How vain are you?

Melissa... I have needed reading glasses for, at least, fifteen years, but was too vain to wear them regularly. I'm very farsighted (as my late father would say my "arms aren't long enough") and wouldn't let anyone see me in them. Now, I have no choice; without them, I can't see anything within two feet. But I find that I still take them off to talk with someone, wait until they leave, then put them on again, LOL!
Momine... I find that - the more I learn - the more stuff there is that I don't know. It's scary how much we will never know compared to what we will learn! That's also a great buffer to being intellectually vain; one becomes humbled by what one will never know.
-
Elimar, love your post. And yes, you are vain. So am I for reaching out to you to say how thought provoking your post is. But on a less existential note....I did a double twirl at the mirror this morning and I must say, I am rockin the short chemo-do! And my new dark circle concealer, love it!

Mspharoah, isn't that Maybelline concealer great?i just hit under my eyes & red areas of my face then top with loose powder. No foundation.
-
I freely admit my prejudice. Stupid people annoy me. I don't care if they are white or purple. Being ignorant but amenable to education does not fall under that definition.
-
"I find that - the more I learn - the more stuff there is that I don't

learn! That's also a great buffer to being intellectually vain; one becomes humbled by what one will never know."Too true, Selena Wolf! I second that emotion.
MsPharoh, just doin' my job, ma'am. (That's a reference to what I put in my profile under occupation.)
-----------------------------
Don't get me started on the reading glasses. I vainly struggled not to need them, and then when I finally had to break down and get a pair, I chose ones that were conspicuously garish. That was my way of conceding defeat.
-
Elimar, you were the first to welcome me to the "club." My vanity was definitely at it's lowest point back then, but thanks to all the reassuring words and spirit of community I found on your thread and throughout the board, my natural vain state has come roaring back!
Thanks!
-
What a great bunch of women!
Welcome, Leah. A dear friend of mine just came back from taking her 13 year old about to be Bat Mitzvahed granddaughter on her first trip to Israel. She brought me back the "pebble" I requested, and said probably all the trees our respective grandmothers planted for our own birthdays are probably gone
BTW, love how you've described the "RIGHT" way for a good friend to share information. With understanding, compassion, and caring. Not much of which is found in those trying to put "the answer" on your plate ( but then, I'm the bully who knows a shortage of coffee beans is gonna really crimp the enema business)
Anyhooooooo...elimar - whatever vanity helps us get thru the day, and doesn't hurt anybody else, I'll try that one next.
MsPharoah - "rockin' the chemo-do" - YOU ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Betcha' look gorgeous - heck, works for charlize theron
MOMINE - from another thread on what to eat to....meant to say, you gotta get someone coming to visit you to stop first at Costco, and buy some of the almond butter they sell in HUGE plastic jars - very cheap compared to what is in most stores. Deeeeeelicious....has totally replaced peanut butter in my, ah, diet..( that last word is a snark, btw) - sign in my little kitchen, "stressed spelled backwards is desserts."
-
and if you can't get the almond butter at Costco and have a Sprouts, their roasted almond butter in the generic tubs is very good too. Spread on a low-carb tortilla with a sprinkle of kosher salt is one of my favorite "indulgent" breakfasts.
-
Melissa.....sadly I can't skip the foundation. (Sigh) Yes, I love the Age Rewind Dark Circle Concealer that was recommended on this thread. I am now a fan.
Best men's cologne is Abercrombie and Fitch "Woods". A man with that scent is just not safe near me. Grrrrr!

