3jays, it's so good to see you! I'm so sorry about both the sinus problems and the skin cancers.  Hope they both can be taken care of sooner than later, and you can get back to packing.  I'm like Barbe, wish you could wiggle your nose and everything would be done, but at least the move is approved now.  Hugs and prayers for you, all the time.

Ginger I sure hope you're okay, but I got hysterical at the visual of that, sorry!!!

I think a lot of people on this thread are also on others with a lot of the same people so don't come to this one that much. I only do two others, I can't keep up with more than that. The others are Life's a Beach and Middle Aged Women ... both are a lot of fun and any of you who aren't already on those ... check them out, they're both open to just about anybody!

I'm here too, but mostly can't think of much interesting to say.  And all I would have written all summer was "harvested xx pounds tomatoes/squash/etc. Preserved xx qts/pts/ of xxx"

But I liked your shrimp story Ginger - it was a good visual. There could be some medical benefit. Dress up the story and add 'shrimp up the nose' to the 'cure for stupid' thread.Laughing a joke.

Marle, I was worried for you and all our east coast sisters - what  horror Hurricane Sandy wrought. and such long-term ramifications.

3jays I am glad you are almost  to your newplace; and I sure hope your newest medical issues are resolved quickly and easily and benignly.

Connie, so sorry about your MIL.  We took care of my mother, and it had reached the place where we had to tell her she just had to go to assisted living, and she died at home the next morning, just before I got there for my usual morning check-in.

and QCA - so sorry about your BIL. I hd been hoping for better news. (DH is also a Viet Nam vet - there's a whole discussion among our age group).  I'll think of you next week when we have a layover in Charlotte.  Not long enough to actually do anything, but I seem to remember you are fairly close to Charlotte so I'll say hi in passing.

Then it's 8 days in the Bahamas - a whole new experience Cool.  DH saw a little of the Caribbean when he was in the Navy, but I've never been (and have been obsessively online trying to learn).  He is so looking forward to this tallship cruise - a week sailing the islands - different anchorage each night. I think it could be really fun.

But I'm fighting some stupid rash that probably won't like the tropics and am having a bit of a pity party, but I think I'm winning the fight - it's just Frown or even Yell.  Only a few days left to heal.

I've packed and repacked - it's sort of a "barefoot" cruise,  you bring  foul weather gear and warm things as well as shorts and t-shirts and coverups and deck shoes.  There will be 8 crew for the up-to-24 passengers.  3 shared main heads/bathrooms & showers for the 12 cabins. Not your usual cup of cruise tea, eh?  DH is generally a quiet man - but the underlying smile and twinkle he is beginning to exhibit is fun to watch.  On this cruise you can help if you want, or not.

I figure to take a lot of pix of DH-the-avid-and-competent-sailor helping and I sort of expect to get shots of him climbing rigging, manning the helm, and doing just about everything. I need to get more technical because our camera takes movies and I don't know how to do that. This trip is something he has wanted to do just about forever, and I once gave him an afternoon on the Tallship California as a birthday gift.

Last spring I found a website listing most of the tall ships in the world, and the cruises/sails/opportunities within the group of a couple hundred ships. It was a whole new world.

After  2nd bc ('96 & '10) and tx, and regaining health, I really wanted an adventure while I could do it and this is going to be one - even though now I'm totally freaked out about shared heads, constant humidity, malaria, dengue fever, "I'm not in charge of anything here," and what have you....just the jitters...

Hoping to learn to get some of the pix posted here -you don't know how that lack of ability frustrates me.

Anybody I missed - hugs.  I was so glad to hear that AJ went to FL and our fearless leader had gotten new job- huge huge best wishes!

To all, I care, I just don't say it much. And as Marle mentioned, I can only keep up with a couple of threads, although I read some others from time to time.

edit to add: I forgot to mention we have 2+ days at the Atlantis resort at Nassau, and are really looking forward to their marine exhibits.

Lost creek, Have a great time. Many years ago we did a Windjammer cruise to the Leeward Islands in the carribean. Much like you describe, we hoisted the sails on the Polynesia an old two masted schooner. Rum punch, lots of stars, warm breezes and an itinerary that changed if the captain didn't like how his passengers had been treated the last time he hit a particular island. Bring lots of sunscreen( use it)take lots of pictures butdon't forget to set the camera aside and just enjoy.

