How vain are you?

All your grandparents were gorgeous! I would have to figure out how to scan pictures to put mine in. I have one from 1900 of my dad's young parents, with their first of eight, babies. They had my dad, #8, in their 40's. Not any pictures on my mom's side that I still have.
-
If you walked into a cemetery office and the chick behind the counter had a rack exposed like a porn star, trust me, you'd notice!! There are certain industries in which personal modesty is for the respect of the clients coming in and not for yourself.
Momine, that is a VERY sexy picture!!! It's quite evident what those two will be doing later (or when her cigarette is finished...hmm, maybe this is the "after"shot? No, silly me, he's still pawing at her!) And as for yours Mel...the classic doctor/nurse couple?? Put a pitchfork in his hand and it's the American Dream.
-
Love the photos! What great-looking grandparents! Momine, I agree, yours look very naughty. Melissa, I though of the "Pearl Harbour" film when I saw yours.
TwinMamaHeather... Snark? What snark?
Actually, I did start the thread to have fun with beauty, then I realised that I just wanted to have fun with everything. Thankfully, the thread has attracted like-minded people who have well-developed senses of the ridiculous and admittedly irreverent senses of humour. Snark is merely a welcome by-product.
I found some Maybelline "Age Erase" under-eye concealer at Shopper's Drugmart yesterday. Tried it this morning. BAZINGA!!! What a FABULOUS product! Also - to my neverending delight - I found 10 denier pantyhose in nude WITH BLACK FRENCH SEAMS AND CUBAN HEELS. At the PHARMACY. $7.99 a pair, just a dollar less than my regular ho-hum pantyhose. BOOM BABY.
Yes, I'm shouting...
-
TwinMamaHeather - I have used up a jar of Erase Paste, I mix with a little moisturizer. I also have the Maybelline Age Erase and like it too.
Love the pictures.
Selena - what are Cuban Heels in pantyhose?
-
Technically speaking, mine have "havana" heels...
-
Selena, learn something new every day!
-
TMH - snark.....keeps the world goin' round
Gotta go look for erase paste - maybe I should try some moisturizer under the maybelline wandy thing?
Barbe 0 thanks for the explanation. My iron level is fine, so it's not that. Speaking of anemia, did everybody ( who is also old:) kow that as we age, our bodies are less able to absorb ( not sure if that's the right word) Vit B12, and I now take a LOT extra during the day - the little thingies you put under your tongue ( begins with M, most absorbable VitB12 form) - think I do have more energy. It's water soluble, so you pee out the extra.
Pantyhose? Does anyone really still wear them? YIKES - I have a theory, maybe I should check it with larry, but I think the MAN ( it had to be a man) who invented panty hose is the same MAN ( had to be a man) who invented mammograms. Seriously, this is not snark, well, not too much, who but a man would have come up with Squoosh as hard as you can & take a pic.
-
Yeah, had to be a man for both. I said for about 5-6 years that when a man allows his penis to get squashed I'd go for a Mamo. Forgot one thing. They don't get cancer there. Now I don't have anything to do a Mamo with.
-
It was also a MAN who invented the cabinet-over-the-refrigerator. I mean, seriously? It's utterly useless!
And, yes, I still wear hosiery. I love lingerie: corsets, stockings, garter belts, , balconette bras, slips, chemises, etc. I love pretty matching sets in lace of all colours. I love satin peignoirs and silk pajamas. And Japanese-style embroidered kimonos.
When I first met my honey, he was a product manager for a women's lingerie company; not the riske stuff, but the everyday stuff that real women wear. They used to carry a line of washable silk underwear that I loved and a line called "Marilyn" that had pieces reminiscent of the glamourous fifties; full-bottomed pants, long-line bras, lounging pajamas, l. I fit the samples (34B, M) and, every year when the new samples would come in, I would get the previous season's samples. I had teddies, petal-pants, camisoles, boy-shorts, you-name-it. [Mind you, the downside of samples is that they are not well made and I was always reinforcing seams.] That's how I got spoiled into thinking that bras and pants have to match.
