Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. It's a great feeling to finally get your energy back after all that we have endured, isn't it?
GalSal, hope your consult goes really well. Looking forward to hearing your update.
MondaysChild, sorry you were traveling & missed Thanksgiving feast. I totally agree about the whole retail consumption aspect of what the holidays have turned into. Unfortunately, working for a little company, they believe that we are forced to open whenever the big retailers open or we will miss out on all the shoppers that do go out to try & snag some deals.
Omeggo, you sure have a full plate right now!
Looking forward to meeting you, Lorraine. Welcome to the group.
-
Well rats, Omeggo. You do have a packed schedule those days. Look forward to you making the next time.
SpecialK, are you able to join us?
-
I believe so - I will be in D.C. until the night of the 5th.
-
Great! Travel safely.
-
You too!
-
Hi everybody! All is well here today, Saturday. I hope those of you having to (or even wanting to) brave all that retail stuff yesterday have maintained your inspiration of humanity...I am a terrible 'consumer' i.e. I am not a shopper, at all, can't stand ads of any kind, etc. If it all weren't so 'capitalist' I'd say it was a government conspiracy...this is all tongue in cheek, of course.
But I actually have a question for you today. My DH is coming down with what might be a sinus infection or a cold. He is very seldomly sick but today he's running a low fever, has a whopping headache and body aches, but so far, is getting plenty of TLC from me. However, as good as I'm now feeling (day 12 of chemo #2) should I be doing anything extra, in terms of assuring I don't get his bug? Like, should I (or he) be sleeping on the couch or something?
My bloodwork was splendid on Wed. and I feel very good, even if a little tired from my exceedingly long day yesterday. I went to bed at midnight! Since starting chemo, I'm usually in bed by 8 or 8:30 and last night's concert started at 8! It was pretty amusing...and I'm glad I didn't have to play principal and it was 'only' pops but still. My concentration sucked. Oh well, right? Chemo brain, as minimally as I'm experiencing it, makes reading all those teeny, tiny black dots (music) on the page, more challenging. My brain is slower, to be sure.
Anyway, if anyone has any good tips above and beyond the obvious, please do post it. Thanks a lot!
I look forard to the NEXT get together...will that be in 2013???? Wow. That looks so like, futuristic, and it is only five weeks away.
-
omeggo - aside from a lot of handwashing and maybe wearing gloves if you are doing dishes or touching anything that hubs has had contact with, I am not sure how much you can do. My DD was sick a couple of times during the time I was in chemo and I had no problems. As long as you take precautions and your white count is good you will probably be OK. I am so impressed that you are carrying on with your music - maintaining your schedule as best you can during this helps preserve normalcy - even if it takes more effort. You go girl!
-
Thanks Kathy for your input. The 'normalcy' thing is a huge deal for me, even if I am keeping things undercover with my colleagues. I don't like doing that but it is very necessary under the circumstances. I do get a lot of compliments on my hair...a funny irony and yes, my wig(s) do look better than my real hair, even on the best days, pre BC. Physically and mentally everything DOES take more effort. I probably should have accounted for that fact and practiced more...I didn't and I wasn't exactly thrilled with my performance. Hopefully tonight I'll be a little more on the ball. For future upcoming gigs, I will account for that and compensate (practice) accordingly.
Have a great day and thanks again. DH is not feeling well at all but Ohio State just won so at least he's happy there.
-
Omeggo, so sorry that you have to keep things undercover from your colleagues. You sound like you are juggling things very well, though. Hope your husband is feeling better soon.
-
Hi DLL - I think I'm juggling pretty well and it's only with the timing of everything, that I need to stay undercover. I was hired for a teaching job the week after dx, so being open about all the drama (especially then, when I was freaking out + PTSD from my childhood experience with my moms' cancer) would have cost me the job, no doubt about it. As far as playing, in the freelance world, people come to conclusions with the best of intentions...which in all likelihood would have cost me precious connections, money, etc. I don't freelance that much to begin with.
Last night's concert went really, really well, not only for me but especially for the brass section. It is such a good orchestra and a pleasure to play with. It was really fun. Got another concert tonight and that'll be it for the series.
Have a nice afternoon everyone. Go Bucs!

Thanks for the welcome! We were across the state at Patrick AFB. The thought process was to keep me in Florida so I could continue my treatment at MD Anderson in Orlando. So, John was able to secure an assignment here, at MacDill.
Unfortunately, TriCare doesn't have a contract with MD Anderson.....I lost my major medical and needed to go on John's TriCare policy. Therefore, I'm going to Moffitt right now.
I'm really looking forward to our get together. This will be the first LIVE support group I've ever been to so I'm starving for other bc like minded people!! -
firework - I am a longtime mil spouse so we will have that in common as well. My husband retired in '09 but works in his same job at SOCOM at MacDill. There are several others who have military connections as well!
-
Great SpecialK, I look forward to meeting you. Husband is at CENTCOM, hopefully this will be a 3 year assignment. Great place to retire. See you soon!
