I have long been baffled by the persistence of Cold War think involving "evil" Russians. Dh and I lived it first hand in the early 90s and it doesn't seem to have faded much since.
However, I gotta say that from where I am sitting, whatever passes as American foreign policy at the moment is a really sad sack of ersatz goods. Letting your ambassador get shot by weapons he himself supplied to the "rebels" indicates either colossal incompetence or colossal ignorance or possibly both.
The US military has, in my humble opinion, become the knee-breakers on behalf of whatever special interests can persuade the government to deploy. The form that persuasion takes these days seems to be money. Bush took the concept to previously unknown heights, but the first step was taken by Clinton with the bombing of Serbia.

Our foreign policy has rarely made me proud, momine. We used to install dictators and assassinate heads of state in the name of "democracy and freedom." More recently we have tortured....in the name of democracy and freedom.
You know you are an empire when you can act by double standards and get away with it. Clinton, who bombed Serbia, never raised a finger to save Rwanda (to his credit, he regrets it to this day).
Obama's justice department has failed to prosecute the torturers of Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld schooling.

Feeling somewhat better than I have in many days. Crossing front paws that I may get some longer term relief when I visit Johns Hopkins on Fridays. Lionesses cannot survive without their womanhood, it seems.

OK, folks, so in bubble world, people who support abortion or dividing Israel are evil. Didn't Romney this week make statements about supporting a two-state solution to the problem of the Palestinians? And didn't he just say he had no plans for legislation limiting choice, even though his campaign then walked back what he said about choice. It's like he says something to appeal to moderates, and then the campaign winks at the conversatives as if saying, "you know he's just saying this because he has to get elected, for Pete's sake." How can you, even if you're a conservative, accept a candidate who will say anything to get elected, who will change his message so dramatically to suit whatever audience he's addressing?
Enough on the bubble.
I had my endoscopy yesterday. Good news. Some inflamed areas but the doctor doesn't think it's anything serious. This is a relief. Four years ago, right after my mother died, I was trying to take care of my Dad with Alzheimer's, my daughter had multiple hospitalizations for stomach issues, and my dog had cancer (sounds like a country western song) - and I'd had an endoscopy that showed irritation that the doctor thought a little problematic. The doctor had wanted me to check back in a few months, and it had gone completely in one side of my head and out the other. I think I just heard that the biopsies were fine and dismissed the whole thing. I take abnormalities more seriously these days. So I was just a little nervous this time around. Anyway, it's good.

Morning....Alexandria, my question is definitely same as yours. Why would you wish to elect anyone who won't tell you what they intend to do, or in fact, has more answers for what he is going to do, then Carter has little liver pills. In my youth, long ago now, but vaguely remembered, Carter's little liver pills was a "catch " phrase. But no one used the term "catch phrase" either....hmmm, I must be in a little denial about my age. Just doing numbers in a very minor way ---- just my HO, but it would seem that are plenty of POOR Republicans who will if they elect Romney be in the same deep hole they were in, possibly worse, during the great Bush years. My Republican family at the end ( some going without heat until payday because they had no money and having other emergencies requiring other family to step in ) would look down whenever any sort of political talk began.

Why is this not surprising?
On the stump in Iowa Tuesday, Mitt Romney got emotional when he revealed that he met former Navy SEAL Glen Doherty at a holiday party some years ago. Doherty is one of the four Americans who were killed during the September 11th attack on the American consulate in Benghazi. But Glen Doherty's good friend Elf Ellefsen said that Doherty recalled Romney as "robotic," and the meeting wentmuch differently from what Romney retold in Iowa. -

And I understand that his not doing well was newsworthy. After all, he’s done much better in the past with much less on the line. But I can't believe that I actually need to tell the media just how the cow ate the cabbage on this one.It's pretty simple really. The other guy lied.How can the media continue to make Obama's poor performance the top story rather than the fact that the other guy looked really, really great while he lied through his teeth?In the primary debates, Romney is on record as saying that he would lower taxes for the wealthiest Americans because that would lead to job growth. That’s not an assumption on my part. It's almost a direct quote. But in the debate last week, he said that he wouldn’t lower taxes on the wealthy. Now, one of the two is a lie. So shouldn't we be focusing on which one is the lie rather than on which candidate looked more excited to be there?Romney actually claims he will lower taxes for everyone. At the same time he will increase defense spending, not cut Medicare or Social Security, keep most of Obamacare (while simultaneously repealing it) and somehow in the end he will decrease the deficit. I don’t know what he’s smoking but I bet its illegal in the Mormon church.How in the world can we continue to claim that Romney won the debate? He couldn't have taken more opposing positions if he was playing a game of Twister.Left foot yellow. During the debate, Romney claimed that Obamacare “puts in place an unelected board that's going to tell people ultimately what kind of treatments they can have.” Another lie. But wow what energy in the delivery! The point goes to Romney on style alone. Never has talking out of both sides of one's mouth looked so good.Right hand red. Romney wants to repeal Dodd-Frank because the bill designates banks as “too big to fail” and therefore gives them “a blank check.” Yet another lie. But he looked very presidential while saying it so we’ll let it slide.Right foot blue. Romney also took Obama to task on the economy’s performance over the past four years. Romney said that we have “23 million people out of work...The proof of that is that 50 percent of college graduates this year can't find work.” In case you didn't notice that's a lie followed by another lie. But hey, the President was looking down at the time, so let’s hire a body language specialist and make that the lead story for the next seven days.Right hand green. Obamacare cutting billions from Medicare was one of Romney’s favorite attack lines. Romney looked straight at the camera and said that $716 billion was cut from Medicare because of the Affordable Care Act. Yes. It was another lie. At this point his pants were literally on fire. You just couldn't see it because of the podium. However, President Obama looks like he doesn’t want to be here so let’s focus on that and ignore the smoke coming from Romney's magic underwear.This country went to war twice because the media was so afraid of appearing liberal that they were too scared to report the truth. I really thought we had learned our lesson with Bush. Calling a liar a liar, even if that liar is a Republican, doesn’t mean you have a liberal bias. It means you are reporting the facts.Well if the media won’t do it, I will…This just in: It wasn’t clear at first, but we checked the facts and Romney was lying. He also failed his urine test and is being stripped of any debate medals. It appears now that Obama won the debate. Feel free to call me liberal. I can take it. I mean it. Really.

