oh, Ebru, I love your friend's likeness of you.  It is beautiful, as are you!!  I like a lot of sports .. . Was a phys. Ed. Major in college.  In high school I ran track, swam, and played basketball and volleyball.  Ticks me off that my lung condition leaves me so inactive!!  I mainly watch football and baseball but do love the Olympics!!

Ebru - I love the picture of you! Gorgeous :-)

Glenna - I was very active before my lung mets - this time of year I'd be out snowshoeing, cross country skiing in the backwoods, hiking or snowboarding. Now - nada. A walk outside (especially when it's about 10 degrees) knocks me out. It stinks!

I need to schedule more fun into my life. Working full time still, and weekends I'm usually beat. I have two friends to schedule lunches with and a dinner out with my Mom, so that should help with the fun factor! You all inspire me.

Did have a wonderful dinner out last night with my fiance. And, I've been spoiling myself buying cashmere sweaters - I think I've bought 6 so far in the past few months. Waiting for a red and a pink one to arrive tomorrow in time for Valentine's day.

Right now, I'm going to watch another episode of Downton Abbey!

Viva Downton Abbey! I'm finding season 4 a bit slow but , of course, I'll keep watching it. Wish I could wear cashmere but anything Wil even a tiny amount of wool, no matter how fine, makes me itch like crazy. It is beautiful.

guess I am going to have to break down and watch downton abbey ... I keep hearing such great things about it but haven't watched a single episode.  It would probably get me through a few of these nasty snow days!!

I had tea with JustJudie today.  It was so fun to meet her in person (I'm kicking myself for not taking a photo to share with you gals).  She is such a gem, every bit as strong and lovely in person as we know her on the boards.  What a treat to spend time with her.

    Nancy,

Isn't meeting people from this board the best? So glad to hear that the two of you had a great moment together. And I love your new avitar.... you are styling!

Nancy - everything that Susan said!  :)

I'm contemplating doing something entirely goofy for fun.  Starting a Facebook page for "Frida and Friends."  We had five cats (yes, I know..don't judge me) until 2 weeks ago. Now we have six with the addition of Frida (named after the artist).  She is really funny, very cute, and after an hour on the "Just Cats" Facebook page, had over 1000 "likes".  So my friends are encouraging me to do a Facebook page/blog about Frida and the other cats.  It should keep me entertained and my brain active!

Here's Frida - she's quite funny and very cute!

Frida is adorable...cute white moustache and everything...I had a cat who looked similar, black with white chest, a "tuxedo" cat.

Nancy, yes, love the new avatar, and how nice you got to meet up with JJ!

    Great drawing of you, Ebru!

I love watching old movies - recently saw The Apartment with Jack Lemon and Shirley McLaine.  Loved it!  Won the Academy award for best picture in 1960

Olympics, not so much, except for the figure skating and some of the ski competitions.  I'm not a sports fan, in general, but will watch basketball if someone else has it on.  When I was a child my father occasionally was the recipient of tickets for box seats at Yankee Stadium.  So boring until the snack sellers came around.

and Downton Abbey - oh the dresses!  I'm sure that's one of the things that keeps me watching.  And, of course, Maggie Smith.

I love to read - fiction and non-fiction, especially memoirs.  I'd welcome any recommendations from any readers among you. I'll put together a list of my recent favorites.  I'm reading Margaret Atwood's Cat's Eye right now and loving it.

How great that Nancy and JJ had a chance to spend some in person time together.  Anyone planning a trip to Nova Scotia?  I'd love to meet you.

Jill, I love to read as well, mostly non-fiction especially bios and autobiographys.  So, I have recommendations:

One of my all-time favorite autobiography:  BossyPants by Tina Fey

"Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail"...thought it would bore me, but I loved it and it really stayed with me after I read it.

"One Light Still Shines: My Life Beyond the Shadows of the Amish Schoolhouse Shooting" written by the widow of the man who committed this atrocious crime.

For some reason, I am drawn to books like the one I just mentioned which are true stories of people who are struck by horrific tragedy yet manage to find a way to work through the grief and move forward with their lives. (I hope you don't find that weird).  There are a few others like this that I've read over the past couple years.  My jaw drops when I read these stories.  Their losses are incomprehensible. Similar books I've read:  "Terror By Night: The True Story of the Brutal Texas Murder That Destroyed a Family, Restored One Man's Faith and Shocked a Nation."

"I'll See You Again" ...the story of the woman who's three young daughters were killed in a traffic accident while in a van driven by the author's sister-in-law.

DivineMrsM,  I read Wild and loved it, too.   Looking forward to Tina Fey.

Since you are drawn to books about people overcoming hardship or tragedy (not weird at all), you might like Unbroken, by Lauren Hillenbrand.  True and amazing story about a young man whose plane was shot down during WWII and after spending and surviving 40+ days on a raft in the Pacific, he landed on an island where he became a Japanese prisoner of war! Survived that too, and is still alive at 90 something.

My fun today is that my oldest son Rob is coming to visit me for a week from Denver. I haven't seen him in a year and a half. My daughter Kerry is coming Wednesday, and my youngest son Kris lives with me and is my caregiver. So we will all be together this week. I can't imagine anything being more fun than that, even if I do have two doctor's appointments this week. :)

Fantastic to have your children around!  I am lucky to have one son in Halifax, along with his lovely wife and my first grandchild.  Other son is in NYC and his visits are so precious to me.

    Enjoy your week.

