    I hope no one here loses electricity. My entire immediate family is in Potomac, MD at the moment - we are all assuming they will be without power for ages. B&G is terrible.

    It's one thing to lose electricity in the summer, but this time of year, e-gads.  We had a very weird storm in January of 2010...it converged on my small mountain town (i.e. temps down to 20's at night) and everyone lost power.  The shortest duration was 2 days, but some lost it past a weeks time.  I got rid of my wood stove years before and didn't own a generator.  It was the most miserable 2 days of my life as I had to keep shoveling snow and could never dry out my clothes afterwards.  It was in the low 40's inside of my house.  First sign of sun I spent $2000 on a generator....the minute we plugged it in, my power came on.  Still, it is nice to have that security, though getting gas for the generator is a whole nother issue.

    How miserable to deal with this type of storm while possibly getting snow.  It can also be life threatning.

    My mother insisted on staying alone, in her apartment. Her riverfront apartment is not far from the Bay so I'm sure she'll see flooding and electrical issues. I wish she'd come to stay with us.



    Our electric rarely falters but we'll still have gas for cooking. And bags of halloween candy.

    Hi everyone.  Just checking back in.  You all have been way too busy for me to catch up quickly.  I've been batten down the hatches for the storm since I got in from California late Friday night and haven't been on my computer until tonight.  Still a little on CA time, and finally have a minute to say hi - and thought I should do it now in case the storm knocks out my Internet. 

    I see Enjoyful's been on line.  Enjoyful, I hope you're recovering well from the surgery.  I bought candy corn today while running for prescriptions and batteries etc.  What's the point of having a storm if you don't have candy?

    According to the latest maps, we're right in the path of Sandy - although at least we're inland. My biggest worry with the storm isn't about me - although there is this enormous pine tree right next to my family room.  If the power goes out for a long period, I'm worried about my mother-in-law who needs oxygen to breath - and lives four blocks away, and my father with Alzheimer's who wouldn't understand what's going on and will get very upset. 

    Feels like I'm on the edge of a battle.

    Anyway, good thoughts to everyone.  Hope everyone in the path of the storm comes through safely.  Stay dry all.

    Well, I'm in the Niagara region and it's been raining here (and windy) for the last two days.  Looks like we're going to be severely affected by Sandy (with apologies to our pal Sandy!).  I have lots of toilet paper and a freezer full of food, but I'm wondering what else we should do.  We're close to the source of much electrical power, and our Cdn guys here are excellent at fixing power problems, but it's still a question mark.  We have a fireplace and we've brought in wood from the pile in a corner of our yard. And a (connected) gas B-B-Q.   BUT -- we don't have any marshmallows!  Oh no!

    I'm thinking about all of you in the wake of Sandy's initial wrath and hoping you'll stay safe, dry and comfortable.  E.'s mom is strong and confident and I'm sure she's weathered many a storm -- hoping that's enough to see her safely through this one.

    We lived through Hurricane Hazel in 1954 (the eye of the storm passed within 2 miles of us and gave me a life-long fear of flooding and wind damage).  Sure hoping Sandy is a pale imitation of that nightmare.

    Another Dark and Stormy might be in order!  Good luck, everyone.

    Have insomnia, so thought I'd check in.  Stay safe everyone. 

    Lewing - your dinner sounded deeeelicious.  I made two sausage, onion and mushroom quiche today so hubby will have breakfast and/or lunch food for the week.  He webered a King salmon filet that he caught this summer. 

    We both got our shingles and flu vaccinations on Thursday - well, he got both his on thursday, I got the flu one on Thursday and the shingles one on Friday, as they couldn't put them both in the same arm on the same day - and I only get shots or bp on the right side anymore.  Anyway, I felt fairly rotten most of the weekend, and now I cannot sleep - which sucks, as I have to get up in 3 hours.

    Actually, I think I'll go try again.

    Momine, you are on!  How long ago did you live in Brooklyn?  Fort Greene is one of those neighborhoods that's changed a LOT in the last 10 (and certainly in the last 20) years.  On Saturdays, when the Brooklyn Flea is happening (by Bishop Loughlin HS), it's almost like a parody of the new Brooklyn. 

