What are you doing for fun??

Thx for the tips, brandall!! May sound kind of maudlin, but would love to make a really nice scarf for DH and each kiddo to remember me by. Although my 16-yr old son probably won't wear it for many years, if ever!!
How long would u guess it would take a beginner to do a VERY basic scarf? -
Planning my next little trip for the 3rd week-end in May. We're going to Greeneville, Tenn. My sister is a Jeweler there and has a booth at the Iris Festival that week-end. I love arts and crafts festivals. Usually cant get dh to go, but this one is different, cause he can stay behind and fish in a pond that hasnt been fished in years, so hes kind of excited too. Something to look forward too....

Caryn - as the mother of a first grader, I can say that teaching first grade is an accomplishment in an of itself! You must be exhausted when you get home. I know that I'm exhausted at the end of the day because my little first grader is quite the talker!
Glenna - When I lived in the DC area, I LOVED walking the Tidal Basin when the cherry blossoms were in bloom, so beautiful. Didn't like all the tourists that crowded up the metro, but loved the pretty blossoms. I also loved that it usually wasn't humid yet, just beautiful weather. Happy 40th anniversary!
Marymoir - I think if you dedicated a lot of your evenings to a basic scarf that you could easily get one done in 2 weeks or less. Scarfs are actually quite easy because there aren't any increases or decreases, it's a great project for a beginner
Marywh - I love planning trips, it's so exciting. I hope that when you actually take the trip, you have a lovely time.
We are hoping to do some geocaching with the kids this weekend. They love hunting for "treasures" and it's a good way to get our whole family out of the house and outdoors! The snow from our 14+ inches is finally melted (love the sun in Colorado) and we have to get out and enjoy the nice weather before the next round of snow hits on Monday and Tuesday. Where is spring?

Just watched Elizabethtown feat. Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst & Susan Sarandon. Felt GOOD!

I live a couple of miles from a beautiful arboretum. (Just like Joni Mitchell said, they took all the trees and put 'em in a tree museum...)
Anyway, it's my favorite place to get away from it all. There are lots of trails of varying length, so even if I'm low on energy I can still handle one of the short loops.
I decided a couple of weeks ago to walk the same prairie path at the arboretum once a week, in order to watch it change through the seasons. They burned the prairie off last fall, so right now the path winds through an empty field that's mostly bare and brown, with just a few shoots popping up. Soon it will be green and lush.
I also have plans to take up birdwatching. Last week I bought a field guide from Amazon that includes bird illustrations as well as recordings of all their calls. At this point I barely can tell a robin from a blue jay, but once the weather warms up a little I think it will be fun to sit out on the deck and try to identify some of the birds and their songs.
In the meantime, the bird recordings have been providing quite a lot of amusement to our cats. -
As I have mentioned elsewhere, since March 8th, life has been rough here in the 02143 household. My father died rather unexpectedly on that day, then I had surgery to remove my thyroid, and then my mother-in-law passed. You know, you can't plan for a five week period like this.
So, where is the fun? The fun is that my daughter is about to graduate with her Master in Mental Health Counseling in three weeks and will begin her doctorate in the fall. In my opinion, this is a reason to celebrate! I am party planning. I have actually ordered the proteins from a local BBQ restaurant [a huge thing for must-do-it-myself-susan.] Since I don't care for their sides, that will be my job. So far, I am planning to make an orzo-pesto salad, potato salad, cole slaw, and a huge green salad with a toppings bar. Will buy lemonade, some hard bubbly drink the kid likes, and beer. I will make the iced tea since buying iced tea is just plain silly.
Ack! Dessert. I don't actually eat dessert much, but maybe my daughter, the queen of cupcakes, would whip up a batch or two for the event.
We have invited too many people for the size of our house. We will just have to wish for good weather so that folks can meander around the postage-sized back yard.

MartyMart - the arboretum sounds delightful! So nice you are able to get out and endjoy the various trails and will be taking up birdwatching. I'm laughing at the comment of your cats enjoying the bird recordings, too funny!
Susan - sorry for the rough time you've been through the past couple months, but so happy to hear you are celebrating your daughter's graduation with a party. You should post photos and recipes (you sound like a pretty amazing cook and entertainer). Love the idea of ordering some of the food, then making the rest. If cupcake daughter doesn't feel up to it, you could always load up on goodies from Costco (do you have Costco in MA?), I think they have some pretty amazing desserts and their cakes are to die for.

