His plan sounds like an NRA militia with guards in all our schools. Now what could be the problem with that? Also, what gives him the right to have his armies take over the schools? Who ITH does he think he is?
-
You ladies do remember that LaPierre said that he believed that "Fast and Furious" was an Obama/Holder plot to take away Americans' guns? The plan was that they let the guns go to Mexico and then they would come back into the United States and kill people and the Obama Administration would use that as an excuse to confiscate guns. I think that was the plot, anyway, or something like it. The old crazy meme that they use that every time something bad happens, the Obama Administration did it so that they would have an excuse to Do Something Bad, like confiscate guns or impose martial law or let the UN take over. I'm waiting for that to come up next. I am sure it has someplace, but I don't go to those places.
L -
HL - that sounds paranoid to me. Fast and Furious a plot to take away guns? It's the same thinking as this guy. http://www.mediaite.com/tv/joe-scarborough-explodes-at-rep-huelskamps-assertion-newtown-tragedy-is-being-politicized/
-
Well yes that sounds paranoid, but then again if we were to list paranoid conspiracy theories it would take more time than any of us have at the moment....kind of a big project.
-
So does this mean that the lobbying of the NRA will have no further credibility? Who would heed their messages now?
-
Yes, he actually said that and yes, it is paranoid. I think he needs to be the first entry in his own database of mentally ill people. He said it in an interview with Newsmax (I know, I know, but that was the surce):
http://www.newsmax.com/Headline/LaPierre-NRA-gunrunning-fastandfurious/2011/10/14/id/414545
There is a video if you can stand to watch it.

Their followers, maybe less a few sane few, Lassie. These people are clearly in the minority in America, but they hold incredible political power because of the way our Congressional Districts have been gerrymandered. The NRA, Grover Norquist, etc., hold their jobs in their hands via the Primaries. The crazier my Congressman got, the less votes he got each cycle. The PTB pulled him in 2012 as they weren't sure he could sustain a challenge this time and put in another crazy from state government, otherwise we might have gotten a Congressman with some brains. I live in gun country.
-
The NRA can't say what they really mean. Which is "we don't care how many men, women and children die ... we just love our assault weapons and want to keep them".
I can't think of much scarier than an NRA militia. Some of their biggest supporters that I know personally are batsh*t crazy ... explosive tempers, drink too much. Yeah ... let's put them out there with a friggin arsenal.
Soteria ... I hear you. I'm not sure about Boehner. I can't say that I like him but I don't think he is one of the insane ones. His problem is that no matter what kind of a compromise position he tries to take the 'all my way or nothing' lunatics pull the rug out from under him. No wonder he cries so much.
And they have gone on vacation huh? What a crock.

Eugene Robinson, in the Washington Post:
Where to begin? Let’s assume, for the moment, that we decide to pay the multi-billion-dollar cost of placing one gun-toting officer in every school. What would the officer’s orders be? Shoot anyone who looks suspicious? If not, the officer would wait until an assailant — someone like Adam Lanza — displayed a gun or started firing. What sort of arsenal, and itchy trigger finger, would the officer need to be certain of shooting the assailant before the assailant shot the officer? How many twitchy, furtive, suspicious-looking UPS deliverymen would be tragically cut down in error? So I guess there could be multiple officers in each school. For a glimpse of that dystopian future, recall the shooting a few months ago outside the Empire State Building. A gunman began firing, uniformed NYPD officers responded, they tried to take the gunman down — and nine innocent bystanders were wounded, all by police gunfire. Now imagine that sort of thing happening in a school, and think how many children would be killed by errant shots from police officers’ weapons. Now consider the profile of these mass shooters, such as Adam Lanza. These disturbed young men are meticulous in planning their unspeakable crimes. Does it occur to the NRA that if a would-be shooter knew there would be armed police officers at the school (or movie theater, or grocery store), he might be sure to wear body armor? So will the school cops wear body armor, too? Do we require students to wear uniforms of Kevlar too? -
Lindasa, Lanza did wear body armor.
-
Just to prove the NRA's way won't work:
"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," said NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre.
He went on to call for an armed police officer to be stationed in "every single school" across America to prevent further mass shootings, as critics tried to point out that armed law enforcement officials might not be the panacea the NRA thinks it is.
But before they could finish their sentence, the counterargument made itself as news broke of a mass shooting event in Pennsylvania with multiple casualties, including state troopers.
-
From comments at that link:
"The answer is to have a police officer stationed at every corner of every street and every 100 feet on every, highway, byway, and alleyway. That's what the NRA is basically saying, right?"
-
The current NRA seems to me to be promoting a police state. They need to get some responsible leadership that understands that a childish belief that guns are some kind of almighty cure for everything is foolish ... and is dangerous.
Was just watching out my window as the school bus stopped to let off the neighbor's kids. Bus is stopped with stop arm out. This idiot car coming from the opposite direction not only does not stop but drives on past the bus blowing their horn. WTF is wrong with people?
-
Still here girls.
What scares me, is that if they try to take guns away from the NRA, you might have a civil war.
Good point on the violent computer games - other countries don't have mass shootings like that because no one really owns guns. Kids in our country play these games too.
I'm officially on leave now - having Monday off, so I get 5 days in a row. Back at work on Thursday though. It's been really hectic - our upgrade project is now "red" - they are looking at throwing lots more resources at it.
Very quiet Christmas for us - I guess I'll have to have my mother up - not looking forward to it - the most difficult woman in the universe. When she comes, she turns up at 7 am. I'm going to try and get her to arrive later - probably to no avail. Wish we could see one of our grandbabies for Xmas. We are however organising a Skype conference with our DD and DS this weekend.
The good news is that the markets I go to once a month are on this Sunday. I can get some more of that pain cream. It is SO good. I just managed to make it last 3 weeks. I'm only using it once a day at the moment. I'm going to buy 2 jars, hang the expense. It's been well worth the price to be able to walk without limping.