Wow, Lostcreek, your trip sounds so exciting!  DH went on one of those tallship cruises before we knew each other and had a great time.  Hope you and your DH do too!  And isn't is fun to see our DH's get so excited about something?  Anyhow, hey to you on your brief stop in Charlotte.  I'm just about 25 miles east of there.

We started Thanksgiving preparations today--not cooking yet, but cleaning, my least favorite thing.  I keep telling DH we need a housecleaning service to come in about every two weeks and do the heavy stuff.  Even more convinced after today, so we shall see.  DGS will be here tomorrow so little will get done then.

We're having DD, SIL, DS, DIL, DGS, and heaven help me, DIL's mother.  DIL and her mother are usually like oil and water, so it should be interesting.  I've become quite expert at biting my tongue and yielding not to temptation, though, telling myself it would take a saint to get along with that woman.  But I do my best, since we share a delightful DGS.  Thinking seriously about downing a quick glass of wine prior to her arrival.

Lost Creek, don't worry about shared heads!! You probably pee more in the ocean snorkelling and if you're like me, you won't have a bowel movement in close quarters for the whole 10 days!! I'd have to go to a hotel bathroom or something. (We used to have a 40' yacht and hammered into the kids to save their #2's for shore!!) You won't have constant humidity as you'll be on the water with a breeze and it's a warm breeze so it's not offensive. As for malaria and dengue fever, you were just kidding, right???? I'd be more worried about nausea as I'm not the one steering the ship!! As a driver I never got sick at sea. Take Gravol. Sounds absolutely FABULOUS!!!!

That's funny, Eph.  Sounds like very good advice, too.

Would you believe DH and I have never been on a cruise?  Most of our friends have, and everynow  and then DH mentions it but we don't ever follow through.  Now, he's talking about wanting to go to Florida, but I've learned to believe it when I see it!  He has surprised me with 2 trips to NYC, both to spend some time and also see Peter, Paul and Mary at Carnegie Hall.  I loved New York!  Wouldn't want to live there, but I did love it just the same.

The cooking begins tomorrow.  DD's going to bring some wine, so I'm covered!

Love cruising. One of our favorites was cruising on the rivers in europe. Theses are small ships so they dock each day in a different port and cruise at night. Great way to see things. Also really liked a repositioning cruise we took that started in Vancouver B.C and went down the west coast and through the Panama Canal to Florida.Think the next one will be to Ireland. Hope everyone has a great Turkey Day.

    Hi All,

The shrimp gave me no further trouble and I agree it was pretty funny.

Lost Creek, I worked in Haiti in the Carribean. Tke you daily meds for malaria and you should be just fine. Most start two weeks before arrival in a malarial area. Luckily the Carribean does not have the strains in africa so the meds aren't so difficult. I had no reaction at all ever to them. My friend didn't take them because he knew he was going to be long term in the tropics. Big, big mistake. He has had Malaria 6 times in 9 years now. It makes you really sick and treatment is a must.  Just take your meds and you will be fine.

Denge is from daytime biting mosquitoes. Use your insect repellant every day more than once. It should have a deet foundation. Spray your clothes with permethrin, it will bind to the fibers and mosquites will drop dead if they land on you. It is exactly what the military uses and works perfectly. Get these two things at a sporting goods store such as REI.  Dengue will not kill you, but will make you feel like you wish you could die. If it is the first time you have it, it will not be as bad as later cases. It will be bad, like the worst flu ever in your life.

Now get over being scared and use the proper preventives and you will almost assuredly have nothing at all to worry about. Ignore people who say you don't have to take or do the prevention. Just do your stuff and have a worry free time. I also used powders, medicated ones such as those used for athletes foot, look at the ingredients. They treat fungal issues. Sweating in the tropics it really helps to sprinkle a bit of special powders whereever you have folds. On the ship if you are under sail it probably won't be a problem.

You are going to have the most amazing time. I have friends who have done this trip and they loved it totally.