Belinda, I liked the Maureen piece you put up, but I just read Maureen's latest column today about Obama's debate performance. Enough already. He wasn't great, but he wasn't that bad. He at least was truthful. And I have two words to say to Maureen Dowd. Sweater Vest. She made merciless fun of Al Gore's sweater vest in 2000. Did it affect the election? Don't know. All I know is that we got W , the Irag War, and all the rest of the fun of W's administration because of a difference of a few hundred votes. Did a negative impression of Gore from columns like Maureen's persuade even a tiny fraction of Dems to vote for Nader? If some of the commentators hadn't harped so much on Gore's appearance and instead have focused on substance, might that have made enough of a difference? Don't know, but maybe. Do the Dems want to take that chance again?
Dems need to shut up about Obama's performance and move forward. Can we focus on Romney changing his tune every five minutes? On the tax breaks for the rich, the dismantling of Medicaid and Medicare, the reversal of the ACA, the turning back the clock on women, the complete disregard for science that is the true agenda the right wing of the Republican party?

Belinda - LOL on the "than Carter's got liver pills" bit. I haven't heard that in years, but I do remember it vividly from my childhood (my dad used to say it) and I'm not all THAT old.
Kam, thanks for sharing the Ellefsen story . . . doubt I would have seen it otherwise. The killings in Benghazi were horrific and it disgusts me that some are trying to use them to score political points. But beyond the political point-scoring, I also think there's a dangerous kind of naivete at work -- a refusal to believe that the world can be a dangerous place, a bullheaded insistence that there are easy answers for really complex issues. (I disagree with some of what Momine said - I do think it was right to support the Libyans who were working to overthrow Gaddafi - and consider Ambassador Stevens a hero for his role in that effort. But, for sure, it's complicated.)

Mitt's attempt to humanize Mitt with some inflated story of a deceased hero is beyond contempt. I'm sure it took 2 weeks for him to come up with the story because someone at that party had to remind him that Glen was even there and then had the campaign had to research some common theme they might have discussed (but in actuality, probably didn't), like skiing......from Glen's story to his friend, Mitt 2-face didn't even remember him as Mitt introduced himself 3 times to Glen.
Before those mirror people litigate the Benghazi event, they should take a hard serious look at 9/11 and President Bush's and Condi's role in letting that happen despite all of the warnings they received.

Yes, Maureen Dowd is the first to complain if a candidate is a hollow shell, but when he shows too much gravitas and not enough levitas she cries foul. In her latest comment she almost suggests that Obama doesn't deserve to win because he wasn't aggressive enough in a debate. Rather shallow, to say the least.
Romney is a paper candidate. He is unidimensional and flits and floats with the wind.

I am chosing to believe that Obama was just letting Romeny talk non stop so that he would actually have the chance to say all these things. Now Romney's words, heard by millions, will come back to haunt him. The next presidential debate should have Obama replaying all those 'facts' and promises and calling him out for the lies.
That is my hope.

Maybe I've read too many spy novels and seen too many movies that tend to mimic The Manchurian Candidate (!) but I have to ask "If a party's candidate for President (as well as V-P) is caught out in a lie or lies every single day, then what sort of truth can the American people expect from him (them) if elected? The fact that his advisors are so matter-of-fact about it truly scares me, and I'm sure most of the ROTW. A well-oiled weathervane, as one pundit put it. If it weren't so serious, and dangerous, we'd be laughing our fool heads off. After the Bush antics, President Obama earned the ROTW's respect. Now Romney is very likely, judging by his overseas visits and recent speeches, to put that respect into a fast reverse.
Brings to mind a couple of adages: "Be careful what you wish (or pray) for, you just might get it", and then Lincoln's famous saying "You can fool some of the people all of the time (gee, isn't that the truth?), you can fool all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time".
Sure hope the American public gets some smarts before Nov. 6 -- for all our sakes.