-
firework - looking forward to meeting you!

Well, an infection has pushed back my chemo to next Tuesday (12/4) instead of tomorrow. Since I will be relying heavily on the anti-nausea drugs including ativan, I don't know that I will be able to drive on that Thursday night. Bummed right now as pushing chemo back makes it have to go into the new year, but just frustrated in general about the whole thing. Maybe I'll at least get some good news tomorrow from the PETscan today that will make the whole chemo thing seem worth it.
-
nbnotes, Sorry about the delay in your chemo. The frustration is understandable. Wishing you a good scan today and even better results tomorrow!
-
nbnotes - you are between me and the restaurant, so if you feel up to it and want to go I can certainly come and get you. All you have to do is say the word.
-
SpecialK - -Thank you so much!!! I would definitely be interested in catching a ride if I'm up to it. I'll keep you posted.
-
Evening all,
I'm heading to Moffitt in the am.
The right breast has decided to stay swollen, discolored and cause sharp pain with certain movement. It's been acting up since I had the tubes removed. I'm not a Dr but I play one ALL the TIME so I've concluded this must be a Sertoma. Easy drain for a nurse or resident.......we'll see.
I've been having issues with Moffitts "policy" crap ever since I got my tubes out but I'm not gonna wail about it on here.........cause I did that already in the group for 40-50-60 year olds!!!
Have a nice evening. For all of you having treatment this week, I'll be holding you in my heart, for those of you struggling through tough times, I'll hold you in my fist to give you strength and for those of you whom have traveled the roads WE are on....bless you for your guidance, experience and wisdom. Goodnight, Firework~Lorraine -
There's some fabulous Ladies in our group, nbnotes! Lorraine, hope things turn out better than you expect!
-
nbnotes, I am very sorry to hear about another delay in your chemo. Infections create frustrating roadblocks in a treatment path that is already tough enough. I hope you recover from it soon, and I hope you feel well enough next week to catch that ride with SpecialK.
Lorraine, it does sound like you may have a seroma. Hope that is all it is and that you navigate Moffitt easily.
-
Hi Everyone, Special K sent me a link to this group. It is my first time on this site. I just had a BMX with recon started 2 weeks ago. My head is still spinning
. Just found out yesterday that I have an invasive ER+ component that did not show up in the lumpectomy 4 weeks ago. ?! So I have LCIS, DCIS HER2/NEU +++ which was ER/PR - and invasive ER+ . How messed up is that?!
Was on this site looking for some support from others who have been through some of this. Would very much like to attend one of your Get Togethers, but not sure I can make the one on the 6th!
Hugs to all,
Pam
-
Welcome zappons! Sorry you are in the situation where you have to join this group that no one wants to be in, but know that it is so helpful to be able to talk to others that are/have gone through the same type of thing. There are great ladies here!
-
Checking in to see how y'all are doing. Hi zappons--looking forward to meeting you soon.
-
Have a cold/flu, probably caught from family last week. No, no, no! Must get rid of it well before NOLA surgery trip in 2+ weeks!
zappons -- I won't be able to make it on the 6th either, but hope to meet you at the next one as long as it's not in December.
Firework~Lorraine -- how did it go at Moffitt?
-
AnnAlive: I have that bug. I am fairly miserable right now, had a fever of 100 - 101 for the last two days, coughing like there's no tomorrow, am on antibiotics but have found that the Tylenol with codiene has helped my cough significantly. I took it (left over from surgery in Aug.) because my jaw is so stiff and sore. (From the Taxotere or something? Not sure there).
My DH had the bug and he's now doing much better. My guess is that its course is around five days. How long have you had it? Mine started on Tuesday, in earnest. Good luck to you! You will probably be ready for your trip. Wear a mask on the plane (the kind you get at the pharmacy - I think they are called 'N-5') to make sure you don't get all of those heinous bugs among airplane passengers. I now wish I'd worn one at home when my DH came down with the bug! 20 -20 hindsight. Didn't even occur to me.
I will miss next week's gathering and really do wish I could make it. It'd be a nice way to start the Christmas/Chanukah holiday time.
-
I think I got the bug in Arizona last week -- some relatives had it or were getting it, and I could have worn a mask on the plane, but forgot to take any and was already exposed so didn't buy any. I was feeling fine. It just hit last night, 5 days after I got home, so it's unclear how/when I actually got it. DH had a very mild case and only lost his voice. Trip to NOLA is by car, so I won't have the plane worry, but contagious people are everywhere even before they exhibit symptoms! Stuff is going around at church too, so hard to escape it, but not fun as surgery approaches. I probably spread it at orchestra rehearsal last night without knowing I was sick. Stay well, everyone! I guess shopping online is the best idea.
-
Hey AnnAlive, what do you play? What orchestra? Hope you are feeling better.
-
Hope you both feel better soon, AnnAlive & Omeggo.
-
Thanks DLL. It is really a slow recovery...but my fever finally broke last night.
