Once I'm up, I'm up - will sleep later

Is Poppy really smart or what. Yesterday, I found her downstairs already in her nest when I went down for my shower. For the past few days, I've been shutting the front door so she can't slide open the screen and come back in. So finding her down there all ready to be tucked in told me she knew if she was outside when I got dressed she wouldn't be allowed back in.
Just now, she was in her old nest on the floor of our bedroom, saw me getting dressed and figured I might be going to work and would put her out. She hightailed it under the bed.
Clever kitty!!!

So I have just done something so unfashionable that it is practically outre.
I called my cell phone provider to downgrade from a smartphone to a simple flip phone with no Internet. I am so sick of having something that drops calls every time I press my ear to it, calls everybody and his brother while in my purse and basically says that apps are the answer to everything. Oh, and I dxropped it the other day so the screen has cracks. I miss the simpler ringtones, the simpler game and the cleanliness of having the screen protected!
Having said that, I am shopping for a tablet....I'm finally acknowledging my state of denial and realizing that I do need large print books and that Kindle might be a good solution. I can also get one that has web access.
I would rather carry two devices, each doing its thing well, than one printer/faxer/copier/scanner/car washer/valet/concierge/bookie/boyfriend/agent/front man/bouncer/doctor/dentist etc.... that promises a million things and does NOTHING very well.
Athena, the unfashionable. (I also don't like beer :-) )
-
Wherever did you find a plain old phone?? I have a Kindle Fire and love it.
Scoot,
Enjoying a hard cider -
I'm thinking the cheaper Kindle Touch....still not quite sure, though.
-
I'm still awake but not for long. I spoiled myself and went and bought a wireless computer for my bike so I can know how far I ride. Also fixed the seat since it was loose - that took a while. Quietly swearing at my DD for breaking it last year when she was here. I got a $250 gift card from our electricity company for buying the energy efficient pool pump, so I used that for the computer and new bike pants for both of us - still got heaps left on the card.
Athena - my phone doesn't even take pics but it does have a light

I'm stocked up on Lean Cuisine frozen dinners and chocolate for the week Steve's away and we have plenty of wine left.
-
Hi all. I'm heading up in a few minutes. Athena, I'm with you on the phone. I have a Razor Max, but I'm getting rid of it the minute i am no longer trying to run a law practice. I keep threatening to throw my husband's under the car.
-
Ha, ha! I hear you!
-
Often feel too dumb for my smartphone. This from a 30 year employee of Ma Bell.
-
Had a lovely nap - snuggled up under all of the blankets - it's really cold today. The south westerleys have started.
Poppy has been in her little nest all day - she seems to be really tuned in to the weather.
-
Just saw on the morning news there is a 17 year old girl who one a science contest. She has come up with an AP for the computer that can diagnose BC with 99.1 accuracy without needing a biopsy! How cool is that!
-
I can sleep 10 hours at night, given half a chance. Really don't relate to those who can't sleep on Aromasin. For me it's the opposite.
Sue, sweet dreams to you and Poppy!
Kira, when will we see that little genius's invention in action?! 99% is a lot higher than mammos!
-
Athena, I love my Kindle Fire! My only complaint is that I can't read when outside in sunlight. But since I don't do that very often, it's not really an issue. If I'm out hiking or camping, I take my regular Kindle so I can read, plus it has a longer battery life. I've been looking at tablets--the ASUS (the primere or some such, the expensive one) has my eye. Maybe a present for myself when I finish this Pilates training--if my body holds up!
Had a lovely dinner with my friend who was just diagnosed. She's doing better than I did the first time, 10 years ago. But we're different personalities. She brought me lots of Trader Joe's chocolate. What a great friend!!
-
Count me as one of those with a simple flip phone. I am technically challenged so having a smart phone would drive me nuts. I can't text on my phone because I don't have a keyboard thingamajiggy and I am too slow to run through the letters.
Besides I can't read a darn thing without glasses. I can't even see the menu on my phone in the sunlight.
I am worried that if I got a kindle to read books, etc. that the glare would hurt my eyes and I would get frustrated. Besides there is something about turning pages in a regular book that I like.
Been busy with the horse so haven't been around much. It is high time due to the show season and if I am not showing myself - I am there supporting my friends.
-
Kira - just read up on the app that could "one day" diagnose bc - it will rely on fine needle aspirate samples and then will diagnose from those - so yes, there will still be biopsies.

