Fierce:  She is a sulphur-crested triton cockatoo from New Guinea.  They should never be in captivity, we rescued her 8 years ago.  We have her "free" as much as possible, but in our climate, its limited to the summer months.  She is out with us in our home as well.  She was captured in New Guinea in 1974 for a pet store in Canada.  She went through a number of owners, but her name remained Blanche so we were able to track her history.  The hummers "buzz" her in the summer and it really makes her mad, but they are so fast that she cannot do much about it.  I would love to get that on video as it is as funny as anything I have seen on youtube.

I love all these pictures of birds in the wild where they should be.  You guys have motivated me to try to photograph our birds this summer.  We have a lot of eagles and pelicans.  They are big and should be easier than the hummers to catch on camera :)

No I'm not. My brother sent me a very early digital camera right before I was house bound for almost two years with all my BC and treatment with all the stuff. So I taught myself computers digital cameras and genealogy. So now I have better cameras but not the SLR. kind . And I can walk a bit so I am making use of it. And I am having fun.

Lisa, re striped head, could be a white crowned sparrow. It's a little hard to tell with the light.

Re your birds and watching perch: jealous!

SoCal-I think Nance is correct about the white crowned sparrow. It could be a gold crown sparrow. A little tricky with the lighting. Here is a pic of what I believe is a gold crown sparrow, not very good lighting either.

    Gold crown sparrow

    Sparrow .....I think by molizard

Immature(or 1st year) White crown sparrow. I had an extremely knowledgeable friend help me ID these 2 a couple of years back. This was before I dropped my camera(ouch!)

The Hooded orioles(female pictured on your h-bird feeder) were slow to arrive in my yard. Perhaps because of the drought. But they are here now!

Hi, I just happened on this thread - LOVE all the beautiful bird pics! Oh how I envy you, Lisa! Your backyard looks like heaven to me. I live in Minnesota and this has been the longest winter ever. I still have snow in my yard and we just had what I hope was our final snowstorm of the season a few days ago!

Every now and then I can hear birds if I sit close to the window. Robins came back at least a couple weeks ago. I haven't seen any others at all. We live in a medium-sized city but it's kind of nice because there is a small river that runs by our backyard (we are high enough so it doesn't flood!). In the past, I haven't done a lot of bird watching at home, but we love to when we're up north at our lake cabin. There we have a porch and hang feeders right in front of the windows, so that's pretty convenient for bird watching. Here at home for some reason I've never been serious about setting up any kind of birdhouses or feeding trays. Now that I'm not working and am still kind of in recovery mode I'll have to start - you have all inspired me!

    Welcome!

We only have suet feeders in the Winter and hummingbird feeder in the Summer, but seed feeders all year.
