - I'm only using ALL unscented for washing and Bounce unscented in the dryer.  And I quit using perfume for a long time.  Finally have gotten back to my old standard - Oscar de la Renta - but not very often.

Oh man, I so agree about fragrance bothering me since beginning exemestane. I believe the aromtase inhibitor messed with my sense of smell (not in a good way) cause all smells are magnified big time. Could also be cause I quit smoking 18 months ago too...anyway, can only wear body spray now and I used to love my perfume. Wearing a lighter scent or just using the lotion is all I can handle these days. I also use unscented detergents etc.

April, I looked up those collars and I think we wore them with our school uniforms. I didn't know what they were called though. I'll have to dig out an old picture to compare.

I detest all perfume. My Mother used to wear Jean Nate and boy was it awful. I think that turned me off to perfume at a young age. I do scented body lotion though.

    luvmygoats,

Love gardenia scents.  Elizabeth Taylor's is my fav.  I also have to admit that I still wear White Shoulders.  Sorry ladies!

I remember that we wore peter pan collars with our collarless sweaters. (Dyes to match, no less to our skirts)  I could never get the collar to stay in place.  Anyone remember polishing their white and black saddle oxfords and the layers and layers of white polish needed to cover up the scuffs.  And lastly, does anyone remember when mini-skirts first emerged and we had to roll up the waistband of our skirts because Mom wouldn't let us wear anything over the knee??

Yes, I remember peter pan collars.  I bet almost every high school senior picture in the 50's the girls were wearing a pull over sweater with a pp collar peeking out.  Senior pictures today are so creative and fun.  And saddle shoes could be worn with skirts and sweaters in the 50"s, but don't make the mistake of wearing saddles with a dress.  Oh yes, polish those suckers every night.

My teenage DGD has about 10 pairs of shoes in her current size.  But so do her parents.  I remember having 2 pairs:  those saddles and a slip-on pair.

How about wearing your boyfriend's sports ring tied on the small silk scarf we'd wear around our necks?  Poodle skirts?  Pop beads necklaces?    Fun stuff to think about, but I would NEVER want to be a teenager again.

I never had a steady boyfriend but those who did at my school wound string around & around the inside band of their boyfriend's ring and then painted many coats of nail polish so they could wear the ring on their fingers.  We didn't have sports rings, only class rings.

Jan, same here with the shoes. I think I owned three pair at any one time.

MinusTwo, we had class rings too. What we did was wear  our small ring over the boyfriend's very large one so we wore two on the same finger and our class ring held theirs on our finger..or we wore it on a chain around our neck if we did not yet get our own class ring (too young - did not get it until Junior year) HA!

I remember wearing penny loafers more than saddle shoes as I graduated HS in 1973. By the time I graduated, we were wearing tie dye and moccasins and letting our hair frizz out like Janis Joplin. I used to braid it when wet and then let it dry overnight and then it would be poofy and frizzy. I wore a headband. That was after ironing my hair to make it straighter the year before...LOL The times they are a changin, no? (Bob Dylan of course)

Oh slow - I remember.  Onco - it is a perpetual motion "machine".  Once you give it a tap to start, it just keeps going up & down.

Onco, sorry for the delay....I've been off the boards for a bit. Yes, it takes water into its head. That helps to keep the motion going. I had one when I was a kid and was always fascinated by the way it worked. I think it was called the "drinking bird". I purchased one for my kids when they were young.

Yup, I do! He got suspended for telling all the little kids watching the show to go in Mommy's pocketbook and send him the green paper things in her wallet. Some kids sent him MONEY! Also, he said other things all of the time that got him in trouble with his producers..lol. Loved that show. It was WAY cool and very ahead of its time. He was somethin else..lol
