For Informed People Using Alternative Treatments

I've been subscribing to The Townsend Letter.
They scrutinize many treatments and diet principles. This ketogenic diet has been getting a lot of attention.
-
another article of ketogenic diet...from canceractive.com i really love this website, provides an alternative view of cancer treatment. it also mentioned due to hormone fluctuate during the month/cycle, it's better to have surgery at the 2nd half of the cycle for a lower recurrence rate. it confirms the book i read "what your doctors might not tell you about BC" that natural progesterone is protective and during the 2nd half of the cycle, it's stronger.
-
CP, wow, that was very comprehensive. Glad to see all that info together in one pdf.
Lucy, thanks for the keto info. That was an interesting and informative interview. I'm keeping an eye on the developments with keto, but for now I'm not letting go of my carrots!
Thank you both!

Juneping, I remember reading that website before my surgery. I was researching about how I could build my immune system before surgery to prevent surgery induced metastasis. Building the immune system prior to surgery according to info I've read is supposedly necessary due to the fact that surgery and anesthesia temporarily suppress the NK (natural killer) cells that fight disease in the body.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6576593
-
light - there's one more if you want to compare. it also mentioned the killer cells and explain cancer cell have a tendency to spread if operation occurs and mets to bones. i can't grasp the whole concept completely though...

this site also suggest rainbow diet.
i am not gonna lie, sometimes eating is like a job to me...

