O/T here is a picture of Denise I took today.
She wanted me to take some pics of the spring flowers I planted for her last fall while she was in treatment.
I think she looks like a movie star (but don't tell her I said so)lol~
Next time I am at her house I am going to put it in her Avatar for her.
hugs,
Carrie -
You're right, Carrie - she DOES look like a movie star - a very beautiful one! The flowers look pretty, too! Thanks for sharing the picture!
hugs,
vicki -

Hi everyone, I was born on 6/16/51, so I'll be 55 this June. We went to a Catholic school in Northfield, IL (northern suburb of Chicago). One year our teacher (a nun) decided that everyone should dress up as their patron saint for Halloween. So naturally everyone was dressed as a priest or a nun. My mother tried to get me to use that for trick or treating. I told her "No way", so poor mother made me a second costume for after school.
I was the oldest of seven kids, so it was always a zoo around our house. My Dad took a job at Kaiser Aluminum at the end of 6th grade, so we took the oceanliner "The United States" for the move. As we were walking around the deck we met the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. I had no clue who they were but my mother told me after they spoke to my parents. A year later in history class our teacher told me, "Edward VIII was king but he abdicated to marry Wallace Simpson. He is now known as the Duke of Windsor." I said, "We met them on the ship." The teacher asked if they were beautifully dressed and my dad said, "I'm sure they were."
We moved to London in July of 1963, just a few months before the Beatles became popular in the U.K.
Kennedy was killed while we lived there and Churchill died. We went to Trafalgar Square to watch Churchill's funeral procession.

I was born in 1956. Just the other day, because of the smell of freshly cut grass and the way the sun was beating on the sidewalk as I was walking into the hospital for my herceptin, it made me think of childhood and I remember
- wearing saddle shoes -- white with the blue band and my mother using white shoe polish to keep them "clean"
- wearing skorts in summer
- being in my swimming pool most of a summer day
- colouring books and a box of Crayola with the 64 colours
- connect the dots colouring books
- Besty McCall dolls and other paper dolls
- my Chatty Cathy doll
- Toni home permanents (& my mother NEVER timing that right -- I'm sure I was the first white girl with an afro in 1966!)
- pink spongy curlers
- my mother giving me "kiss" curls with bobby pins
- watching "Mary Poppins" at the theatre and singing "Supercalafragalisticexpialadocious" until I drove my parents insane!
- chewing a whole package of Thrills gum (shudder!!) and saving it on my bed table so I could chew it the next day (what was I thinking?!?)
- shoestring licorice and penny candy (some things were 3 for a penny!)
- big coolers in stores with ice and water to keep soda cold (and how Orange Crush tasted so much better then)
- going to birthday parties and getting a "goodie bag" in a little plastic basket
- homemade cinnamon toast -- with butter, brown sugar and cinnamon
- plasticene and home made play dough with flour, water, food colouring & salt that my mother kept in an old mayo jar (until it would dry out)
- homemade birthday cakes with money inside
and mostly, being innocent, taking life for just what it was without question and being happy in my little world. That little girl is still somewhere tucked safely inside me -- she comes to the surface every now and then, just to say hello. -
This is my sister and I when we were 2 and 3 yrs.old
sitting on our grandma's couch......
Carrie & Denise
Sherry I had a chatty cathy too , and sponge rollers
and I forgot all about the home made play dough
I use to love barqs soda pop my father would bring it home
one of each flavor yummm!
In the winter our Mom would make a mixture of PDQ and carnation evaported milk and put it in an tupperwear container so when we got home from school we could make instant chocolate milk.
Notice our shoes Sherry...
and hey who cut our bangs !!
Carrie -
dolls you
are...both of you
then and now
I have to figure
this picture posting tomorrow
time to post our old photos

