What are you doing for fun??

Hello Glenna, I live in the Finger Lakes close, to Cayuga Lake. It has been very chilly the past few days. I do love fall in CNY though, in a couple more weeks the colors will be spectacular! I am heading down to see my DD in Baltimore in 2 weeks, she is running in the Baltimore Marathon. I hope it will still be warmer in Baltimore. I haven't seen her in awhile so I'm very excited!
-
Teacher911 - LOVe spending time with my daughter,! Enjoy every minute of it. Will you get a good place to watch her run?
-
Has anyone been to Niagara Falls in October? Any must do's? I was supposed to meet a friend in Savannah in mid-October, but she is not able to go now. So, I've booked myself a trip to see the Falls, which I've never done, and hopefully some signs of the fall season that we don't get down here in Florida.
-
Niagara Falls is one of my favorite places, have visited three times, it's a five hour drive from where I live. I just love the Falls.
I've been there in October and it's a perfect time to go. Certainly, take the Maid of the Mist boat tour that goes all the way up to the Horseshoe Falls. You will feel the mist coming off the waterfall.
Do that first, and the do the Cave of the Winds tour. You take an elevator down and get out and walk along decking that is right next to the Bridal Falls. You are literally standing right next to it. My husband, son and I all loved this even more than the Maid of the Mist tour. That's why I suggest doing that first and Cave of the Winds second.
Also, not sure if you ever check out TripAdvisor, the website. You can look up Niagara Falls and they have a list of tourist attractions in the area for other things to do if you're looking.
-
TheDivineMrsM - Thank you! I will make sure to do the boat tour first and then the Cave of the Winds tour. That is the type of info that is really good to have!
-
Nbnotes, I'm guessing the foliage will be beautiful in October and you will love the falls. My sister and I took her granddaughters and our niece in June and had a great time! We stayed on the Canada side which is way more touristy than I remember it from the last time I was there (when my 36 year old son was in 3rd grade).
Had a wonderful time on our wine trip. Visited 19 wineries in 4 days! Don't think I could've done another day! We were right at Cayuga lake, teacher 911. What a beautiful area you live in!! I hope you do have good weather for your Baltimore trip. Make sure you have some crab cakes while you're here! I live about 30 minutes south of Baltimore, sort of in the middle of d.c, and Baltimore and Annapolis. When is the marathon? -
Glenna, the first time I visited Niagara Falls was in 1992 and it was on the Canadian side. We took a double decker bus tour and it was so much fun. There'a bit more to do, wax museum, cable car over the whirlpool and it was the first time we ever ate at a Rainforest Cafe. It's definitely more touristy on that side than the American side, however, you need a passport these days to cross the border, don't you (since 9/11)? Still, the American side with the National Park to wander through was beautiful.
-
Glenna & stagefree, do you play Scrabble on line?
-
Ah, Niagra Falls. Haven't been there since I was a child. My dad has pictures of us kids on the Maid of the Mist and at Cave of the Winds. Good memories!
Caryn -
Chanah, we play words with friends. Do you play?? I'm glenna1906 and Stagefree is Stagefree!!
Mrs. M, I'm pretty sure adults need a passport to get into Canada. We had them so we used them though the children with us did not need them. Guess you should check it out if you're thinking of going. It is a beautiful place to visit!! -
Yes, tho there's plenty for a weekend of fun on the American side of the Falls without heading over to the Candadian side.
-
Saying it here because I think those who knew her will understand: I found myself remembering sunny Soleil/Cathy on this cloudy morning. I miss her bright presence, particularly on this thread.
I'm going to explore an historic estate today and will take her memory along.
Tina
-
Tina, your rememberance of Cathy/Soleil brought a smile to my face. Thanks! I miss her from the fitness thread. Such a positive soul. I hope you enjoy your historic explorations today.
-
Today I am north of the White Mountains. About to go make my mother some lunch, and then we are taking the Cog Railroad to the top of Mt. Washington. As I gaze up that mountain from this cottage, I can see that the cloud cover is valiantly trying to clear for us. Mom_02143 has made reservations at one of the resort hotels for dinner tonight.
I am going to carry several sweaters, plus a down vest. Darn cold up in those mountains this time of year.

Susan, I bet the colors are beautiful!!

