Thanks everyone for the advice on C25K - and Lisa, I really appreciate the advice on the incline, I hadn't heard that. I've had the incline at zero, so I might think about bumping that up in a couple of weeks. So my jogging at 4.0 seems really slow compared to you ladies, but then at this point I'm not going for speed, just endurance. It took me a while to get comfortable jogging on a treadmill, always felt like I was going to fly off the back. I really have to concentrate through the jogging sections so I stay in the middle of the treadmill. This is to try and get me prepared for obstacle run in September, so I don't walk the whole thing LOL.

Heidi Thanks a bunch!! I ended up swimming 2300 yds in my alloted 50 min swim yesterday. Back to walking for the next 3 days. Maybe a hike by Friday if I am feeling it. Not many SE's showing yet from treatment yesterday...low grade headache and some fatigue. I can definately deal with those for now. Hydration at 2pm, which is great I just despise going in to that place anymore. The thought of it and pulling in to the parking lot give me more SE's that the darn treatment! Enought complaining from me.

Thanks all for the encouragement. I was happy to see that I have been already doing a lot of what u recommended. I think what struck me the most was what pat01 said. My mantra should be "endurance, not time". Thanks!
Hang in there trichick, you're in the home stretch. I exercised thru chemo and it helped just doing "normal people" stuff
I will slowly, without self judgement, jog today with u sistahs on my mind.
BTW does anyone use the MapMyRun iPhone app? There is a way to hook up with friends and share workouts. Anyone game? -
TriChick - I know what you mean about hating the infusion center. I never had any nausea during chemo as emend worked for me. However, my MO's scale is in the infusion room. I never even had chemo in that room as I had a different onc during active treatment. But every check up when I have to go in that room to get weighed, I get violently nauseated for just a few moments. Then a few months ago on TV I saw a video of someone getting chemo, and I got incredibly nauseated and had to look away till that scene was over. Weird.
Took a 2 mile run this morning - at an astounding pace (for me) of 10:15 minute miles. I'm usually a solid 12 or 12:30 minute per mile runner, so I don't know what got into me this morning, but it felt great. I think it was having music - my headphones broke during the 10K I did in April. I hadn't gotten around to replacing them till this week, so this was my first run with music in a long time.

xpectmiracles, I post on DailyMile and there's a couple runners' groups on FB that I participate in (anyone, PM me if you want to join in), but no, I've never done the MapMyRun thing. DM is actually very good, though I'm not as vocal on it as others are. What's nice is that I've actually met people in person in my area and run with them from there, because you can connect via the races you've signed up for.
Can I boast a little? I finally PR'd in my 5k this past Sunday! Broke through that pesky 26-minute mark with a time of 25:38. Splits were 7:49, 8:21, 8:21 and 7:19 for the remaining .15 mile (didn't run the tangents too well, oops). And first time with a sub-8 minute mile, woohoo! I never believed I could ever get to be so fast, and now I realize that's what's been holding me back, that disbelief. So now I can honestly say that after these past three months of working with a coach one-on-one, I'm seeing results. I started with the coach just about 4 weeks after my last surgery in March. Slow and steady, but it has paid off, and I'm now faster than I ever was even before BC.

I did 6 miles this morning and included 6 x 2 min intervals with 1 min easy jog in between. My first intensity since Boston and it didn't feel too bad. I even through some strides in at the end......of course I needed a nap about 10am.

I would like to join this thread. I am running the Chicago Marathon in Oct, and do at least 1 5K a month. I started in Oct 2011, and love it. I run 3x during the week, with a long run on Saturdays.
I "know" some of you from other boards, and glad to be here.

I decided to change my avatar...this is me coming into the finish on my first (and, as of yet, only) race. As you can see, I made the mistake of wearing a sweatshirt...it was around my waist for the entire race... Oh well...live and learn...
I had another great run in Cape Cod before we left. What a blast! Home now, facing the hills once again...