The water is this amazing aqua blue in some places.  If you snorkle the fishes are like seeing giant aquarium fish. They were just amazing to me. Most of the reefs in Haiti are dying so where you go you should see things that are really spectacular. My friend grew up in Haiti 40+ years ago and said as a kid she saw sea horses where she and her sister snorkled. She said they even had the variety that is all long and plumy, like fantasia.

You are just going to love your trip.  Sun hat is also really important, the sun can be so bright. Also 2 pairs of sun glasses for when you lose one.

I am so excited for you, I can't imagine I will go back to Haiti again. We make bio-sand water filters at Clean Water For Haiti and we work if we are there and I don't know what I could do these days.  It will remain in my heart forever though.

    Love Ginger

Hey ladies, thanks for the encouragement!!!!  I am sure we will have a great time, and that's the image I am envisioning.

This rash-thingy just threw me for a loop!  Sort of like the lipoma showing up on the day I got my 2-yr all clear mammo, but after I'd seen the doc.... out of nowhere stuff that keeps me on my toes, appreciating what a good life I actually have... The rash is improving, doc says it is a mystery but should be fine.  He gave me some anti-b to have just in case.

The water: Fortunately I kept my prescription snorkle mask from 20 yrs ago (that's 8 moves in the first 10 yrs -ago) and it still fits & sees fine.  Without glasses, my world gets fuzzy real quick.

Ginger, I so admire your volunteer work.  And thanks for the good tips.  I did get some stuff from REI but didn't know about permethrin.

Maybe they'll have it in Chico at an outdoors shop - we are going to take SIL on a "tourism" day through Chico as part of the thank-you for coming down (650+miles) to care for house/dog/bird.  Chico has a wonderful glass-blowing outfit (Orient & Flume) - fascinating - plus the Sierra Nevada Brewery is a good tour and has good lunches.

ptdreamers - I have just learned about these repositioning cruises and they sound right up our alley.  DH is considering the spring trip when they move this ship, the Liberty Clipper, back to the US.  He LIKES sailing upwind. (perverted if you ask me, I mostly like sailing downwind).  River barge trips in Europe have also been on DHs wish list as long as I've known him.

SoCal Lisa took an amazing river trip a year or two ago - and posted the most wonderful pix here on BCO, I still think of them as Lisa's Euro-Art.

Chabba & Lisa, the Alaska cruise is definitely on my list!.  Do you know what's the best time of year to go?

I found one great looking trip through the Cook Islands, on a supply boat - recently built for supply & passengers. I think it's about 2 weeks & looks like a really fun adventure.

And now, since DH has retired, we can actually think of some of these things as possibilities.  We're in reasonably good health.  BTW, we will celebrate 36 yrs married next week.

Also, if anyone likes sailing much, there are some tremendous youtube America's Cup videos.  I was originally ticked off at the change in boats - but old Larry Ellison hit it on the head with these boats in SF bay because it is really good theater.  Holy cow those boats fly.

Have been watching Bahamas weather on line - looks like we'll have some good sailing wind at least part of the time.

Thanks again for the encouragement and tips, everyone. I really appreciate.

Oh, AJ if  you're reading this, thank you for your encouragement about the historical marker for my ancestress. I was pretty discouraged by the committee's rejection this spring (I don't speak southern, and I don't do rejection well), so I passed it along to my 92 year old KY cousin & another from GA.  They went to the marker committee & bingo.  Now all the committee needs is the factual documentation, which of course is my part, I have facts out the wazoo and immediately sent what they needed. Looks like the marker is gonna happen next spring. another "success" and something that has been important to me personally - to give this woman the recognition she deserves. She was the sister of a famous frontiersman, but no one had ever really studied her or written about her.

Thanksgiving: For the first time in a long time, I'm not cooking anything, we're not going anywhere.  I bought two turkey TV dinners and a frozen pumpkin pie and have some other stuff.  We had Thanksgiving with DHs family last weekend, & will have holiday meal with my DBs family after we get back.  It feels kind of wierd (but quite free) not to be cooking/planning/etc... And yet, we got married at Thanksgiving time and have often traveled alone... but it's just been awhile.  I suppose I'll repack my duffel again today.  I always take too much.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving, with lots lof love and laughter, and joy.

Leah, you and yours have a special place in my ongoing prayers.