Always thought my dark circles were hereditary or caused by my allergies and eye rubbing. Then I found out it was age and my loss of collagen in the undereye area. Thirty pages on here, has the subject of PLASTIC SURGERY come up yet? I think that's uber-vanity. (Now don't start to rake coals onto me, because I'm not judging and not ruling it out for my own self either.) In an ageist society, how can one not try to offset the aging process? But each to their own lengths of doing it, right?
-
Selena, definitely. But when I say I am vain in this way, I mean more that I REALLY want to understand and that it is not unlike REALLY wanting to find that perfect pair of shoes for an outfit
-
I second elimar's excellent assessment: we are on to intellectual vanity for the moment. And I see our Momine is picking fights.
I love this thread.
However, Selena, I must tell you I find the talk of Jean Nate and Charlie very unkind and hurtful. So please stop all talk of body washes and 1970's perfumes. I am the vanity thought police.
Have not had any pot, but I still think I am funny
-
I reply to myself. I am actually trying to get my vanity back. I think that is one of the points of this thread. In fact, I was just debating whether or not to do my own pedicure, and then I stopped myself and thought, Absolutely not. You are going to have the best pedicure in town.
Elimar, is laser hair removal plastic surgery? After the very hurtful and unkind video of the British lady and waxing, I am thinking of switching over to laser hair removal.
-
Okay, I admit it. I have actually priced out getting a facial filler like Juvederm. Botox is out-of-the-question; it scares the crap outta me, but years of reading and researching have left me with that frown line between my eyebrows that I would LOVE to have filled out.
Just sayin'.
-
bobogirl, laughing so hard it's making me cough!
OK - plastic surgery, as requested, aren't we all eager to please. Don't care about the dark circles, tho I will get the Maybelline as soon as enuf of the snow melts so we can BEGIN to see the surface of the roads - BUT, it's about the eyelids. PLURAL. Eyelids. More than one, on each eye, which if you stretchy the skin together can almost cover the eyelashes ( which are LONG, speaking of vanity) - I wear rimless glasses, gut still, th LIDS.
Idea, I'm serious, I actually thought of this, and no elimar I wasn't smokin' anything, of breaking a toothpick to the right size, squeegying it into the corners of the glasses, and using the other end to prop up the eyelids. Ya think I might be ready for plastic surgery! It's the $$$$, damn, it's relly expensive, and I'm cheap.
Can a woman still be on the thread if she's more cheap than vain?
Also, I expect many of the posters/lurkers on this wonderful thread also have a JAWLINE. Just wait... ;-))))))))))
-
Can a woman still be on the thread if she's more cheap than vain?
If you see me here, then my answer has got to be yes.
I don't think of hair removal as plastic surgery, unless some skin is removed along with it. Yow!
Frown line between the eye? Yep. I smoothe mine out in a mirror and DO look younger and happier. Hmmm. I have a scar indent on my tummy and could do some preliminary experimentation with fillers on that before going straight for the face.
-
Once upon a time I got regular Botox injections around my spine for pain relief. Other than a runny nose, no sx. It's good for that, why not facial areas?
-
Sunflowers, the kind of eyelid problems you are talking about will sometimes qualify for medical necessity surgery because they compromise your vision if they keep you from opening your eyes wide enough.
-
:-) Melissa - I know, but they only cover the eyelashes if I pull on'em. Other that that, they are just there to make me look like I'm half asleep, or very tired. I do know a woman who "qualified" - and other women who have had "work" done, and some have that dreaded deer in the headlights look....so hard to tell how it's gonna' look.
-
I am ALWAYS looking for that perfect pair of shoes. I loved the movie "Why I Wore Lipstick To My Mastectomy" starring Sarah Chalke, especially the scene where she's shlumping her way to chemo in stilettos she can barely walk in because she's determined to tap into her "inner cleavage". Great scene. I get it completely. I feel lost without my 3" heels.
I, also, loved the scene where she and her chemo pals are sitting getting their infusions, flipping through fashion magazines and moaning at all the "hair porn". Yep, even when we're bald and tired, we're still trying to hang on to our vanity.
Which is why I still refuse to be seen without makeup and in shorts.
-
Bobo, I NEVER pick fights with Eli, because I would lose!
-
But we can push her buttons, can't we? Huh? Please?
-
aaaauuggghhhhheli's being "bullied" - OH, MY, OH, MY the sky is falling - tee, hee..."sell sky."
oh
-
Selena, no, not even that
Eli is good people. Seriously!
-
ok momine, I was joking, you know :0) about it all, think Selena had her tongue firmly in cheek too ;-)
-
Chilled 4711 in a small spray bottle during the Summer is nice.
Do y'all know there are perfume collector & review sites & you can order & buy lots of yummy samples? It gets addictive & expensive really fast...
-
I know, I know! But it is really fun...If you know you like, for example, amber based scents, you can order whole sets of different classic or modern perfumes samples that are variations on that theme. I started reading the reviews and then finding all kinds of things I wanted to try.
-
Back atcha, Momine! XOXO And thanks for allowing for my multiple personalities.
Don't sell your shares of sky just yet, Sunflowers.
I might "hold up a mirror" now and again, but you can be sure I am taking a look into it myself, no exemption.
-
I feel like my face has aged 10 years since my cancer diagnosis. I'd love to have a filler for the lines around my mouth, and those dimples at the corners of my mouth. Sometimes I pull up slightly at the sides of my face and I look so much younger! Maybe I need to wear a really tight ponytail?
-
MelissaDallas - my DH was a HS teacher for 33 years. He had that same sign in his classroom!

One of the only scents I can stand is Aveeno Baby Wash and Shampoo. Such a gentle, soothing, mild fragrance... I use it in the shower before I go to bed. It just relaxes me.
