Hi Everyone,
Just found out that my (probable) future stepdaughter-in-law was at the Race. Says she walked right past the trolley. I'll have to check the photos and see if I can see her. How weird is that?
I hope everyone is doing well, and has fun plans for the weekend.
We're mostly hanging out at home. Need to fix our screenhouse that blew over last fall so I can sit outside without worrying about bug bites.
I did get my DH to agree to take me downtown to the Tastefest tomorrow to see Ray Davies perform. I'm a huge Kinks fan, Mike is not.
Have a great weekend!
Irene -
Haven't posted in forever. I hope you are all fine. I've been in Troy Beaumont twice for several days in the past two weeks--agonizing back pain. Either I have a fractured sacrum or I don't and have issues related to spondylolythesis. Either way Without dilauded and a duragesic pain patch can't do anything but moan. As it is, even medicated all I can do is lie on one of my sides and walk to the bathroom with a walker. What a way to spend summer vacation. The gfood thing is that I may have found a new onc.that I like. Anyone who goes to Beaumont familiar with Dr. Akhbar? He seems very nice. I also could not believe the efficiency of their emergency care as compared to Henry Ford's. Ford is a great research facility and gtrauma center, but I wish I had gone to Troy Beaumont all along. It would have spared my family and me much trauma. My adult kids confessed that they were afraid to sleep when I was in Ford because they were afraid they would be awakened by a call that I was no longer with them. (They got one that I had stopped breathing & had to be intubated). It was also so much quierter andmore restful. In two days, I saw the house dr. 3 times, 2 pain clinic specialists, 1 spinal specialist, a dermatologist (drug reaction), and a new oncologist. Also had xrays, 3 cat scans and a doppler to look for blood clots. Medications were always accurate & on time. Everyone was so pleasant! If Ihad been going there all along, I wouldn't have let a lot of matters get so out of hand that they were unbearable because I was more frightened of the hospital than dying. I have to get off the computer now. I can only sit for a few minutes and then only when medicated. I'm praying for this to go away soon, although I know it is better than doing chemo or many other things.
We are joking that the pink lei from the walk may have been my 7-month-old grandson's most expensive toy from grandma because he was fascinated with it and played with it instead of his other granny toys, but that was the day the pain started. Of course, I didn't have enough sense to stop and rest then, so matters got worse and worse.
Stay healthy the rest of you. Let me know when the next luncheon is. Hopefully, by then I will be able to walk and drive and sit.

Hi Everyone,
Hope you're all doing well. Been busier in the last month or so than I've been in two years. Crazy.
Just got back from taking my niece and nephew to see my sister in NYC. We had a great time. It was extremely hot - hit 100 one day, and humid. It was a trip my brother and I had been planning shortly before he died a few years ago. It was good to be able to finally go, even though it means I'm still in cast (had it taken off for the trip).
We just had to put our oldest kitty (9) to sleep, which was really hard. He was a great cat - the one who always wanted to be with people. He apparently had lymphoma. Feel incredibly guilty that we didn't see it before he was in the end stages. Feel incredibly pissed off that the vet didn't see it when we had him there a couple of months ago. We now have a new vet, and an appointment for the other five to make sure they're all okay.
Ann - Hope you're feeling better. Sounds like you've had an awful time of it the last few weeks. I'm not familiar with Dr. Akhbar, but I'm very familiar with Troy Beaumont. Everyone I've ever dealt with there has been great. Seems like my husband has gone to every other hospital in the area and always seems to have some kind of easily avoidable problem come up. I keep telling him to insist on a Beaumont doc when he gets a referral to a specialist. But he never listens.....
Hope everyone is having a great summer.
Irene -
Hi, Irene! I'm glad that you had a great time in NYC. It's such an exciting city. I've always wanted to go there. There is so much to see and do.
I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty. It is very hard to lose a pet. They are just like a member of your family. Hugs to you and your family.