    But the borough is fantastic for food.  Not just all the new, artisanal producers ($7 chocolate bars, etc.) but also street food and home cooking from all over the world.  Right now I'm on a West Indian food binge. 

    Well, actually, RIGHT right now I'm sitting at the computer listening to the wind outside and starting to feel a little claustrophobic.  I'd normally be out running at this hour, but in a rare show of sanity, I'm staying inside.  Better to be safe and dry and claustrophobic than the alternative.  (Though it's not raining here . . . yet.)

    We have tropical cyclones - same as your hurricanes but they go in the opposite direction.

    Morning gals.... And good to be with all of you...Jackie, YramAl, and SuzieQ...Wink And to all of you who are trying so hard to keep our President in office!  

    Yes!  I voted for him last time, and I voted for him again!  So I'm just one of those weird women who "just don't get it" I guess.........

    With Obama, neither DH or I have to pay for health care.... We are both 75, he with his Pacemaker, me 3 years out from cancer, and we have our health care through United Health Care, AARP/MedicareComplete.... Plan 2.  No, again, we don't pay any monthly premiums.  And it is $15 for office calls, $30 for a Specialist, and $65 if we go to Emergency. 

    Maybe everyone wouldn't qualify, and maybe it is in this area, but I thank God, and Obama for helping us Seniors with THIS expense!  And I don't want to LOSE it! 

    I've been reading the boards, and all the controversy's over Obama and Romney.... And I'll be so glad when this election is over.... I know how tight the race is, and how MY vote probably won't make a difference... but I just hope the best man wins, and he's in office right now!

    A few other things.... I am also happy that we are almost out of that war that was full-steam ahead when Obama took office..... and that any tax increases have not affected us.....And  that SS has stayed the same.

    Sure, things could be better for a lot of people, but through my eyes, and not listening to all the bad-mouthing, I hope it stays the same!  I am afraid of change... and right now we know what we have.

    Just my 2-cents............ And stay safe you gals on the East Coast....hang on to your britches....!

    Welcome, Chevyboy!  I will certainly do as you say and hang onto my britches.

    As for your comment about your vote probably not making a difference . . . Colorado is pretty darn key this year.  Keep talking up the President's record and telling your story and getting your neighbors to the polls.  It really does make a difference.  (Can't you tell, I'm kind of wishing I lived in a swing state????)

    Lewing, thanks! I lived there (and many other places in Brooklyn) about 20+ years ago. When I lived in Fort Greene it was predominantly black with a few scared, white hippie/yuppie types who had invested there years earlier, convinced the place would gentrify soon. As you say, it eventually did, but it hadn't really when  I lived there. The food was great, the commute to lower Manhattan was great, having a garden was great. I loved it.  I even loved the old dudes on the corner who would perk up when I came by on my bike (which had a long, black saddle) and all holler, "ride that thaing, slim, ride it baby!"

    Then I met DH, and he had Brooklyn trauma from his childhood immigrant days, so we moved to the dreadful burbs for a while.

    Thanks Linda & momine...Your names are so familiar, along with Blue, because I have been reading this thread for ages!  I consider myself an Independent .... because I only vote for who I think is the best man for the office...and not by party.

    My "older" friends are die-hard Republicans, and it drives me nuts when they send ME all the bashings from their party!  It seems the younger voters from last time, voted for Obama... And the older ones did NOT want someone so "different" in office.... and no, they haven't had any sense knocked into them yet...Ha!  I KNOW this one is a close one.... Pres. Obama has been around here a lot of times lately, even in our neighborhood....  and THAT is special!

    I remember years ago, when President Clinton and the Pope were vising Denver together.... And their helicopters flew right over our house from the stadium...It was like in slow-motion, because they landed about 8 blocks from our house....Laughing  It just gave you chills!

    A friend posted Romney's remarks during the Repug primary that emergency relief was immoral.  What a guy!  Jesus would be so proud.

