They are desperate to stop those exchanges. Because, as we have already seen with a couple of states, the real numbers re cost and coverage are going to be very popular. They can't lie about it anymore once it's out there and available for purchase. The insurance companies have been gouging smaller employers and private individuals both. When we have access to a side by side comparison of coverage and cost they will be forced to compete with each other. And the numbers of customers in the exchange market will be too large to walk away from. It's exactly why the Federal Employee Health Benefit Program (which it is modeled after) works. When a company gets too expensive or gets a reputation for denying claims, their customers switch to another company. They know it's game over once the real info becomes public.
Waving at Athena! Hope you are purring more comfortably now. I wish you had some pills that made you feel that good too! The only thing pain pills ever did for me was give me stomach pains ... never an ounce of whoopy. Bummer isn't it.
Hi Bren! Hope that headache has gone away. Too bad the darn grass seems to grow overnight this time of year. That was the only good thing about the drought ... at least we didn't have to mow all the time.
Have enjoyed checking out the houses and flowers. And cutie patootie grandsons and handsome 'baby boy' too

Oh oh, bad news for the TPGOP: the stock market at an all-time high yesterday, house prices up 11% over this time last year, and consumer confidence rising like crazy. What to do, what to do......
Alyson, I sent you a pm.
-
It's all faked, CFC. Faked stock market, faked reporting, faked polling. Don't you know how Obama works by now?
-
E, don't you just love faking it all the way to the bank! Sure hoping we keep Dems in the WH for the next 20 years. I need that retirement account to keep soaring!

According to TPM and the Crazylady:
Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), a leading figure within the tea party movement and a 2012 Republican presidential candidate, announced in a video message released Wednesday on her website that she will not seek re-election next year in Minnesota's sixth congressional district.
Bachmann, who was set for another re-match against Democratic hotel magnate Jim Graves in 2014, insisted that the decision had nothing to do with her electoral prospects. She narrowly defeated Graves last year and, facing a number of campaign finance investigations into her presidential bid, was considered potentially vulnerable. Bachmann also denied that the campaign finance probes played any role in her decision.
"This decision was not impacted in any way by the recent inquiries into the activities of my former presidential campaign," Bachmann said in the video.

CforC this is some of the best news I've heard for awhile!

-
She'll still try to stay in the limelight as much as possible - but she's made a bundle off of her "work" in the government, so she's gettin' while the gettin' is good....
-
C for C, I saw the Backmann announcement on t.v. this morning. I think it is likely the sanest and smartest thing this yo-yo has ever done. Despite what she said, I do think it has come out a number of times that she was not 'minding' the store where finances were concerned and was not "paying" some of those that were owed for work produced on her behalf. Glad to see her go.
Wabbit....great explanation of the insurance exchange. A healthy system for productive competition. It makes the world go around which is not something the Repugnants want to see happen for everyone. Just for them.

Alyson - what a HANDSOME young man, who looks very very much like his beautiful mom. Belated Happy Mother's Day. You inspired me to find some of my books about Sissinghurst, great rainy day reading - yup, still raining. And going to be int he 90's by Friday - humid, BLACK FLIES ( does anybody else get these little demons?) and very leggy tomato sun golds waiting to get into the ground!!!!
James Carville was SO funny re: MB, "we'll miss her."
Enjoyful - phew....sounds like it was a terrible accident - TOXIC. Ellicot City is one of my favorite places, or it used to be years ago, don't know what it's like now. Reports saying Rosedale is in "industrial" area - but that cloud of toxic smoke, sometimes I swear we can hear the Earth crying.

At this moment, Republicans have noses that even Pinocchio would be ashamed of, but they’re not only liars, they’re hypocrites too.
In their effort to smear and obstruct President Obama at every turn, Republicans have told lie after lie to advance their agenda. And a new study proves it, Salon reports.
A new study conducted by the Center for Media and Public Affairs at George Mason University shows that Republicans lie three times more to the American people than Democrats do.
The study reveals that 32% of Republican statements have been rated ‘false’ or ‘pants on fire’ by Politifact, an organization that fact checks claims made by politicians and others. In stark contrast, only 11% of statements made by Democrats received the same ratings.
According to CMPA President Dr. Robert Lichter,
“While Republicans see a credibility gap in the Obama administration, PolitiFact rates Republicans as the less credible party.”
Indeed, for many months now, Republicans have been on the war path against the Obama Administration, attempting to somehow link the President to alleged scandals Republicans have been overblowing in an effort to convince Americans that the GOP has been credible all along. And really, Republicans have been trying to make anything a scandal that they can use against the President, which has been largely detrimental to their own popularity decline among Americans.
Earlier this month, a poll revealed that not only did President Obama see a rise in his approval rating, a record 59% of Americans view the Republicans unfavorably. Could it be that the fact Republicans lie more is a cause of their unfavorable rating? Surely it cannot be merely a coincidence?
At this moment, Republicans have noses that even Pinocchio would be ashamed of, but they’re not only liars, they’re hypocrites too. For years, Republicans have aligned themselves with the Christian Right, claiming over and over again to be true Christians who obey the Bible while liberals are supposedly godless heathens. As it turns out, lying violates the ninth commandment which forbids giving false testimony. How can Republicans claim to follow the Bible when they can’t even obey that simple command? It’s just something else in the Bible that Republicans ignore along with loving thy neighbor, feeding the poor, healing the sick, etc…
How many lies will it take before Americans banish Republicans from the political sphere for many hear to come? If the credibility study and favorability poll are any indication, not many at all. Instead of desperately making false claims on the airwaves in an effort to hurt Obama, Republicans would be wise to abandon their agenda and work with Democrats to pass bills Americans support, but since that’s unlikely, I await with anticipation for the next poll that shows that even more Americans hate Republicans and for the 2014 Election when that unfavorability translates into losses for the constantly lying GOP.