Carrie, I love the photo of you and Denise!! And I love your shoes. I can still smell the Kwiki polish my mother used ~ a liquid with an applicator that had a long handle and a "ball" on the bottom ~ and the smell!! You could probably have inhaled it to get high!!
I was up until past 3:00 a.m. last night, couldn't stop my brain and all these things from the past came floating to the surface and I actually got up and wrote them down. They may have been shared here already but here's what my insane mind was thinking about last night ~
- singing songs as a young girl, hanging around with my friends ... "ring around the rosie", holding hands, skipping in a circle and falling in heaps to the ground; "here we go round the mulberry bush"; "miss polly had a dolly"; "polly put the kettle on"; "I'm a little teapot" and doing all the movements...do children today even know those songs? Do they still sing these things?
- singing "Puff the Magic Dragon" and just liking the song ~ not having any clue whatsoever as to what it meant, or why my mother thought it "inappropriate young lady"!!
- watching programs like "Romper Room" and singing the songs and doing exercises like "bend and stretch, reach for the stars, there goes Jupiter here comes Mars", only I thought Jupiter was "you better"; and at the end of the program, the teacher would hold up the big mirror that was all covered over and as she sang it would move in swirls and she'd say in a sing song voice "romper, stomper, domper do, tell me, tell me, do I see you?" and the thing would open to her face and I'd hope and pray she'd say she could see me, but she never did ... I had no idea my mother would have had to write to the program to have my name said and I never told my mother I wanted to hear my name ... (first lesson I wish I had learned much much earlier in my life ~ speak up if you want/need something, no one reads minds!!).
- watching "Captain Kangaroo" with his friends Grandfather Clock, Mr. Greenjeans, Teddy Bear and Bunny Rabbit.
- loving to watch "I Love Lucy" re-runs, and watching Shari Lewis, Petticoat Junction, my mother's 15 minute soap operas which would be on at lunch time ("Search for Tomorrow" and "As the World Turns"), "The Patty Duke Show" and being amazed that there were 2 people who looked so much alike!!, and "The Real McCoys".
- cartoons like "The Flintstones", "The Jetsons", "Popeye", "Beany & Cecil"
- eating Jiffy Pop popcorn
- all the commercials on tv with their cute jingles ~
Pepsodent
Brylcreem
Bromo Seltzer
Alka Seltzer
The Ajax White Knight
Aqua Velva
Oscar Meyer Weiners (which we couldn't even buy in Canada!)
and the Frito Bandito
When I sing some of these jingles or songs from old tv programs my kids think I'm slightly nuts but they laugh along with me and I'm glad my "past" can be a source of entertainment! -
Sherry,
We must be close in age as I share your memories too
My Mother would set up the ironing board and remove her dampened laundry from the refrig. and get her spray startch
during the soap opera's, for lunch she would often make
mrs. grass soups ,We thought because of the name and the green spices in it we were eating grass and we liked it
D you remember the song cecil use to go around singing
R-a-g-g-m-o-p-p- ragmopp
I taught my kids some of the songs of my childhood , but maybe because they had more to entertain themselves with they did'nt go around sing them as much as we did?
I taught my little granddaughter bend and stretch
Red light Green light was a big one in our neighbor hood
Mother may I, and red rover, red rover . How about hop scotch You would see them drawn all over the side walks,
or chinesse jump rope.
Thank you for the reminders again Sherry,
so fun to go back again.
hugs,
Carrie -
OMG Patti...bogarting? hahahahaha I'm still bogarting hahahaha...did you know it's an antiangiogenetic? Yup. Got the reports right here hahahah....
Great thread...fun reading...I can relate to a lot here...wore the mood rings, platforms, split-six packs while listening to Pink Floyd in my friend Vinny's loft...so many memories my head is swimming...hated dodge ball and disco...
"Smoke on the Water"...now that's in my head forever...oh, hahaha anyone remember The Good Rats? -
I DO remember singing r-a-g-g-m-o-p-p "Ragmop"!! I'd forgotten that!
We played red light, green light, and Mother May I and Red Rover ~ all summer long. Hide and seek and tag of course and "truth or dare" ~ that was mostly the older, teenagers who played that so if you were "allowed" that was really an entry to another world. First time Ronnie Hawkshaw was dared to kiss me I nearly passed out...little did he know I was madly in love with him...then again maybe he did!
I remember going to cottages and barbecuing over a pit, or an old, round barbecue on legs that you had to use charcoal briquettes and light them with ligher fluid. If you didn't have just the right amount and were too heavy handed, "poof" it would explode. Or not enough and you waited forever to eat! Singing all those old camp and girl guide songs around the fire at night, roasting marshmallows and how you'd hope to light them on fire to get that just right burned taste...the gooey taste...
My parents smoked and had lighters that worked using flint that came in a package...
And ironing ~ oh did that bring back a memory. My mother would also roll up the shirts and put them in the refrigerator and then sprinkle them with water she had in a soda pop bottle that had a cork lid, with aluminum top that had holes for sprinkling ~ and her trusty can of spray starch.
I can't believe sitting here going over those old memories and thinking to myself as a kid while my mother and her friends would do that ~ how "old" they were and like how could you possibly think back like that!! And here I am!! -
