Very lucky indeed Judy. I have Cigna, through my employer,a hospital, and they wouldn't cover my tatts. I know there are many different policies that Cigna has. It would seem my employer went with the cheap version! Oh well, I love my tatts and wouldn't have changed a thing. Best $400 I've ever spent! Good luck.

Even if my insurance doesn't pay much, I'm set on getting tatoos and I know my money will be well spent.

Can I ask all of you how and why you chose tats vs nipples?

I'm at the beginning of trying to decide which would be better for me. My husband says whatever I want but need to gather information. Thanks much!

I plan to do both as well.  It is so easy to dim the headlights, if needed for a particular top.  The tats will simply be the icing on my new cakes, er girls.

I am doing both also... I had spoken with Vinnie a LONG time ago when he charged $350 for bilateral... so ouch on the $600...

The insurance side of things is so individual... I am out of network, sort of... I have Three Rivers which is a third party and in-network with the Center... and they process my Aetna claims. So it is a contracted rate and works off my out of network benefits. Very confusing.

My out of network is NUTS I couldn't afford to go out of network. Will you have a large payment due? Yikes!

Catie - Vinnie now charges $600 cash.  I am not sure what the woman who is now working with your docs charges, but you might ask.  She has studied with Vinnie.  Her name is Renee and she is from Florida, but travels to Charleston once a month.  It is a chunk of change, but . . .

Catie - By the time you are ready for the tats, pricing could change.  I believe you are supposed to wait at least 4 months after your last procedure before you add the tatoos.  On my personal schedule, my last procedure will most likely be in December so I won't be ready til April 2014.  Gives me time to save.

The scheduling lady in NOLA said it needed to be 12 weeks since your last procedure. So hoping I get to keep my December appointment. Waiting for things to settle and I think I'm going for headlights since I need one more procedure to tweak things anyway. Time will tell.

Catie2013.... I never gave it a second thought about passing on having nips. My ps was a bit surprised but for me it just didn't make sense. I didn't want any more surgery and didn't want something more there that I couldn't feel. There was no point, no pun intended. I did however, want to be able to look and the mirror and at least have the illusion of real breasts. The tatts do that for me. And I don't ever have to worry about the headlights, something I was always trying to hide!

Everyone has their own reasons why or why not. You gotta go with what's right for you.

I just have to decide what is right for me!!!! Lol

So far happy with trusting my instincts - and so leaning on no need for headlights but wanting to know why people choose to or not to to hear all the arguments for or against before I actually get there!

I so appreciate each persons input!

Catie I neer hiesitated my instinct was to get the nipples. I wanted to be back to as normal as possible. I always had small nipples , never had headlight issues. My new nipples don't show in my clothes with a bra on. Even braless they are very subtle. One side came out great the other flattened out a lot. I am going to get tattoos, planning on a trip to NOLA to see Vinne Meyers and enjoy some crawfish to celebrate.

I had my appointment last December with Vinnie in NOLA. Am 1000% satisfied 😀

I have Cigna insurance as well and the clinic called the insurance and called me back 4 weeks before the tatts to let me know that it would be covered with a copay. I was surprised when I got the bill afterwards that all was 100% covered except my $20 copay! I would have paid more now that I see what a difference Vinnie made in my life. I still tear up when I look in the mirror. The tatts are beautiful!

kiango that is wonderful. I don't have insurance jsut medicaid and I am sure it won't be covered so paying out of pocket. My husband wants to go to NOLA for a vaca so I am going to save up some money to get my tatts and celebrate down there. I could probabaly find someone here in Kansas City to do it cheaper but I am thinking it will be worth it.

Carrol... Just so you know, the Center where Vinnie works can give you discounted rates at local hotels... It makes a HUGE difference. And try flying Southwest Airlines if you can. Their rates are pretty low.

Thanks for the heads up Betsy. I will check into that when I make my appointment. We are going to drive down, DH doesn't like to fly. It's about 14 hours from Kansas City. It's a long drive, DH is used to doing those kind of drives in a day,  and a lot cheaper than two airline tickets.

