What are you doing for fun??

Tonight I'm going to a rehearsal of the small women's choir I'm in. I so much love to sing!
Leah -
Off to NYC for the weekend. We have tickets to three shows and plan to make as many museum visits as we can cram in! The top prospect is the much-praised textile show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Tina -
Tina, hope you had a great time in NYC. I lived there in the East VIllage and had my first two children there. Today we live in Germany where their Dad is from, and I am observing the cat for fun this morning. She was miffed, apparently to have to settle for dry cat food since the wet food ran out yesterday and just now brought a mouse in, still alive and seemingly unharmed. Now the mouse is in a place the cat can't get her and I am very happy for the mouse, and strangely euphoric from this sudden distraction from waiting for test results. It is good to feel euphoric and see the whole big picture, how thankful I am for all I have on this clear, crisp autumn morning. I am glad to have this forum, where I only come when I am waiting for test results, practically. Kitty Cat is meowing at me in frustration, she seems to want me to help her get that mouse. I am just thinking how to get the mouse out of the house, if I lift up the large thing she is hiding under she will probably get away and eventually get caught. So I don't know what to do. So I just keep typing. It happens that writing is another thing I do for fun, emailing a friend in the US so I can write in English. You might say I am having a blast right here, right now. I am tempted to write about the tests to be done but this is supposed to be about what I am doing for fun and I already have a thread about it that I started the other day. Now I send out love to you all, whether you are reading this or not, it seems like a good way to end this post.

just got back from a 5 day trip to Ohio where I visited several aunts and lots of cousins and extended family. It was great to rekindle relationships that had fallen by the wayside! -
Okay, needed a night and day to recover from our whirlwind three-day NYC jaunt. Here are the highlights:
Shows: "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Big Fish on Broadway and "The Landing" off-Broadway.
Museum and Art Exhibits: The Armory Show and Portraits from the Gilded Age at the New York Historical Society, a small, exquisite exhibit of Leonardo DaVinci drawings at the Morgan Library, "Interwoven Globe," a mammoth exhibit about worldwide textile trade from 1500-1800, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
We took friends who seldom get to NYC along and introduced them to the museums and one of our favorite restaurants. They are among the few who know about my health status, but they forget that I am not six-feet tall and as in good shape as they are, so they walk very fast and were constantly ahead of us---until one of them would drop back and slow down. This was constant and made me feel both resentful and self-conscious. Not a good feeling.
We tried to take taxis most places so I could minimize hip/back pain and conserve energy, but when rain dissolved them had to resort to the subway and walking. Standing in museums, using stairs and 'way too much pavement-pounding ( race-walking many blocks to one theater when we couldn't get a cab) sometimes nearly stopped me in my tracks, but here I am, intact.
I returned home exhausted. We crammed too much in. I will remain greedy for experiences, but will have to rethink how much I bite off on future trips and stick to a more sane agenda.

Saturday was ds wedding. Turned out really nice even though an outdoor wedding was a little hard to imagine in November. The weather cooperated fairly well, although it was chilly and down right cold for the reception which was in a big tent. They had heaters, but it didn't do much good. Lots of old ladies doing old dances (anybody remember the pony and the swim?) and the younger ones teaching us the newest in line dances. It was really pretty hysterical, and by the end of the night my feet were killing me, heels and I do not get along anymore. Bride and groom were very happy and are off to St. Augustine for their honeymoon on Saturday. -
congratulations, Mary. It sounds like, despite the chill, everyone had a good time. I will admit that I'm one of those old ladies who remembers both the pony and the swim. I teach them to my first graders when we dance and they love it! Give those feet a good rest.

Tina, so glad you had a good trip to NYC but yes, you did cram too much in. I'm with you. I have to limit the # of activities when I go on a trip. Taking my daughter on a 1 day trip to New York on dec. 6 with our church. We will see the radio city music hall show where I will get a good rest and also take a bus tour of the city. Promised my daughter some shopping as well. I took her when she was a teenager but not for the Christmas show. It will be a very long day. Leaving our church at 6:00 a.m. And returning at 11:00 p.m. I will do some napping, I am sure!!
Mary, the wedding sounded like so much fun. Yeah, I remember the pony, the swim, and how about the Freddie?? Just had my 45th high school reunion and there was a bit of that going on!! I like the line dances they do now. Reminds me of some of the exercise programs. You sure get a good work out!!
had chemo yesterday but have the decadron energy going on, will go rake so e leaves while the weather is nice! -
Glenna, I've heard there is a new choreographer for the Rockettes and that the Christmas show at Radio City is going to have some wonderful surprises.
Speaking of naps, I'm zonked from today's treatment and onc visit. Gotta get to bed and sleep it off.
Tina -
oh, good! I've seen the show several times so will look forward to something new! Thanks for letting me know! On another topic, I found out yesterday from my onc that any of us with lung problems should not be taking leaves because of the possibility of breathing in mold spores and getting very sick as in possible death. No more leaf raking for me!! -
Good! I never liked leaf raking. Well, I don't have lung mets and I live in a townhouse complex with gardeners but I still get lots of leaves on my patio -
We have a 1/4 acre and 5 city trees over 50 feet high, 3 oaks, liquid amber and a cherry... the leaves are unreal. I think the one crazy luxury I would want is a leaf service! although our 12 year old gets paid 5 an hour to rake. still I hate it. Good there is an out. A reason to bail out of raking leaves. -
We used to have liquid amber trees by my old house. Ugh! Well, that settles it. No more raking for me.
Disclaimer: My patio is do small that I use a broom and a dustpan:) -
I just finished parent/teacher conferences and report cards. It is an exhausting week and a half, as I still have to plan, prep, teach, correct work etc. I do love talking with the parents but I am a zombie by the time it's over. So, what am I doing today for fun? Nothing save for my nails and a bit of laundry. Heck, I'm still in pj's and it's 1:00 pm. Now that's fun! -
My daughter and her family were here for Sabbath (Fri to Sat). She's got 5 kids, the youngest 1-yr-old twins. The babies are starting to walk so watching their antics was really fun. Like a lot of the little ones in our family, the twins are small for their age. So they walked under the dining room table. Yep, that's walked, didn't have to bend or even duck.

