    when people tell me i have great hair, i tell them when i am done with it they can have it..it gets a good awkward laugh

    We all bring a gift and then we draw numbers, #1 picks a gift from under the tree and opens it, #2 can either take #1's gift or choose one from under the tree, and on down the line until everyone has gotten a gift.  A gift can only be stolen 3 times then it is frozen and stays with that person.  You always want to bring a good gift and see people try to get it and or even see the couples strategize how to get the gift.  At the end the #1 person gets to pick again and #1 can take any gift whether it is frozen or not.  We had a ladies Christmas party one time and played this, I brought a sexy nightie and it was hilarious.

    I never played dirty Santa and now I would love to try! Have fun in Santa Fe Tina :) I went salsa dancing with old friends 2 days after chemo. They had experienced salsa dancers show us the ropes for the 1st hour then we were on our own for the rest of the night lol. it was loads of fun. I didn't realize salsa dancing was kind of like exercising haha. Although I can feel my body is pretty sore; I would do it again.

    Okay, so here we are in lovely Santa Fe, having as good a time as possible considering that I have a gigando case of altitude sickness. I'm drinking water by the gallon, but moving slowly with shortness of breath on exertion and wheezing for pete's sake! We have been eating well, shopping, visiting many wonderful museums and thencrashing fairly early in the evening. It is high and dry here, so I guess creatures like us who live at sea level and in highly humid climates are prone to this, but boy am I surprised. I've been out here before and recall having no problems, but that was several years ago, pre HBP and mets.



    I'm feeling old and fat and decrepit, but....



    Santa Fe is preparing for Christmas and looks lovely with farolitos on the all the adobe buildings and pine roping wrapped around all the posts on the plaza. It's unusually warm here, but they expect a big drip in temperature and snow this weekend. Alas, we will be gone then. Now to have some ginger tea and see if we can manage the drive to Taos. Hope to be back in town in time for a free holiday concert at the cathedral.

    Well poo,so to speak. Started the day with major runs, then got violently ill on the way to Taos and had to turn back. Can't keep anything in or down. Lying under three wool blankets having chills. This sort of thing is a rare occurrence for me. I'm guessing it's food poisoning. Straight on the heels of altitude sickness it's insult to injury, right down to losing control of my bladder while I upchucked by the side of the road in Chimayo. Ugh!



    Sick on vacation? WTH?!

    My mom is the one with cancer, but I really don't want her to know I'm on this site. She has come to live with us.  My kids are so enjoying her! I just want support.  Mom lives with us and has cancer in her liver and lungs.  The doctor said she is "the poster child for breast cancer".  She was diagnosed Summer of 2012.  She had a mastectomy and is having some success with her third round of medication.  Her cancer is extremely aggressive.  The first medicine we tried gave her a clear pet scan, but only for 5 months.  The second had mixed results.  This one shrank some tumors, but the one in her liver grew just a little.  We consider that a win at this point.  She went to Disney World, Universal Studio, and The Holy Land Experience last month!  She and I regularly look for fun.  Today, it was trying a new Soup to Go restaurant on a dreary day.  There's so much fun to be had.  We do anything we can to not give cancer the spotlight it doesn't deserve!

    Sorry about you mom's diagnosis, but it sounds like she is doing well. If you search "all topics" on this site, you'll find a caregivers forum which might be a great support resource for you. If your mom uses a computer, have her join us here on the stage IV forum because we can be great support for her. Best wishes to you both.

    Tina,

    This is just cruel! Mean and cruel. Food poisoning is such a risk when travelling. You do the best you can and yet, sometimes someone hasn't cleaned the lettuce properly. I am so sorry that you are spending vacation time under three blankets while feeling sick. Gosh, wish there was something any of us could do.

    Maybe tomorrow will be better? I certainly hope so.

    Oh Tina, I am so sorry you are dealing with this. We have been going there once a year for the past 4 years as my DBF's daughter is in Albuquerque with her husband and 4 yr old son & 8mos old daughter. I hope you are feeling better very soon so you can continue to explore the land of enchantment.

    Susan, Kathy et al,

    I'm back home at sea level and feeling mucho better. The trip wasn't exactly ruined, but the constant shortness of breath and whatever made me sick at both ends for a day or two put a definite crimp in my style. I was really surprised. I don't know whether I should blame my lung mets, medication, age or weight or all of the above.

    BUT Santa Fe is lovely at this time of year. And seeing the Tumbleweed Snowman in Albuquerque was just the sort of rare treat I treasure. Details later.

    Tina, welcome home. I look forward to hearing more about your trip.

    Today is a good day. I had a friend and her partner to brunch. We ate very well, and laughed, and then split up a lamb. Tonight we are going to a nice restaurant with my kid and her partner to celebrate my husband's 60th birthday. Somehow we have been celebrating this event for almost a week, and enjoying every moment of it.

    By the time I met this lamb, he had been butchered, frozen and boxed. I bought one of his siblings earlier this Fall, and so we split this one between two families. We sat on the floor, grouped cuts together, and split the bounty. In exchange for the shanks, I got a shoulder steak for example. All in all, it was so very easy. We each wanted the other to feel that they had gotten a fair share, that we both did!

    Tina, totally not fair you were sick on your vacation, glad you are feeling better now.

    Susan - pretty interesting about splitting a lamb.  Happy birthday wishes to your hubby!

    As for me, we hosted a big holiday party for my coworkers last night.  We had over 50 people, which was a little crazy because our house is pretty small.  We set up the bar under a tent in our front yard, right outside the front door, and rented a couple patio heaters so our guests could hang out outside.  Thankfully, it didn't rain (pretty miraculous in Seattle!), and everyone had fun.

    I'm on my way back to MD after visiting family in N.C. And Florida. DH and I also spent two days in Savannah, GA being tourists and eating great food on the way to my mom's near Gainesville. Then spent a couple of days in Jacksonville Beach at my brother's. My sis and her DH were there as well. We had a great time attending the Jets/Jaguars game and learning to play beer pong at a tailgating party. Now, back to reality. I have a ct scan tomorrow and start taxol on Wednesday. Loved my chemo break and checking some things off my bucket list!! Oh, Tina, what a crappy thing to happen to you while you were on vacation (pun intended). Sounds like you made the best of things and enjoyed your vacation anyway. Nancy, you are brave to have such a large party. Glad it went so well!! Susan, I ate lots of lamb in Ireland after thinking most of my life that I didn't like lamb. I do like lamb and am sorry I've avoided it for so long!! I've missed you all but I can't say it's good to be back! LOL!

    Thank you all for your sympathetic reactions to my recent experience with altitude sickness and perhaps food poisioning in New Mexico. I am beginning to believe the whole episode was due to altitude alone. I plan to ask my doctor this week if my lung mets or treatment could possibly have exacerbated my body's reaction to the increase in elevation. I have or had some atelectasis in one lung, so maybe that was the culprit.

    Whatever the reason, I guess this means I have to cross the Himalayas off my list of prospective travel destinations.

    Oh well, they weren't that high on the list! ;-)
