Go for the cruise and enjoy yourself!! As long as you are healthy, have the money and the time off from work - you deserve to do what you want.

Go, go, go! I am feeling good right now and I so much want to travel! But I am needed at home (children) and we dont really have any extra money......so its not in the cards for me right now. But I am dreaming about how I can work *something* out. I'd even like to hop in my car and just drive and stop and see whatever catches my attention. Unfortunately that would still cost money, because I'm really not up for sleeping in my car. Plus it's too cold to camp and I wouldn't do that by myself anyway. So I say go fot it!

Attended my grandson's 5th birthday party Sunday dressed in our Super Hero shirts. It was such a happy, fun day!

Caryn - GO, GO, GO!!!  If you have the money and the time, definitely Go!  If your older daughter is upset, I would do what TheDivineMrs.M suggested and plan a special trip with her too!

Trish - great picture!  Looks like your grandson had a blast :)

Thanks for the kind comments! I've found that lately the most fun I have is spending time with my family, especially the grandchildren. They're the best medicine in the world! DH and I have talked about going on a cruise or on a trip in our motorhome, but I'm having a hard time getting really excited about that. I know I should, but I'm just content being home. That's what I do for fun.

    Hugs, Trish

Trish, great picture, thank you.. Your grandson is adorable!!

Well dear Caryn, as you are still trying to make up your mind, I have plans already set & in action.. Actually my DH&DS.. I planned a trip to Dubai for a week for them & they are leaving tomorrow midnight. This is my semester break present to DS. As my docs rejected any travelling for a while to me, I didn't want them to stay home with me.. Glad for DH, especially, he is working his brains out & with the added stress of my condition.. he definitely needs the break.

I am as much excited as DS, even though I'm not going. Guess this is called love :)

    hugs

Ebru - sorry you won't be going to Dubai.  You're right that it is LOVE to send your DS and DH off to have a wonderful time. If they're like you are to us, they will "take you along" with photos and Skype and phone calls.

    HUGS to All!

Took a CPR class yesterday . Hadn't done one in over a decade so it was a good thing. Even got to practice AED. Right now, I'm at a travel show listening to Samantha Brown from the Travel Channel.  She is a wonderful speaker. Also saw Rick Steves who was OK. Lots of vendor booths with good swag too.

When I was spending a whole lot more time on my HMO's campus and in their lovely hospital, I noticed a nice looking house and yard on the campus. It turns out it's a place called JW House, named after a teenager who wanted this house to be a legacy after his death (brain tumor). It is a beautiful house where families can stay when they have members being treated at the hospital. It can also be used for day respite, showers, meals etc.  Both dd's , adorable granddaughter and I volunteered to cook dinner for the house this past Sunday. We had a wonderful time.

Go, Caryn, and have fun!  I suddenly and uncharacteristically expressed a strong desire to go on a particular cruise in 2011.  We went, had a great time, and booked another one 6 months later.

No regrets and and looking forward to another adventure. It's time to put yourself high on the list, if not at the top.

Perhaps, there is something special you can do with or for your other dd that she would enjoy. Take your grandbaby for a night or weekend and send your dd and her partner to a 5 star hotel for a night or two  Or spend the day at a spa together while dad or a friend looks after the baby. Something she would especially enjoy.

Hi all.  So happy to have found this thread!  This week is my one year anniversary of my Stage IV dx.  After the initial shock abated a bit, we decided to stop saving as much (was hoping to buy the house we're renting), and have some fun.  We're trying to do something just for fun at least once a month.  In August, we went on a steam train ride and to the observatory for a five course dinner with matching wine with a "through the Milky Way" theme.  In September, we went to a nearby nature reserve several times, where a duck sat on my husband's lap and a kaka (native parrot) sat on my head.  In October, I went to Auckland on business and spent the weekend with my husband's family - great times at the beach!  I also went deep sea fishing and to a conference in Rotorua where the weather was stellar.  In November, we went to the Waikanae lagoons and watched the shags nesting and got to see some babies.  In December, we had friends over for Christmas and to the Royal A&P (agricultural and pastoral) Show (like a State Fair in the US).  In January, we went to the Cheetah Encounter at the Wellington Zoo and got to pet Charlie the cheetah.  It was magnificent; beyond description.  He meowed and purred for us and we got video of it (link below).  A pic of us with Charlie is attached - one of my friends captioned it for us.

We also went to the New Plymouth Festival of Lights and caught up with friends there.  One of them is an artist, and she gave me an amazing painting that is just full of joy.   We also went to the Horowhenua A&P show where I spent most of the day watching the sheep dog trials.

Assuming the weather holds, we're going to Kapiti Island later today.  It's a pest-free island and full of native New Zealand birds.

I also have lots of pictures of our fun times on my Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sparkleinlv/. Feel free to visit it - I put the pics up for people to enjoy.

I'm sad that I didn't get to meet Caryn when she was in NZ, but so happy she had a good trip here!  If anyone makes it to the Wellington area, let me know - happy to buy you a cuppa!

Loving seeing what others are doing for fun and so thrilled to have found this thread!

    Kind regards,
    Terre

    Terre, that's awesome!!!