Take care,
Tonya -
Irene, I'm glad you got to go to NYC. I was scheduled to do that before this back problem stuff. Still confined to home, but therapist says that I am getting better.
In reading Gilda's calendar for the month, I noticed Cancer: The Musical is being performed. My son took me to see that at the Planet Ant in Hamtramck on Mother's Day to try to exorcise my demons which used to come out at the mere mention of the worldl I really enjoyed it. I think lots of you all might too. I left the time & date upstairs, but will posgt it when I manage to make the pilgrimage again. (It's really difficult for me to go up or down). If I can sit, I may go again.
Ann -
Ann - hope your back is getting better. Next time you make the treck downstairs, I'd like to hear info about the musical. What is Gilda's calendar also? It sounds like you've been through the ringer. Maybe having a new doc that you like will make all the difference for you.
Irene - so sorry about your cat. They just tear your heart out. Mine were/are like my kids. Hope you get out of your cast soon.
Is anyone going to the Ann Arbor Art Fair next week? I'm definately going one day, at least after work. If anyone wants to meet up, let me know.
Kats has put together a fantastic slide show of the Komen race. She is bashful about sending this because Shel's hubby is a professional and she modestly thinks it won't measure up. I watched a preliminary copy and she did a wonderful job.
Shel - I hope you don't mind because we would still love to see what your hubby is cooking up when he gets a chance.
If you would like Mary (Kats) or I to send you a copy, please let me know. I had a problem with the file size and had it mailed to me. We are going to give Messenger a try to see If I can get it that way and save postage.
Shel - how are you healing? Drains out by now? Oh shoot - I was just reading old messages and realize I didn't send you and Sil your t-shirts. I'll see if I have your address and get them out to you.
Tonya - Make that appointment yet darlin? You don't want all of us nagging you, do you? I'm sure it is nothing but you need to have peace of mind.
Hope everyone is enjoying their summer. I love this weather! Ok - got to go, have a Yahoo Message from Mr. Kats!

Hi Michigan Ladies,
I was researching my soon to be oncologists and PS and stumbled across this thread on Google. Small world! I'm here in Utica, am frequenting Troy Beaumont and just wanted to introduce myself.
Anne -
Welcome Anne - ArmyNavyMom! I thought I would catch up on some of your posts and noticed one from shine_on_syd. The last post of that discussion is from Crazy_Diamond that says "RIP Syd Barrett". Did anyone see that?
Ok - I had to think about that for a minute and edit this. Crazy_Diamond as in "Shine on Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd". Syd Barrett was the founder of Pink Floyd who died yesterday. Was this the same Syd who posted the discussion shine_on_syd?
Mr. Kats walked me through getting the video using Yahoo Messenger. It worked and the video is fantastic! Mary is very talented. Mary, thank you and also thank Bob for me. You really should do this professionally because you have a gift.
If anyone wants me to try and send the video by Yahoo Messenger, load Messenger and let's give it a whirl some night after work or on the weekend.
Hope everyone is well. -
oh my gosh!!!!!! send it send it send it!!!!!!! (the slideshow i mean)..........its been crazy here since i got the other mastectomy! mike is constantly travelling and i am constantly at an appt and my dtr is constantly going to camps or riding or something! i'd love to see it!.......mike is working on our disc in between gigs........it's gonna be great!

The date for Cancer: The Musical at Gilda's is this Friday. Welcome Army/Navy mom. My new onc. is at Troy Beaumont, Dr. Akhtar. My other treatment was at Henry Ford. So far I love Troy Beaumont
Ann -
Michelle,
I was hoping you wouldn't be upset. Mine is strictly amateur but I had fun making it.
PM me your mailing info and I'll be happy to send you a copy.
