We had desks like the second picture throughout both elementary and high school.  They were so uncomfortable!

I remember both the desks and the "Safeties" only we called them "Patrol Boys" cause they were all boys and then all of a sudden when I was in 7th grade, they had Patrol Boys AND Patrol Girls! Of course, by then, I wouldn't be caught dead doing that job. They were definitely mostly "crossing guards" at our school and they had no authority beyond that. They were supervised by and actual crossing guard who stood in the middle of the intersection directing traffic and the kids stood on the corners and held you back with their hand and then let you "cross the street" when they were given the signal from the crossing guard! Quite the coup if you were chosen I guess and they were all 5th and 6th graders..you had to be at least 11 years old. Dang, that was some walk down memory lane!!Loopy

I remember the Jr. high desk! I was always so concious of bending over to get my books. We wore uniforms, and I was afraid my skirt would ride up and expose my undies!!

Me too Melissa! I loved the cartoon. I seem to recall my Gumby had bite marks.

Yes, I remember them.  What kind of rubber stuff were they made from?  My kids chewed on them when they were little.  Don't want to go there.

I don't know, but I'm sure it wasn't good for us. Probably filled with toxic chemicals.

Oh gosh guys, when you're from Texas where the bugs are as big as dinosaurs you believe in better living through chemicals. Still do. None of that sissy organic stuff-zap 'em all.

Anyone remember Emily Litella??? I loved this character on SNL.

    image

She was hard of hearing and would present opposing viewpoints on different topics. Topics like "endangered species" - she would hear it as "endangered feces", and would go on and on about the topic as she heard it. When corrected at the end she would say, "oh, never mind!" I think she was my favorite character.

Looking back....to about a week ago.  DH and I were on our way to UCLA by way of Sunset Blvd in Hollywood.  We always see people who are very "different."  The traffic is heavy and we manage to stop at every light so walkers seem to travel as fast as we do in a car.  We dodge tour buses, motorcycles, and just plain bad drivers.  It always reminds us why we moved to the mountains.

Well, last week I noticed a woman with very short hair walking quickly on the sidewalk.  Of course I instantly think "chemo haircut."  Oh, and she's pulling a small suitcase, maybe going to the doctor?   Whoa!  She is completely topless.  Bobbing and swaying,  looking straight ahead.  A tour bus next to us, a city bus in front of us, and walkers galore.  This went on for several blocks, and I couldn't keep my eyes off her.  Then she crossed the street in front of us, which totally distracted my DH.  Her breasts were young and perky and didn't look like they had any surgical scaring.

I still think about her and wonder what her story is.  I chuckle and worry about her all in the same breath.  The Sunset Strip.

You can still get Gumby & Pokey through the Vermont Country Store catalog.  I sent a set to my 44 year old son a couple of years ago to remind him.  That catalog has so many things from our past.

Thanks for all the memories ladies.

Simon Sez!  Yes that is a fun memory from childhood.  More recently I taught my foreign born high school students how to play that game.  I think we played it on some Fridays when we needed a break from the pressure of the week.  If I scratched my head I might be able to justify the activity, like maybe a lesson in American culture.  Administrators never visited my classes,  so I took advantage of that freedom.  Do kids still play Simon Sez?      Jan

Once upon a summertime, just a dream from yesterday, a boy and his magic golden flute, heard a boat from off the bay.
"Come and play with me, Jimmy, come and play with me.
And I will take you on a trip far across the sea."

    Loved H.R. Puff N Stuff!!

I've heard of kick the can, but never played it myself.

I still play Simon Sez with the kids in our family when we go camping. Same with the other games.

My dad used to talk about kick the can. We used to play Dodge ball a lot. I am 59 so I remember a lot of these games. Also, hopscotch and rollerskating with the skates that had 4 wheels and a key!  Also, duck, duck goose and musical chairs!

I'm 51 and played dodge ball too.

My Mom talked about kick the can.

I was never very good at Duck, Duck Goose or Musical Chairs.

Guess "slow" is a good name for me!!

Slow, PeterPan collared blouses were big in the 1960's and they were lovely. Kind of rounded and soft instead of pointy and sharp. Everyone wore them with skirts and of course, saddle shoes or penney loafers! Gosh, it seems like a million years ago that I was wearing these clothes with a ton of aqua net in my hair (which I only did for a short time cause I hated teasing my hair and spraying so I went with ironing and long and straight!)

It seems like overnight from the above we went to bellbottms, tie-dye and moccasins! LOL