Fun Update Including a Revelation: My partner and I were married in a private (one officiant, two friends as attendants) ceremony in our dining room in mid-September. We arrived at the decision to keep this long-delayed occasion small and low-key for myriad reasons, the primary one being cost, the next the dilemma of keeping the invitation list under 300!
Insisting that our marriage had to be celebrated, two thoughtful and generous friends threw us a luncheon party yesterday at their large home, treating more than 100 of our nearest and dearest to a fabulous buffet meal. There was a bar and a huge cake. There were toasts so loving and full of regard that they embarrassed us. We insisted that there be no gifts, so guests brought us their beaming smiles, hugs and lots of good wishes, and made donations to our favorite charitable causes.
(The hosts and majority of the guests have no idea I have cancer, so I can revel in the good feelings of the day and the afterglow without once wondering "Did they do this for us because they know I'm sick?" )
Today it's back to "normal" as we prepare our first of two Thanksgiving meals, one at our home today for friends and family, one Thursday at the house of friends at the beach. The turkey is in the oven and I must stop typing, set the table and clean up the kitchen!
Feeling fortunate,
Tina -
Congratulations, Tina! Sounds like a great celebration. And two Thanksgiving meals to look forward to! -
Tina,
Now that sounds like fun! What generous friends, full of love for two wonderful people! You are indeed fortunate. Enjoy T-Day No 1.
*susan* -
Tina,
Congratulations! May your happiness keep a smile in your heart for a very long time.
Caryn -
What a great, happy Revelation!! Congratulations Tina. i am very happy for you. :-) -
That's wonderful Tina!!! -
I attended my XL class reunion last night and even professed my crush to my crush in high school. He was very gracious about it and for six hours I felt like I was 18 again! After hearing about a few classmates who have passed on, I was reminded just how uncertain our lives are...with or without cancer so I decided to take at least one day a week to reconnect with family and friends who I've lost touch with. I have to say though my crush is as handsome as ever and NEVER married...although I love my DH it was fun to be 18 again :-)
Btw Tina2 congratulations on your marriage! That is wonderful news. My best wishes to you both
Amy -
Congratulations Tina, So very happy for you! Amy, glad you enjoyed your reunion. I had a blast at mine last year. I am preparing for Thanksgiving at our home for my family. My daughter flies in Tuesday night. Can't wait to see her and spend time with her.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! -
Congratulations Tina!
Happy Thanksgiving to all. Enjoy your family, enjoy your turkey.
And Happy Chanukah!
Leah -
Tina, congratulations! Happy, happy, happy! -
Yesterday, the JCC (Jewish Community Center ) hosted a Chanukah Festival for children and families. It was called Chanukah on Ice because it featured an artificial ice rink. Yes, artificial ! I never knew there was such a thing. They had lots of activities for children and although a bit young, my granddaughter enjoyed it, especially decorating and eating donuts. The mascot from our NHL team was there, he's a shark, and my granddaughter posed for a picture with him. She was being held by my younger dd and looked terrified. It looked like she was saying, please auntie K, don't let him eat me! This whole lovely event was planned and managed by my dear SIL. Well done! -
My DD made a family Chanukah party last night. As usual, the most fun part was my grandchildren. The three oldest (8 1/2, 5 1/2, 3 1/2) all lit their own Chanukiot (menorahs). They all knew the blessings, even the little one. Well, OK, a few of the words were, shall we say, originals. And they (and everyone else) loved my sufganiot (donuts).
Happy Chanukah!
Leah -
First, thanks to all for your congratulations on our long-delayed (34+ years) marriage. High time, eh?
Next, know that my fun on this incredibly warm day (60 degrees!) is cleaning out our outdoor ceramic plant containers and water gardens before they freeze again and break. I am achy, muddy, smelly, grateful for the warm spell that allows me to do what I had postponed---and very happy.
Tina -
Happy Chanukah to you and all your family and friends, Leah!! -
I'm not sure why, but I'm enjoying the small things this Christmas season. I don't overdose on it. Not too much Christmas music, but a friend asked me to make her a CD of Christmas tunes (I'd made one a few years ago for her) and I had a lot of fun going through my itunes and picking out songs. I'm having fun shopping, one reason is it seems everyone on my list is easy to buy for this year, and I'm finding a lot online with free shipping. We have Thanksgiving dinner for my family, about 15 of us, every year at our house, and that went so nicely, it seemed to start the season off on the right note. I decorate, but just a little at a time as I feel like it, and nothing too elaborate (my mantra: what goes up must come down). I'm busier than I want to be, in a way I'd just like to lie around after work and read and watch TV. But there's different get-togethers with family members over the next few weeks, so I'm making the most of it in a casual way.