Nowadays he works in men's fashion - primarily ties and ascots - so, not as much fun for me, but he still buys all my lingerie.
-
Selena - who knew there were different seams for hose? Right Yorkie the things we learn. Hmm - where can I practice that knowledge or astound with it? Love that your honey was a lingerie man. Just one question - how high do you have to set your heat to wear that stuff or do you generate your own heat?
Sunny - I bought Erase Paste at Ulta. Bet Sephora would sell it - a Benefit product. I still wear pantyhose or tights to church. Not that pants are frowned on or apropos but I rarely find any that fit right. I have one pair of black pants nice enough to wear there. Also have trouble justifying expense of much more with my lifestyle. Also I have the world's ugliest legs - never had pretty skin even as a youngun. I have a couple pair of the capri/cropped pants for summer - would not be caught dead in shorts out of house. Well, when we go to OK 2x/year esp. in Sept. might be nec. to not fall over dead in heat stroke but otherwise NO and these are old friends all my age or older.
-
selena - garter belts, stockings, not as torturous as panty hose - I HATED THEM. Haven't worn a dress in years - Flax Linen Floods in spring, summer, jersey knits the rest of the year. Elastic waists, jersey tops, know I have an iron, but couldn't tell ya where it is. But then, I live in a very rural area, and don't go out, except to art classes - LOVE IT. When I read Thoreau's Walden in 9th grade, I knew ( eventually) how I wanted to live. NOW I AM. Well, lots of lovely, interesting people in this part of MA, but still, I have my own little "Walden" sans pond. Enough art supplies to last several life times...soft pastels my current passion.
Anybody ever seen the pastel work of Wolf Kahn. DIVINE.
BTW- we're having a blizzard, total white out. YEAH!!!!
-
The last time I wore hose was, well, only 4 months ago, when DH was given an award for academic research at his university. Before that it was 2207 at my mom's funeral. I tend to wear knee highs with pants or long skirts. My spinal/nerve issues are such that I cannot bend down and struggle with hose any more. Maybe that will get better, I hope, as I am doing intensive physical therapy right now.
-
Selena, the Pearl Harbor film was about right. He was with an evacuation hospital ship unit (Bougainville, all over the place.) I have a picture someplace of them operating in an underground bunker. My mom didn't see him until she was almost three.
Since you're a history fan, here's an article:
-
Oh wow! I remember my Mother wearing those stockings and looking sensational. I have worn seams on occasion, to events, remember the Lady Di version with the tiny bow at the ankle?
Mellissa, great photo of your Grandparents too!
-
Melissa, your grandparents are so handsome -- they look like the All-American couple! And Momine, agree about your grandparents -- totally naughty. Now I see where you must get it from. Although right now you seem to be rocking a 'butter would not melt in my mouth' vibe.. 'Oh, I am Momine, I do not know the meaning of the word 'snark'...'
Sunflowers, I am totally jealous of your Walden life. How is your white-out? Hi M! Your rainbows are all over the house at the moment
Selena, you make me pee with delight with your happiness at finding special panty hose. And then the helpful diagram.
-
Hi Bobo, so glad I could give you rainbows! Enjoy!
-
Snark..I'm here to tell you, you've never HEARD snark until you've worked for a divorce lawyer. On the bright side, it's like watching your own private soap opera every day.
-
LOVE the heels in pantyhose!! I did not know about them either! I would say I was sheltered here in Canada, but Selena lives near me so I can't plead that. I don't wear pantyhose anymore because of bulges in the backs of my legs. Went to a specialist who does veins, but he said they looked like tumours. I walked out.
I do wear patterned tights (black so far). LOVE them!! They make me feel girly. They seem to fit looser than pantyhose as they are easier to pull up but I still have to sit down or lean against a wall. It's been tough in some bathrooms and I've almost started to cry, but I get it done.
Anyone else cry in a change-room because they can't get something off (NOT because they looked in the mirror)? I've had to text my DH to help me...sigh. I still have restrictions on my left arm (SNB) from over 5 years ago. Normally I can get around it, but if I try on something without any stretch I pretty much need assistance removing the garment.