Ebru: You and your DS will have a ball, I am sure! I love Disney even today. He is a great age for it just as you said. Not too young nor too old. Isn't it wonderful to be able to share an experience like Disney with your son? I used to love that when my son was a boy.
Have fun wine tasting, Glenna. Art prize does sound like a lot of fun. So everyone....Enjoy! Do what we can, where and when we can. That is my motto. -
Yes! Tonight we started watching Disney movies again with him, only in English this time. He is not yet fluent of course, but familiar with many words. Hopefully he'll express himself without much help there to Pooh & Mickey!
Chanah, challanging you in the next game, ha ha! Waiting for your invitation.
Tina, Soleil was in my mind the entire day yesterday, I get this as a sign she is with us! -
I have a slightly beat up white rattan chair on my front porch. I think of soleil every time I see it.
Ebru,
dd and new SIL just returned from delayed honeymoon. Where you ask? Disneyland, of course! They are huge Disney fans. Their wedding cake topper was Mickey and Minnie and they got season passes (Anaheim, CA) as a wedding gift. They even got to dine at the ultra exclusive Club 33! You will have a fabulous time.
Caryn -
I just spent a glorious weekend in Vermont - my niece's wedding with lots of family and old friends, gorgeous fall colors, a stop at the Ben and Jerry's factory (Chocolate Fudge Brownie for me), and a fabulous dinner in Montreal before flying back to Nova Scotia.
Dreams for my next adventures - Havana, Quebec City, Italy, Japan. Maybe possible. Maybe not. But a girl can dream can't she?
-
Here is a shot from the summit of Mt. Washington, yesterday afternoon. Didn't walk up. Took the Cog Railroad.
-
Wow, Susan, great shot! I've been up there. Was it cold?
Tina
-
susan, what a breathtaking view. The clouds look so cool hovering overtop the mountains. Gorgeous.
-
Susan - that is an amazing picture!
Jill - Your trip to Vermont sounds wonderful. Vermont/ Maine are on my "to do" list still.
I forgot who mentioned Cave of the Winds at Niagara as it was a page or two back, but I had a question about it. I looked at a picture and saw many steps. Are there a ton of steps? Is it a hard climb up? My knees/feet are my most affected areas from treatment, and I want to do as much as possible but not risk paying for it later.
-
Susan just wow!!!!!
Caryn could İsneyland be heaven 😳? Even at this age I am sooo excited and counting the days left for our trip? I sooo agree it's a great place for honeymoon!!!
Hugs
Ebru -
nbnotes, there are steps at Cave of the Winds, but you have a choice if you want to take them or not to get higher towards the Falls. You can just stand on the Observation Deck if you don't want to take steps to go any higer.I see the price is only $11 to go, so even if that's all you do, it's worth it. If you check out TripAdvisor on line and look up Niagara Falls, you'll see Cave of the Winds is the #1 rated tourist attraction there.
Here is one woman's recent account of the tour (September 27, 2013) that I found on-lne:
************************************************************************
We started off by being outfitted with yellow ponchos and sandals. The sandals were really cute and we were told if we wanted to we could keep them as souvenirs. They never re-use the sandals. They also provided us with a plastic bag to keep our valuables dry.
Once we were outfitted it was time for us to ride the elevator 175 feet down to the base of the falls. When we exited the elevator we were in a tunnel. We walked through the tunnel and we emerged surprisingly close to the water. We came out at the edge of the water and because it was in the evening, all the buildings around the water were lit up, the view was stunning and the weather was perfectly clear and warm.
Then I turned to my left and I was astounded to see that we were right at the Falls. As we walked down a wooden walkway we got closer and closer to the falls. There are a series of stairs and platforms and you have the choice to go down the stairs and get very close to the water if you like. Actually once you are on the observation deck you choose how high you want to go. Each deck will bring you higher and higher and if you don’t mind getting wet, and I mean soaked, you can experience the “Hurricane Deck.”
Can you believe that as you stand at the railing of the Hurricane deck you are only 20ft from the Bridal Veil Falls. You feel and hear the awesome power behind all those millions of gallons of water crashing down. The entire area is well lit, especially the falls, so night viewing is ideal. The view is just WOW! In Fact the entire experience is unique – the sound and the sight of that cascading waterfall is truly awesome. It was an amazing experience and was thoroughly enjoyed by everybody. Keep in mind if you go the Hurricane Deck, you are going to get wet, but you are going to laugh a lot! It is an experience of a lifetime.
-
Lol! I don't know if I'd call those sandals cute but they do look comfy. They definitely did not give those out hundreds of years ago when I visited as a child!
-
Ha, ha, yes, the sandals are sort of orthopedic looking bright footwear, not what I'd personally consider 'cute'. But fun.
-
TheDivineMrsM - Thank you for the info! Just knowing that the observation deck itself is worth the price is a relief, and then I can do the steps depending on how I feel. It takes some pressure off to know that I can still enjoy it.
-
Susan, beautiful from top of Mt. Washington. Thanks for sharing.
-
We're heading to NYC for a couple of days of theatre and museum-going, then taking the train to Boston to meet old friends from the UK who are visiting New England for the first time. They have been all over the place and are having a glorious experience. Susan, I would love to meet you, but since we're up there only two days, and those are jammed, this is probably not the time. Maybe you can visit this area again soon. I'll let you know when DC reopens. We have a lot of bewildered tourists wandering the streets, looking longingly at shuttered museums and barricaded memorials. It's sad.
