ok, I surrender. I have been trying to link pix from photobucket without success. Direction are not clear or easy. Why can't bco have a direct link to my computer pix like Facebook has?

Bronx, copy the picture URL, then click on the little picture icon in the tool bar here. Paste in the URL and click "insert."

Part of my vintage/antique purse collection.

Well, the link works but I was trying to put the image directly on bco. I couldn't get that to work. Purses are from the late 1800's to the late 1950's, with the exception of the black and silver minaudière (top right) which is contemporary. It is significant because it's the purse that started my fascination with mesh purses. The German silver purse hanging from the glass jar is a chatelaine purse, complete with monogrammed clip. Current travel has curtailed my purchasing, but I'm always looking. Fantastic, portable works of art.  Caryn

    Thank you.  They are lovely.

It's funny what attracts our attention, when, somehow, we are susceptible and willing to act on impulse. Those impulse acquisitions occasionally change the course of people's lives, frequently, they represent a time when we were ready to act on impulse, just because we hadn't for a long time for many reasons, often husbands, children, work.

Caryn, I do love those also. I have to admit that in addition to being vain, I am very practical. For me a purse is to transport every little thing I might need while going from place to place. Gotta have areas for cell phone, wallet, comb, lipstick and planner. So I go less for looks (within limits) and more for easily accessible pockets and enough space to stuff it all inside.

    yorkiemom and kayb,

I rarely use them because although I only buy those that are in excellent condition, they are still antiques. We did use several at my dd's wedding, from the late '40's-early '50's and I took a small one on my last cruise for formal nights. Of course, when they were made, women rarely carried more than a lipstick, compact and some mad money. I do have one (not pictured) from circa 1960 that's much larger and is very structured which I have also used. For the most part, they are simply a feast for the eyes!

Yes, I do like to imagine where they might have been. The chatelaine purse with a clip has ES monogrammed on it. Who was ES? Where did she live? What was her life like? I have another that I bought from a woman who was liquidating her aunt's estate. She mailed it to me with a photo of her aunt (colorized) taken in 1929. Her aunt was a teacher too!

I think I can remember seeing purses like this at garage sales back in the 70s but not in a long time.

LOVE vintage purses and used to buy and sell them on ebay!!

As for thighs that rub and summer (I DO have that problem) you really must try PROPER (not joke ones) women's boxers or boy-cut underwear. The spandex-y ones are just too "sweaty" but can really slim your shape by not allowing "panty lines".

I only have one of my grandmother's: a small, needlepoint purse with a brass clasp.  My mother has more and everytime I see them, I'm flooded with memories.

Ex....beautiful treasures and so beatifully displayed.  I am not a collector but I admire people who collect things and keep them so nicely for the future.  Without people like you, there would be no 7 wonders of the world.

Did a bit of further looking at vintage purses online after work today. I had a huge selection and once sold 17 to one buyer from the US!! That was my biggest sale of them, but I'm kind of shocked to see how much the prices have dropped! I didn't sell a purse for under $100 and these seem really low. I think they are priceless.....

    http://www.etsy.com/ca/market/chatelaine_purse

I used to have them displayed in my quilt store and sold them there as well. One of my staff really coveted one of them and I'm sorry to say that it disappeared! I never did ask her as she was a wonderful employee otherwise and maybe it wasn't her after all, but she really wanted it for her daughter's prom. She could have borrowed it if she'd asked! I always love to imagine the love and sadness trapped within the purse and the smells and cocktails and cigarettes and flirting....ahhhh. The ones with the rings are for when you're dancing. A true chatelaine purse hangs on your neck and may have multiple pouches for various things like scissors, but I love them all. I am a purse pig and I think I've already admitted that pages ago.

    Whew. I am behind.

Momine, I believe you were picking a fight on another thread -- not with Eli -- but I am too tired to look up a quote from you.  You got steamed about something on another thread.  I remain jealous that you are in Athens.  You might as well tell me you are on a wonderful other planet.

Bronx, I am a Target girl all the way.  Cannot set foot in Walmart.  I send DLLP there.   It is completely hot here but I do not own a pair of shorts.  Have linen and hemp skirts -- some longer ones, actually, because I am hoping in the hot weather to get some kind of 'wind tunnel' going, but it never happens.

I see no problem with fillers.  I'd just make sure I did some 'boots on the ground' research first.  Agree about Botox.

In fact, anyone who is a bc survivor who does not get fillers has 'given up' and needs to be put in pro-plastic-surgery-improvement therapy!  (bullying -- fishing for trouble)

    Barbe,

I buy off of etsy and ebay. I never pay more than $100. For a mesh purse, except maybe a Mandalian in exceptional condition. ebay prices tend to be higher, some are just ridiculous, but I've gotten some nice ones from that source. I was never a collector but I simply became fascinated by metal mesh as a material for purses and the artistry too. I've never seen chatelaines hung from the neck, but rather pinned at the waist. The pin was attached to ones skirt/dress with the chains hanging down and various household tools attached to the chains. Will have to google chatelaines worn around the neck.

Caryn -- you are obviously an expert in this area, so I will ask your advice, and I believe this falls under the heading of vanity.  Will you tell me the best bag to get that is free of animal products?  I have a Vera Bradley bag now, and it is a bc fundraiser, but I hate it because it is not punk enough.  I am on the professional edge of punk.

    bobo,

My purse expertise is limited to vintage/antique mesh, but thanks for the compliment. Have you checked out some of the cross body bags designed for travel? Most of them are made from heavy duty fabrics and have an urban vibe. Bagallini is one brand that comes to mind. Good luck and I'm your girl when it comes to Edwardian mesh!

baggalini is a good choice- I have a major purse addiction but baggalini is great for the "professional edge of punk" to me.  You can pick nice urban-friendly colors and get plenty of zipper pouches, cross body straps even luggage and practical design for city/business & travel.  Cleaning is a breeze though the dark colors show no dirt anyway.  The inside of all their bags of any size/type have a nice contrasting "pop" of color and you can actually find things in them too. http://www.baggallini.com/

I always knew etsy as an artist's website to sell handmade stuff. Very impressed with how it's come along!!!

I use a cross-body bag when travelling or when I have to use my cane. I've never worried about animal products as leather is the byproduct of the food industry so it would be a throw-away otherwise if it wasn't used for clothing, furniture and other stuff. If we were hunting down cows for the leather I'd give it another think or two, but leather has been around for millions of years. Bobo, what are your concerns?

I just bought a cross-body Coach tote in black that I lllllooooooovvvvveeeee.  It holds everything: my wallet, my daytimer, my lunch, my shoes.  No more dragging half-a-dozen bags to work with all the stuff I need.  I found it - on clearance - for 85% off.  Vanity loves a good bargain.

    Happy

[Off to see how momine got provoked enough to steam...]

Good post by orac in his blog yesterday about Vitamin C therapy.