Back to running again.... I slowed down a bit, and it is making a difference, I can run a mile now, without stopping. Hoping to get to two miles by the end of July, at this pace. Once I can do three miles, I'll focus on increasing the speed a bit.
Tomorrow I will walk instead of run...... early in the morning as we are absolutely baking here in Chicago.

Hi Lisa, Adey,Corrine...I just ran the Chicago Women's 5K last week and completed it in 37 min. I was impressed with myself as I have never ran a 5K before and I had nothing to compare it too. I am looking at doing another 5K in July sometime. Do you want to join me? Let me know.
Question for the runners...do any of you wear a chest compression bra or vest when you run. I did develop some swelling in my chest from the humidity and was told to wear a compression shirt / bra /vest. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

I am carrying around a prescription for a compression vest too. I am curious if anyone has anything to say there.
I currently wear a Shock Absorber bra and it seems to be better than my previous very satisfactory Lululemon Bust Stops Here bra. The Lulu was very bounceproof, so I really liked it, but after I had the DIEP, I was having swelling on the delayed flap where the nodes were messed with. Using the Shock Absorber (the superduper extreme model with the buckle between the straps as well as on the band) I have seemed to not have the swelling. I do want the vest for knocking the swelling back when I do get it though, and I am open to giving it a try when I run.
Good work on the 37 minutes. My first 5K was 39. My PB is still only 29. There's lots of faster folks here but I'm not going to let the envy get the better of me :-)

Wanted to check in and say hello! Lots of good stuff, as usual, going on here! Great job Orangemat, Esther, Lisa, Blackjack....everyone really! And Gail, kicking up the intensity! That is what I miss the most!! That and racing! I am hoping for my first 5k back in action to be Sept 23 - - we have to see how recovery from surgery goes. If things go as planned with no glitches I should have a solid 4 weeks to train prior to Sept 23!
No running for me since treatment #7/8 Tuesday. I actually feel like I could run but I am going to stick to my "program" of no running for ~1 week post treatment. Plus, I have been invited to mountain bike today!!!
For me, mountain biking will (almost always) trump running (until I hit training mode for Goofy Challenge I suppose)!
I am planning to get a run in on Wednesday AM, until then run safe, and stay cool!

When you're dealing with swelling, dont forget the value of swimming. It provides compression and exercise. I've added swimming 4 times a week to my routine, which I did mostly because of edema of my right arm and chest wall. It has helped a lot. I've also been using compression garments, but now I don't need the compression garments. I still wear them for long runs and for air travel. But the swimming has been helpful.

Hi Firstcall....what type or brand of compression garment do you wear? I have a left arm sleeve that I wear sometimes, but I have more chest swelling. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Everyone -- Blackjack... definitely up for a 5k this summer, I would love to do a July one, but I will have to do it as a walker, I think August is more realistic as a runner. Can you believe how long I have been working on this? I am not going to give up, even if it seems like it is taking me FOREVER to get to the point of being able to run a 5k.
I did manage to go running once while I was on vacation in Boston.... brought my daughter with me. Teenagers exercising before 10am.... hah! She may have burned more calories by rolling over in bed. Every time I increased the speed on the treadmill, she lowered it..... until finally she was walking on the treadmill at 1 mile per hour! I had to laugh. She is an athlete, a high school cheerleader, and swims and jogs a few times a week, but just not a morning person, for sure.....
I start my new job tomorrow! This will be the real challenge... how will I fit exercise in when I am holding down a full time job, and four very busy kids, none with drivers license? I need to figure out how to get exercise while driving....... maybe those foot-powered cars they have in the old Flinstone cartoons?

BJ - I use the compression garments by UnderArmour. They also make a shooters sleeve, which I have a couple of, and it is basically a compression sleeve. Its not medical/prescription grade, but it seems to work for me. They have a summer garment and a winter garment. The winter one is a little heavier, and has a higher neck (which I don't need). I mostly use the summer one. Its a little less expensive too.

