What are you doing for fun??

Hello Glenna,  I live in the Finger Lakes close, to Cayuga Lake.  It has been very chilly the past few days.  I do love fall in CNY though, in a couple more weeks the colors will be spectacular!  I am heading down to see my DD in Baltimore in 2 weeks, she is running in the Baltimore Marathon.  I hope it will still be warmer in Baltimore.  I haven't seen her in awhile so I'm very excited!

Has anyone been to Niagara Falls in October?  Any must do's?  I was supposed to meet a friend in Savannah in mid-October, but she is not able to go now.  So, I've booked myself a trip to see the Falls, which I've never done, and hopefully some signs of the fall season that we don't get down here in Florida.  

TheDivineMrsM - Thank you!  I will make sure to do the boat tour first and then the Cave of the Winds tour.  That is the type of info that is really good to have! 

Glenna, the first time I visited Niagara Falls was in 1992 and it was on the Canadian side.  We took a double decker bus tour and it was so much fun. There'a bit more to do, wax museum, cable car over the whirlpool and it was the first time we ever ate at a Rainforest Cafe.  It's definitely more touristy on that side than the American side, however, you need a passport these days to cross the border, don't you (since 9/11)?  Still, the American side with the National Park to wander through was beautiful.  

Ah, Niagra Falls. Haven't been there since I was a child. My dad has pictures of us kids on the Maid of the Mist and at Cave of the Winds. Good memories!

Yes, tho there's plenty for a weekend of fun on the American side of the Falls without heading over to the Candadian side.

Yes! Tonight we started watching Disney movies again with him, only in English this time. He is not yet fluent of course, but familiar with many words. Hopefully he'll express himself without much help there to Pooh & Mickey!

Tina, Soleil was in my mind the entire day yesterday, I get this as a sign she is with us!

I just spent a glorious weekend in Vermont - my niece's wedding with lots of family and old friends, gorgeous fall colors, a stop at the Ben and Jerry's factory (Chocolate Fudge Brownie for me), and a fabulous dinner in Montreal before flying back to Nova Scotia.

Dreams for my next adventures - Havana, Quebec City, Italy, Japan. Maybe possible. Maybe not.  But a girl can dream can't she?

Jill - Your trip to Vermont sounds wonderful.  Vermont/ Maine are on my "to do" list still.

I forgot who mentioned Cave of the Winds at Niagara as it was a page or two back, but I had a question about it.  I looked at a picture and saw many steps.  Are there a ton of steps? Is it a hard climb up?  My knees/feet are my most affected areas from treatment, and I want to do as much as possible but not risk paying for it later.

nbnotes, there are steps at Cave of the Winds, but you have a choice if you want to take them or not to get higher towards the Falls.  You can just stand on the Observation Deck if you don't want to take steps to go any higer.I see the price is only $11 to go, so even if that's all you do, it's worth it.  If you check out TripAdvisor on line and look up Niagara Falls, you'll see Cave of the Winds is the #1 rated tourist attraction there.

We started off by being outfitted with yellow ponchos and sandals.  The sandals were really cute and we were told if we wanted to we could keep them as souvenirs.  They never re-use the sandals.  They also provided us with a plastic bag to keep our valuables dry.

Once we were outfitted it was time for us to ride the elevator 175 feet down to the base of the falls.  When we exited the elevator we were in a tunnel.  We walked through the tunnel and we emerged surprisingly close to the water. We came out at the edge of the water and because it was in the evening, all the buildings around the water were lit up, the view was stunning and the weather was perfectly clear and warm.

Then I turned to my left and I was astounded to see that we were right at the Falls.   As we walked down a wooden walkway we got closer and closer to the falls.  There are a series of stairs and platforms and you have the choice to go down the stairs and get very close to the water if you like.  Actually once you are on the observation deck you choose how high you want to go. Each deck will bring you higher and higher and if you don’t mind getting wet, and I mean soaked, you can experience the “Hurricane Deck.”

Can you believe that as you stand at the railing of the Hurricane deck you are only 20ft from the Bridal Veil Falls.  You feel and hear the awesome power behind all those millions of gallons of water crashing down.  The entire area is well lit, especially the falls, so night viewing is ideal. The view is just WOW!  In Fact the entire experience is unique – the sound and the sight of that cascading waterfall is truly awesome. It was an amazing experience and was thoroughly enjoyed by everybody.  Keep in mind if you go the Hurricane Deck, you are going to get wet, but you are going to laugh a lot!  It is an experience of a lifetime.

Ha, ha, yes, the sandals are sort of orthopedic looking bright footwear, not what I'd personally consider 'cute'.  But fun.
