Frankly, I think Biden crushed Ryan.  The Romney Ryan ticket has been doing this magic act, pulling rabbits out of a hat, trying to keep people from seeing what they will actually do.  It was exposed last night.  WE would lose legal abortion.  The rich, especially the rich who benefit from the capital gains, would win big tax breaks.  Services would be cut for everyone else. Either the deficit or taxes on the middle class will rise.

One thing I wish Biden had said, not only does the math not add up on the tax plan, it doesn't work.  Cutting taxes does not stimulate the economy and it does not lift the middle class.  Never has. Didn't work under Reagan.  Didn't work under W.

Do we have the best coverage on this thread, or WHAT? Belinda, I love your graphics. I think Biden thoroughly enjoyed himself las night. Ryan seemed nervous.

    From my in-box this morning:

    Epic
Biden Quote: ‘If They Would Get Out Of The Way' (VIDEO)

    by Justin Acuff

    (ERIC
THAYER/REUTERS - through the Washington Post)

    One
of Biden's awesomely quotable talking points during the Vice Presidential debate
dealt with congressional obstructionism and the Republican "our way or the
highway" attitude as of late. The video speaks for itself, and here it is (the
quote in question is about six minutes in) courtesy of Raw
    Story
    through CNN:

    Here's
the transcript of the section in question:

    //
    //

    "I've
never met two guys more down on America across the board. We're told everything
is going badly. 5.2 million new jobs, private sector jobs. We need more. But 5.2
million. If they'd get out of the way and let us pass the tax cut for the middle
class and make it permanent. If they'd get out of the way and pass the jobs
bill. If they'd get out of the way and let us allow 14 million people who are
struggling to stay in their homes because their mortgages are upside down but
they never missed a mortgage payment.

    Just
get out of the way. Stop talking about how you care about people. Show me
something. Show me a policy. Show me a policy where you take responsibility. And
by the way, they talk about this great recession as if it fell out of the sky,
like 'Oh my goodness! Where did this come from?' It came from this man voting to
put two wars on a credit card."

    Biden
absolutely nailed it. Everything that is proposed by the left is shot down by
the right. Sort of ruins Ryan's credibility on the projected "Obama won't work
with us" point -- then again, they invalidated that as a whole (Republicans) by
refusing to work on any idea with him, including on things like Obamacare that
came from a conservative idea in the first place. It's amazing, isn't it?

One thing I've been wondering about: since Ryan's story about Romney's kindness to the family that had experienced that devastating auto crash was so obviously rehearsed, and just thrown out there with no relevance to the question at hand . . . do you think that was just an appalling gaffe, or a deliberate attempt to rattle Biden?  I don't know, of course, but given the level of prep and strategy that goes into these things, I'm starting to think it was the latter.

I do know that I could never have been as calm and gracious as the vice president was in his response.

IMHO an attempt to rattle Biden.

Has anyone else noticed that Ryan's use of the word duress, was not only a dig meant to bring up Obama's performance, but was wrong. Wrong in terms of word usage. I mean, he obviously doesn't know the definition.

From Merriam-Webster dictionary:  duress has two definitions.

    1  forcible restraint or restriction

2 compulsion by threat; specifically : unlawful constraint

I think Ryan wanted to say that Biden was under pressure to perform, but wanted to sound more educated so used the word duress.  It's longer.  It's less common.  It sounds worse.  It's just not the correct word for the meaning.    Saying Biden was under duress means that Biden was being forced or threatened to perform as he did.

To me, it reinforces the image of Ryan as a kid trying to sound more grown-up by using big words.  Used to see it all the time when I taught sophomore English.

Lewing, I thought last night -- and even more so now -- that it was Ruin's way of burying his finger in Biden's eye up to the third knuckle. He was actively TRYING to hurt Biden -- and Biden rose above. I found Ruin smirky and smarmy and generally unbelievable. And both Martha Raddatz and Joe kept hammering him for specifics and didn't get any. ALL of Ruin's little "stories" were so obviously rehearsed (memorized) that he just had a whole stack of them ready to insert at a moment's notice -- often inappropriately. And his response to Martha Raddatz's last question about the soldier troubled by the negativity and insults of the campaign was so far off the mark ... Not even in the NEIGHBORHOOD of addressing the question. The question was about the negativity and insults, and Ruin just wades right in there throwing negativity and insults around. He didn't even hear the question -- he just used the empty space to regurgitate several paragraphs of talking points.

