    My friend told me he had to clear about two inches of ice off his green house.  The forecast is calling for above freezing temperatures Saturday and Sunday so that should help.  I think most of the greenery will snap back up once it is let loose although there are a lot of branches that already are snapped and will have to be chopped down.  Snow often covers that hedge and makes it droop but the darned thing has been there for decades and keeps on carrying on.

    Sunny, thanks for the link.  This is the one that took my eye.  I love lots of flowers and planted some old fashioned iris's in our yard as a kid.  Everyone said they wouldn't grow, but young kids has an area in their brains that doesn't totally believe adults....so my old fashioned iris's grew in the front corner of our yard for all the years we continued to live there.

    Lassie, that ice is soooo THICK! When we decided to move to Kansas and were looking at houses, the state was in the middle of a massive and long lasting ice storm. I was used to snow and some ice, but that monster weather was a whole different horror. Really feeling for those without power.

    Good Afternoon Everybody!

    It's been a beautiful day here ... bright sunshine and in the 50's.  I ran quite a few errands today and splurged with a trip to a nearby town that has a Hobby Lobby.  I love looking at all the colored pencils and art supplies.  It's really cool as you can buy the pencils individually. 

    So far, winter hasn't been too bad here ... just really cold for a few days.  Luckily we haven't had an ice storm yet this year.

    Yorkie ... I lived in the Heartland (Iowa) for one winter a few years ago.  It was the most unbelievably cold, snowy and icy winter I have ever lived through.

    Jackie ... that blue Iris is so beautiful.  I only have two colors in my yard ... deep purple and yellow.  The yellow ones are transplants from my dad's avocado farm in San Diego.

    Bren - you have lived in so many places!  I can't believe the ice in Canada now - we had a bad ice storm here a few years ago, very destructive, but no where NEAR the amount they're getting hit with.

    One of the best things about the winter = cocoa with marshmallow fluff!

    Bren, it does vary here. Two years ago we hardly had a winter. Last year was more normal, but not too bad. So far this winter has been rough, as it seems to have been everywhere.

    Chevy. What a great thing to put on here.  Even though I'm not Canadian.......that looked like so much fun and I loved the Santa ( white man, eh ) in the blue suit.  Okay, I'm just kiddin' about the parentheses.   I note even that D Dynasty  will 'rise' again.  I never watched it as I don't do the 'reality' type shows.  None of them...don't know much about the Kardasians (sp) either.

    chevyboy -- Thanks for posting!  WestJet was hoping to get about 250K views on YouTube but, as you can see, it's got nearly 1.4M.  A super marketing venture by a very successful airline.  And I can vouch for the fact that its employees are the best around!

    I noticed some of the YouTube comments from folks south of our border said it couldn't happen in the U.S. because you're not allowed to say Merry Christmas -- what a load of hogwash.  The Tundra Tart and her hating media types seem to have been having some success in persuading people there is actually a "war on Christmas".  It's so sad.....And they seem to believe that Canadians are all white and Christian -- another load of hogwash.  We're about the most diverse country in the world and 99% of us respect everyone's culture and personal religious beliefs.  New immigrants are not discouraged from keeping their own cultures while taking out Canadian citizenship. The 1% who hate that fact can go for a swim in freezing Lake Erie!

    C4C, I agree with you about the hillbilly from Wasilla and her ilk.  They are the REAL intolerants, demanding that everyone adhere to what THEY want and what THEY believe and what THEY think people should say.  I have never once in my entire life encountered an employer or a company or a person who forbade anyone from saying "Merry Christmas," or who was offended when someone wished them "Merry Christmas." I live in the most liberal jurisdiction in Virginia, right outside the "godless, soulless, atheistic Communist" Nation's capital and I can assure you that there are plenty of commie-pinko-atheist Arlingtonians who say "Merry Christmas" or who say "thank you, same to you" when someone wishes them "Merry Christmas." Anyone saying that there is a war on Christmas is lying for profit or for hatred.  If there were really a war on Christmas, there would be dead people.  Instead, we have rude and ugly people who do things like slug a Salvation Army bell ringer for saying "Happy Holidays." The only ugliness I have seen in the U.S. surrounding Christmas, as a matter of fact, is that generated by the wrong wing.

    And I repeat, the Canadians think of the nicest things and are some of the nicest people I know.  You just have a culture of nice!

    C4C, RL, what wonderful names for the Ahole from Alaska.  Her constant behavior reminds me of what we used to call, in the old days, Looking for Trouble, or in her case, TRYING TO CREATE A FUSS.  Have you noticed, in the past few years, people who have nothing of value to say, contribute for themselves, try to FOMENT cynical trouble in the zeitgeist.  Terribly sad.  All part of the hideous "celebrity culture" we seem to have created - a person becoming known for becoming known.  Reality TV.  Tho' can't really comment on that kind of TV cuz  never watched it, but amazed at how the online world is FILLED with comments about it, 

    Only ducks I know, are the cherished ones in Make Way for Ducklings.  So good to be old.

    Hello Everyone,

    Quiet Saturday around here today.  What's everyone doing?  I went grocery shopping to get a bunch of junk food for my mom.  She's coming up tomorrow morning.  I swear, all she eats are cookies, ice cream and peanut M&Ms.  And she's really tiny!  So after my second trip to walmart in two days, I finished cleaning and then walked the dogs.  Exciting day for me ... NOT.

    My mom has a project for me ... she wants me to fill an empty basket with dried flowers to go on a table in her living room.  Guess we'll go to Hobby Lobby and hit up their sale.  I like doing that crafty kind of stuff.  Plus, it will be nice to have company.

    Blue .. love the Bugs Bunny poster!

    Interesting report from the NYT on what happened in Benghazi.  Surprise - it was as the government said ... Partly the video, partly spontaneous and partly planned.  It comports with the tick-tock the State Department outlined in its briefing afterwards.  Of course, there are people who will refuse to believe it, but fortunately, facts remain facts whether people believe them or not.

    Hi, Bren:  year end reorganizing, shopping bags full of books to the used books store, a bit of cleaning, Clearing, finding things I didn't know I had.  Fun, actually.  Like to do this at year end.  Something about having a lot of hobbies, being retired, remembering E. Roosevelt saying to a young woman "My dear, you have all the time in the world."  And reminding myself to do what I WANT to do, enjoy doing, reading, painting, and enjoying the almost Spring like weather today.

    My current "read" is Edith Wharton.  I'm reading all of her books, and finding how much I love her short stories too.  Have the biography of her by Herminone Lee ( my favorite biographer, wonderful one of Virginia Woolf, and NEW one of Penelope Fitzgerald, which is on my to buy list) will read biography when I've finished all here fiction.  Just love having the luxury of the time and interest to be able to create these kind of projects for myself.  SO, no time for "notmyreality" TV.

    Going to read RL's link to NYT now.