Hey everyone! Looks like we're getting more runners here, so glad to share the gift!
Firstcall, thanks again for maintaining the calendar. I have a couple more local races to add. This coming Wednesday, July 4th, I'm doing the 9-11 Tribute Run 5k in Glen Rock, NJ. Then on July 21, I'm doing the Teterboro Airport 5k in Teterboro, NJ. These two races are important to me because I wasn't able to run in them last year due to my surgeries. My husband ran them and I was there spectating. So I feel good to get by that feeling of having been "left out" from these local events. Onward and upward, indeed!
Now I have a question for anyone who has silicone implants and running long in the heat. Today on my long run I felt the substance of my implant get kind of sloshy while I was running. Like congealed feeling, almost. Now I'm wearing all new and very supportive sports bras (Moving Comfort Vero) so it can't be from excess movement. I'm just concerned that the high temps we've been having, along with my elevated body temperature and extended time running (was just past the hour mark) that the material of the implant is somehow getting damaged. Does silicone change its chemistry with too much heat?? The texture of the implant feels fine now that I'm home, showered and cooled off. But it definitely felt off and weird earlier. Anyone else experience this??

Just a short note to say I'm back! After pretty mcuh two weeks of 70-80 hour weeks, our audit over and I took myself out for a run in the sunshine yesterday. Had to cut it short as I'm quite fair-skinned (indeed, got some color on my shoulders, any more would have been painful); went for a total of 4.6 mi. Then today, I decided I would make up the difference to get to 10 by running 5.4 miles... see what I did there? Math error! I forgot to carry the one and ended up with 11 miles in two days. Feels great to be back in it. Will need to plan out my July calendar so I can find some kind of routine again...

Nothing like fresh shoes for a long run! Up and out early (like 4:45AM) in a feeble attempt to beat the desert heat. Got about 11-1/2 miles of hills and breakfast in before 7 o'clock.
I am trying to wean myself off of Celexa and feeling a bit wonky, so have spent the rest of the day lounging and watching TdF and Olympic trials. Could be worse!

Hmmm the swimming sounds interesting for LE. I used to do 30 minutes a few times a week but then asthma started to bother me. Maybe they changed the chlorination routine at the Y. I did nothing for a while then started with the running. The asthma has really improved massively with running so the pool may be worth another shot. In my 5-day, 4-city, 10,000km flight-a-palooza a few weeks ago, my legs and feet just swelled very unattractively. I can't blame that on the mastectomy (maybe the caesarian? or the DIEP?) and I've used the surgical antiembolism stockings on some flights but forgot on that trip and paid for it. I had to sleep in those stockings for three days to get them down. I don't have a rx for leggings or sleeves but I do for the vest. The first LE therapist said wear compression while exercising. I use CW-x 3/4 tights but I can't see putting compression stockings underneath, especially in the heat. That would seem to be counterproductive.
On Twitter, @runDisney was announcing a Jeff Galloway training app for phones. I can't see any apps on the link, but there are training calendars (pdf) with tips and a link to his own site that has links to the app store, so with some work, there are apps. They're all talk-in-you-ear apps that aren't helpful to a deaf person, but the calendars might keep me honest. The 18 week window for the Wine and Dine Half starts soon!

I have both those styles of the Feetures, including the left-right specific Elites. Depending on the shoes, the weather and my mood, I wear all of them. Inexpensive, no blisters and they last. Can't ask for more than that!

kayb on the sock poll, I like Lululemon (of course I do. It's important that they're pretty! Although lately, no good colours. Pick it up, Lulu designers!) Before those, I used to use the Nike left-right specific ones.
I like the left-right specific because it amuses me to look at my feet and see the L and the R.
:-) Not sure it does anything special footwise.
I have long feet but narrow so I like having snug arches in the socks to resist bunching, and the Nike+ were good for that, but the Lulu are a little thinner/lighter. I have not had blister issues in either.

kayb, you realize that's almost the tactic I use with running shoes, right?
Went to the running store today to donate 5 of the 6 pairs that I don't use anymore. That left three pairs in my current rotation. A package arrived today with pair number 4. Yeah, I like my running shoes, I know.