    Wonder if people are connecting the storm to global warming.  We've just had so many of these "once every 100 years" events over the past two years. 

    Chevyboy, yah for an Obama vote in CO!  Welcome!

    Going to run get my shower before the power and water goes out.  Winds starting to pick up. I've heard predictions that the entire state of NJ will go dark, at least for some period of time.  I have 8 hours of battery life on the computer, but will probaby lose the Internet.

    This seems like another Christian thought that no longer applies these days.  My mother use to put me to bed with bible stories.  The Rich Man and Lazarus was one of her favorites.

    I'm not a Christian, but I adored my mother and the principles of these particular Biblical stories / verses stuck with me.  I honestly believe wealth earned should ALL be given away before one dies.  Building elevators for cars, foreign bank accounts, ridiculous homes, too many homes...this is not Christian to me, nor an honorable way to live one's life.

    It's all my fault actually - I gave Munchkin a bath on Wednesday and it started raining here on Thursday and hasn't stopped!!!!!  Today the wind has picked up, the temperature has dropped and it is STILL raining and that's why it's called Hurricane SANDY!Embarassed

    Wow - just got back from an exploratory walk (along with a few other hardy-crazy souls).  A few businesses in the neighborhood are open, but most are closed.  It's raining a little -- somewhere between a drizzle and a shower -- and the winds are blowing but aren't really fierce yet.  So it was sobering to go down to the Gowanus Canal (for those of you who don't know Brooklyn, the Gowanus is a fetid Superfund site) and see that it's already up to the top of its channel, just from the beginning of the storm surge.  This is going to be really, really bad.

    (We're two long uphill blocks from the canal so should be OK, but I really feel for the people who are closer.  Gowanus water is not something you ever want to come in contact with.)

    Blue....love that cartoon.  I think often the subject of God, religion, etc. would not be coming up save for the current God fearing candidate --- hard right, middle right, conservative something or other, who would in his behavior make you think he fears nothing.  Certainly not God since he is so all over the place with his set of wills and won'ts and shouldn't's and we can't.  I have to hand it to him lthough......I think he knows exactly how to take away....and he will not be playing favorites then either.  But I digress.  I think even this a.m. I am still hearing......the Electoral College will be the President's and perhaps Romney will have to be satisfied with the popular vote. 

    On a high note....hello Chevy.  What took you so long.  Just teasin' you my good friend.  Bet your loving that cartoon as well.  Well you know.......Romney has little idea of how many smart people there really are in this world.......and I just don't think he can fool enough people.

    Hi, chevyboy - GOTV in CO.  Nice to "meet" you on this thread, hope you're voting.  CO is becoming more & more important these days.

    Lewing - YUM, I'm drooling at the thought of smelling the pork slow cooking....and happy you liked Tom's editorial.  It is always his RESPECT for complexity for me too.  Sometimes I get a little bored with this "analogies" to explain things, but he's always trying to communicate, not just blast or "shut down" the other point of view.  I remember when GWB proudly said "he didn't do nuance."  So said, the last of interellectual curiosity.

    Kind of goes along with the refusal to TEACH tolerance, openness in schools: this "our way or the highway" stifles real learning.

    Kam: that is the singularly funniest nickname I've ever read.  Spewing hot tea over the keyboard funny.  About to make its way into emails today fabulous..

    Blue - great picture.  Hoping you are gradually having less pain, think of you when I have my acupuncture sessions.

    Ok, gotta mention it, the weather.  I have to walk about 300 feet sort of down hill to get to the newspaper "sleeve" on the road, and honest, the wind at 8am today was ferocious - still building - and we're talking western MA - thank goodness the leaves are all down, but the sounds - this is a very small cabin kinda on a little hill - fields on south side, lotsa acres of woods aftere that - and the winds really does HOWL, don't know how else to describe the sound, siding over brick on one side, and you can HEAR it when it gets between the two - honestly whistles.

    Stay safe everyone - right now I guess Glenna, Alexandria, Enjoyful, Lewing are in the most dangerous line of fire -  STORM SURGES - yikes. Stay warm & DRY.
