I second what Sunflowers said. Thank you Jackie. Bill Moyers is a national treasure and his words perfectly sum up what is going to lead us into a Plutocracy (and some would argue we might already be there now). Someone over there was celebrating the ratings of Fox News - all I could think, more subjects for the feudal kingdom - nothing to celebrate and in that context, good ratings are a depressing thing. No different for any other network that works for the power elite.

Chris Christie, if involved with that malicious act, should have tried that on a Bridge to Nowhere, not one into a state governed by Mario Cuomo. If indeed this is retribution to the Democratic Mayor who wouldn't endorse his gubenatorial bid, then bigger than shame on him - it sounds criminal, very Mafioso, indeed. Nope, don't want no leader who runs his business based on payoffs and retribution, though he sort of does fit that stereotype.

Kam - re: the Bridge, shutting down 3 of 4 lanes onto the George Washington Bridge from one of the MOST affluent areas of NJ, where THOUSANDS & THOUSANDS commute into New York City DAILY was DUMBO DUMB. Also kinda makes me smile ;-)

Did anyone stop to think that Faux News' ratings are so high because some are watching them for some laughs...you, know, like rubber necking an accident. I don't get it up here but I would watch every once in a while for the heck of it!

Faux Noise -- Not much to celebrate, actually. Viewership is down 13% from 2012, and it only averaged 1.774M viewers in prime time. And the population of the U.S. is approx 330M? You do the math!

Hah, Blue, I was going to post the same thing. The "ratings" don't say whether people watched it for the comedy effect, for intelligence purposes (as my deputy used to say, he watched it to see what the enemy was saying and when the mob was coming for him with pitchforks and torches), or whether they actually are ingesting that intestinal byproduct. I don't watch it because I have better things to do with my time, and I haven't been vaccinated for rabies. Same with websites like that - I don't look into sewers to see what is slithering around in them, so why should I pollute my brain with sewer websites?

    Bill Moyers -

Also want to do the thumbs up for Justice Brennan, one of the greats.

I've been watching the news of Christie and the bridge with amusement and hope. I say hope, because I hoe it will show all the idiots just what a bully he is.

Alexandria - I thought of you when I heard about the Bridge Bumble, wow, closing with no notice, 3 of 4 lanes onto GW Bridge from a major commuting center of NJ. What a cute thing to do! So happy for us.

MORE good news for MA residents. Scott Brown has moved to New Hampshire. Which takes him out of the running for MA governor. 3 more cheers for Martha Coakley...

Snow white out here, and about 4 degrees...idyllic.

Just to add what others have said about Fox "news". We watch it on occasion. My hubby says we've got to know what the enemy is up to...

It's apparent to me that Liberals/Progressives have different TV viewing habits than our counterparts across the aisle.  There are just as many of us as there are on the other side of the fence, but we, as a whole, do not sit glued in front of the cable TV news waiting to hear our talking points.  Personally, I only rarely turn on MSNBC.  I get most of my news online or from NPR.  I don't like to hear the daily talking points repeated to me ad nauseum.  The Teahdisists obviously don't have varied viewing habits and tend, as a whole, to stay laser-focused on Faux news.  End of story.

On a side note, it is rather amusing to think of all those viewers watching on Election Night, 2012, when Turdblossom lost his mind on Faux after they called the election for Obama!

Turdblossom - I LOVE how much I learn reading this thread. LOVE IT. So glad so many stations replayed that episode, so I could watch it online.

Ditto - Donna & I have the same source of news :) But, I do learn SO much from the links posted on this thread. All my friends are emailing me to thank me for sending them the Bill Moyers speech. Jackie - just wantcha to know, I silently thank YOU every time I get a thank you :) I don't read DKos as much as I used to.

    Good Afternoon Buddies,

DJD ... great to "see" you ... hope you write often!

Gumby ... looking for the "like" button.

Fox news is on here whenever Tim is at home. The talking bimbos irritate me to no end. The fake tans bug me too. I don't watch MSNBC anymore either. I read the news online .. rarely have the TV on anymore, except for Showtime to watch Homeland. There is one guy on The Five on Fox that I like. Can't remember his name, but he's the old guy.

I had to call the police last night. About 7 pm my neighbor started firing his rifle in their driveway. (This is the only neighbor I have close to me). Anyway ... after the first shot, I heard a woman screaming. Then another shot and more yelling and screaming. That's when I called 911. Four squad cars arrived within about 3 minutes. It took a while for them to get the guy shooting on the ground. Turns out it was my neighbor's son going crazy and his wife was screaming at him. The wife continued to scream at the cops too. Guess from start to finish the whole adventure lasted about half an hour. I confess ... I was really scared when I heard that first shot.

I have a mammogram tomorrow morning. Getting a tiny bit nervous. I hate getting them as they really hurt my bad boob .. lots of scar tissue and radiation damage. Not sure when I'll get the results. If they find something I'm sure I'll hear something pretty quickly ... if I have the all clear they'll probably just send me a letter.

Hope everyone is enjoying the day,

    hugs,

    Bren

Hi, Canada, I'm reading a deliciously wonderful book, the English translation of The Alley Cat, by Yves Beauchemin. Orig published in 1981 as Le Matou. Get most of my books at used books stores, I have fabulous book karma, and the "right" one just jumps into my arms. Never heard of this author, or book, noticed it did say over 1,000,000 copies sold worldwide - seems retty good odds if that many people bought it, it must be good. It is. Just starting, but it's good, strange, and FUNNY.