RE: Flax and estrogen receptor positive cancer..... I do take flax.... what I've read makes sense - that the pseudo-estrogen in the flax attaches to estrogen receptors blocking your own estrogen. Anyone else care to weigh in?
-
Flavia, I have read back and forth on flax, and it all seems very confusing and contradictory. It also seems to depend, according to some sources, on your ER status AND whether you are on an AI, for example. For now I am skipping it, because I can't seem to find any definitive info one or the other.
-
Flaviarose, I agree w/ Momine here. I can't seem to get a consistent read on it either. Last article I read, I think it was on here somewhere, seemed to indicate that if there is no other estro in the body to compete for the receptors then lignans could potentially fuel ca but that didn't really make sense to me. Why would that be? Would the cancer cells so deprived of estro have more sensitive receptors? that it would be fueled by lignans? I guess, anything is possible. I would just like to understand how that could be, the mechanisms involved, etc. so that it does make sense. I take a very small amount of seeds and oil daily in my morning oats.
-
I have also read too many conflicting reports on Flax. I moved onto Hemp for now. I'll probably read something bad about that next!
-
juneping - thanks for the info on intergative doctors - I am looking into it!
-
I am trying to limit my exposure to xeno estrogens (changed soaps, shampoo, etc..) but I seriously can never find a natural deoderant that works all day for me. I might make my own. Anyone use a natural deoderent that actually works and doesn't cause skin issues??
-
Flav-Thanks for Essiac tea links.
The flax oil/seed intake is confusing. I take a tablespoon a day - I was taking cod liver oil - maybe I should switch back?
-
The reason why I switched was due to my vegan diet.
-
Hipz...I use Primal Pit....love the lemongrass!
-
Hjpz, here's a recipe for a natural deoderant/anti-perspirant. I initially started making it for my son who had to use clinical strength anti-perspirants, with which I was not comfortable. I was sure he'd end up with alzheimers because of all the aluminum. He has fairly sensitive skin and it doesn't irritate his, but then again, being a guy....
1/2 tsp pine resin
250 ml vodka (or just enough to cover the ingredients)
rind of 2 lemons, finely chopped
rind of 2 oranges, finely chopped
10 fresh bay leaves, finely chopped
3 tbsp fresh pine needles, finely chopped
3 tbsp fresh thyme leaves
2 tbsp glycerine
100 ml orange blossom water
1. Crush the pine resin in a pestle and mortar until you have a very fine powder. Pour over 1 tbsp of vodka and stir to dissolve. The mixture should form a thin paste. Add the chopped lemon and orange rind to the mortar and stir with a spoon to remove the last traces of sticky resin from the sides.
2. Place the resin mixture along with the bay leaves, pine needles and thyme in a sterilized mason jar. Add enough vodka to cover, then seal and leave in a dark place for 2 weeks to 1 month.
3. When ready, strain off the herbs through a muslin-lined sieve into a jug, and stir in the glycerine and orange blossom water. Pour into a 100 ml glass spray bottle.
USE: Do a 24-hour test on a small patch of skin before using. Shake well and apply every morning to underarms, feet, etc.
STORAGE: Keeps for up to 1 year in a cool, dry place.
-
Should add that orange blossom water is a little pricey (at least where I live), but it can also be used to make your own cleaning products (I especially like using it instead of lung-choking febreeze) and it can also be used for upset stomachs.
-
hjpz, I use a deodorant (apricot) from Jason. It does not eliminate sweat since it's not an antiperspirant, but I don't smell like sweat either. It's paraben, phthalate, propylene glycol, and aluminum free.
-
Thanks everyone for the deodorant info! AmyinMI - I am using a Jason deodorant right now and by the end of the day I start to smell (especially if I walk during lunch) - my husband is using the men's deodorant by Jason and he is also not a fan because it is so dry ( I do like the Jason shampoo btw). That is the problem with natural deodorant - some work great for some people and not for others!
Leggo - thanks so much for your recipe! I printed it out.
Jojo- I am checking into the kind you mentioned.
You ladies rock!
-
peacestrong - I am a vegetarian and like I said I switched to Hemp Seed (not oil) for my Omega 3. I noticed after I bought it that it is actually recommend as a good source of protein for vegetarians too so that is a plus!
-
The only deodorant that works for me is Trader Joes
-
hjpz (and anyone who may be interested) -- I have settled on an underarm regimen after trying a number of different products. I use a combination of products, both from the Lush store (they have an online store if you don't have a retail location I your area). I start with a powder called "greench" and then I layer it with a cake bar called T'eo. This combination works well with my chemistry; I have been stink-free even in the hit summer months. It doesn't do anything to prevent wetness, but after losing two lymph nodes, I intuitively feel that sweating is a good thing. At least it doesn't stink.
Two caveats -- the powder I use isn't talc-free, but I've done some reading and am not horribly concerned about it. Also, this might not work as well on some ... I think it depends on individual chemistry. I do recommend sticking with it a few weeks, because I recall there was an adjustment period.
-
do you have a remedy for anti perspiration? i don't really smell (as far as i know...) but i would like not to wet my clothes at the arm pits.
-
i've seen on "The People's Pharmacy" newspaper column that a lot of folks who have problems with antiperspirants have good luck with applying plain cheap (store brand is fine) milk of magnesia and letting it dry before dressing. All it is is a magnesium/water suspension.
-
thanks melissa!! i'll get a bottle.
-
Milk of Magnesia works very well. I tried it after surgery when nothing ( not even traditional deo/anti-persp) could keep the newfound stink away. I use it on my stinky pre-teen (who fights me on personal hygiene!) and it keeps her fresh for over 24 hrs. A veritable miracle, if you've spent time around stinky kids!
-
- I had ER+ tumors in one breast and have been taking 6 tbsp of Flaxseed oil (as part of my Flaxseed Oil/Cottage Cheese smoothie) daily since August 12th and that tumor is now gone and no new ones have appeared.
- I don't use any kind of deoderant/anti-perspant. My body odor went away within a few weeks after changing my diet.
- I get Essiac Tea from https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/search/search.php?utf8=%E2%9C%93&refine=y&keywords=essiac+tea I brew it myself to ensure freshness.
- I also drink a cup of Pau D'arco tea from Alvita or Traditional Medicinals once a week. Only once a week for me as I respond strongly to its detox affects.
- Hemp seeds are fantastic! Love them! I add them to my FO/CC smoothie. I also add them to my children's organic oatmeal.
-
when I went for radiation they told me not to use deodorant, so I stopped on both arms and discovered that I don't smell any more! maybe the menopause? At any rate, I've made home-made from coconut oil, arrowroot (or cornstarch) and baking soda. I can't say if it works, because most of the time I use nothing and don't smell..... don't sweat much either, maybe more in the summer with hot weather.... I've also added tea tree oil to the home made deodorant because sometimes in hot weather I have skin fungus under my arms... waiting for summer to try....
-
I must be weird. I stink if I don't use something for deodorant. Sometimes I will forget to put it on and I can normally smell myself by midday. That Milk of Magnesia thing is interesting.
-
Thanks all for posting these ideas about deodorant. where do you get the pine resin?
Since we're talking hygiene...I guess were on the general topic. I'd like to ask, (because I guess I might actually have a touch of that vanity thing myself). Does anyone take phytoceramide for skin firming and conditioning? Some ladies I was talking to about a Dr. Oz's show, which discussed it said it's some wonder supplement for the skin. I was reading reviews and researching it last night because I am interested in it. I wanted to see if there was any documented info about it's effect on bc. I have to read some more, but from what I read last night, the stuff is made from sweet potatoes and is said to have "antitumor action". Has anyone else done any research about this?