Mary -
Hi ladies,
I was dx 5-25-06. My onc doc is having me do chemo first, then surgery, then radiation. I go for my 1st chemo treatment tomorrow. I'm a bit nervous. I'm 46 I have a fantastic husband, who has been by my side every step of the way. We have two kids- 1 girl who turned sweet 16 on Tues and our son is 13. I'm over on the west side of the state in lovely Cereal City (Battle Creek)
Kristy -
Thanks, Tonya. I really recommend New York - both the city and the state. The city is a blast and the state is beautiful.
Thanks, Nancy. Yes, they are almost like kids, aren't they. The other five are so close in age I'm dreading them getting older. We're taking them all to the vet Saturday. Now I can add cat cancer paranoia to my usual cancer paranoia.
I'm going to have to search for the Syd thread to see what you're talking about. I'm so confused.
Ann - Too bad the show isn't a couple of weeks from now. It would give us time to maybe all get together and go. And you time to get feeling better.
Anne - Welcome to the Michigan thread! Nice to add another eastsider to the group. I'm about 30 miles or so north of you. I went to Troy and Royal Oak Beaumont for my treatment last year. My surgeon and radiologist are in Troy and my onc (soon to be ex-onc most likely) is out of Royal Oak.
Kristy - Welcome! Which chemo will you be getting? You'll probably be surprised by how much worse it was thinking about it than actually having it. Just remember to drink a lot of fluids and take the anti-nausea meds as directed. Do NOT wait until you feel nauseous before taking them. Please keep us posted on how it goes.
Take care,
Irene -
Kristy,
Best Wishes for tomorrow.
Good advice from Irene about the water and anti-nausea meds.
kats -
Nancy - would love to go to the art fair, but don't think that walking that much would be advisable this year. Maybe next year?
Irene -
Hi Everyone
Well, I made it through my first treatment!!You were right Irene it wasn't as bad as I expected but I did have a scary moment. I have a port and they said they needed to draw blood from it before they started chemo (I am having taxol right now) but no blood would come out even after several tries. So I had to go have an x-ray taken to make sure it was in place, and it is. The rest of treatment went fine. It's when I got home I had some trouble. I was having cramps really bad and a bout of diarrhea but I took my med for that, took a nap and felt great when I woke up.:) I hope all of you had a fabulous day -
Kristy - Glad to hear you're doing well. It is scary whenever things don't go exactly as planned. For some reason, when having A/C I thought I could feel it when they "pushed" the C, so they thought there was a hole or something in my port. I had to go for the x-ray the next day (they finished it through a vein). Everything was fine with it. I'm thinking is was psychological.
Were you able to see while they were doing the x-ray? I could see mine on a tv screen. Pretty interesting. -
Nancy - I was watching Animal Planet tonight. Have you seen the show Meercat Manor? It's a half hour show on Friday at 8:00 about a pack of meercats. I thought you might be interested. They sure are cute!
-
I watch Meerkat Manor and always think of Nancy.
When we were at the St. Louis Zoo I took this pic. It was the frst time I ever saw a Meerkat & I didn't realize how small they are. They are smaller than even a small cat maybe weighing 5lbs. -
Welcome Mayqueen! Set the clock for those meds and it will be over before you know it.
I watched one episode of Meerkat Manor and I loved it! I thought I could get others on cable "On Demand" but I don't see them. I'm crazy about those meerkats. I read somewhere that they were only about 2lbs. I thought that couldn't be right. They have them at the Toledo Zoo and I would love to go and see them. Anyone want to go on a field trip? My DH doesn't like to see caged critters and won't go to any zoo.
Irene - hope you are up to walking soon. Everything I think of doing involves walking.
I posted some pics for pconn03 - Pat. They are of her grandbabies and herself. They are beautiful. Check them out under the 'Put a face to the name' post. -
They are the cutest things, aren't they? You're right, everything involves walking.
I'd be up for a field trip as soon as I get the okay from my doc. Especially a zoo. My husband feels the same as yours. And I see their point. However, I also think that people care more about animals if they can actually see them. It's hard for a lot of people to get upset about poachers killing animals (and other things the human race does to animals) if they've never seen them in person. So as long as the animals are well cared for, I don't have a problem with zoos. Although I prefer ones like Detroit's that don't have actual bars. Better for picture taking, also.