My DH used to buy me lingerie before my DBMX.....never since. Here I am the night before my surgery in 2008 showing me "donating" my useless items.....
-
Pantyhose. Last time I wore those torture devices was DDs wedding, 10 years ago, in April, in Florida. Think hot and humid. I'd gone to ladies room, and could NOT get the suckers back up. Tried and tried till I broke a nail. That pissed me off. So they came off and went in the trash. Did the rest of the evening with nothing under my dress, last time for pantyhose, ever!
-
bobogirl,
I may be going out on a limb here, but momine might not have heard the term snark as it is rather newish slang. Momine is not a native English speaker (though her English is amazing) nor does she live in the US.

oh if you ever find the picture of operating in an underground bunker send it or PM me and attach it- I would love to have a copy of that. I collect all sorts of historical medical and nursing "artifacts" I have a great WWII nurse uniform and cape on dressmaker dummies for decoration and a lot of other pieces.
-
snark= this thread LOL. When you send a snarky email I refer to that as a snark-o-gram. I actually like hose- I know I am a child of the 60s and my daughter would not be caught dead in hose but still hates her legs- I think they accentuate the positive and tone down the negative. I also really like textured/patterned tights and such too. I am always cold so another reason for liking hose is your legs are warmer LOL.
Momine- I love that picture of your grandparents- it looks like something from a movie. People dressed a lot less casually and clothes were much better made too.
-
Caryn, that was kind of you, but I am old friends with Mr. Snark
-
Wyo, no kidding about the well-made clothes and more "proper" dressing, for better and worse. As kids, we would always ask grandpa (the one in the picture) how old his suit was (whatever suit he was wearing). He would make a show of looking in the lining, where his tailor embroidered the year the suit was made. He had suits that were decades old. He always wore a suit when working and going out, tux for more formal occasions (even at home, like New Year's and grandma's birthday party). His "casual" wear consisted of neatly pressed jeans (I remember when he got the first pair and thought it was quite daring) with an oxford shirt, ascot and sport coat, and loafers, of course.
-
WYO, here's the bunker hospital on Bougainville
-
WYO, here's where they were setting up a hospital in a 1587 Spanish Church in San Marcus in the Phillipines. They had to scrape 7truckloads of bat guano off the floor to make it habitable
-
My grandfather died in his 90's and I NEVER saw him in jeans!! That would have been way-cool!! He worked in a mine or something like that and always wore common work pants I guess you'd call them.
Scraping that guano was probably worse than living with it!! It's the dust-bourne particles that are especially dangerous for humans as we inhale them. You gotta wonder how many of those patients and nurses "made it"....?
-
Well, Barbe, since Granddad lived to 98 and was one of the ones doing the scraping and had no respiratory problems I guess they did fine.
-
My Dad has never worn a pair of shorts.
-
barbe - smiled at your picture. I used to wear Olga Minimizer underwires ( I had large, pendulous "knockers") and after while recovering from BLM, I cut out all the underwires, and saved them, threw the other stuff away. Still haven't used all the underwires, but it makes an interesting mobile ;-) Painted, all colors acrylic, beads hanging, glitter paint. Celebration.
Weather report, there is a roof on the basement part of this little cabin, which extends out past the main room windows, so when the roof gets covered with SNOW, and it's windy, as it is now, the SNOW is up to the MIDDLE of the main room windows. Tee, hee...and snow drifted up against glass door which opens OUT ( main wooden door opens in) so it's wedged closed. THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT. I love it. When the snow plow person comes to plow, he'll shovel the snow from the door so I can get out. Not a danger, cuz in emergency I could always open a window and get out. Literally a winter wonderland, and blessed to be living a Saturday Life ( which is what we all call being happily retired) plenty of art supplies, hundreds of books ( literally) and electricity, LIFE IS GOOD. Too much drifting to say how much snow, but all the stones walls on the property are covered. JOY. Life in the hilltowns of western MA.