Barbe, I know what you mean about being at the helm.  DH says it has a lot to do with keeping your eye on the horizon.  When we had our 30' sailboat, the only time I got sick was when I re-filled the alcohol stove while underway during a rough patch.  That whiff sent me flat with a bucket.  We would try to keep our passengers up on deck as you are less likely to get seasick on deck as below, especially on a small boat.  I dont know about the motion of a bigger boat -- 125' - it will move side to side more.

As to the head - well, after bc, I don't have a lot of modesty left.  I never made it to dignity, so won't miss that.Wink

Lost, I didn't realize you were going to Haiti!! Sorry, I missed that in your post. So do ignore me and the bad advice I gave!!!

Our 40' yacht was power and one day we were on the lake in dense fog. We went quite a way, a couple of hours north and my son said he was "tired" and going down stairs to lie down. Then the littlest child started to throw up. All this time we didn't realize the fog was holing in our fumes!!! My DH and other son at the helm were fine, but the 2 girls got sick. We never even thought of my son down in his cabin "asleep"!!!! A CLASSIC case of death if we ever missed one....I still get chills when I think of that day. He might have gone to sleep and never woken up....

Lisa, I didn't remember that your Europe trip was on a boat. I forgot that. Now I want to go because I see the ads on TV!! The best way to travel, that's for sure! But my disabilities are worse on the slanted floors and heavy doors of the larger ships. Had to use a cane the whole time 9 years ago! Even my DH had to buy a cane in port!!

Barbe - It's the Bahamas, but in the same general neighborhood as Haiti, so with the same tropical issues like malaria... so you didn't give bad advice.  It will be a hands-on experience and I expect DH to get his hands on as much of that ship as they will let him.

Our Thanksgiving is over now, and the house seems so very quiet. DS's MIL was exceptionally well-behaved today, so no problems there, although she says she's retiring next year and plans to move here.  (Currently lives about 200 miles away.)  I shuddered a bit at that and think I downed the last of my wine.

I've spent some time today reflecting of how much I have to be thankful for, and among those blessings are all of you on these forums.  Most of us have never met in person and may never meet, but we all genuinely care about each other and it shows through.  We rant together, worry, rejoice, counsel, commiserate, cry, and grieve together (as we so painfully did this year), and there's a love and acceptance here that is true and rare.  I'm thankful for all of you, my friends.

Okay--off the soapbox.  It's about time for a turkey sandwich.

I have been off the boards again for a few days...shut out by some unknown....

But...back on again after fantastic help from techies. I could read SOME of the topics, but not join in. This drove me to FB, which I don't go to regularly, to try and keep up.

We are absolutely deluged here rain, rain, rain.  It is really getting everyone down. My house is sat, once again, in the middle of a shallow 'river' which is running thru' my farmyard. Looking outside the back door the whole of the yard, has 2" of water 'twinkling' by...very odd.The poor cats cannot understand why they can't get to the door for their food. The winds are supposed to be getting up tonight, again, to between 60 and 70 MPH. I am sitting here listening to rain lashing down on the conservatory roof. It's ever present, whichever room I am in there is rain lashing at the windows.

I have mice in the house again , just to add to the excitement !.I picked up one of my wellies earlier this week, and shook out a dead mouse, thank goodness I didn't put my bare foot on top of it ! Two nights ago I was sitting at my pc, when a mouse strolled along the kitchen, and disappeared under a dog bed. I don't like to kill anything, but I don't like mice wandering around the house either! The walls are so old and thick that they can get anywhere up and down inside the walls, which means they'll end up popping out in my bedroom before much longer unless I get some poison down.

Winter is well and truly here now. 3 weeks and it will be the shortest day, then we are going towards Spring. We are dark now about 3.30pm. I don't like to be out and about in the half light. I have been on the school run this last few days, bringing my Gdaughter home from nursery school at teatime...she prattles on and on about her day as soon as she gets into the car..I am peering into the gloom... pleased I don't have a long drive with her in at that time of day.

I have run out of time here tonight, just had the police at the door, checking I haven't been swept away, and scaring me to death in the process wondering who is ringing my doorbell at 12.30 in the morning !! They were very lucky my rottweilers didn't come rushing out and take a chunk out of their behinds, too wet even for guard dogs !