So if you don't mind going with someone who wants to stop and take photos (and I suspect you'd be doing the same), I'm game. Although cooler weather would be good. Hot flashes when it's 90 really suck. -
ArmyNavyMom and Mayqueen-Welcome to the MI group. We hope to meet you in person at an upcoming luncheon. Speaking of which...how about a Saturday or Sunday in September ladies? We always talked about having one at a park...what do you think?
I love those pictures of the grandbabies Pat...I simply can't wait to me a grandma! They are so very very cute!
Kats-I just received the package...thanks! I am going to try to look at it now.
Wishing all of you well!
-
I met with my Medical Oncologist, Dr. Joanne Huben yesterday for the first time. Is anyone else her patient? I'd like to chat, probably off-line. Thanks everyone.
P.S. If you are able to answer me on this, I might not get back to you until the weekend - bilateral mast tomorrow (Thursday). Thanks again. -
ArmyNavyMom-Sorry I can't help you with the oncologist. Is she part of the Cancer Care group? I treat with Dr. Stender out of that group. I too went thru Troy Beaumont for my surgery and then followed with Royal Oak for the radiation. I just found out that my surgeon (Dr. Pettinga) moved out of state. All is all...I think it is an excellent hospital. Good luck with your surgery tomorrow.
Kats-Wow...what a video. Many thanks...you did a fabulous job! -
Hello MI survivors, I'm in the Jackson area-anyone else from around here?
Hugs,
Dawn -
Not Me - I didn't know you went to CCA, too. That's where my onc is. Dr. Z. I'm still considering changing. I've been putting it off since it involves another appointment and I'm trying to go a while without one. Love Beaumont, though. Both of them.
ArmyNavyMom - Looks like you're going to the same place as Not Me and me. Don't know Dr. Huben, though. The main reason I'm considering going somewhere else is because they make you fill out those forms listing symptoms, meds, etc. every time and my onc has never once asked me about anything I've written down. I have no idea if she even looks at it. Makes me a little nervous - like is she going to miss something important? And she did an about-face about what hormonal therapy I should be on between my last appt and the one before.
Hope everything goes well on Thursday.
Hi Dawn - welcome to the Michigan thread. I'm not sure if there's anyone from Jackson.
I'm up for lunch any time.
Kats - great job on the slide show! Thanks! -
Yep, I'm going to CCA. I agree about the Beaumonts (especially after some horror stories a friend was telling about a visit to another local hosp).
I am very happy with my surgeon, Dr. Eric Brown, and he was the one who sent me to Dr. Huben. But during the initial consult, she just seemed so much more pessimistic about my case. I can't put my finger on exactly what it was she said, but I left her office a complete mess Tuesday.
On reflection I've come to the conclusion that maybe it was just the realities of chemo. I've sort of mentally been taking this one step at a time - get done with the surgeries before I worry about what's next. Meeting with Dr. H (and Dr. Stromberg the next day) didn't allow that. I don't know.
There's so much to learn - I feel like we should at least get an Associates Degree in Cancer out of all this stress! -
My surgeon, Dr. Ruark, recommended Dr. Z to me, which has been the main reason I've stayed so far. Did you bring someone with you? If yes, what was their opinion? You don't need anyone who is pessimistic, that's for sure.
If, after your next appt with Dr. H, you don't feel 100% sure about her you may want to try a different onc.
Hope your surgery went well.
Irene -
Chris, Irene & Tonya,
Glad you guys received & enjoyed the slide show.
Kay, I mailed you one today.
I have a questions for you all. Have any of you been to Holland, MI? If so, what can you tell me about it? We're thinking about going up there for a 4 or 5 days in mid August. A guy Bob works with loves it there and goes back every year for vacation. We were going to go to WI but if Holland MI is better we'll change plans.
Mary (kats)