Everyone's adventures sound great.
Susan, you are more than due a good time. Congrats to your daughter and have a fabulous party.
I know that not all of you are big fans of cancer fund raising events but I spent a good bit of my weekend at the Cambrian (CA) Relay for Life. This is our 6th year and I have participated in all of them, though this was only my second year as a survivor. I don't mind being called a survivor because that's what I am so far, though, ultimately I won't be. I participate with a team composed of teachers from my school. We sold fused glass heart pendants, which we made on a margarita fueled Friday evening and hot cocoa too, in addition to the donations we solicited. Our team raised almost $5,000 and the entire event raised over $200 thousand. It is held on the grounds of one of our middle schools and the whole school district as well,as the community at large is involved. It is an event that is both joyous, sad, moving and hopeful. The captain of the team that raised the most money was a 7 year old second grader who attends my school. She lost her mother to bc in January. She is simply amazing. I know this is not everyone's cup of tea but I am awed and inspired by it each year.

Caryn - loved reading about your Relay for Life event. So uplifting! Thanks for sharing.

Good stuff, all. Delightful, inspirational and--in one notable instance--positively mouth-watering!

Spring has finally sprung in CT. At least today! Sunning on the back deck with my steroid enhanced body and my bald head!
. But still enjoy the sunshine...so there!
-
MartyMart, we also live very close to an arboretum. Now I am inspired to visit the place, thanks for the idea!
Susan, I somehow missed your news, my sincere condolecenses. You had some tough time for sure. You MUST be looking forward to the party & my congrats to DD. Another milestone to enjoy for you, happy news!! Here's to many more..
Caryn, I remember you mentioning that kid losing her mom before. She's lucky to have you around her, maybe not in your class. I had a BC survivor teacher in highschool who was so supportive of me when I had HL. I felt very comfortable when she was around somehow. Great you both participated in such a fund-raising event together, I'm sure it was as meaningful for her as it was for you.
Tina, your avatar is enough for me to smile each time I see it
.
Jill, I can't imagine you bald, you have to come over for some bubbly Turkish coffee to show your head sometime. The warm weather must have felt great, even on steroids. Enjoy!
I'm looking forward for more sunshine soon!
hugs, Ebru

Don't really care much for Turkish coffee, Ebru, but LOVE the food! Just took my friend out to the Turkish restaurant where my daughter works for her birthday. We shared imam bayildi...my favorite! And yogurt and kazandibi as a complimentary dessert for her birthday! Can't wait to go back. My daughter often brings me leftovers..usually just bread...but I love that too!
-
Salve, signore! I had my monthly Faslodex injections and blood draws today. Ow, ow and OW. But so what? I am now ensconced on the couch with a bag 'o books and maps at my side, trying to cram for our Roman adventure which begins Monday!!!
Tina
-
Mom's the Master of Imam Bayildi, you HAVE to taste it, trust me, not because she is my mother! Come over..:) And she cooks great cancer-food, with my swollen lips & mouth ılcers, I was able to eat anything she prepared for me last summer while on Taxotere. I push her to publish her recipes, it would be bestseller in the cancer-world!

This thread has been awfully quiet lately. Just stopping into wish everybody a happy Mothers Day and hope everybody has a great time. Dh got me a new digital camera for m.d so Im going out tomorrow to practice.
-
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ALL ! Hope you all have a wonderful day.
I'm going out to brunch and then going to see the touring production of Billy Elliot in the evening. Nothing makes me happier than a Broadway musical!
Caryn -
At a recent silent auction fundraising event, a friend of mine bid on - and won - a 30 minute flying lesson followed by her assisting flying a 4 seater plane for 1/2 hour. Lucky me! She could take one person along for the flight, so I got to go! So exciting! Had a great time, then came home and snoozed on the couch for 3 hours. I may not sleep now tonight, but it was so fun!
-
I went out today and bought a bird feeder with my Mothers Day gift card. I put it in a spot where I can see it from the deck and the cats can see it from the bedroom window.
The salesman made me laugh when he asked me whether I wanted a one that was squirrel-proof, or one that was "equal opportunity." -
My "fun" stuff has mostly stayed the same. I still ride, still garden, just try to do all I can to enjoy life - which means less time on the computer!
Tonight is the first night of speed events at the Harper County Roundup Club in Buffalo,OK. This will be my 3rd year. I practiced last night and my horse, Blue, was AWESOME! We'll see how my time is tonight.
My Great-Niece that i got the pony for was in town, along with another great-niece that wanted to learn to ride. I put her on my steady-eddy, Blue (yes, the speed event horse - he's a jewel!!) and gave her a private lesson. She didn't want to be embarrassed in front of her cousins by not knowing how to ride. She did great so when the rest of the kids showed up she was able to ride along. I only have a horse and a pony, so they had to take turns. I had a 5yo, his Mother, my neice, and the great-neice taking turns on Blue. The pony's girl and her cousin took turns on the pony. It was fun, but I walked a million miles leading Blue! LOL