I think Joe was the clear winner ... And I LOVED Bill Maher's tweet! Funniest response ever!

I have no doubt it was a chicken livered, low life, scumbag way to hit Biden in a cruel and personal way.  These are not nice people.

Here is my Canadian take on the debate.

Biden sounded genuine.  Ryan sounded rehearsed.  Biden may have interrupted, but Ryan just kept rattling on and on about theoretical ideas that had no details.  Reminded me of university philosophy class.  I thought Biden could have controlled the laughing but given his eccentric personality, it was acceptable.

Number one best answer...was Biden's stand on abortion as a Catholic.

Re Terry Jones...I was one who though he should be allowed to speak.  He had been given the perimeters for 'hate speech' and would have been arrested if he stepped over the line.  However....when they found a sign saying "Koran Burning Here" I agreed that his ass should be sent back to where he came from.

Question....My dh and I thought Ryan's flag pin was sporting some jewels, maybe diamonds?  If so, that just speaks of arrogance.  I know that some republicans think it is a sign of patriotism that they generally have bigger pins on their candidates. But jewels?

And what was in the middle of the American Flag?  Looked like something red to us.

HAHAH PiP -- I was chatting online with friends (live-reacting to the debate) and didn't look much (if at all) at Ruin. Every time I looked, he had that silly smirk on his face that made him look like Howdy Doody, so I didn't much pay attention.

HL....I also got a huge kick out of the Maher tweet.  I considered for a short while yesterday not bothering to watch.  I felt that it would go well for us, but in the end I'm glad that I did watch.  Greatly renewed my feeling that lies just can't hold up and sometimes the one saying them clearly understands they are not cutting it and it is creating loss.

Alexandria....great point.  I got an odd feeling when the duress remark came....now I know why.  Seemed clumsy to me at the time.

I just did a search on the pin.  Nothing about the jewels.  However, the red dot was a star that the secret service wear on their pins.  Apparently Romney wore one like it too.  I supose that means they are 'extra' patriotic.  What is it they say about men who drive bigger cars?

When hubby and I were watching the debate last night, he turned to me and asked, "how do you feel?"  I said, "each side is going to say their guy won - but I think Biden is just great!"  Also, no headache last night!!!  During the first debate I had such a bad headache I thought I was gonna throw up.  Obama better hold up his end in the next one!!!

Another home run from Charles P. Pierce in "Esquire" -

"Joe Biden laughed at him? Of course, he did. The only other option was to hand him a participation ribbon and take him to Burger King for lunch.

You know what's the difference between Sarah Palin and Paul Ryan?

The federal government's fiscal year 2012 has come to a close, and CBO estimates that the federal budget deficit for the year was about $1.1 trillion, approximately $200 billion lower than the shortfall recorded in 2011.  The 2012 deficit was equal to 7.0 percent of gross domestic product, CBO estimates, down from 8.7 percent in 2011, 9.0 percent in 2010, and 10.1 percent in 2009, but greater than in any other year since 1947.  CBO's deficit estimate is based on data from the Daily Treasury Statements; the Treasury Department will report the actual deficit for fiscal year 2012 later this month.

Waiting for the chorus of conspiricy theorists to once again disparage non-partisan US Civil Servants for cooking the books.....listen, it will be coming, but in the meantime, Yeah for us...we are moving in the right direction and per Paul Krugman, right on schedule for the deepest recession, near depression, we've experienced since the 1930's.

I am incredibly tired of conspiracy theorists.  After 9/11 it was that Bush and Cheney plotted the attack - now it's that Obama wants to be a dictator.  Crazy people....  I think they don't have enough to do in real life.