    Ebru,

Can't tell you how much I wish I was enjoying Spring in Istanbul. Been so cold and snowy here, and more is on the way this week. Are those cherry blossoms or some other fruit?

So my latest obsessions is Ezogelin Corbasi, red lentil soup, like the one served at my local Turkish restaurant. I am hoping that one of the women in your life would be willing to pass her recipe my way. My two attempts have been very good [I mean, soup, lentils, vegetables, it isn't ever going to bad] but I want to make excellent. Are you willing to join me on my quest to make this warming and delicious soup?

As you saw in Nancy's post, we  met each other in Seattle when I was visiting my son.   Today I spent the day flying home.  It was so nice to meet our Nancy!  She truly is even lovelier  than her avitar.  And she is a warm lovely person as well.  I so enjoyed spending time with her.  I found that I felt better all the rest of the day and evening.  What a nice pick me up!   I am so mad i forgot the picture too!  We were so busy talking, somehow it just never occurred.  Well, we will just have to do it again!

If I had unlimited funds and strength, I would travel this world meeting each and every one of you!  That would be so great.   Thank you, Nancy, for such a great time yesterday.

Jill, also, not sure if you are a fan of the TV show 'Call The Midwife', which I think is fantastic.  There is a 3 book series by Jennifer Worth that the series is based on, all true-life stories.  I found them fascinating to read, all about midwives in England in the late 1950s.

Fun has not been on the menu lately. Been working way too many hours which is actually a different kind of fun. But, tonight we celebrated my Mom's 76th birthday. Her husband, my father, died 51 weeks ago, and I didn't want her to spend her first birthday as a widow alone. There were six of us.. including one of my sisters. I took them to our favorite Turkish restaurant and we had one of the slowest meals on record. Perfect for this occasion. I, of course, thought of Ebru. When my Turkish tea arrived, I decided I did need to take just one photo.

    Looks fantastic, Susan!

We're hoping for good weather this weekend as it's the Otaki Kite Festival.  Last year was the first one and I was on crutches, so it was fun, but I'm thinking it will be even better this year without the crutches.

I'm a volunteer fireman, have been for about 14 years.  Yesterday we were paged to a cattle truck rollover.  It was freezing outside!  He was hauling 63 steers, all but about 7 survived.  We had to cut the fiberglass roof off the trailer to release the calves.  I went inside to push the calves out, slipping and sliding in the poop.  Kind of came out green and aromatic LOL  Not normally what I call fun, but I've not been able to do much lately because of my breathing.  It just felt so good to DO something!

Ah, it's fun to catch up and read about some of the good times my BC sisters are having.  Last night my husband and I went to a wonderful concert at Cal Tech to see and hear Ladysmith Black Mombazo.  (They are the South African group that sings on Paul Simon's Graceland album.)   What an amazing group and experience!   For awhile we thought we wouldn't make it, as we were caught on the 110 fwy in a flood area, and couldn't move forward or back.  We thought we'd be there for hours. Fortunately, it cleared up in about 30 minutes, and we made it to the concert with 10 minutes to spare.

The other highlight of my month is we finally purchased a large flat screen TV.  I've been enjoying watching old movies on Netflix on the TV, as well as Downton Abbey and the Olympics.  We have had a small tube for the last 20 years, more due to laziness and not wanting to have to think about how to hook it all up rather than the expense. But it's good we waited, as the big screens have gotten so much more reasonable in the last few years!

My best wishes to all of you who are living in cold climates this winter.  We're having a bit of cold here ourselves, and a lot of needed rain, but I'm not complaining. I have friends family on the east coast and I know you all are really eager for spring to arrive. Just a few more weeks!

Recently I went to a 3-day retreat sponsored by Beit Natan, a support organization for women with cancer. Wonderful is too bland a word to describe it. The retreat gives me strength to go on. One of the women on the retreat said in her blog that it was "CPR for my soul". Yes, it was indeed.

The other wonderful thing that happened is that my son came home from the U.S., where he's been since September. So good when a chick returns to the nest!

    chele,

Although I don't envy your task, it does sound as if it was very rewarding. It always feels good when we can do "normal" things!

    Leah,

That does sound like a fabulous retreat. "CPR for the soul"; I like that.

Wow, Chele - that's awesome!  Just feels so good to do something good, in my opinion.

Sandilee - love Ladysmith Black Mombazo.  Got to see them a few years back and it was amazing.  Flat screen is great too; we finally got one last year and it sure makes watching the Stanley Cup playoffs easier.

Leah - love the CPR for the soul remark.  Sounds fantastic.

Really love seeing what others are up to for fun so thanks for posting!

sandilee, you'll love the larger tv. I 'rewarded' myself with one when I was doing radiation a couple years ago, it makes tv viewing more enjoyable...providing there's something good on the tube!  ha, ha, you have to sort through some garbage, but there's some good shows to be found, especially since you have the netflix.

Ah...'cpr for the soul'.  I'd like to find a retreat like that in my area.  Just about now towards the end of this long, cold, snowy winter I could use it.

last weekend I went to the broadway show "all the way."  It was about president Johnson with Bryan Cranston in the lead role.  It was fascinating, both from an historical perspective, as well as just watching great acting. It definitely helped with the winter blues.

It DOES feel good when we can be normal, doesn't it?  Nerdy

CPR for the soul sounds like just what I need.  I'd love to find a retreat.  Heck, even three days in a hotel with room service would work! LOL