Lovey and I were stood up. The lady was a no-call, no-show.
Obviously, not the right person. So, the search goes on. -
Hi Friends,
I am so technologically challenged. I have a fliptop cell phone too. That's all I can manage. I can barely figure out how to retrieve messages on it. People who understand all those gadgets just love them ... I'm not one of them. I'm still trying to figure out our new camera!
Riley ... Sorry to hear the lady was a no-show ... she's obviously not right for Lovey.
Jancie ... My cell phone has large numbers on it, which is a good thing cause I can't read the small ones without my glasses. There is no way I would be able to see a keyboard on the phone!
Anne ... I'm glad your friend is doing well. She's lucky to have you.
Kira ... When is your Florida get together? I posted pics a few pages back of our small reunion in North Carolina last week. We all met on BCO, but only two of us still post here.
Hope everyone is having a great day,
hugs,
Bren

Yorkie - changing to Aromasin seems to have fixed the sleep problems I got from Arimidex. It was really cold last night - still is - went to bed around 10 and woke up at 5 as usual - added an extra blanket to replace Steve's warmth
I really hate being here alone.Riley - sorry about the lady not showing up. Don't worry you'll find her a good home.
I prefer real books!!!
-
I think the new kindles are supposed to be immune to glare....I'm trying not to spend too much money on this (I'm very stingly with technology), but I will look at the Kindle Fire, as Scoot and Ann have. Bren - you're not missing anything. Smartphones are neither especially good as phones nor as Internet browsers.
Can't wait for my new flip phone to come. I never knew what a dropped call even was until I got my smartphone - not so smart after all.
Riley, sorry that you and lovey got stood up. Shameless litty disrespectors!

Susie - I prefer real books too - believe me, this decision is NOT easy. It is partly due to my crappy sight. I need a device where I can make the text bigger!
-
Count me in on the flip-phone fanclub! I kept my old Nokia cell phone (not a flip, the old small brick kind!) forever until I couldn't get batteries. Then I moved to a Motorola flip phone with TracFone, because I don't want to be THAT much in touch. I want my phone to be able to make and receive phone calls, not sing, dance, do my taxes, grocery shop, park my car and perform air traffic control services. I can receive and send texts, but it doesn't have a QWERTY keyboard so sending takes a long time. I refused a Crackberry with work for a long time (had a nice flip phone there, too), but was forced to take one this year because they discontinued the contract with Verizon and made everyone move to Sprint with a Crackberry. I was the last one because they didn't tell me -- they just didn't pay the bill. Procurement got in trouble for that one! The Crackberry (which I call my Bzzzt-bzzzt because that's what it does) is OK but I am not sure I will know how to answer it if someone calls. It is like holding a deck of playing cards to my ear!
I have an iPad for mobile computing, but I only have it because I won it in a contest. I would never have bought one, although I can now see how I would want to have one. I have read one book on it -- it is OK, but I prefer a paper book. I do like having Facebook on it, though, for the newsfeed (since I am a news junkie).
Flip-phone users, rise up! Help our sisters throw off their smart phone chains!
L -
Libby, how do you get a book onto the iPad? I use an iPad, but have still not been able to load any reading material on it.
-
Will I go for an early morning ride or not?????? It's freezing - not by your standards but it must be 6 C or close to it.
-
Decided to wait until this afternoon when the sun's out and it's warmed up - will be colder down by the creek.
-
Momine, I downloaded the Kindle app from the App Store. I also downloaded the Nook App, but I haven't used that. I also downloaded the Overdrive Media console which allows me to get e-books from my library. That comes in E-Pub format. I also downloaded some other book apps from the App Store, like Google Books (which is called something else now) and Kobo and a couple others. There are books in the public domain that you can then download. I had to download some to my computer and then move them to my iTunes, but don't remember how. Also you can buy books through iTunes.
Does that help?
L -
Yes, sort of. I guess I have to figure out how iTunes works. Thanks!

Any of you horse folk out there: on a whim I was invited and then attended a presentation by a local breeder of straight Egyptian Arabian horses, mainly because I wanted to see pretty horses and foals. There were three foals, and lots of very pretty horses. I saw one yearling that was just gorgeous - very gentle. I just feel in love with her. Too bad I can't afford to buy her - but looking was free.
Sigh. The irony is that I tell my daughter not to go look at kittens unless she can afford to take care of another cat (since she's unemployed, we're paying for her cat's food and vet). So I go look at horses, which I can't possibly afford.
-
I have used Kindle on the iPhone and more often use iBooks. It's as easy as adding a new app. Just choose the book - I do it on the big computer, synch the iPhone and then it is ready to load in iBooks on the phone.
When I had a not smart phone (is it a stupid phone?!) texting was next to impossible. Now it is quite straightforward with the iPhone. My 97 year old father whose memory is fading can still work his iPhone (most of the time). They aren't difficult - just a different choice.
-
Today I bought an African Green Singing Finch. Sylvester! He looks and sounds like this. Willl take pics when I find some batteries.
-
Changed my mind again (women's perogative) and went for the ride waering a singlet and a long sleeve top. Good news is my seat did not move at all!!! I am a great handywoman. Computer worked fine - total distance 7.6km - that is depending on if I entered the wheel size correctly. Now I'm pooped (but warm) and can sit down and watch my current affair shows in peace - don't have to go for a ride again until Tuesday.
-
Blue - gorgeous bird!!!