Jackie...they're giving Pinocchio a bad name. At least he was cute

-
ya know - you'd think that instead of panning the ACA, that they'd (Republicans) would embrace it. After all, it was their plan. You'd think they'd say something like "see how well our plan is working" "we told you this was the best way to go using free enterprise instead of a one payor system like YOU wanted." They could have take this whole thing and made it a hugely positive thing for Republicans, but it appears that they'd actually prefer seeing the country go down in flames than agree with anything that anyone says who isn't one of "them".
Anyone with a single brain cell had to have known that we've been in recovery mode for quite sometime. Now we are certainly seeing the recovery growing. There are still too many without employment, still too many struggling, and still too many who are under water on their homes - or who lost them altogether - but the country is definitely moving in the right direction.
-
I think we're doing a disservice to conservative Republicans. All of the ones I know are first in line to help a family member, friend, or person they know. It's the nameless, faceless millions of unknown people (who may or may not be taking advantage of government programs) they don't want to help. I can understand that.
The important issue, and the one a lot of Republicans may be missing, is that most of the nameless, faceless millions are just as needy as the ones they help personally. And those millions do not have friends or relatives fortunate enough to help them out. Throw in the words "big government" and you have a recipe for hard-headed, angry denial and calls for bootstrap-pulling-up.
They just think differently. It doesn't mean they're bad people.
-
Conservative Republican POLITICANS are another breed altogether. Hell, any breed of politican who puts politics before people and the running of government should be run out of town, escorted by hordes of pitchfork- and torch-carrying mobs.
-
It's easy to hate people you don't know. It's easy to care about people you know. Caring about people who have just suffered a disaster is also pretty easy. Caring about people who are different from you, who you know might be abusing that care - that is when it gets more difficult. Caring about the nameless and faceless - difficult. Doesn't make those who don't care bad necessarily - but if they lie and cheat in order to convince other people not to care - especially while claiming the moral high ground, that does make them bad in my eyes.
I don't actually, though, think that either Republicans or Democrats are any better or worse than anyone else, but I do think that most of the ultra conservative tend to be more fearful than either moderates or lefties. I grew up in a fundamentalist group - left it when I was in my thirties. People who gravitate to those groups have a very deeply seated "us and them" mentality. They are trained to believe that anyone who isn't one of them is not only against them but is also wicked and from the devil. I was afraid of what would happen when I saw religion begin to drive the Republican party and my fears have materialized. An old school conservative Republican would not be accepted in the Republican party of today. Much as they idolize Reagan - if he was alive now and espoused what he actually espoused when he was alive, he would be called a RINO and would not gain any traction in today's party.
-
Amen to that. I think the sad fact is that many are a loose cannon spouting "facts" not always correct or in evidence and seemed to be more interested in one-up-man-ship or impeaching or something of that ilk. They present often to me of being incapable of learning things or at least understanding. Else-wise, they would make I think way less waves.

one-ups-manship is a really good description, IMO.
-
I'm sure that conservatives are a mix of caring and uncaring people just like everybody else.
The sad truth in my little part of the world is that the most conservative (Teabaggerish) people that I know personally are people who used low interest student loans, union benefits, affirmative action, government jobs and contracts, mommy and daddy's connections, etc. to gain well paying jobs. But they are now happily willing to pull those same rugs out from under the next generation ... all to save themselves paying a few dollars more in taxes. I do.not.like those particular people at all.
I've been lucky enough to never need any help so I guess I can't say on a personal level what any of my (few thankfully) very conservative family members would have done.
Now for all my friends here ... this is talking about you all.
" width="349" height="320" />Oh ... and I saw the new Star Trek movie ... loved it!!
ETA ... I agree with every word you wrote gardengumby. That brand of religion involved in politics was bound to end badly.

Hey guys. Sorry to interrupt the discussion. Just wanted to share that we put one of my cats down today.
I thought he was still a baby at 15 (my cats often live until 18 or 20) but apparently hymalayans don't usually live past 12. I still have his brother and he is doing pretty well. -
Pip, I am so sorry. Sending hugs. Cherish the memory of precious furbaby.
-
So sorry pip
I know it just rips your heart out to lose a furry family member. -
On the sunnier side of the day...
-
So sorry, pip. I lost my Norweigan forest cat when he was 15. So hard.
-
I have never heard of that breed. I looked it up. I see it is another beautiful long haired breed. Beautiful but a lot of grooming, right?
-
Not too bad. I combed him periodically. He loved being brushed. He was beautiful and sweet. After he died, I found out that he'd outlived all his littermates, who'd died between the ages of 12 and 14. So as much as I loved him, I decided I didn't want another that would leave me so soon.
I now have my 9 year old crazy alley cat, who will randomly bite me and who I found in my window sill at age 2 weeks and hand raised, and my very 2 year old beloved tonkinese, which is a long lived breed and I'm hoping to have for another 20 years.
