What are you doing for fun??

Thanks Nancy
Blue and I have a nice bond. My FIL gave him to me because he couldn't live on pasture at the ranch anymore. He had laminitis (basically sore feet) from eating too much rich spring grass. I worked with his hooves and his diet, stripped the weight off him and got him sound. He also has a mild case of a lung disease called Heaves that I treat with a supplement called DMG. I keep him comfortable and he takes care of me. It's a nice partnership.

Chele, how wonderful to have such a strong bond with Blue and to have such fun together. You both are winners in my book. Congrats!

Chele, reading your posts makes me miss my "horsey" days of my youth so much!! I took riding lessons for 10 years...then went "boy crazy" and gave it up. Still used to love to ride a few times a year on trips to state parks (even did a dude ranch trip with family a few years ago), but my onc has said no more riding due to bone mets. Really miss that (and skiing). So it's fun to experience it vicariously through you!!
Can u post some pics of Blue so we can drool? -
Chele - Blue sounds wonderful! What an experience for you every time you ride! You saved him and he saves you!
-
Thanks Tina!
Mary, I'm sorry you had to give up riding. I too have bone mets. My oncs advice about riding? "Don't fall off". I envision landing as a pile of broken bits. If I can figure out how to post a pic I will.
Thanks surfdreams! -

I'm not a horse person but I love your pics and your horse sounds like a gem!

Chele,
Your "blue" pictures always make me smile. Thank you for sharing!

Oh so jealous!! He is a beaut!!! I like your MO's attitude better than mine. I know he is very conservative/cautious and am trying to be a good little patient when he tells me to give up all the "rough" stuff I love, but i am thinking about saying "screw it" sometime in the near future as the stuff like riding, skiing, mountain biking are some of my greatest pleasures in life, and I feel QOL is critical (and esp. since so many of these activities are things I do with my family...some of our fondest "memory making" times!). Hard, though, cause last time I sorta questioned him about skiing he said, "I don't think you want to shatter a VERTEBRA! You'd be in AGONY for about 6 MONTHS!" (He does raise his voice even when he's talking normally as he's Indian, but it's still pretty scary when he does it while speaking about pain).
Thinking I'll give the Xgeva a few more months to hopefully strengthen the bones and then ask again. In the meantime, seeing your pics Chele let's me enjoy it vicariously!! Thanks for posting!! -
The graduation party is approaching, and though I dread the cleaning of the house, making all the food will be fun. Today, I will go to the market to buy the ingredients that we need; some cabbage, carrots, onions, sun-dried tomatoes, etc. Tomorrow my daughter will come over and help me with chopping. There will be lots of chopping. And if all goes as planned, the two of us will chop, and talk, and laugh.
The menu will be two BBQ meats that are being provided by one of her favorite restaurants and then what I make. Looks like haricot vert with hazelnuts and orange salad, potato salad, tortellini with pesto salad, cole slaw [vinegar one, no mayo], baked corn [froze too much Fall corn for Thanksgiving], cornbread [cause the kid wants it], and green tomato relish. I put up the relish last fall. Then we will also have some dill pickles, chips, and salsa. Full range of drinks will hang out in iced buckets so people can serve themselves.
I expect that by Sunday night at 10 I will be totally beat. We are expecting 30 people which is too many for this house.

So I'm leaving Vegas and heading to Nashville to see my 3 month old niece, and I end up sitting behind Scott Hamilton on the flight. I spoke to him and told him that I appreciated the work he does with cancer research, and we continued to talk about the cancer experience for a few minutes. What a nice person, and it is amazing how something as crazy as cancer can create a common ground. As much as I enjoyed the first part of my trip and seeing 3 different Cirque du Soleiol show, this encounter made the whole trip worth it.

Thanks Mary! When I was first diagnosed with mets I had radiation to T9/10. At that time I was cautioned to not do any heavy lifting. For a while I work a back support brace when I rode. But, and this is a big BUTT, I don't have any lesions big enough to compromise the integrity of my bones. I have a bazillion of them all over the place, but they are small. I specifically asked for the Radiologist to state on the report if there were any lesions I should worry about. I hope your Onc can reconsider his recommendation. Some doctors just don't realize we have to LIVE, not just survive. The only think my Onc has told me not to do is push calves down the alley. Actually, he didn't tell ME not to do it (chicken! LOL) he looked at my husband and said "You aren't going to let her do that anymore are you?" because I had humongous bruises on my legs and a calcified swelling on my shin. pft. Long way from the heart - not like I'm going to die from it! LOL Apparently he draws the line at pushing calves.
Sounds like fun Susan!
I'm glad you had a good trip with a great ending nbnotes!