Today I put my slap on, dressed up like the late Lady Diana (RIP) to go to the grocery store.. Parked in the handicapped space, a fellow ran towards my car as I calmly placed my handicapped sign in front of the mirror.. That was so cool!!! He phoned back his manager without even saying anything to me ;)

Well the handicapped should use the place provided for them so normal customers can find space for their cars, right? . I like using my official %80 handicapped report.. Well the lemon & the lemonade..

    Hugs

    Hey gals,

Here in Seattle, we've been on cloud 9 since winning the Super Bowl.  There was a HUGE parade downtown today and estimates are that somewhere between 700,000 - 1 million (!) fans attended.  I am so proud to live in Seattle and be part of the 12th Man!  Go Hawks!!

nancy, we live in "Steelers Country" and altho they weren't in contention for the Superbowl, my husband and I still watched the play-off games this year...it's the first time I paid attention to the Seahawks.  Something about them immediately jumped out at me (one reason: lime green shoes!) and I thought, these guys are going all the way.  I could just tell.  They were fierce and full of energy I hadn't seen in a football team lately.  So I was rooting for them at that point.  I loved that they won, since they never had before; they were the underdogs; Russell Wilson wasn't hyped up like so many other quarterbacks, he just got out there and got the job done and took the team to victory. What a blow-out. Oh, and it was the first time I ever heard of the 12th man.  It is an exciting time when your team wins the Superbowl and always great for your local economy.  That parade looks awesome.

Ha, ha, I just looked at the photo again and saw the lime green American flag...love it.

I am planning a quick trip to Phoenix and Sedona with my family in March. My twin boys who are in different colleges happen to have the same spring break this year so I'm taking advantage of it. I have never been to the Southwest and I'm really looking forward to it. We will also go to the Grand Canyon, or as one son calls it, "the large hole in the ground." I just hope I have the energy...

Thanks for the welcome!  And congrats to the Seahawks!  Mompsych - I love the southwest.  Lived in Vegas for years with the primary benefit being that it was so close to such beautiful places.  If you have time to go to Zion, I'd highly recommend it.  Same geology as the Grand Canyon, but you come in on the canyon floor and it just surrounds you. My fave place in the SW.

Ebru - love the grocery store story.  Fantastic!  And Susan - dog sledding!?!?!  I'm sure I can speak for many of us and say - we want pictures!

So yesterday, we went to Kapiti Island, which is a predator free island.  After a very bumpy and fast boat ride to the seal colony, we disembarked and walked through the bush to the lodge.  Several baby seals; they're really hard to see in the rocks, but very cute when you do spot them.  Saw a few native birds along the way, but it was early evening and not much activity.  We were greeted with wine and a fish and chips dinner at the lodge...as well as by weka and kaka (native birds).  The kaka is a native parrot and really really smart.  Of course, I'm smarter than a bird (yeah, right) and took my fish and chips to the outdoor table.  I knew the kaka like to steal the chips (french fries) and you're not to feed the birds, so I was guarding the chips.  The kaka came up behind me, jumped over my shoulder, landed on my boob, and stole my FISH!  He ate the batter and left most of the fish for the wekas.  It was pretty funny.  The kaka also landed in my husband's lap for a brief moment, which was pretty funny as well.  Here's the guilty party.

    image

And here's one of the weka:

Pretty cool to get to see native birds up close and personal.  You can go and stay overnight and do a night tour looking for kiwi (birds), but it's $600 for two.  Need to save my pennies!

kiwimom - love those bird pics! We are just going for a quick trip to Phoenix and Sedona (and the Grand Canyon) but everybody I know who has been to Zion says its amazingly beautiful.  I hope to get there eventually. It's certainly nice to have so,etching to look forward to - particularly after the cold and snow we have had this winter!

No doubt, Mompsych!  I grew up in Rapid City, SD, and don't miss the cold at all!  I love the Black Hills, but every time I get homesick, I see that the wind chill is -30 and I'm over it!

Just put up a new set of photos on Flickr - evolution of a monarch.  We have a swan plant in the planter on the porch and it's gone nuts this year, which is fantastic.  Generation after generation of monarchs already this morning.  So I've tried to photo document the evolution - from caterpillar through to butterfly.  If you're interested, it's at

    Ebru,

True, "Beginners" is not what we would call a laugh riot. You know what's been released recently, but why don't you also take a look at some classic old comedies like the inimitable "Some Like it Hot?"

It's the Olympics opening ceremony for us tonight. We have tix for a jazz show at the Kennedy Center at 9:30 but don't feel like dressing up and driving into town. This is not like us. Chalk it up to day-after-treatment blahs plus a real desire to see how over-the-top the ceremony will be. Watching sports is not really our thing, but we like parts of the Winter Olympics very much: skating, skiing, scenery. And we love to see the athletes enter the stadium in the Opening. It's always very moving to me--all that youth and promise and optimism on parade.

Save for baseball, I'm not a huge sports fan. However, when it comes to the Olympics, I am mesmerized by every event. Biathlon? Curling? Half Pipe! Yes, yes give it all to me. And after the Olympics, it's back reading as my main form of entertainer .
