MMTOMH ... Melissa, that's okay, slow is good ... I hope you are able to do it. Thank you for the advise on the Radiagel ... Dr didn't mention that to me at all so I will be sure to bring it up on Thursday and have him prescribe it to me.
Goldlining ... I will look into it for next year, when does the registration usually start? I'm glad the heat wasn't to bad for you and you got to enjoy the warmth. I try to avoid the heat on my runs because my breathing gets so heavy and the sweat pours off of me ... I was stressed yesterday with my appointment and haven't been sleeping very well the last few nights. Decided to run at 7pm last night to get tired out, it was pitch black and still 72 degrees out, I got drenched just running 4 miles. Unfortunately, the run didn't help my insomnia either, was back awake this morning at 3am and couldn't fall back to sleep.
Groovygirls ... Now that's perserverance ... way to go, the heat really does drain your energy and slows your pace down as well!! I'm sorry for the recent loss of your father ... it's wonderful that you run for him!
My mother permanently lost her mobility Nov 2011. Even though she lives only a half mile from my house, she needed 24/7 care in the beginning before her back surgery so I lived with her for a month before surgery and then afterwards was a very busy caregiver ... was happy to be able to be there for her. By April she was back to being as independent as she could be after her house and all got revamped to suit her needs. My caregiver roll went to only having to help her with showers, shopping and an occasional trip out to get her out of the house. Her mobility loss was life changing for both of us ... it made me want to get back in shape, so that's why I started running/dieting. I had a "girlfriend" trip planned out before any of this happened to NYC in April ... we walked over 5 miles each day and it felt wonderful ... one of my friends (now my one day a week running partner) told me about the C25K program to get started running and everything fell into place after that. My mom has been my biggest motivator and supporter, she's thrilled that I got back in shape. My BC diagnosis this past Nov made her so upset, she loss her mother to it. I was adopted so it wasn't on our radar as a high likelihood, especially at 45. I felt like it might cause her to give up hope and loose her strength that she has to have to go on. Being able to still run and do a HM race (and planning on others, too) has brought comfort to her (and me) knowing that I am well enough to still be able to do it because I know a lot of sisters can't ... that's why I was so excited to find this thread and you all ... just to hear that it was still a possibility and you all are still running gave me such a peace and hope. She's the reason I am running, you all are the encouragement to still run!!

The runDisney site has a link to sign up for email reminders for when registrations open, but I don't trust that and I follow @rundisney on twitter to make sure I know when it opens. I understand the DLHM is now open to Disney Rewards card members so it should open to others soon. That's Labour Day weekend. The TinkerBell Half (this coming weekend) at Disneyland was sold out within about a week (15,000 places) about six months ahead of the event. I registered for the mid-November Wine and Dine Half in mid-April. (That is a great run - it's night time so not as hot for you, and they provide a changing tent to get out of the sweaty clothing and you can stay for the food and wine festival until 4am!)

I had 28 radiation treatments last April and May with tissue expanders in. I had a little skin redness and minimal peeling during the last few weeks in my underarm area, but no real fatigue. I was doing trail running at the time and was able to continue running throughout my treatments. I hope you will able to do the same. Good luck

I did it! I ran the whole 20 minutes today! Woohoo!

MMTOMH! NICE GOING! Great day, great day . . .
-
lovedogs ... thank you!
MMTOMH ... Yeah! I'm so glad you were able to do it! Keep going!!
goldlining ... thank you for the info about the Disney runs. I checked out the website already, looks like it's a fun filled weekend with races for the whole family.
Ran 5 miles yesterday morning at a faster pace than usual to stay in front of a stinky Waste Management truck ... it was a race worth winning
I'm going to run a 5K race this Saturday and my 11 yo daughter is running the 1 mile fun run, too. She ran a 7:16 mile in PE this week for the Presidential Fitness award and and was the fastest girl in her class so I am curious to see how she places in her age group at this race. I'm proud that she did her best to win and that she's showing interest in road races, too.

Thanks ladies! On to W6D1!

I don't remember who posted it a while back, but someone reported on the merits of lighter shoes. I have had "lighter shoes" on my list since then, and finally on my trip to Orlando I picked up a pair of Adidas Bostons at the factory store. Given the price, it seemed like a reasonable gamble. (I wanted Tempo, but they did not have my size.) These are 20% lighter than the shoes I had. I tried them on the treadmill today. I increased the belt speed and it was quite a lot easier to run that pace than with the old shoes. I am probably not going to use them outdoors in the bitter cold we're in, but will be travelling south in a few weeks and will look forward to seeing how they feel on the pavement. Never would have thought of it if I hadn't read it here! Thanks!