I'm in Rome! We're overdoing it and having a blast.
The weather is sunny, warm and breezy. Even though it's not yet summer, there are jillions of tourists here, so we try to get off the beaten path as much as possible. That's fairly easy because there are so many things to see and do, and many fantastic museums, galleries and interesting sites that are not at all crowded.
Tina

Tina, have a fantastic time!! I was in Rome in September last year and had such fun
-
Chele - so excited for you and Blue!! Please share how it goes and pics if you can. What a cool life you have, living with horses. We talk about the bucket list...when I was a little girl I was obsessed with horses, but was always too much of a city girl that it was never an option. Love living vicariously through you!!! If you get a chance, please share photos.
Tina - enjoy Rome, it sounds so exciting! Love to see your photos when you get home too!!
-
Hang on gang. Yesterday we visited the Circus Maximus, you know, that huge racetrack by the Colosseum. We noticed dozens of white tents being set up at one end of the field.
A fair? A festival?
No! It's the Race for the Cure, Italia!

Tina,
I love Rome. It is one of my favorite places and I never had a bad meal there. The Pan Am crews stayed at a little hotel very close to the Coliseum. Enjoy your trip.
My union is in contract negotiations with our school district and it's not going well. Our leadership planned for us to show up en mass at the school board meeting last night, protest signs in hand. Not only do I believe in the cause but I was very proud of the strong showing by so many of my colleagues. Mostly, I felt thrilled to be doing exactly what I would have been doing had bc never entered my life. For me, the most fun things are the most normal things. Still, I paid for it. After teaching all day and standing around a packed board room for a few hours, I was achy and exhausted when I got home. Every bone in my body was screaming. I was so wiped out that I forgot to walk my dogs, take my meds and fell asleep with my make up on. Fortunately, I woke up about midnight and took care of those things then swiftly fell back to sleep. How I love normal!

Tina2 - Hope you are enjoying Rome!
I'm in Las Vegas because I really wanted to see several of the Cirque DeSoleil shows here, but unfortunately, I had to leave tonight's show before it was done due to stomach issues. I don't know if its a bug or if its from my diet or what. I've been doing the Mediterranean Diet for the last week & a half, and overall, I'd been feeling really good on it. I just hope it is better by tomorrow night so that I can see the show "o" that is over the water. At least I got to enjoy Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area and the Mob Museum today
Hope everyone else is enjoying themselves as much as possible.
-
Nbnotes- I'm so sorry you had to miss part of your Cirque show! Those tickets are so costly. I hope your issues clear up and you are able to enjoy the rest of your stay.
Where are you staying in Vegas? It's one of my favorite places for a fun weekend. -
Martymart - My sister and I own timeshare together through Wyndham; I am staying in one of those about a mile off the strip.
-
Nancy, we did great! We only placed 3rd out of 6, but the times were tight! My neice won barrels with 20.10, 2nd was 20.13, and Blue and I did 20.4! He was so enthusiastic! On poles we did well, but it was just my neice and I, and as always - she beat me! I might have won if I hadn't blown a stirrup. As we came around the last pole Blue dug in for the power launch and a stride or two after that my foot slipped out of the stirrup. Since I had weight on it while I leaned forward and kicked I kind of landed on Blues neck and he slowed down. No matter how much I kept kicking as I tried to straighten myself he just stayed steady and under me "I'm not going to lose you Mom". Oh how I love that horse. He has no idea how much he does for me.
No pictures though. Nobody bothered to take any!
-
Congrats, Chele! That is so great, especially how you describe Blue keeping you safe. What an amazing horse. Thanks for sharing!!