Finished Donna Tartt's second book, The Little Friend. Now just have to find her 1st one. Amazon has it.

BREN - how terrifying!!!! I can feel my knees shaking. UGH! Glad the police are so responsive.

Boring wishes for your mammogram. Can you ask the technician not to Squoosh too hard. I always wondered if it would hurt less, if they used a thin cotton cloth between machine & our skin. Anxiety is SO natural before ANY bc related exam - we know what they're looking for! Seriously, I don' think the fear ever goes away, no matter what stage we're at, and any exam is like a direct line to the SURFACE of all those emotions.

Weather report - the 4 inches of snow we were supposed to get, was about 8 inches ago. People actually get PAID real money for these predictions. Don't they READ all those fancy machines?????? It's a balmy 8 degrees. Rain due this weekend. I'm thinking of going to sleep til Spring.....

Sunnyflowers ... thanks for the encouragement about my mammogram tomorrow. Tim is up in your neck of the woods and he said it is REALLY cold and the snow is pretty deep. He ruminates constantly about the weather ... I probably get at least 3 or 4 calls a day from him with weather updates.

    hugs,

Bren - you said he was headed for Maine - they're going to get the brunt of this storm. And if the predictions are as OFF as ours were, "expect 4" and we've gotten at least 8 or more so far, with several hours still to go b4 it stops. And that's on top of what we got Sat/Sunday. The foot they were to get in ME, well, glad he's in a VERY big truck :) At least it's the light fluffy stuff, and SO damn cold, there will not be a thaw, therefore no ice. Until the RAIN on Saturday. And in the 50's by Monday. But I don't believe anything I read, hear anymore. Just trust what I see outside my door.

RELAX tomorrow...says she who freaks out weeks b4 my annual DF checkup - and I don't even have anything that can be mammogramed ;) They just talk, poke a little, and more talk. Comforting tho...

Bren your mammo will be fine. Think good positive thoughts and don't let them give you ANYTHING BUT GOOD NEWS!!!

This is my realio trulio last week at work.  I completed the big firewall project on Saturday. It went really well. I was pleased to go out on such a good note.

Hubby and I are really excited about our next stage of life.  It's been a long time coming!  He's been looking for a truck camper.  We are going to be SO broke. But we'll just have to make it as we haven't the option not to.

Sunny, RL, Kam, Alexandria....and anyone who enjoyed Moyer's piece as much as I did, I have to confess I wasn't sure how it would be received.  Don't know why other than it is somewhat scary but did "speak" to me about why our government has been working ( or as of the last few years -- not working )  very well and why and how such extremists could get such a foothold and let loose with all the destruction.  Quite upsetting, but a great look at where we have been and where we seem to be headed.

Bren, sure hope all will be well tomorrow.  Think back to how not scared I was for such a long time......till the day I got my diagnosis.  The relief has likely made me forget.....but this last time when I went.....just the first of this month for my yearly mammogram.....they did a 3-D type and I don't recall that so much squishing had to take place.  Since I have dense tissue.....and since every bit of my innocence has vanished...I usually tell them to squish as hard as they want --- because I don't want any thing to be "missed".  Maybe you could ask them if there is some way to " make it a bit easier ", but I would imagine if they do anything that is 'easier' they would have said.  I don't have rads damage though....and for most things I have a pain tolerance that is at the top of the chart pretty much -- so  I have to say.....I am probably the last person who should be trying to come up with ideas.

I would have been terrified if I heard 'shots fired' and would have called the police as well.  This is what so bothers me about guns.  People can be so very responsible.......until something goes wrong with them.  I'm just thankful it wasn't some military weapon.  I hope he gets help because that could have really gotten ugly.

Hmmmm, I'm one of the  ( not too often though ) Fox viewers who tunes in because I find it hilarious to watch these people spew some of that idiocy with totally straight faces.  I also chuckle when I hear Fox and MSNBC ratings being compared.  If that is all it takes to make the feeble Fox audience swell with pride....by all means Fox viewers....don't give that up ( cough-cough ) but as far as I'm concerned....I'd rather feel pride in a person who holds out their hand to help another, or a person who feels good about others doing well, or a person who will, when seeing a military family having a meal, go up quietly to the cashier and pay their bill.  I'd rather feel pride in saluting a returning service person from overseas....but I digress.  If you get a great sense of worth over some stupid t.v. ratings....you go for it.  Hope it continues to soothe and swell your chest.  We all get to choose what makes us feel good.

    Jackie

GG ---  I've always said that it is amazing what you can do when you have no choice.  I said that for a long time, but really hit home when I had to get my little case of C and do a lot of harsh chemo and rads.  That is when that saying took on a whole new dimension.  I think there is a quote that says almost the same thing but I was not aware of the quote until recently.

Sometimes having no choice.....just means you have to find the ways to make it go right -- no matter what.

Enjoy and so glad you have started with a rousing win with your job completion.  Way to go.

Suzie. I am sure that what you said is not what you meant.  There are some unusual, dangerous "rights" in the USA, but it is not a country populated by barbarians.  I would think that the average American and the average Australian (and Canadian) would find themselves in agreement about our responsibility for the welfare of our neighbours.  The fact that we have less gun related incidents where we live does not mean that people in the USA are bristling with hand guns.  If it were Bren would have been more nonchalant.  Something to the effect "and the neighbours were at it again".  Or if it was so common as to not warrant mention. That would be barbaric.