I finished the Disney World Marathon! My time was super, super slow--5 hours, 54 minutes, but I did it! First marathon after BC! Part of the reason I was so slow is that we stopped multiple times to take pictures. The other reason is that my IT band began killing me around mile 22.5, and I had to basically walk the rest of the race. I was crying and crying. I was so disappointed! I was mad that BC had interfered with my training and the surgeries (BMX and exchange) had sapped my strength. But then my best friend and my husband who were both running with me reminded me to remember how far I had come and how much I had accomplished! I was so proud and happy to finish that marathon (my 3rd). Now I begin retraining tomorrow for Boston. I hope to take at least an hour off of my finish time. My goal (although maybe unrealistic) is 4:29. If I can get this IT band to calm down, I think I can pick up my pace.
Goldlining: I tried the lighter shoes, and I loved them....but I also developed IT band issues after running in them for about 90 miles. I also increased my mileage very fast after my exchange surgery, so I don't know if it was the shoes or the increase in mileage that caused my IT band to hurt so bad.
-
Hey, good to know. I will watch it. I did feel my right knee a bit to start out, and I have had IT band issues in the past so I will definitely recognize the early signs. I have the foam roller and will not hesitate to get the physio involved if anything crops up. I was also worrying about stress fractures, now that I know what that is like. But they are not ultraminimal shoes, and I thought it was worth giving it a shot. The shoes I had just land -- thud-- and reverberate as they become one with the earth, until I pry them off for the next step.
Roan, your injured marathon time would be AOK for me and your target time beyond my every hope! (I can only dream of a 2:30 half.) I was at Disney's Hollywood Studios about the time you passed through, and I can attest it was hot so there is definitely a good reason for not pushing it if there is inflammation going on. You have a beautiful special commemorative design medal from the big 20th Marathon event to remind you of surviving and prevailing over not just the BC and surgeries but also the training challenges and the IT band acting up.
For the calendar: I signed up for the Disneyland Half Marathon, Sept 1, 2013. I have an annual pass and we get a 1 week head start - but registration opens noon EST tomorrow (Tuesday). (For any Disney runners who want to get that Coast to Coast medal for 2013....) There are only two events at DL, so anyone that wants the Coast to Coast has to do either DLHM or TinkHalf, and if I recall correctly, the TinkHalf sold out in under 2 weeks (14,000 places) so I was not taking any chances. I can choose at the last minute not to book a flight or hotel, but I can't get a registration once they're gone. And face it, I want to go :-)
-
Roan - I think thats a very good time, coming back after treatment. And I bet you can do the 4:29 at Boston. I doubt I'll be able to come in under 430 this time. I was thinking I would but I am nursing a stress fracture in my right foot. I havent run in almost a month now, but I've been doing the bike, and a lot of time in the pool, to keep my cardio up. It is healing, I can see healing on my films, so I'll start the elliptical again this week, but I'm now behind on my schedule to train for Boston. Oh well....at this point it will be a hope to finish it kind of run.
Hopefully everyone is running well, I am grateful for the new year, and the chance to run again.
-
Roan, You did great! I'll be praying for you to do achieve your goal at Boston ... I hope your injury gets better quickly, too! I heard the foam rollers work good for IT/Hamstring injuries, my running partner struggles with that and she is looking into buying one, too.
If anyone is looking for a good control/support lightweight shoe ... I highly recommend looking into Mizunos. I have had knee issues in the past and have not had any problems running while wearing them ... I over pronate and these have worked out really well.
Ran 11.5 miles this morning ... beautiful day with lows in the 40's and high around 70 ... we had an "experienced" runner run with us today and she pushed us harder than usual ... we kept a 10:15 pace on a 3/1 run/walk. One more long run to go before the HM. I start rads on Wed ... trying hard to keep positive that's it won't affect my endurance/time, will find out real soon how it will affect me. Also, had fun at the 5K and 1 mile run on Sat... my husband and two daughters all ran. I ran the 1 mile with my youngest (7 yo) after the 5K (26:32 time .. personal best/6th in age group) ... both of them finished in the top 8 in their age groups ... dad did well, too ... proud of them for running their best ... they were motivated because it was a fundraiser for American Cancer Society relay for life ... got cute shirts with BC logo and "leaving cancer in the dust" on them ... we all loved the shirts and of course had to take a family picture in them!

Trying to gat back in the groove....... C25K week 1, workout 1, 2, & 3! (60 min-3.68 miles) Slow but I did it. Ran 60 secs at 5 and then walked 90 secs at 3 for 60 min.
-
Adey, missed seeing you here. I also need to get back at it, instead of doing C25K at the gym I've been doing spinning. But I want to do a couple of adventure races this year, so need to ramp up the running again.
-
Hey Adey and Pat01 come on over to the 2013 thread. See firstcall's post just above yours for the link to it. See you there!
-
Comin' over! Hi Pat01!
-
I'm coming over too!

Back from vacation in sunny California where the running was amazing! Had a fun encounter with a runner on Saturday - the place I was planning to run was closed for a Marine Corps race. They let me through because I was early. When I passed one of the runners - in tights and long-sleeves - he looked at me in my shorts and t-shirt and said, 'Just looking at you makes me cold!' I love being a New Englander! That said, today's run took place on the treadmill since it was -9 outside!

Hey 301724 - see you over at the 2013 thread. See post just up a few, from firstcall.