I'm scheduled to see Vinnie week after next at NOLA, and second-guessing whether I need a little surgical "lift" first. Stage 2 DIEP with Dr. S was in Dec, and I have asymmetry: the prophylactic side has some sag to it and lacks projection. I'm sure Vinnie is creative enough to make the tats look level even if the breasts aren't quite level, thus minimizing the unevenness. But if he makes them look level, then I decide to get a lift later, it will make the tats look uneven. I sent pictures to to the PA and called the Center and talked it through. Dr. S suggested I could get a minimal lift surgery (incision in inframmary fold to define the crease better plus take a dart to help projection, as an outpatient surgery) followed by tats the same or next day. I just found out that Dr. S is not available near the day of my appointment, so I'd have to reschedule to when he and Vinnie are both available -- perhaps a few months later when DH might not be available to accompany me.

To complicate this decision, my insurance changed this month to omit out-of-network coverage, so I will have to pay for everything out-of-pocket. The Center will get me a price by the end of this week. Also, Vinnie's fee is due by the end of this week if I continue with tats only, as scheduled.

I guess I should add it's not just "looks" that concern me. The lower band of bras cross over the sloping edge of the sagging breast, becoming uncomfortable. Soft bras won't work because they reveal the asymmetry through clothing. I supposed I could live with the asymmetry, but I don't prefer it after all this surgery! Yell

I have really looked forward to getting these tats by Vinnie and being all done with recon, but now I have this mini-dilemma. Dare I go ahead with tats as scheduled and not think about a lift at all? Should I postpone everything and have the 2-part surgery/tats later assuming I could afford the out-of-pocket charge? There is a PS in-network locally who could do this lift and she does her own tattooing, but will it be as good as Vinnie's? I've had her in mind as "plan B" if I couldn't go to NOLA for whatever reason. But I'd rather have Dr. S do any touch-up to his own recon, and Vinnie has such a stellar reputation.

Making myself a little crazy over this. Ideas?

Ann - well, since you are having issues with a bra on the slightly sagging side, my inclination would be get it fixed by Dr. S. Introducing another PS at this point might create more challenges than fixes.  I have had tatoo (many years ago) by a PS and it was nowhere near what Vinnie does.  He specializes in tatoos and a PS would only be doing them as an add-on.  What if you find a date when your DH can go with you to NOLA to get your "fix" and then do the tats later, even if you wait a year and go as an end of repairs celebration.  That would give you time to save the current $600 cash for Vinnie and time for the final breasts to settle in.  Just some thoughts.

Ann... I want my tats too... But I am having one more surgery with Dr D in November, and will then have tats (probably another trip down in 2014.)... But I know I don't want tats and then any more surgery. I want the tats to be the LAST thing I do, like icing on the cupcake and then the cherry. If I put the cherry and then more icing, I will mess it up. Sorry... couldn't help myself... So I say if you aren't 100% happy, cancel Vinnie, and schedule Dr S ASAP (hopefully before insurance changes - or has that already taken effect?) Then do Vinnie later. Or if insurance has already changed, then book the two part tweak when they are both available.... Can't imagine its too expensive as out-patient.

Ann, You should check and see if your insurance will cover you, under the Continuity of Care.  Look at your evidence of coverage and see what it says. Maybe you can appeal it and have them pay.

Thanks for your thoughts, Marty. I have that concern about introducing a local PS to the mix. I trust the docs at the Center and wonder if Dr. D or Dr. T could/would step in for this lift if scheduling works out better. I'll aim for Dr. S, of course. I'm having trouble coming to terms with not being all done in 2 weeks. Yeah, I guess I should focus on getting the fix first and then tats optional when it works out. Evidently, Vinnie is already scheduled out to Aug-Sept in NOLA.

Betsy, thanks for your input - very funny. Cool  Waiting to see what the cost will be (insurance change is in effect, so I would pay the flat fee they quote me -- they should be able to collect some more from my in-network benefits for anesthesia/OR). I'm hoping somehow the "two part tweak" could be affordable and available during the summer when DH is off work. I hope your guess is right about it not being too expensive as an outpatient.

Gale, is the Continuity of Care provision for changing insurance companies? I actually continued on the same Aetna Gold plan from  DH's employer, but they raised the premiums and took away out-of-network benefits on Apr 1. Not an April Fool joke, but reality. Frown But the out-of-network had a pretty high out-of-pocket max anyway. The Center was checking my new card and didn't seem to think I had any coverage for them now.

I accepted the NOLA Center's quote for a two-part tweak, paying out-of-pocket since I lost out-of-network coverage. So I gave up my May appointment with Vinnie, and will instead have an outpatient lift revision for symmetry in July, followed by Vinnie's art the next day. The new incisions won't be in the exact area where the tats will go. Is this called a stage 2b or 3? I hope this will really be the finish line for my recon, so thankful they were able to coordinate the schedule!