Suzie,
My DD sets me up on Skype in the corner so I can see the entire room on Christmas morning. I can interact and watch the grands open presents. It is the next best thing to being there! LOVE IT!
We tested it last night. And I got to watch cookie decorating and was read several bedtime stories. It was heaven!!! -
You could do a simulcast. They could be baking while you are baking. Or doing a craft with them. I feel very lucky, my daughter and her beautiful daughters, 10 and 8 months, live in the same town as us. My other daughter is coming tomorrow. I am going to get her to set up Skype so she can be with her significant other who is on a year long secondment to the RCMP in Haiti.
Not in the dining room though. Because of Hurricane Sandy they are experiencing significant food shortages. It affects everyone. Good thing he loves beans and rice! -
Scuttlers - that is so great. Unfortunately, in my case, we are dealing with an evil DIL. We skyped with our son last weekend - baby nowhere to be seen - was put to bed 5 minutes before the call. She's going away to Germany for the weekend with her mother and leaving our son with the baby, so this will be the best time to see him.
Just finished hanging out the washing. Now tell me, what husband can wear 13 shirts in one week? Unbelievable!!! He has been to his boxing/fitness thing a couple of times this week and it is really humid, but 13!!!!!
-
You guys were going so fast. Been out running errands all day.
Anyway, caught a bit of the NRA dog and pony show, which would demean dogs and ponies. Oy. Do even they believe what they're saying?

Hi ladies. We've been in Hawaii for a couple weeks now. delightful. I would really love to move here. My letrozole aches are much diminished. Unfortunately, the woman we rented the condo from lied to us. We are both highly allergic, so NEVER rent anything that has carpets. She told us it was tile throughout - so very much not so. Hubby has been feeling especially bad as he is more susceptible to dust problem than I. We are PO'd about it and will complain after the fact, but unfortunately, as it is a private rental, there isn't anything to be done (much). We did go and purchase a large air filter that we've had running the bedroom. It has helped, but I'd still like to drive some sense into the rental lady. People who don't have allergies just have no clue.
The daily news has been so very depressing. I cannot wrap my head around the thought that anyone needs a high capacity clip or a semi-automatic rifle. I do understand gun ownership, as I've been around guns my entire life and enjoy target practice (though I'm not as good at it as I used to be). One year hubby bought me a rifle for our anniversary.
so I'm not an anti-gun nut - but the NRA leadership is just plain nuts. I'd say the NRA is, but I read somewhere that over 70% of the membership is in favor of required background checks and against high-capacity clips - so I'll not lump them all in the nutso bag - but the leadership? CRAZY!!!As for Boehner and the GOP. So far as I can tell, they figure that since Obama "caved" once, that he will again. I hope he sticks to his guns and we go for a fast short ride. It's going to hurt, but it's better than caving IMO.
Alexandria - love your book, and am looking forward to buying it!! (I have a kindle, so be sure you get it on Amazon!!)
Glenna and everyone else - mental health issues are with all of us and our families. I doubt there are many families who don't have problems somewhere - brothers, mothers, daughters, nephews... Some of us have problems that aren't specifically diagnosed - simply terribly, awfully sad.
Blue - looking forward to seeing pictures of Wendel!
Now I'm going to cheer up and go back to the sunshine.... Whoops - maybe I'll watch our President first, I just saw that he's going to speak in regards to the fiscal cliff....
Then the sunshine.

Hello, GG - I have never been to Hawaii - only seen the breathtaking beauty from pictures. Enjoy!
-
Athena, we're on the Big Island (named Hawaii). It is about the size of Connecticut as far as land mass goes. The scenery is extremely diverse. There are huge swaths of lava flows, many from hundreds of years ago, that are simply amazing. Some gorgeous beaches, but they are relatively few and far between. The mountain tops get snow, while the coast is in the 80's. There are huge ferns that are twice the height of a man. It's a truly astonishing island. Very enjoyable.
-
Nothing more I could add about WL and the NRA and their macho gun lovers policies. Sad that their answer to so many little lives lost is bring more guns to the classrooms. Obviously they don't even hear the ignorant statments that they are spewing forth and are definitely not able to put themselves in the shoes of all those parents whose precious babies are having funerals this week.

GG - How amazing. I have been in two places (both of incredible beauty) where there are different ecosystems co-existing fairly close to one another. It's always just breathtaking.
Watching Rachel Maddow tonight. I am hoping to hear her whistle as if to say "cukoo" at the nuttiness of Wayne LaPierre. She always makes me laugh when she does it. I have been singing the word "nut-so" all day in thinking of that NRA press conference.
Too bad that Bill Maher's new season does not begin until next year. Would also love to see what two of my favorite comedians --Chris Rock and D L Hughley-- have to say.
-
Oh Athena...I've just imagined Rachel Maddow saying "Really?....Really?.....Really?" tonite.
GG - when I use to go to Hawaii, the big island was always my favorite..primarily because it was so much bigger than the others and that much more diverse. Our prez is headed there tonite. Say Hi!
-
That too Kam - lol!
-
The lights are on but nobody's home...........again!

My favourite island is Kauai - have very pleasant memories of our trip there, including being covered in mud after falling down on a walk along the Kalalau Trail.