Susan, you've got me salivating again! Enjoy the great day!

This morning hubby, friends, and my two dogs, participated in a 5K walk to benefit a local cancer charity. My oncologist, who is also a breast cancer survivor, was the Honorary Chairwoman (thus the #1 on her bib). She is so wonderful, I'm really lucky to have such a great doctor. Here we are after the walk.
-
Great picture, Nancy! Your oncologist is almost as cute as you are! Didn't realize what a small person you were until seeing you next to her.
-
That is a great picture Nancy, thanks for posting! Jo

Great picture,Nancy! You look like you're about 16!!

We continue to be blessed with gorgeous weather in Rome. Many days we start out to do one thing and wind up doing another. It's become a running joke. We begin to walk what looks like a short distance on the map, then find ourselves saying "Let's see what's down there or over there or around the corner." We walk for hours and hours, sometimes in circles without intending to. I try to take breaks, but it's sometimes difficult to find a place to plop down, so when we head home it is a slow pilgrimage.
Speaking of walking, if I have to have athelete's foot, why can't I have an athelete's body?
I've taken scads of photos and have tried to share one or two here via Photobucket but wind up stymied by the process. Can anyone walk me through it step by step? Maybe via another free "cloud" service? Could I try Dropbox? I am on a MacBook and use an ancient version of iPhoto.
Off to Tivoli--maybe!

Tina, what a wonderful description of how each day in Rome unfolds. Some of my best travel moments happened just that way. A wrong turn and you see something wonderful.
The party last night was GREAT!!! We had about 35 people here. No, the room was not enough, people were eating on the stairs, but such great energy. My daughter has a wonderful group of friends collected over 15 years, plus friends of mine who have known her since she was 5, and of course, family. I forgot to take a picture of the food tables, but they were overflowing. Today, my ankles hurt and I am in a beef brisket coma. A great day for the kid. So proud of her accomplishments.

Rome, horses, parties, ahhh such a pleasure to read in here.
-
Tina - I'm so inspired by your trip, you gotta' share tips when you get home and you MUST post pics. Hubby and I were chatting with friends the other night how Rome is the perfect vacation destination, so between that converstaion and your posts, I'm totally obsessing about it. Hubby and I were married in Florence in 2001, so are thinking we should do a vow-renewal in Italy and neither of us have been to Rome. Let's go to Rome, I say! Sounds heavenly!! Of course there may be no budget to go to Rome, but a girl can dream, right?!?
-
Susan, your party was everything I imagined it woud be. I can just imagine the fun/party vibe and incredible food. Can't tell you how much I loved reading your post because I love a good party. I think the best parties are when people are spilling into all corners of the house to eat, drink and have fun. You said that guests were literally sitting on the steps to eat...what an amazing party!! You must share recipes and photos with us!!
-
Susan, our first house was a teeny box on a block of similar structures built in 1941 to house military families who had come to Washington during World War II. I remember our big 10th anniversary party when guests were sitting on the stairs and perched on chair arms, happily enjoying my partner's superb cooking from plates balanced on their laps. Sounds like your event was deliciously similar!
Tina
-
Nancy- love your picture. You're such a cutie!
Susan- I love to go to parties like yours! Congratulations to your daughter and to you!
Tina- Rome sounds like such an adventure! Thanks for taking us all along with you! Can't wait to hear where we go today!
I'm on vacation at the beautiful gulf of Mexico, currently on the balcony having coffee and performing dolphin watch.it's a rough job, but someone's got to do it! -
Gee, surfdreams, that's really tough. Almost as bad as us spending the morning in a gorgeous modern museum seeing the Ara Pacis, an altar to Peace created in 13 BC on one floor, then enjoying an exhibit of knockout Sebastian Salgado photos on another floor, then having a leisurely lunch in an outdoor cafe next to Augustus's massive masoleum.
Rough jobs, but I agree that someone's gotta do 'em. It might as well be us!
